2 P A G E 2 GENERALS ATHLETIC NEWS Jeff Walen, Athletic Director Our winter teams are off and running to a much improved season. Our Girls Basketball program has already won as many games this year as they have the past 2 seasons combined. Our Boys Basketball program has played exceptionally well all year and are looking poised to make a good run in the playoffs. Our Cheerleaders have been working very hard getting ready for their competition on Saturday, February 1st at CCBC Dundalk at 9am. Our Indoor Track team has recorded some new school records and our wrestling team has been very exciting to watch this season. Playoffs will begin soon. Stay tuned to for all playoff brackets and schedules. Remember we are part of the MPSSAA 3A North Division for all playoff brackets. 3 P A G E 3 Athletic News Continued From Page 2 Allied Bowling (Coach Lindsay Dugovich): The Allied Bowling team has done a tremendous job this season with matches against Perry Hall, Loch Raven, and Lansdowne. The team has improved their team average by 12 pins already this season, with individual averages steadily improving. The team will compete in the County Championships on February 13 th. Wish the Generals good luck and come out and support them! Boys JV Basketball (Coach Bradley Eastham 95): The Boys JV Basketball Team has gotten off to their best start in 6 years. With a record of 4-3, the Boys JV Basketball Team has an opportunity to achieve the goal of finishing the season with a winning record. One of the early highlights of the first part of the season was beating Herford during our home opener on the night that we honored the men who played on the only state championship team in THS Boys Varsity Basketball history. Also, we were able to defeat a neighborhood rival in Loch Raven. This was something we have not been able to do in recent years. So far this season, A. Carter has lead the JV Generals in scoring in each game. Co-captain J. Langer is the backbone of the team by playing stellar defense and leading the team in rebounds. Langer is the second leading scorer of the team and helps facilitate the offense by communicating well. Second year players K. Dixon, J. Jahries, and co-captain M. Shaw have all made positive contributions to the success of this season as well. With the second half of the season approaching, the JV Generals have their work cut out for them with some tough games ahead on the schedule. Our last home games of the season are on Wednesday, Feb. 5 th vs. Woodlawn and Fri. Feb. 7 th vs. Franklin. Please come out and help support your Boys JV Basketball Generals on to victory during this already memorable season. Boys Varsity Basketball (Coach Tim Gavin): The boys basketball team just capped off their sixth win of the season beating Catonsville in stunning fashion. The Generals have won their games this season in a variety of different ways: hot shooting, defense and team play. The most important thing is that they are coming together as a team. With only three returning players from last season and 10 fresh faces now on varsity, this could have been the biggest obstacle that we have had to face. This year s team looks to be hitting its peak at the right part of the season. Lead by their tri-captains, N. Cater, C. Hogan, and K. Hill, this team is looking to surpass last season s win total and do some damage in the playoffs. We would like to thank the students, faculty and the community for supporting us this season and with just a few home games left on the schedule we are looking to have a strong finish and seeing everyone there with us. Girls JV Basketball (Coach Jayme Miller): The Girls JV Basketball team has had a great season thus far with a record of 7-3. We have many new players this year but the chemistry of the team on and off the court speaks beyond their JV level. The girls have done a wonderful job coming together and playing as a team at a high performance level. We are very excited to see the outcome of the rest of the season. There are several home games left in February so please come out and support the Towson Generals Girls basketball program!!! Girls Varsity Basketball (Coach Rebecca Moyer): The Girls Varsity Basketball team has had an exciting season so far! Not only did the girls double their win record from last year, 6-5, but they are playing better together as a team. The chemistry between the girls is evident on and off the court. The team has beaten Carver, Pikesville, Lansdowne, Dundalk, Patapsco, and Parkville. The best game they have had all season was against Lansdowne at home. The game was tied the entire time and not once did the girls let up. They played hard with strong defense while executing back door cuts on offense. So far, S. Fragetta has been leading the team on the scoring end, averaging 10 points a game. Others who contribute offensively include N. Guy-Thomas, and E. German. On the defensive end, J. Gans, S. Chodkowski, M. Schneidereith, M. Tribbe, and A. Ptak lead in defensive rebounds and steals. Come out and support your Lady Generals on February 14 th at 7pm against Overlea! Athletic News Continued On Page 4

4 P A G E 4 Senior News This year s Senior Talent Show will be held the evening of February 27 in the auditorium. Auditions for the talent show will be held at the end of this month. Listen to the morning announcements and look for future articles in the newsletter for more details. How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these. George Washington Carver Athletic News Continued From Page 3 Cheerleading (Coach Sarah Fast): The Varsity Cheerleading Team has enjoyed coming out to basketball games and wrestling matches this season and supporting all of our Generals with spirit. We are just days away from competing at the Baltimore County Competition on February 1 st. We have been working hard every day to perform the best routine possible, and represent Towson High School with pride and excellence. Boys and Girls Indoor Track Teams (Coaches Ed Faya & Gil Stange): From the Baltimore County Varsity Indoor Track & Field Championships: H. Prem, tied for 3 rd place, Girls High Jump; H. Voelker, 5 th place, Girls 3200m; V. Parts, 5 th place, Boys 3200m. JV Wrestling (Coach Jamie Biddison) The JV Wrestling team might be small in numbers this year but they have already demonstrated the ability to succeed. The team defeated Randallstown, Dulaney and Spalding at a JV tournament at Randallstown and are led by some strong sophomore leadership in Captain B. Gordon (14-3 record, 3rd at the JV Lansdowne Tournament). The team competes in their end of year County Tournament on February 8 at Hereford HS beginning at 9am and looks to place several wrestlers in the top 6 in their weight class. The team is mentally tough and physically well-conditioned and they are always exciting to watch. Varsity Wrestling (Coaches Phil Simmonds & Anthony Conty): Under the strong leadership of Senior Captain D. Pittas, the Generals continue to march forward on a tough journey this season. Posting a 4-8 team record, the team continues to learn from their losses and have shown continued improvement in their conditioning, technique, confidence, and toughness. At the Franklin Tournament D. Pittas placed 3 rd and N. Regalbuto placed 5 th among very tough competition. Several young hopefuls are also showing significant signs of improvement that will form the core of next year s team. Some of the individual records are D. Pittas (16-2), co-captain and senior C. Jones (8-3), N. Regalbuto(14-5), S. Mason ( 8-9 ), and co-captain D. Cockerille ( 9-8 ). We are looking forward to a strong finish of the regular season and a good showing in the county, regional, and state tournaments.

"It was a successful night at Towson High School for the varsity wrestling team this evening, defeating New Town by a final score of On a night when Towson was honoring its seniors, it seems too perfect that our Athlete of the Day is the senior captain of team, D. Pittas. Pittas, who wrestles in the 138 weight class, defeated his opponent tonight via injury forfeit. Congratulations to all our wrestlers on their impressive win!!
