Society learns about Barton school history Crowd of about 50 includes former students By LINDA MCALPINE Daily News The halls of Barton Elementary School came alive with history Tuesday night. The Barton Historical Society hosted its monthly meeting at the school, and members many of whom were once its students learned about its history. The school, which opened at its current site in 1925, will close for good in June. The school at 614 School Place is the second Barton Elementary School, according to Barton Historical Society member Eileen Eckert, who made the presentation. There was a Barton Public School that dated back to A red brick school was built in 1869 at a cost of $4,000. It had no amenities like indoor plumbing, and heat was supplied by a wood stove. That building remained in use until the School Board decided to build a new school in May 1924, Eckert said. A special meeting was held and a referendum set to borrow $22,000 for the new building, she told the audience of more than 50 people in the gym of Barton Elementary School. The current school opened in Only two classrooms were used until the mid-1930s. In 1936, Miss Ruth O Meara came to teach. There were 75 students that year, Eckert said. At the annual meeting of 1936, there was discussion of having a telephone installed at the school but it didn t come to fruition until the 1950s, Eckert said. In 1937, a radio was purchased from the Gamble store in West Bend and years later, students listened to radio programs, she said. Eckert said that in 1939, a mortgage burning party was held at the school as the last payment on the borrowed $22,000 was made. In the 50s, the school year started after Labor Day. Students had an hour for lunch and so many walked home. Those who brought their lunches, usually did so in lunchboxes with the heroes of the day on them, such as Roy Rogers. During the winters, the older students would go sledding on the hill at the school, using washing machine covers from Barton Washer as sleds, Eckert said. One event during that era must have raised a memory with the audience because there was laughter when Eckert told a story about a snowball fight that got out of hand. One of the younger students got hit and told Mr. Riley and the punishment was to write 1,000 times I must not throw snowballs on the school grounds, she said. Barton held grades kindergarten through eight until Silverbrook Middle School opened in the mid-1960s. Delores Kilby of West Bend, who was Delores Mayer when she attended Barton from kindergarten through eighth grade, smiled as she looked over a table that held a collection of photos and other memorabilia from the school. There s my name, she said with a surprised laugh as she read a program for the class of 1948 commencement exercise, which listed four graduates. I was in seventh grade that year and I played the accordion as entertainment for the program, she said, pointing to her name on the program. Kilby brought along an envelope that contained several of her report cards from her years at Barton. Kilby said she enjoyed having the chance to visit Barton. It s sad that it s closing, but I guess nothing lasts forever but good memories, she said. Barton Elementary School Principal Jeanne-marie Ciriacks said if anyone has class photographs or other items related to Barton Elementary School, they can call the school at to arrange to have the material copied.

GIRLS SOCCER East makes a mark in WLT picture Suns dominate conference contender By NICHOLAS DETTMANN Daily News In convincing fashion, West Bend East s girls soccer team defeated Slinger, 4-1, on a chilly Tuesday evening. It was just the way East (7-2, 1-0) wanted to start the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference season. Slinger coach Jim Rasmussen didn t hide the importance of the game in terms of the conference championship race. I think this game was for first place, whether it was the first game of the year or the last game of the year, he said. It s early, but he may be right. Going into the season, the Suns were considered the favorite to win conference. The Suns proved it was ready for the preseason hype and accolade after beating the Owls (3-1, 0-1). Step one was to win our home opener, our conference opener against a good conference team, East coach Brian Vetter said. The girls also wanted to make a statement to show and prove they can play and they re ready to be at the top of the conference. That s what they proved tonight. In the preseason, Vetter was excited about the talent and experience his team possessed. Rasmussen said this year s East team may be the best the program has had in at least four or five years. I think they re that good, Rasmussen said. Unfortunately for us, we didn t play our best game. This was a good opportunity for East to take a stronghold of the conference. The conference s top teams from the last few seasons Slinger, Oconomowoc and Hartford Union are all going to play in West Bend this season, instead of the Suns going on the road for any of those matchups. Defending the home field was important. They knew how big this game was, Vetter said. It s a huge momentum builder. In past years, we ve always been on the short end of the stick. We re always looking up, so it s nice to be at the top. Oconomowoc, Slinger and Hartford have been the teams to beat in the WLT since The conference champion has been one of those three schools in that span, whereas East has only
one season with a winning conference record (2007). Watertown won conference in This is a game that we knew we had to win, Vetter said. Rasmussen echoed the same sentiment. East got two goals and an assist from Elisabeth Held. Gabriella Bland had a goal and an assist. Kayla Furlano also scored a goal for East. We played great as a team, Held said. It s huge, she added about beating Slinger. Slinger s a very good team. We re very excited to perform well. Slinger s lone goal was by Anna Strong in the 70th minute. We played our worst first half that we have all year, Rasmussen said. East controlled the game almost from wire-to-wire. At one point in the first, the Owls couldn t get the ball into their offensive half of the field. I thought East played very well, Rasmussen said. As of right now, the conference is in East s control, which is a good feeling for the Suns. I love the way our girls are taking of ownership of the way they play and expect to play at a high level. Our main goal is a conference championship. That s what we re hungry for and this is step one. EAST 4, SLINGER 1 Slinger East First half 1. WBE, Elisabeth Held (Rachael Stapelfeldt) 10th minute; 2. WBE, Gabriella Bland (Held), 33rd minute. Second half 3. WBE, Held (Lexi Keberle) 42nd minute; 4. WBE, Kayla Furlano (Bland), 66th minute; 5. SLI, Anna Strong, 70th minute. Shots SLI 6, WBE 17. Saves SLI 4 (Ashley O Rourke 4); WBE 2 (Hailey Krewald 2). Corner kicks SLI 2, WBE 4. TRACK AND FIELD: SLINGER QUADRANGULAR Up against the wind Runners challenged by breezy conditions Daily News by ADAM LINDEMER SLINGER West Bend West and Slinger runners faced a challenge Tuesday during the Slinger quadrangular. They had to run into the wind on the home stretch to the finish line. It s not good, Slinger girls coach Russ Hermann said. It affects the timing. Some runners had a tougher time than others in those conditions. (The wind) is difficult for all runners, but especially the hurdlers, West boys coach Mike Vorpahl said. Their steps are everything and the wind was in their face, blowing them backward. The Slinger girls went on and took first place with 111 points, while the Slinger boys were second with 73 points, edging West (72). Grafton won the boys event (96), while the West girls were third (39 points). One person the wind didn t seem to affect was Slinger high jumper Thomas Lofy, who won the boys event with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches. He missed his three attempts at 6 feet. We took it easy on him today, with just the high jump, Slinger boys coach Steve Bokath said. It s a work in progress, but he definitely has the potential to jump 6 feet or higher. The senior is in his first season on the track team, but competed in middle school, mainly as a sprinter.
