WEEKLY ROUNDUP *North Woods boys, D-G-F girls win duels of unbeatens *Tre Jones will play in McDonald s all-star game *Hayfield hosts Showcase *DGF girls trip 4A teams Volume 24 Issue No. 8 January Trojans serve notice Seven teams fall from boys unbeaten ranks Seven previously unbeaten boys teams, most notably Austin, were handed their first defeat in the past week. Owatonna (8-4) knocked off the Packers (12-1), who had beaten five ranked teams, Tuesday evening. (See separate story.) Wayzata s Jenna Johnson protects the ball from Hopkins Kayhla Adams. In rear are Dlayla Chakolis and Paige Bueckers. Bruce Strand, MN Basketball News Wayzata snaps 13-game skid against dynastic section rival Hopkins By Bruce Strand If ever the Wayzata girls were to break their six-year losing streak against Hopkins, this would have to be the year. Right? The Trojans, for once, had a better record (15-0) than the Royals (14-1) entering their first clash of on Friday, Jan. 12. Losers of 13 straight to their conference rival, the Trojans looked destined to make it 14 when they gave up the first six baskets of the game, fell behind 17-3, and still trailed at halftime. But Wayzata, faced with the herculean task of overcoming a 15-point deficit against a supremelytalented team, was able to do just that. The Trojans gathered steam gradually, took the lead with 3:50 left on a Mimi Schrader jumper and held on for a victory. Wayzata: continued on page 2 Tartan was 11-0 before losing two a pair of ranked teams, to North St. Paul (9-2) and to St. Thomas Academy (7-6). In Class 1A, five teams were handed their first blemish in the past week. Springfield (11-1) lost to Redwood Valley (7-5), Nevis (10-1) lost to North Woods (13-0), Cass Lake-Bena (14-1) lost to Mayer Lutheran (10-3), Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdahl (11-1) lost to Park Christian (5-9), and Minneota (12-1) lost to Dawson-Boyd (9-4). We re down to five unbeaten boys teams none in Class 4A, as Tartan was the last one, and only Willmar in Class 3A. Also unscathed are St. Charles and Perham in Class 2A, and North Woods and Russell- Tyler-Ruthton in 1A.
Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 19 Page 2 Wayzata: trailed 17-3 but rallied to beat Royals Continued from page 1 It means a lot, said Trojan junior center Kallie Theisen. We haven t beaten them for a while. I never had. Schrader, junior guard, led with 20 points, three of her team s nine 3-pointers, and five free shots down the stretch. Schrader, in her fourth varsity season, had lost to Hopkins eight times, and Theisen, in her third year, six times. Freshman guard Jenna Johnson added 15 points. Theisen and sophomore guard Jasmine Smiley potted 10 each. We just had to calm down on offense, and make some stops on defense, and that s what we did, said Theisen. Hopkins mustered just half as many points in the second half (22) as it did in the first half. Paige Bueckers finished with 15 points, Angie Hammond 14, Dlayla Chakolis 13 and Raena Suggs 10. Our resilience was crucial, Wayzata coach Mike Schumacher said. There was no magic bean. It was two very talented teams battling it out and one of them had to lose. The Mr. Basketball committee has announced the names of 26 seniors still in contention for the award, which will be reduced to 10 in early February. Cretin-Derham Hall has three players on the list: Daniel Oturu, Sy Chatman, and Ryan Larson. Teams with two each Hopkins with Anthony Davis and Joe Hedstrom, and Minneapolis North with Tayler Johnson and Odell Wilson. Kallie Theisen (21) of Wayzata outreaches Angie Hammond of Hopkins for a rebound. Bruce Strand, MN Basketball News It helped that Hopkins, blazing in the first half, went stone-cold in the last few minutes, both from the field and the line. Schumacher said a switch to a 2-3 zone helped because what we were doing in the first half sure wasn t working. Wayzata was 22-7 last year. They got blown out twice by Hopkins in conference, but gave the state runner-up Royals a good battle in the section finals, losing Headed by the veterans Thiesen and Schrader, the Trojans enjoy excellent depth. Schrader is a triplet, with her sisters Ella and Soni also in the mix. (The win over Hopkins came on their birthday, by the way.) Three sophomores in their second varsity season are Jasmine Smiley, Alivia Arnebeck and Lydia Hay. The Trojans got two nice boosts this year with 6-3 sophomore