1 West Bend schools hit cable airwaves locally District buys 800 commercial slots By LINDA MCALPINE If you thought you saw a commercial about the West Bend School District while watching cable television Wednesday night, you weren t mistaken. The district has had a couple of television commercials created with the help of Image Studios in Appleton. The 30-second spot, titled I Will, will be aired on the channels of the area s three cable providers, Charter Communications, Time Warner and AT&T, West Bend School District Superintendent Ted Neitzke said Thursday afternoon as he watched the commercial clip on his laptop. People will start to see the ad pop up on such popular cable shows as Duck Dynasty, Mythbusters, Fox and Friends and Morning Joe. The commercial will air on cable channels such as National Geographic, Arts and Entertainment, Nickelodeon and others. Neitzke said the public may question the cost. I really thought that television commercials were terribly expensive, but the more we got into it, I was surprised at the reasonable cost, he said. Neitzke said the price to air a spot, depending on the time of day and the show, runs between $1 and $35 per time with the average being about $5.73. The district has purchased more than 800 slots for its commercial spot to run over the next 90 days, Neitzke said. Although he hasn t seen the completed commercial it will be presented at Monday night s meeting of the School Board for those who may not have seen it on television School Board President Randy Marquardt said he is excited about the prospect of letting a larger audience know about the things the district has to offer. When Ted approached me last fall about the idea of filming a commercial, my initial reaction was how can we afford to do that and should we spend the money to do it?, he said. I did find the cost to be reasonable and I believe the commercial will reach many more people than our mailings do. Neitzke said about $18,000 has been spent on filming and air time. When we mail a postcard out in a bulk mailing, it costs the district $3,600. When we mail out our annual report to every household, it costs us $8,000 for a mailing that likely few people read, Neitzke said. Marquardt said the promo falls in line with a goal the School Board set in summer to decrease the number of students who are open enrolling out of the district. I think it will get attention, Marquardt said. If we get two or three students to return to the district or come here through open enrollment, that s a good return on our investment in doing the commercial, Neitzke said. The commercial involved more than 100 students at all grade levels, Neitzke said. The ad also highlights West Bend, as a couple of scenes were shot in places like the Museum of Wisconsin Art. The commercial is part of a concerted effort to increase the awareness of not only the district but of the city, as well, Neitzke said. I think it should be a point of pride for the community, in addition to the district. A lot of thought went into which advertising spots to purchase, Neitzke said. We wanted to have it air during programs that moms, who are the educational decisionmakers, will be watching and ones that families will be watching together, Neitzke said.

Sensenbrenner names service academy nominees U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Menomonee Falls) announced Tuesday that 27 students from Wisconsin s 5th Congressional District received nominations to United States service academies, including students from Washington County. Nominees were chosen from applicants residing in Wisconsin s 5th District. Each applicant went through an application process culminating in a personal interview with a member of Sensenbrenner s Academy Selection Committee. Of the 27 students, four have been named principal nominees. If the principal nominee does not qualify or chooses not to attend, the alternates compete for the vacancy. Alternates are also part of a pool of applicants from which the academies will choose their incoming class. Owen Gluck of West Bend East High School has been nominated to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Gluck, the son of Scott and Tama Gluck, is a senior at West Bend East High School. Local woman talks about School Board run By LINDA MCALPINE Longtime resident Michelle Simpson is seeking election to the West Bend School Board. Simpson, 42, said Thursday that she decided to run for her first elected position because she teaches at the college level and I think I can bring a different perspective to the board. Simpson has three children, two attend parochial school and one attends West Bend East High School. Simpson is a registered nurse and a research scientist for Aurora Health Care. I feel I can bring an understanding of different viewpoints to the board, and I enjoy working with data, she said. Simpson is among four candidates who will be on the April 1 ballot. Three at-large seats are up for election. School Board President Rick Parks and Vice President Bart Williams are seeking re-election. Ryan Gieryn of West Bend has also declared his candidacy.

