6 COACH S COLUMN Our two preseason games against USA and Leeds Force were both positie exercises for us as regards conditioning and working on some things at both ends of the court and I was happy with how we competed in both games. I m really happy to hae a great core group of players returning and the additions of Olly and Joaquin are both big posities. Tonight will be a chance to see where we are at as a team een though it s ery early days and Team Newcastle will definitely be a stern test for us. Enjoy the game and let s hope for an exciting and positie season. Coach Mellor Hello and welcome to another season here at the Dragons Den as we get underway tonight against our isitors from the North East, Team Newcastle. It is our first Trophy Pool game which also includes Team Northumbria. Ian Hewitt s side were promoted last season along with Kent and look to hae recruited well oer the summer as they enter their first season in Diision One. The Trophy games are important because they re the first meaningful games for most teams and it gies us a good opportunity to see how we are progressing before the league campaign starts in a few weeks. COACHING Our junior coaching offers opportunities for players of all abilities to get inoled in the exciting sport of basketball. Our current sessions are below. 8 CHAIR S CHAT Hello and welcome eeryone to what is the first game of our 2107/18 campaign. There s a lot going on both on and off the court, and I d like to take the opportunity to welcome the new players to the team and also thank our olunteers who gie their time tirelessly to help the club. This eening we welcome Newcastle Uniersity to the Dragons Den. Though we beat them last season in the cup I m sure, as always, they hae traelled hoping for a W. They will be a different proposition to last year, haing gained promotion to D1. We go into the game on the back of a great performance against Leeds Force and we will be hoping to take this momentum into the new campaign. We are also launching a number of new initiaties for the club. We now hae a new range of tshirts aailable. Check out our website for more details. In the off season Coach Pawel restructured the juniors programme. Unfortunately this has meant we do not hae an U18s side for this season. Our highly successful U14s and U16s teams continue. We wish them eery success for the forthcoming season. Finally, I hope you all enjoy the game. Let s get behind the team and make some noise for the Dragons. GO DRAGONS!! 9 FIRST TEAM ROUNDUP The Dragons renewed local rialries when they traelled to Leeds Force for a preseason fixture. This was the first time the two sides had met since Leeds joined the elite British Basketball League (BBL), three seasons ago. Despite the perceied difference in standards, it was Bradford side that came out on top. At this stage of the preseason, as is often the case, both sides were below full strength, awaiting the arrial of some of their foreign players. The Dragons were without American point guard, Marcus Gooding, who was yet to return to the country. Leeds are in a period of rebuilding, with the appointment of new head coach, Mika Turunen, and haing lost some of Rafi Saipe photo by Alex Daniel last season s star players, including Clayfell Harris (Manchester Giants) and Rob Marsden (Sheffield Sharks). The term friendly is not something that can often be associated with games between these two sides, particularly with local pride at stake. From the off, it was the BBL side that took the early control of the game, quickly building up a 92 lead worrying times for the traelling Bradford fans. But the Dragons swiftly clicked into gear and just a couple of minutes later, Ricky Fetske picked up a defensie rebound and, after an exchange with Eisley Swaine, took the bucket shot for two points, leelling the game at eleen a piece. By the end of the quarter, the isitors were firmly in control at The Dragons started the second period at blistering pace with Rafi Saipe sinking a three pointer, whilst being clattered to the floor. Saipe then sank the extra free throw to open the quarter with a fourpoint score. Force were always a threat, particularly from the perimeter, and with fie minutes of the first half remaining, the gap was reduced to fie points (34 39). That was to be the home sides last score of the half and as the teams returned to their locker rooms at the interal the Dragons held a commanding fourteenpoint lead, at Leeds pushed hard during the third quarter, gradually whittling away at the deficit. Once again, half way through the period, the gap was cut to six points (4551) with the home side looking strong. No matter how hard they pushed, the Dragons came back and at the end of the penultimate quarter the isitors held onto their lead, Force opened the scoring in the final period, howeer, it was the Dragons that took firm control of the game, moing the ball around well and opening the gap back up. With six minutes of the game remaining, Turunen was forced to call a time out, with his side once more 14 points behind (5872). Try as they may, there was little that the home side could do to stem the Dragons momentum and it was the isitors that closed the game with a resounding nineteenpoint ictory (6887). Saipe capped an impressie personal performance with 28 points for the Dragons, whilst Fetske added 19 points and Jermayne Laing also picked up a notable 16.