Annika Stewart moving in from Minot, N.D., and 6-foot freshman Johnson making a nice impact as a varsity rookie. Wayzata has played in just one girls state tournament, in Having Hopkins in your section makes it difficult. But the Trojans have served notice that they are a viable contender this year. Twenty-six in contention for Mr. Basketball award Also named are Jarius Cook of Park Center, Duoth Gach of Austin, Damani Hayes of Mankato East, Michael Jones of Woodbury, Tre Jones of Apple Valley, Gabe Kalscheur of DeLaSalle, Noah Kannegiesser of Hancock, Owen King of Caledonia, Shae Mitchell of Lakeville South, Anders Nelson of Edina, Jarvis Omersa of Orono, Nathan Rund of Fergus Falls, Michael Schaefer of St. Cloud Cathedral, Noah Slagter of Willmar, Brevyn Spann-Ford of St. Cloud Tech, Eric Tiedman of Jordan, Matt Todd of Monticello, Calvin Wishart of Delano, and Ethan Youso of Virginia.
Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 19 Page 3 Unbeatens duel I: North Woods tips Nevis By Bruce Strand There are few clashes of top-ten Class 1A teams, because the small schools are spread out to every corner of the state, unlike the big schools, mostly in the metro area, who butt heads all the time. However, top-ranked North Woods and No. 3 Nevis, both unbeaten, were brought together to duel in the Dr. Martin Luther King Classic hosted by Duluth East High School on Saturday. North Woods (13-0) foiled the Tigers 53-39, pulling away in the last eight minutes after trailing The Nevis game was good for both teams, said North Woods coach Will Kleppe. Based on their average points allowed, and the game itself, this was our toughest challenge to date. The key to us pulling ahead was some turnovers we created... our best defensive effort so far. Nevis (11-1), allowing just 37.6 points per game, was able to slow the Grizzlies race-horse offense, which has generated 77 to 116 points in every other game. Logan Tinnes of Nevis gets a block against Trevor Morrison. Cade Goggleye led the Grizzlies with 19 points and seven assists. Tate Olson had 12 points and three steals, and Trevor Morrison 10 points and 11 rebounds. They were missing one double-digit scorer with a family committment. Jack Landquist scored 13 points for Nevis. Luke DeWulf was next with eight. They went on a little run to lead by six or eight, and then held the ball and made us foul, which usually turns out the way it did, said Nevis coach Scott Kramer. North Woods has a very nice team. They have really good guard play, and Goggleye is an extremely smart player. They have a couple of big guys that they rely on to defend the post. I would say that their weakness would be their depth. Kramer said his team remains a work in progress after starting a week late due to the football team s playoff run, and taking a holiday break so our guys could finally get away for a few days. Kleppe assessed: The season is going well. We are not playing what I think is our best basketball, but that is what we are working towards. Unbeatens duel II: D-G-F clips Cougars Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and its Minnesota-Moorhead recruit Natalie Steichen have once again foiled Ada-Borup/Norman County West. The Cougars are 81-5 over the last three seasons. Three of the losses have come against D-G-F. The Rebels (12-0) scuttled the Cougars (10-1) again Tuesday, 77-70, in a duel of unbeaten teams. As usual, the linch-pin was Steichen with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Cougar coach David Smart quipped to Steichen, during post-game hand shakes, that he will be glad to see her graduate. D-G-F coach Tom Critchley said later, He s not the first coach to say that. She has just torched us, Smart told the Fargo Forum. She is so good with the ball. She makes the rest of her teammates so much better. They have a lot of kids that can shoot it, but Natalie can shoot it, she can dish it and she can play D. She got a couple of those huge rebounds. The Cougars bolted to an early 18-7 lead but couldn t hold off the Rebels, who also had Katlyn Brenna and Rae Critchley with 15 points each and Maria Watt 10. Our younger girls are stepping up and filling the spots of some of the older girls from last year, Steichen told the Forum. Everyone is sharing the ball, and we re all playing together and doing our jobs. For the Cougars, Maddie Smart scored 21 points, Brooklyn Erickson 19 and Mariah McKeever 12.

Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 19 Page 6 Austin finally felled, by Owatonna By Bruce Strand The Owatonna boys accomplished what three highlyranked Big Nine teams unable to, knocking off Austin on Tuesday evening. Andrew Jackson and Dalton Kubista hit 16 points each, Nolan Malo 13, Alex Raichle 12, and Jason Williamson 11. Abe Havelka had just four but might have hit the biggest shot of the night, Williams said, about a threeball with four minutes left after Austin pulled within six. The Huskies (8-4) pulled off the upset in the No. 2 ranked Packers own gymnasium, too. Austin is such a good program, and they have had our number for I don t even know how many years, Huskies coach Josh Williams told the Owatonna People s Press. Playing in their house, we executed about as well as we possibly could have. We took care of the ball, defended well and played 36 minutes of really good basketball. I thought this was one of those cases where one team wanted to win the game more than the other one, Packers coach Kris Fadness told the Austin Herald. I think there s no doubt there was a letdown tonight, but we were playing a really good team. Owatonna s good. We ve sort of faced a gauntlet here and we, for whatever reason, didn t have it tonight. Duoth Gach sank 19 points and Moses Issa 11 for Austin. Owatonna had lost 11 straight games to Austin, going back to a win on Jan. 27, The key factors were Owatonna s rebound edge, good ball control (just 14 percent turnovers), shooting 49 percent, having five double-digit scorers, and Austin being way off on 3-pointers, just 5-for-27. Austin had won its previous three games over Top-Ten ranked conference foes Northfield, Mankato East, and Rochester John Marshall. Last Saturday, with 1,300 fans jammed in, the Packers pummeled RJM at home, pouring in 12 three-pointers. Issa sank 19 points, Gach 15, Tate Hebrink 14 and Dongrin Deng 10. RJM s allstater Matthew Hurt poured in 31 points. Montrae Hiatt scored 18 off the bench, including four 3-pointers. Tre Jones selected for McDonald s all-stars A pple Valley point guard Tre Jones (left) has been selected for the annual Mc- Donald s national high school all-star game, slated for March 28 in Atlanta. The 6-foot-3 guard, who has led Apple Valley to a pair of state championships, is averaging 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5.8 assists and four steals. He will play for Duke next year. Twenty-four seniors are chosen for the McDonald s all-star game, held annually since Jones is the 13th Minnesotan to be chosen for the game. One was his brother Tyus four years ago. Borowicz passes 2,000 as role expands at Roseau Kacie Borowicz recently became a 2,000-point scorer at Roseau, a school that has a pair of 3,000-pointers her sister Kiley (3,223) and Megan Taylor (3,300). recognition, coach Kelsie Didricksen told the Grand Forks Herald. Kiley made big plays; she was more flashy and powerful. Kacie is more steady, more consistent. Kacie, a junior scoring 24 points per game for the Rams (10-4), averaged 17.2 for last year s unbeaten Class 2A state champions while Kiley led with 27 ppg. Kacie s minutes and shot attempts have naturally increased this year with Kiley gone (to Minnesota-Moorhead) and the team not as deep. Her style is different and she hasn t gotten as much Kacie said she knew everyone talked about Kiley but she loved playing with her. Without Kiley, and with my younger sister (Katie) on the team, it s a lot different. Kiley was a huge scorer. I feel like I have to take on a bigger role to get to the basket more, to get more assists and more points, to make up for what Kiley did.

