The Mavericks are 13-0 at home, 11-7 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites. The Mavericks claimed their first-ever Sun Belt regular season title with a 14-4 record against league competition. The title marked UTA s third overall league championship in program history (2 - Southland Conference). UTA also earned the No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt Championships in New Orleans. The Mavericks won its quarterfinal game, 74-51, over No. 8 Coastal Carolina before dropping a semifinal decision to in-state rival 4th seeded Texas State. Junior forward Kevin Hervey was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. The Arlington native is UTA s first SBC Player of the Year, the first Maverick to earn conference Player of the Year since Marquez Haynes (Southland, 2010) and third all-time. Hervey was named 1st team all-sun Belt Conference, while Erick Neal was named 2nd team all-sun Belt. Voting was determined by league coaches. Hervey was named to the USBWA all-district VII Team. He is the second-ever Maverick to earn the recognition - LaMarcus Reed, Head Coach Scott Cross was named the Joe Gottfried Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year. He earned Southland COY honors in 2012 and is only the second UTA coach to earn the honor (Bob Snake LeGrand, Southland, 1981). Cross earned his 200th career victory against Troy. He enters the NIT with a record - the most wins and highest winning percentage in program history. UTA won its program-high 25th game of the season at ULM. This season marks the first time in program history the Mavs surpassed 20 wins in consecutive seasons. The team s 25 wins is the highest total in program history - the 2012 and 2016 teams won 24 games each. Prior to its Jan. 7 setback at Texas State, the Mavs owned one of the longest win streaks in the country. After dropping 3 straight road games in 5 days early in the season (despite holding double-digit leads and a 50% healthy Kevin Hervey), UTA won 11-straight, which included 6 road wins and 5 in College Park Center. The streak included wins at Texas and then No. 12-ranked Saint Mary s. Currently sitting at No. 46 (3/13/17), UTA has owned an official NCAA RPI as high as 17 this season and went 1-3 against teams ranked in the top 100 nationally. All four of UTA s contests against top 100 teams were on the road. The Mavericks concluded its home schedule with a perfect 13-0 and have an active 15-game home win streak. UTA s last home loss was on Feb. 20, 2016 against ULM (61-64). UTA s win at No. 12 Saint Mary s was the program s first-ever against a team ranked among the Associated Press top 25. The Mavericks were 0-for-28 prior to the win, dating back to the school s first season in Division I UTA s win at Texas was the Mavericks first in the series history between the two teams. Texas had won the previous 11 - all in Austin. UTA won its first road game of the year on Nov. 26 at Fordham. The win snapped the Rams 18-game non-conference home win streak. UTA played 9 of its 13 non-conference games against teams from 8 different athletic conferences. The combined travel distance for the team s 9 road trips totaled 13,021 miles, according to Google maps. Last fall, senior forward Jorge Bilbao was featured as one of 10 influential Hispanic student leaders at UTA by the student newspaper The Shorthorn. The Bilbao, Spain native is a double major in international business and marketing. Junior point guard Erick Neal s twin brother, Derrick, plays cornerback for the University of Kansas football team. Derrick was born 14 minutes before Erick. The duo committed to play basketball at UTA, but Derrick changed his mind and decided to play football. As a backcourt pair in on the AAU circuit, the brothers were nicknamed Backcourt Problem because they were so difficult to defend. On the football field, Erick played quarterback. Freshman forward Erkam Kiris expected to play for his native Turkey in the U18 European Championships last summer in Istanbul. However, political unrest in the country, which included a failed coup attempt, postponed the championships and caused some concern that Kiris might not be able to leave the country to attend college. After an exhaustive effort, he finally was able to travel to Arlington. Despite missing the team s summer workouts, he played catch-up and used the preseason to acclimate to the program s culture and transition to the pace of college. For more, visit UTAMavs.com. The arena features 4,055 lower bowl seats, in addition to a 2,800-square-foot hospitality suite. A distinctive feature is a center hung 4-sided Daktronics LED scoreboard with an additional end zone LED display, ribbon displays and scorer s table. The lower concourse contains sports medicine facilities, two full-sized practice courts, a 2,500-sq-ft weight room, a press center, an academic support study center and coaches office suites.
