WEEKLY ROUNDUP *900th win for Mike Dreier at New London-Spicer *Rich Glas in retirement *Olstad trio coaching *Big win by Eden Prairie *DGF girls trip 4A teams Volume 24 Issue No. 6 January Both teams unbeaten at the turn By Bruce Strand Noah Slagter, 21-ppg guard, drives against Apollo Curt Hogg, West Central Tribune Only one school in Minnesota is unbeaten in both boys and girls basketball heading into New Year s. Hints: Home of the Kaffe Fest. Kandiyohi County seat. Astronaut Pinky Nelson s home town. Once had a prime-time TV movie made about it. And: has never won a state title, not in basketball anyway. Time s up. It s the Willmar Cardinals. The Cardinal boys were 10-0 and the girls 9-0 through Tuesday, both ranked No. 8 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News. Both teams are coached by ex- Cardinals: Matt Williams with the boys and Dustin Carlson with the girls. The Cardinal boys, last year and 6-18 the year before, have cruised through their first ten games, none closer than 12 points, although they ve faced just three teams with winning records. Most notable victory was against Class 4A conference rival St. Cloud Tech by Tech was 5-1 at the time (now 6-5). Noah Slagter, senior guard who was a double-digit scorer in the previous Hannah Johnson, one of three players averaging around 10 points, lines up a free shot. two losing seasons, is popping in 21 points per game. Junior forward Trey Dirksen averages 11.6, junior guard Ty Roelofs 9.5 and senior guard Adam Roux 8.5. Williams attributes the success to dedication to the weight room this summer, and just really good chemistry between our junior and senior classes. He added, It feels like we have been young for so long and now we are not. Our nineman rotation is all juniors and seniors. Also, the boys are zealous about strong defense creating easy offense, he said. Slagter is a sweet shooter 41 percent on three s, 54 on two s, 89 Bruce Strand, MN Basketball News Willmar: continued on page 2

That was the case in Hutchinson on Tuesday when they trailed by eight but took charge down the stretch and won He is playing with even more confidence this year, Williams said, as he has more experience and athleticism around him. The Cardinal girls, coached by Dustin Carlson, are 9-0 with five wins over teams with winning records. They ve gone and the last two years, reaching state last year. Willmar s Caitlyn Ogdahl, Jordyn Swaboda (25) and Carly Wedel converged on Hutchinson s Morgan Ellis during a win. Bruce Strand, MN Basketball News The Cardinals won the Wild-Card holiday tournament (co-hosted by the New London-Spicer Wildcats) for the first time since 2009 with victories of over Albany (6-3) and over Minnehaha Academy (6-4). Carly Wedel had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the finals and was named tournament MVP. The Cardinals have no prolific scorer like the boys do, but seven girls are averaging between five and 10 points, which makes us more difficult to defend against and scout against, said Carlson. They are Cayle Hovland (10.5 ppg), Hannah Johnson (10), Madi Linbo (10, off the bench), Carly Wedel (7), Jordyn Swoboda (6), Sadie Raitz (5) and Abby Berkow (5). Hovland and Wedel snag about 8 rebounds per game. Johnson, junior guard, averages 3.5 steals and 5.5 rebounds. We knew coming in that Hannah, Cayle, Abby, Carly and Jordyn would be our main scorers, Carlson said, but having some other girls step up too has been fun to see. By playing 11 or 12 girls per game without having a big drop-off in skill level, the coach said, the Cardinals We also believe that the girls are more invested when they know they have the chance to get minutes in the varsity game, Carlson said. We pride ourselves on giving maximum effort on defense. The girls take that seriously and it earns them more shot opportunities on offense. Williams praised the school district for being really invested in athletics with the recent addition of two auxiliary gymnasiums and a new weight room and fitness center. The community really supports us and the athletes can feel that and it helps to motivate them, Williams said. How long has it been since Willmar had two unbeaten teams at the turn? Well, not that long ago the season, when the girls finished 23-5 and reached the state tournament while the boys went 19-10, stopped one game short of state. Oh, that movie? In Willmar, back when there was no such thing as equal pay for equal work, a group of female bank employees went on a gutsy strike in 1976, picketing in below-zero weather, and took the bank to court. The case got thrown out on a technicality but caused repercussions and change throughout the industry. Orion Studio s 1984 prime-time movie about the Willmar Eight (they called it A Matter of Sex ) was a good rendition of the events, with Jean Stapleton, best known Edith Bunker, in the lead role. Willmar has made 14 state trips in boys basketball, most recently 2008, and seven in girls basketball. The only Cardinal team to reach the finals was girls in 2004; they lost to Minneapolis North.

Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 5 Page 3 Coaching legend exits; no regrets By Bruce Strand Rich Glas, who started and ended his coaching career with Division III teams in Minnesota, and in between made the University of North Dakota a force during 18 years there, retired last spring for health reasons. Glas, one of seven active college coaches with over 600 wins his final season, was featured recently in the Jamestown (N.D.) Sun by Tom Miller. Diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago, the 69-year-old Bemidji native had surgery that removed the cancer, but the health scare changed his plans. That kind of gave me the push because I thought I was going to coach until I was 75, Glas told the Sun. I was feeling good; then all of a sudden I thought this might be too late do the things Sandy and I want to do. I didn t want to hold her up because I was playing a game. It s worked out great. I m a happy camper. Glas and wife his Sandy, also recently retired, have moved to a lake home near Nevis, MN. After playing for Bemidji State, where his father was college president, Glas embarked on a coaching career that spanned 48 years, 37 as head coach. Glas was 28 in 1977 when he coached Minnesota- Morris to the its first conference championship. He Rich Glas wanted to coach until age 75 but a health issue changed his outlook headed the Cougars and then Willamette (Ore.) for six years each. After a stint as assistant coach at University of Hawaii, Glas arrived at Grand Forks as head coach. His first team there was 8-20, a team record for losses. But his second season brought the return of an injured star (Dave Vonesh) and a talented transfer from Louisiana State (Scott Guldseth) and UND placed third in the nation with a 28-7 record. Glas went on to post eight 20-win seasons, take six teams to NCAA tournaments, and compile a record, making him UND s winningest coach. He spent the last nine years at Concordia (Moorhead) as men s head coach and athletic director. Rich and Sandy have a daughter, Randi, in Oregon, and a son, Jeff, in Bismarck. Jeff was an all-america kicker for the UND football team. His favorite coaching memory, he told the Sun, came during his last season with the Cobbers when about 40 of his former players lined up to form a tunnel for Glas to walk out onto the court. It s nice to get the wins, but they really disappear, Glas said. The relationships never go away. RJM s Hurt scoring at a record pace Matthew Hurt, Rochester John Marshall s 6-foot-9 junior blue-chipper, is averaging 39.7 points in leading the Rockets to a 9-0 record. That includes a 51-point onslaught against Robbinsdale Armstrong in a win, which was both a Rocket record and Rotary US Bank Holiday Classic record. My coaches put me in good position to score and I just have the easy part, just scoring, Hurt commented to the Rochester Post-Bulletin. The state record for Class 4A players is J.P. Maura s 32.2 ppg for state champ Lakeville North in The overall record is held by Bjorn Broman of Lakeview Christian in Duluth in Four of the top five PPG s are held by Broman brothers. Anders had 43.7 and and Bjorn also had Joel Mc- Donald averaged 38.6 for Chisholm in Two girls share the state record of 37.0 Carlie Wagner (current Gopher senior) for New Richland-Hartland- Ellendale-Geneva in and Ta Kendra Elbert for Tartan in The top five also include Elbert s 36.4 and Braham star Rebekah Dahlman s 35.3 twice.

Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 5 Page 4 Dreier nabs 900th at New London-Spicer By Bruce Strand Mike Dreier, in his 40th year of coaching, all with the New London-Spicer girls, reached yet another milestone Tuesday evening. The Wildcats presented Dreier with his 900th win, over Montevideo at home. To be honest with you, I really don t feel it s about me, said Dreier, when interviewed by WCCO TV. It s kind of a shared effort that so many parents, so many kids, so many assistant coaches have all contributed to. The Burnsville native and Hamline graduate has been the state s winningest coach for several years. His total record is 900 wins and 171 losses. There s been 17 state tournament trips, the most of any coach, with two state championships and six runner-up finishes. His Wildcats have been conference champions 26 times in 39 seasons. His teams have also won several Pacesetter tournaments over the years including two last summer. Olstad trio convenes as Lake City staff Three members of the Olstad family that was so prominent in Elgin-Millville basketball have relocated to Lake City as the Tiger girls coaching staff. Clay Olstad is the head coach of the Tigers (currently 6-5), with his father Clark and sister Candace Dudley (the former head coach) as assistants, each in their second year in this capacity. Mike Dreier posed with four of the 30-plus Wildcat alums on hand for his 900th win. West Central Tribune photo Over 30 former players were on hand for the occasion and posed with Dreier for a photo after the game. Activities director John Vraa presented him with a plaque. The second-most wins in girls basketball is 719 by Myron Glass of Rochester Lourdes, who has the most state titles, eight. The only boys coaches over 900 are Bob McDonald of Chisholm with 1,012 and Bob Brink of Rocori with 936. All three are retired. Candace and Kali starred for Elgin- Millville and while Cole and Clay did the same for Plainview-Elgin- Millville. All four went on to Division II ball at Concordia-St. Paul. Candace and Kali helped CSP win conference titles in 2007 and It s great coaching with Clay, and being on the bench with your son and daughter, said Clark, in Rochester Post-Bulletin feature by Andrew Link. It s just another opportunity for more family time and to be around the great game of basketball. Clark, who was the Elgin-Millville girls coach when his daughters played, is middle school principal at Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Clay and Candace are teachers at Lake City. Their siblings Kali and Cole Olstad are paying close attention while working as accountants in the metro area. About having his dad and sister Clay Olstad, on the bench with him, Clay told Lake City girls the Post-Bulletin: This is how I head coach was brought up. We didn t know anything else. The conversations are good. It s good to have a lot more eyes on things and different perspectives. Candace was Lake City s head coach for five years before stepping away because she has two children and one more on the way.

Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 5 Page 6 Eden Prairie accuracy aces out Edina By Bruce Strand Eden Prairie and Edina, two teams who ve been ranked No. 1 this year and will probably battle for their section championship, squared off on Dec. 27, with Eden Prairie winning at home. The Eagles, a 40-percent three-point team for the season, drilled 14 treys against Edina, six of them by sophomore Drake Dobbs on the way to 24 points. Austin Andrews sank 14 points, John Henry 12 and Kyler Kluge 11. For Edina, Anders Nelson potted 17 points, Jack Middleton 13 and Luke Glenna 12. Edina (5-4), currently ranked No. 7, was installed at No. 1 after defeating Cretin-Derham Hall (the current No. 1) and Apple Valley (No. 1 at the time) early in the season. The Hornets have gone 2-4 since then, all the losses against top-ten ranked teams. Eden Prairie (7-1), ranked No. 4, was No. 1 for a week after Edina gave up the top spot. Eden Prairie then fell to Lakeville North, their only blemish so far. The New Richland-Hartland- Ellendale-Geneva boys graduated heavily after reaching the Class 3A state tournament last year but has started this season 8-1, losing only to a 3A team, St. Croix Lutheran, Benji Lundberg, a returning starter, is the lone double-digit scorer, averaging 21 points. The Medford boys snapped a 30-game losing streak on Dec. 21, edging Kenyon-Wanamingo So happy to see these guys win, especially our seniors, first year coach Todd Schneider told the Owatonna People s Press. We ve got a great group of seniors that work hard every day. It was a big moment for the kids and the program to get our first win out of the way. St. Cloud Cathedral senior forward Michael Schaefer tallied 39 points, 19 of them on free shots, while snagging Eden Prairie sophomore Drake Dobbs sank six 3 s against Edina. Bruce Strand, MN Basketball News 16 rebounds, in a win over St. Cloud Apollo on Dec. 12. Schaefer is averaging 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Crusaders (7-2). Hopkins coach Kenny Novak told the MN Basketball News early this season that he didn t expect the team to be one of his best, but the Royals are looking better and better. Their 10-1 record includes a drubbing of Minnehaha Academy, the defending Class 2A champion that s beaten three other ranked Class 4A teams, on Dec. 23. Anthony Davis delivered 31 points and Kerwin Walton 20. Jalen Suggs hit 27 for Minnehaha Academy. Schaeffer Academy, a 24th-year Christian school in Rochester, enjoyed just its second-ever winning season last year with a 21-6 mark, and started this season 7-0. Schaeffer then lost four straight, three of them against big metro schools in an Augsburg tournament. Cole Bothun, senior guard, is averaging 19.4 points, while seniors Kade Schwartz and Christian Lahr add about 12 ppg each. Rochester Lourdes had a boys single-game record set at the Rotary US Bank Classic as Matthew Hayford poured in 40 points in a win over Hutchinson on Dec. 28. The 5-foot- 11 junior guard caught fire that night, going 15-for-20 from the field, 5-for-5 on three-pointers, and 5-for-7 at the line. Hayford is averaging 19 points and four assists, while sophomore forward Colin Meade adds 18.4 points and eight rebounds per game, for the Eagles (6-3). Woodbury s Michael Jones poured in 39 points, 25 of them in the second half, as the Royals handed North St. Paul a loss on Dec. 21. One man beat us, North St. Paul coach Damian Johnson told Minnesota Basketball Hub. Mike Jones had an incredible second half. There s not much we could do to stop him. He scored early in the paint, then hit some three s when the defense sagged on him, and added some drives to the hoop.

Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 5 Page 7 DGF girls top two strong 4A teams By Bruce Strand The Dilworth-Glydon-Felton girls, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, knocked off two strong Class 4A teams to capture the Moorhead Holiday Tournament trophy Dec The Rebels (7-0) beat St. Francis (6-3), a much taller team, with Natalie Steichen scoring 18 points, Katlyn Brenna 16, Grace Steichen 15 and Allie Critchley 13. Sydney Zgutowicz led St. Francis with 16 points. DGF followed with a conquest of Moorhead (8-4) with five double-digit scorers: Brenna 16, Natalie Steichen 14, Rae Critchley 12, Grace Steichen 11 and Allie Critchley 10. They held Moorhead star Sam Haiby to 16 points along with 12 rebounds and seven assists. I m just really proud of the girls. They battled every possession, D-G-F coach Tom Critchley told the Fargo Forum. I liked our focus and our poise, playing two teams that were bigger than us.. The annual duel of northern small-school powers Roseau and Mountain Iron-Buhl produced a freewheeling offensive battle with the Rams handing the Rangers (11-1) their lone loss on Dec. 22. Roseau junior Kacie Borowicz drilled 35 points and her freshman sister Katie Borowicz added 18. Haley Ostgaard and Emma Waling chipped in eight each. MIB center Mary Burke tallied 35 points. Allie Negan added 19 and Madisen Overbye 18. Roseau (6-4), the defending Class 2A champion, lost to the current top-ranked 2A team, Sauk Centre, on Dec. 28 at the Perham tournament. The top two ranked teams in Class 4A girls clashed Dec. 21 with No. 2 Eastview prevailing over No. 1 Hopkins at the St. Olaf Holiday Hoops Classic in Northfield. Eastview (10-0) scorched the nets with 50 percent shooting, including 10-for-20 on three-pointers. Megan Walstad tallied 15 points, Emma Carpenter 14 and Andrea Abrams 13. They overcame a 30-point performance by Hopkins super sophmore Paige Bueckers. Dlayla Chakolis added 12 for the Royals (12-1). The Worthington girls have been frustrated in recent years by section seeds, owing to strength of schedule compared to the Mankato teams, but the Trojans (5-5) struck a blow with a thumping of Mankato West (7-4) on Dec. 28 in a Marshall tournament. That gives us legitimacy. Before, we had wins. But they were against smaller teams, coach Eric Lindner told the Worthington Globe. Trojan sophomore forward Nyamer Diew scored 24 points and was a key performer on defense. Emma Thuringer added 22 points. The Trojans dominated the rebounding Class 1A s top-ranked Lyle-Pacelli (10-1) and 6-foot-5 Kristi Fett dominated Hayfield s tournament Dec Fett sank a team-record 37 points and snagged 16 rebounds in a win over Tri-City United, and notched 36 points and 12 rebounds in a conquest of No. 5 Hayfield. Olivia Christianson added 25 points against TCU. Lyle-Pacelli 1,000-pointer Brooke Walter has sacrificed her own scoring to keep Fett involved, the Austin Herald noted. Walter had three points, four rebounds and eight assists against Hayfield. In the semifinals, Hayfield (8-2) nailed 15 three-pointers in an rout of Kenyon- Wanamingo. Elecia Brown netted 19 points, Olivia Matti 18, and Maggie Streightiff and Carrie Rutledge 15 each. Lake City his 17 three s but loses to Hylanders What are the odds against giving up 17 three-point shots in a high school game and still winning? The Columbia Heights boys did just that, outlasting Lake City in overtime in the finals of the Rotary tournament in Rochester on Dec. 29. Duendra Roberson sank 27 points for the Hylanders (6-0), ranked No. 4 in Class 3A. Wendell Matthews added 19, Amir Davis 18, and Quentin Hardrict 17. Hardict, the floor leader, left the game with an injury during regulation, which ended Lake City arguably is one of the most prolific outside shooting high school teams I have coached against, said Hylander coach Willie Braziel. We change defenses often and apply pressure on the ball, and they handled it very well. Nathan Heise sank nine 3-pointers on the way to 35 points for Lake City (8-2) ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, Marc Kjos had five treys and 24 points, and Zach Bremer added 21 points. Regulation ended 78 The Tigers kept nailing three s in the overtime but committed two costly turnovers down the stretch.