Pacesetter Newsletter Minnesota Basketball News January 19 Page 8 Slagter s 40 lifts Willmar (13-0) in OT By Bruce Strand The unbeaten Willmar boys were pushed to doubleovertime by Sauk Rapids-Rice but prevailed behind 40 points by senior guard Noah Slagter on Friday. Slagter shot 11-for-17 from the field, 6-for-10 on triples, and 12-for-12 at the line. The Cardinals (13-0) trailed by six in the first overtime but rallied on three-pointers by Ryan Slette and Slagter, the latter at the buzzer to tie it The second overtime had less suspense after the Storm (8-4) lost their top two scorers on fouls: Cody Landwehr, who had 33 points and 14 rebounds, and Deng Deang, who had 21 points. Drey Dirksen added 18 points and nine rebounds for Willmar. Mankato East won a duel of top-five ranked teams over section rival Marshall Tuesday. Damani Hayes led the Cougars (13-1) with 22 points, going 9-for- 9 on free shots, including two clinchers with 16 seconds left. Kong Kong sniped for 18 points. Ghana Ochan added 13 points and Joich Kong 10. Keeping Marshall (10-3) in the game was Trey Lance with 31 points and 14 rebounds. The Tigers trailed and pulled as close as one point late. Park Christian took a 4-8 record into the game against unbeaten Norman County East/Ulen-Hittedahl on Jan. 11 and rose to the challenge to beat the Titans Steele Senske led with 33 points. Kai Nellermoe added 17, Brock Aamodt 14 and Ethan Jorgensen 11. Jessica Remer regards herself as more of a defensive stopper than scorer, her mom and coach, Joann, told the Grand Forks Herald. But with No. 2 scorer Ivy Edwards sidelined with an injury, mom called on Jessica to shoot more. The junior guard responded with 26 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and six steals, leading a win over Red Lake Falls on Jan. 11, a duel of likely contenders for their sub-section title. She had an all-around good game, not only scoring but making things happen for the other girls with her steals and passes, the coach assessed. Baden Noennig got open off a screen, took a pass from Brendan Feltmann, and sank the game-winning layup just before the horn as No. 6 Mayer Lutheran handed No. 4 Cass Lake-Bena its first loss on Saturday, in the Super 60 Showcase at Maple Grove. Noennig, who scored 25 points, told Minnesota Basketball Hub that he saw his teammate getting double-teamed so he called for (the ball) as loud as I could, and got a screen from Matt Menth. The Crusaders (9-4) had led by 18 in the first half. Cass Lake-Bena (13-1) stormed back and took a lead on a three by Michael Reyes. Arnold Kingbird sank 14 points and Jarrell Jacobs 11 for the Panthers. The Springfield boys are no longer unbeaten. Redwood Valley edged the Tigers on Jan. 11 as Mitch Irlbeck poured in 24 points, including the game-winning, turn-around jump shot in the paint in the last five seconds while guarded by Springfield star Isaac Fink. I drove in on him, spun around to the left and there was no help side there so I kind of just threw it up and it dropped, he told the New Ulm Journal. Cole Woodford also scored 24 points for the Cardinals, a Class 2A team with a 7-5 record. They led by as much as and held on. Fink led Springfield (10-1) with 24 and Tanner Vogel added 19. Seven steals by Jody Hansen helped Sleepy Eye-St. Mary s (12-3) rally from a deficit to beat Minnesota Valley Lutheran Friday. Hansen made a steal and passed to Sara Zinniel for a layup that pulled the Knights within 52-51, then swiped the inbounds pass, got fouled, and hit both free shots for a lead. Hansen had four points. I m not the best shooter, she told the New Ulm Journal, so on the defensive end, I knew how to pick it up. Madison Mathiowetz scored 18 and Cassie Heinrichs 15. For MVL (7-7), Haley Birkholz sank 20 points. Kittson County Central junior Cora Kujava got her 1,000th point during an win over Goodridge- Grygla-Gatzke on Jan. 12. She s averaging 18.8 points for the Bearcats (9-5).
