And when Cindy Timchal was chosen to take the reins of the fledgling program, there was no doubt Gladchuk had accomplished his goal. Timchal was named the Midshipmen's first women's lacrosse coach on August 5, 2006, and in short order, has laid the foundation for a Navy program that is moving quickly in its quest to become a NCAA Division I power. During its inaugural Division I campaign in 2008, all she did was lead Navy on a historic run which saw the Mids set an NCAA record for wins by a first-year program with 13 and earn their first Patriot League Tournament appearance. When all was said and done, Timchal and an underclassmen-laden Navy squad, wrapped up the season at 13-4, including an 11-0 mark on its home turf, and as the owners of the second-ranked scoring offense in the nation. Her on-the-field impact was undeniable, as Navy produced a league-record 283 goals, scoring at the second-highest clip in NCAA history (16.65 goals per game). With its second fully-recruited class in the fold, Timchal again guided Navy to a 13-win season in The Mids produced four league all-stars, led by first-team selections Erin Rawlick and Caitlin Mandrin Hill, and advanced to the program's first-ever Patriot League Championship Game after a memorable semifinal win over second-seeded Lehigh. While the unprecedented early success certainly has turned heads within the lacrosse community, Navy's rise has come as no surprise to those in Annapolis. In 2007, Timchal provided a glimpse into the bright future that lie ahead for Midshipmen women's lacrosse by leading the Academy's club squad to an 18-5 mark, including its first win over a DI opponent and a runner-up finish at the USL/WDIA National Tournament. Timchal arrived at Navy as the most-accomplished coach in the sport's history. Her eight national titles are the fourth most by a coach in a women's sport in NCAA history, and the 25th most in all sports, men and women combined. Beyond the numbers, though, Timchal has done her part to revolutionize the sport of women's lacrosse. In recent years while at Maryland, Timchal brought some of the most influential names in the sport through College Park, including former assistant and lacrosse legend Gary Gait, and more recently former Terrapin stars Cathy Nelson and Jen Adams. In addition, former Maryland players have become a fixture on national teams and within the collegiate coaching ranks, demonstrating the breadth of Timchal's influence. In 1996, she introduced a new wrinkle to her vast coaching repertoire as she brought aboard the wisdom of California-based spiritual advisor and renowned author Dr. Jerry Lynch to enrich the minds of her student-athletes. That decision complemented the already high level of physical conditioning it takes to excel at the Division I level and has since become a widespread trend used throughout the world of sports. From Kelly Amonte to Cathy Nelson, Alex Kahoe to Alexis Venechanos, Jen Adams to Kelly Coppedge, the one constant amongst all of the great Maryland players has been Cindy Timchal. In just five of her 16 seasons at College Park did Timchal lose more than three games in any one season, highlighted by spectacular undefeated runs in 1996 (19-0), 1999 (21-0) and 2001 (23-0). She took Terrapin teams to the NCAA finals in 11 seasons, including an unprecedented stretch of seven straight national championships - currently the thirdlongest championship streak in women's NCAA history. In addition, the run puts Timchal in the company of coaching legends like UCLA's John Wooden who won seven straight titles with the men's basketball program from Timchal's coaching career got its start at Northwestern in During her nine-year tenure with the Wildcats, she compiled a record (.655) while leading the program to five NCAA appearances. While at Northwestern, Timchal made it as far as the quarterfinals, earning appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 1983, '84, '86, '87, and '88. In 1991, she made the move to College Park to revive and renew the strong tradition of Terrapin lacrosse. Prior to her arrival at the storied program, its last title had come in 1986, but almost immediately the Terrapins restored their reign atop the sport. Timchal's first year saw a 14-3 mark and a trip to the NCAA finals. By 1992, the lacrosse world sensed something special was to come at Maryland. Despite being at a place with a rich history in lacrosse, few could have predicted that a dynasty so powerful was on the horizon. With a 14-1 record, the Terrapins took the 1992 national title -- just the third in school history. The 1993 season would bring a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to the Princeton Tigers in the NCAA semifinals. The following year led to further frustration with the Tigers, as a 10-7 decision left Timchal's squad just one win away from hoisting the trophy yet again. In 1995, however, Timchal and the Terps would turn the tables on the competition. After the three-goal loss to Princeton in 1994 finals, the 2

