2 Take Six Primary/Mini-Basketball A case study of primary school development: Northampton Northampton is a centre for the development of Take Six Primary/Mini-Basketball. The Mini-Basketball season starts in November and is completed by March (the dark evening s season). To help the teachers prepare, a Take Six Mini-Basketball course is organised just prior to the start of the programme. Schools are then invited to bring year 5 and 6 children to three Come & Learn sessions. The Come & Learn sessions are very popular and important to the success of the Take Six Programme. The children are introduced to the basic Take Six rules using practical activities. By the end of the sessions they should know: How to move without running with the ball (travelling rule). Dribble without using two hands (illegal dribble). A dribble ends when the ball returns to being held in two hands(illegal dribble rule). Physical contact should be avoided and the person who is responsible for contact could be fouling (personal foul). When the ball or person with the ball goes out of court, including touching the line, the ball is awarded to the other team (out of bounds rule). In the Come & Learn children are also introduced to the role of scorer and timekeeper. Some practice games of Take Six are played in mixed school groups with teachers and young leaders assigned to help the teams and officials. Schools then decide whether they would like to enter the regular fixture programme. This year 16 teams entered and they were split geographically. The group fixture programme was played over 3 weeks. Some schools could not make every week but the programme is now on target to finish as planned. The top three teams at each centre will come together for a finals tournament The teams of 6 play 10 minute 3 v 3 cross-court games, with the 3 substitutes encouraged to become an official. Roles were changed at half time with players becoming officials and vice-versa. Two children timed the games centrally. Referees were teachers and young leaders. At the end of the event all the children were congratulated on their improvement. Details of local clubs that run Mini- Basketball sessions were given to the children to give them exit and progression routes. 3 Mini-Basketball England presents the: Take Six National Programme Regional Development Day Venue Babington Community College, Strasbourg Drive, Leicester, LE4 0SZ Date & Time To be confirmed Invitation Mini-Basketball England invites you to learn about the Primary School minibasketball game specially developed to be used in inter-school, intra-school games or at Mini-Basketball Festivals. There is no charge for the day. Target Audience Potential Take Six registered providers, School Sports Coordinators, Community Basketball coaches, Sports development units, basketball club officials and teachers with an interest in organising a Take Six Mini-Basketball programme for a group of schools. Participants will be given a free Mini-Basketball, a Take Six Basketball information booklet and an application form to become a Take Six Mini- Basketball registered provider. The session will include practical activities and participants should wear comfortable sports clothing.
