1 GIRLS SOCCER East, West split with Green Bay schools Spartans struggle with depth By JASON CLARY Daily News A short bench and fatigue got the best of West Bend West s girls soccer team Saturday. The Spartans cruised past Green Bay West, 8-1, but followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Green Bay Southwest. West Bend East also went 1-1 against the pair of Green Bay schools, beating Green Bay West, 10-0, and losing to Southwest, 1-0. We had no subs, West Bend West coach Kyle Cruse said. (Kristina) Krier went down (the game before), which left us with one less sub. (Cajsa) Lundstrom went down in that game as well. We gritted it out but didn t have the players or bodies to compete for the whole 80 minutes. They got a soft goal, but we were competitive throughout. West wasn t used to playing two games in a day, especially barely an hour after its previous game. With injury problems and a small roster, the Spartans were fatigued. Several players played the full 80 minutes in both games and, by the end of the second game, there wasn t any gas left in the tank. Cruse said his team was still happy with the results and he was proud of them for fighting hard and leaving it all out on the field. However, if West had the option, it would have been subbing players in and out, especially in the second game, in order to keep players fresh and get them more game experience. It wasn t an option, Cruse said. We played both games with 11 girls. Numbers-wise in the program, we re hurting. We re pretty beat up right now. All we can do is fight hard and play hard, and one of these days, we ll all come together. We hope it s sooner than later. Right now, West hopes to get one player back today against Cedarburg. While Krier s status is unknown, Cruse is optimistic he ll have her again at some point this year. Alex Saythany- Sengmanivong appears to be out for most of the season. Several other players are out with minor injuries. Right now, all the Spartans can do is try to stay healthy, and do all in its power to be competitive considering the circumstances. Not once, however, did Cruse complain about the injuries or the situation his team is in right now. He s focused on the big picture, and to him, this team can go places. (We ll) eventually get healthy, he said. It s going to be that much better when I do get my team at full strength with quality subs to come in. We re going to have that underdog mentality since we re so injured and young. Our record won t show the talent we have, and once we get to full strength, we should be a dangerous team. Brianna Greefkes scored four goals for the Spartans in the first game and seemed to always be in the right place at the right time. We were working together, Greefkes said. We were talking. We haven t been communicating very well, so this game we did a lot of communicating. Along with Greefkes four goals, Lundstrom, Amber Hagenstein, Kelsey Oliver and Melissa Rinn scored. West went into the two games with the Green Bay schools not knowing much about its opponents. While they did study tape of themselves, the Spartans had no idea what to expect and what was going to happen on the field. When the play got a bit rough in the games, Lundstrom answered the bell. Cruse said it has taken her some time to get adjusted to the less-aggressive style of play in the United States, but when games do get a little rough, she s the first to step up giving her team
2 a much-needed boost. The girls feed off it, Cruse said. They see how hard she s playing and the physicality she s playing with. The younger girls are sponges watching the upperclassmen play. We ve learned a lot (from her), Greefkes said. She s very aggressive and confident, isn t afraid to go for the ball. She isn t afraid to make mistakes. John Ehlke/Daily News West Bend East s Kayla Furlano passes against Green Bay West on Saturday in West Bend. BOYS GOLF Good to be first East wins 1st home meet in more than 20 years By NICHOLAS DETTMANN Daily News TOWN OF WEST BEND West Bend East boys golf coach Jay Krueger couldn t believe it took 21 years to walk away from the West Bend Country Club with a smile. But it did. For the first time in Krueger s 21 years as East s coach, the Suns won a conference meet on its home course, and did so by one stroke over their rival. East took first place in Monday s Wisconsin Little Ten Conference mini-meet. The Suns shot a 160, edging West Bend West (161), Beaver Dam (163) and Slinger (165). Watertown was fifth with a 179, followed by a tie between Hartford Union and Oconomowoc (189) and Wisconsin Lutheran. The Vikings had just three golfers, resulting in an incomplete score. This course and Old Hickory (in Beaver Dam) are probably the two hardest courses kids have difficulty with scoring-wise, Krueger said. To do this and to have one of the newcomers so to speak, Andrew Mecus, shooting 39 was just huge today.... It was phenomenal. East s scores were good, led by Mecus 39. He played in the No. 4 spot in the lineup. Kyle Rebholz and Mitch Saari each shot a 40, and Devon Hanson shot a 41. Owen Gluck shot a personal-best 43, which was the throw-out score. They were great scores, Krueger said. That s kind of the magic number. That s what I ve been talking about for literally 21 years that I ve been coaching. If you can shoot a 160 as a team, you re always going to have a chance to win a match. While West came up just short of taking first place, the Spartans still had a reason to smile. Daniel Schwalen finished tied for the low medalist score with Watertown s Eric Jahnke. They each shot a 1-over-par 37. I felt it went pretty well, Schwalen said of his round. John Nannetti had the second-lowest score for the Spartans with a 42. Schwalen has been down of late. Just days ago, he broke his driver. Then through the first three