I did track in middle school, so I had the basics, Lofy said. If I had done track all four years (in high school), things would be a lot easier. In his first indoor meet, Lofy pulled a hamstring during his first jump and is slowly easing back into the lineup. For three years, Lofy did not compete in a spring sport, mainly because he wanted some rest after the football and basketball seasons. I always tell myself that I need a break in between sports, Lofy said. But this was my senior year and I thought I might as well do it (come out for track). The natural athleticism that Lofy has as a multi-sport athlete makes up for being three years removed from track. I had to get in the swing of things early and get my steps right, Lofy said. Early on, there was a lot to learn, but I think things are falling into place. I m still working and still learning though. It s a process. Another first timer for the Owls who came away victorious was Sam Osterberg in the 300-meter hurdles. Sam s time is right around where I thought it would be, Bokath said. With Tuesday being his first outdoor track meet, he had a mix-up during the 100 hurdles and did not report his name for the race. There was that inexperience in the 100 hurdles, but he won the 300 hurdles, Bokath said. This was his very first varsity meet and the talent is definitely there. Kiley Sabin won both the shot put ( ) and discus (134-6). She won the discus by more than 50 feet and the shot put by more than 10 feet. Mary DeWalt won the 100 dash (12.9), while the Owls won the 3,200 relay (11:00.17) and the 400 relay (Schwartz, Kelly, Haugen, DeWalt). Julia Haugen won the 110 hurdles (17.1), while Jordyn Schwartz won the pole vault (9-6). We just wanted to get our first outdoor meet out of the way, Hermann said. Our spring break came at the perfect time. After the indoor conference meet, we had one day of school, then the break. We had a lot of girls out of town last week, it wasn t a full week, but we were ready for the first outdoor meet. West Bend s teams were using this meet to help them gear up for a meet it is hosting Friday. We just wanted to tune things up for our invitational on Friday, Vorpahl said. It s a chance for us to solidify a few places. West assistant coach Mark Rasmussen added, This is an opportunity to give some guys a chance to compete and try to get in shape. John Delgado won the boys shot put (44-0.5) for the Spartans, Collin Murray won the 800 run (2:07.9) and Kenny Holbrook won the 3,200 run (10:41.5). West s Shelly Zancanaro won the girls high jump (4-8), Sydney Faehling won the long jump (14-7.5) and Hannah Schmidt took first in the 400 dash (1:06.2). GIRLS Team Scores 1. Slinger 111; 2. BOYS TENNIS Suns sweeps Owls East exceeds Slinger s expectations By JASON CLARY Daily News In a conference match Tuesday, West Bend East outlasted Slinger, 7-0. I was hoping for that to happen, East coach Al Carrier said. We ve been struggling in a few spots, so today we got a chance to play and get at it again. At No. 1 singles, East senior Matt Zurowski cruised against sophomore J.P. McGuire, 6-0, 6-2. J.P. is a young hitter and has a lot of nice strokes, but Matt has more experience and firepower than he does right now, Carrier said. McGuire is someone that s still working on improving his game, but when he s an upperclassm an, Slinger coach Steve Anderson will be looking at him to win matches against other teams best players. I knew East was good, Anderson said. I knew they returned a lot of people, but I didn t know they were this good and I didn t expect it to be that one-sided. In the No. 3 singles match, Owls Thomas Melius went up against Suns senior Ben Vande Zande. Melius was suffering from flu-like symptoms all day and almost didn t make the match. Unfortunately, he didn t have a Michael Jordan-like performance with the flu, losing 6-3, and 6-0. Anderson said he was incredibly proud of how Melius put the team first and showed up for its first conference match. Melius said he felt awful all day, and playing the match didn t help.
Coming into the match, Slinger knew East was one of the top teams in the conference. Anderson didn t tell the team how good East was, just that it would be a tough conference match. We didn t try to build East up, Anderson said. We told them points are important and emphasized more that it s (a conference match). They have a lot of experience. One advantage to having young players is getting crucial experience against a team like the East, which has a steady lineup of veterans. One day, Slinger hopes it s on the other side, with the other team noting the experience it has in the lineup. Along with East s skill and experience, Slinger was on spring break last week, meaning the last tennis action it saw came more than a week ago. The Owls got a chance to practice a few times over the break, but Anderson and his team is ready to get back in the swing of things. It s almost a little too long. We re looking forward to getting a good mix of matches and practice. We ll get a steady diet of matches and practice, Anderson said.