3 The third seat up for election is held by Todd Miller, who resigned in December due to moving out of the school district. The deadline for filing declaration of candidacy forms for the School Board was originally set for Tuesday at 5 p.m. but because classes were cancelled and the district office was closed both Monday and Tuesday, the deadline was extended to Wednesday at 5 p.m. According to the state s Government Accountability Board, the closing of the office where the candidacy papers were to be filed because of severe weather, would be considered a holiday for the purpose for the filing deadline and so an extension could be granted. ROUNDUP West holds off Beaver Dam West Bend West s boys swimming and diving team edged Beaver Dam on Thursday, The Spartans won four events, including the 200-yard medley relay, swam by Joe Pechstein, Kyle Parks, Zach Earhart and Adam Saueressig in 2: Saueressig also won the 50- and 100-freestyle races in and seconds, respectively. Parks took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1: Pechstein was second in the 50 freestyle in and Matt Albinger took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1: POSTPONEMENTS Area high school athletic events postponed because of weather have been rescheduled. West Bend West s varsity wrestling match against Beaver Dam, which was scheduled for Dec. 19, has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 4 in West Bend. West s girls varsity basketball game against Hartford Union, which was scheduled for Tuesday, has been rescheduled for 7:15 p.m. Jan. 27 in West Bend.

4 BOYS BASKETBALL Coming up big East makes key shots in 4th quarter By NICHOLAS DETTMANN Daily News Sports Editor Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games. West Bend East s Ben Vande Zande fit that description Thursday night against rival West Bend West. The senior made two key 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to create some separation in a victory for the Suns over the Spartans. I trust the kids that they re going to make key shots, East coach Ryan Tomczyk said. We ve got a lot of great players that can fill up the hoop. Before those baskets, Vande Zande, who went into the game averaging 10.8 points per game, had just five points and was battling foul trouble. He picked up his third foul with 6:49 left in the third quarter. I didn t take as many chances, Vande Zande said about his play after his third foul. With a zone defense, it s easy to give way to another defender. So I just made sure I didn t pick up any stupid fouls and played solid defense. Leading by 11 points with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter, Vande Zande made a 3-point basket to stretch the lead to Then, with 5:46 left, Vande Zande hit a second 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 47-30, prompting a timeout by West (4-6, 3-3). From there, the Suns were in control of a game that wasn t swinging one way or the other until Vande Zande s shots. After not making any 3-pointers in the first half, East had seven in the second. Not surprised, West coach Ryan Wietor said. They re a really good team. We gave shooters too much space, he added. With a team that shoots the ball as well as they do and as consistently as they do, that s what you get. West scored the game s first points. After that, East (8-3, 5-1) went on a 10-0 run and never trailed the rest of the game. West hung tight, with the help of Andrew and Jacob Duening. The twins combined to score 10 of West s 16 first-half points. Because both teams struggled with ball control in the first half the teams combined for 24 first-half turnovers West still had a chance, trailing by only three points at halftime. We weren t playing great, Wietor said. We were showing an improvement over the course of the first half. I thought we had come into halftime with a little bit of momentum even though we were down. Vande Zande also hit a 3-pointer with 2:29 left in the third quarter to give East a lead and prompting a timeout by West. It was the first time the lead got into double digits. I tell the kids if the shot is open they have the green light, Tomczyk said. West did all it could to stay close to its rival but, outside of the Duening twins, the Spartans struggled offensively. Andrew Duening finished the game with 19 points and nine rebounds. Collin Liebherr scored 19 points to lead the Suns and added five rebounds. Alex Manhardt had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Vande Zande finished with 11 points and three steals. With the victory, East has now won three straight games in the series after West had won eight of the previous 10. The victory also snaps a three-game slide and, most importantly for the Suns, it keeps them in striking distance of Wisconsin Little Ten Conference-leading Wisconsin Lutheran. The Vikings beat the Suns on Jan. 3 to take a one-game lead in the standings. They ll reconvene Feb. 11 at Wisconsin Lutheran.

The Vikings, who are 5-0 in the WLT, were idle Thursday and will host Slinger at 7:15 p.m. today. The Owls are 4-1 in the conference and are trying to keep the conference race interesting.