3 holes of Monday s meet, he was 3 over, with a bogey, par and double bogey. It turned around for him in a hurry on the par-5 No. 11. After landing his tee shot at about 195 yards from the pin, Schwalen hit a 4 iron past the green. However, Schwalen said it was a good lie. Schwalen gently chipped at the shot and the ball slowly rolled down the green and into the cup for an eagle. I was a little bit surprised; I ve never got an eagle before, Schwalen said. I was just trying to put it close to the hole and let it run down the hill a little bit, he added. Monday s meet was similar to last week s WLT mini-meet opener. The top-four teams were separated by less than five strokes at that meet, won by Slinger. While it s early, having two closely contested conference matches will put pressure on the golfers to concentrate and think through each shot as one or two throw-away shots can spell the difference between first and maybe fourth. It s something I ll stress with them, Krueger said. They need to stay focused; every shot counts. So for East to come away with the score it did and knowing how close the conference is at the early point of the season, the message Krueger has been saying repeatedly for 20 years will have some weight for once. We ve been horrible here, Krueger said. I think I bring it up every year. We have just not been very stellar. This was huge. Slinger was led by Cal Meyer and Ben Wanke, with each shooting a 39. Hartford was led by Grant Rusniak with a 46. Each conference team hosts one mini-meet during the regular season. Monday s meet was hosted by West. In two weeks, East will be the host. Krueger would love to see a repeat. It s been eating at me for a long time, he said. This feels really good. If we do it in two weeks from now, that would be even better. WLT MINI-MEET At West Bend Country Club, par 36 Team scores 1. East 160; 2. West 161; 3. Beaver Dam 163; 4. Slinger 165; 5. Watertown 179; 6. (tie) Hartford Union and Oconomowoc Wisconsin Lutheran inc. Co-medalists Daniel Schwalen (WBW) and Eric Jahnke (WT) 37 Area scores East Kyle Rebholz 40, Devon Hanson 41, Mitch Saari 40, Andrew Mecus 39, Owen Gluck 43 West Alex Haas 42, John Nannetti 40, Daniel Schwalen 37, Jacob Droese 42, Kevin Albrecht 46 Slinger Cal Meyer 39, Ben Wanke 39, Austin Walsh 42, Jack Burns 45, Scott Darin 49 Hartford Union Tim Pridemore 48, Joseph Turchi 48, Jake Setterlun 47, Adam Butler 49, Grant Rusniak 46 Nicholas Dettmann/Daily News West Bend East s Devon Hanson hits his second shot on No. 16 during Monday s Wisconsin Little Ten Conference mini-meet at the West Bend Country Club.
4 GIRLS BASKETBALL Krewald signs with D-II program East senior to attend Saginaw Valley State By ADAM LINDEMER Daily News The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will have a familiar feel to it for West Bend East s Hailey Krewald. The senior signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Mich., about two hours north of Detroit. It s a huge weight off my shoulders, Krewald said. I don t have to worry about money or where I go. I have a place that wants to bring me in, be my next family and take me under their wings. Krewald said several players she played with in AAU also attend various GLIAC schools. A former East teammate, Lauren Gruber, will be a senior at Northern Michigan University next year. It s exciting and a little nerve-wracking, Krewald said of playing against familiar faces. I know how they all play, but it s nice knowing that even if I m far from home, I can still play against friends. The relief isn t just on Krewald though, as her parents, Myron and Beverly, can also breathe easier. It s a huge weight of our shoulders as well, Myron Krewald said of Hailey's scholarship. We are very proud. Beverly Krewald added, We can t measure how proud we are. She worked hard and kept her focus. We know she ll be taken well care of. Hailey Krewald dreamed of getting to this point even before she started kindergarten. Ever since I was 4 years old, I knew I wanted to play basketball in college, she said. So this is a dream come true, to finally sign and go play at that level. Krewald also had scholarship offers from Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois, Viterbo University in La Crosse and William Penn University in Iowa, all NAIA schools. The campus in Saginaw was a selling point for the Krewalds, but Hailey also felt right at home when talking to the basketball team and coaching staff. The campus was beautiful and as soon as I started talking to the coaches I knew they were going to be good coaches for me, she said. Everybody was very welcoming and it felt like a good feeling that this was going to be my home for the next four years. At Saginaw Valley State, part of Krewald s scholarship is academic, as she received the Foundation Scholarship, which is given annually to 60 students. Krewald carries a GPA at East. We never had to tell her to do her homework, Beverly Krewald said. She did it all on her own. She s had good, solid dedication to everything. Myron has noticed that hard-working attitude from his daughter came about at a young age as well. He coached his daughter from third through eighth grade. She was always a hard worker, Myron Krewald said. Even though there were times I yelled, making her an example, she always went that extra mile. Hailey Krewald knows her role for the Cardinals next year might not be a big one, but she also knows her time will come. I know that being a freshman, I m not going to get as much playing time as the older girls, Hailey Krewald said. But if I work hard, put in my dues and work hard in the offseason, I can get on the court.