3 Terps would go on to win 50 straight games. Timchal led the 1995 squad to a 17-0 run ending in a 13-5 defeat of Princeton for the NCAA title. Maryland would go undefeated again in 1996, finishing with a 19-0 record and a 10-5 decision over ACC rival Virginia to take home the hardware. Wearing the label of back-to-back NCAA champions, Timchal's squad maintained its dominance, posting a 21-1 record and falling just one goal short of putting together its third consecutive undefeated season. The dynasty continued through the '98 season despite a pair of road ACC losses to begin the year. That season would end the same way as the previous three, however, with Timchal's Terrapins being crowned the NCAA champions once again, this time behind an 11-5 win over Virginia. In 1999, from top-to-bottom, Timchal's crew personified excellence, as they produced yet another undefeated season at 21-0 and the program's fifth-straight national title. The 2000 season saw the Terps stumble out of the gate with an overtime loss at North Carolina, but the "machine" could not be stopped as Maryland went on to win its final 20 en route to its sixth title in a row. The 2001 season once again saw Maryland run through its schedule without a blemish as the Terps outlasted Georgetown in a gut-wrenching double-overtime thriller in the title game to finish The 23 wins still stand as the most ever by a team in a single season. Individually, her athletes have earned countless accolades and awards. Maryland had 21 first team All-Americans in her last nine years, and 13 players took home national offensive, defensive or goalkeeper of the year awards. Jen Adams became the first-ever winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy, which recognizes the top collegiate men's and women's player in the country, and Kelly Coppedge was a finalist in 2004 and In 1996, Kelly Amonte became the Terps' first four-time All-American, including first-team honors in 1995 and A total of 42 different Terrapins have earned All- America recognition 77 times under Timchal including Kelly Amonte's four, ( ), and three each for Betsy Elder ( ), Sarah Forbes ( ), Laura Harmon ( ), Sascha Newmarch ( ), Jen Adams ( ) and Kelly Coppedge ( ). In 2005, Acacia Walker earned first team honors, Greta Sommers was named to the second team and Annie Collines was named third team All-America. Adams' third-consecutive selection as Player of the Year in 2000 marked the 10th time one of Timchal's players had earned National Player of the Year honors, including Amonte, who was named Division I s Most Valuable Player in Nationally, 18 of Timchal's players have played on the U.S. Developmental team and five were members of the most recent championship U.S. World Cup team. Seven former Terrapins helped lead Australia to the 2005 World Cup title in Annapolis, including tournament MVP Sarah Forbes. All totaled, 13 Terps represented three countries at the World Cup. Since her first days in coaching at Northwestern, Timchal's focus has always been on the experience. And as impressive as her on-field success has been, her greatest accomplishments have come off of it. Throughout her career, her athletes have set the bar within the classroom as seven athletes have garnered a total of nine Academic All-America accolades. Her dedication to her players has inspired a remarkable number of them to follow her into the coaching ranks. This spring, more than 20 of her former Maryland players will patrol the sidelines on coaching staffs across the country, including Kelly Amonte-Hiller (fourtime reigning NCAA champion Northwestern head coach), Jen Adams (Loyola head coach), Kerstin Kimel (Duke head coach) and Karen McCrate (head coach of 2001 NCAA D-II Champion C.W. Post). Timchal's coaching tree also extends outside the sport and into field hockey, where former player Jennifer Averill has won three national titles at Wake Forest. She also served as a mentor to current Dartmouth head coach Amy Patton at Unionville High School. Timchal, a graduate of Haverford High, lettered in lacrosse, tennis and track & field at West Chester (Pa.) University before beginning a now legendary career coaching at Unionville High School, where she coached field hockey, lacrosse and basketball. In 1979, she joined the collegiate ranks, becoming an assistant lacrosse and field hockey coach at the University of Pennsylvania. In February 2004, she was inducted into the school's hall of fame. This past spring, Timchal was one of fourteen individuals inducted into the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. 4 Allison Fondale Associate Head Coach Loyola (Md.) 97 Third Year at Navy Allison Fondale enters her third season with the women's lacrosse program in Fondale brings a wealth of experience to the Midshipmen sidelines with previous coaching stints at three different universities, including ACC powers Duke and Maryland, and as a two-time All-American during her playing career at Loyola College. At Navy, Fondale serves as recruiting coordinator and primary coach for the defense and goalkeepers. In 2008, she played an instrumental role in guiding one of the youngest teams in the country to a historic first season. A record-setting spring saw the Mids produce an NCAA record for wins by a first-year program with 13 and earn their first appearance in the Patriot League Tournament appearance. Last spring, Fondale helped lead Navy to a second-consecutive 13-win season and a trip to the Patriot League Final for the first time in program history. Thanks much in part to the nation's seventh-ranked scoring defense, led by all-league selections Caitlin Mandrin Hill and Elaina Ponchione, the Mids held 10 opponents to eight or fewer goals, while producing 10 or more caused turnovers seven times. Prior to arriving in Annapolis, Fondale served as the head coach at Ohio University for the previous year and a half before the university decided to drop the program, along with three other sports in January of While at Ohio, Fondale guided the Bobcats to a 4-12 mark in 2006 and had two players earn all-conference honors and another named the ALC Goalie of the Year. Fondale took over at Ohio after serving as an assistant under Timchal in While at Maryland, she served as the primary recruiter while working extensively with the offense and goalies. Maryland achieved a national ranking of seventh and landed three players on the IWLCA All-America team in In addition, three players were members of the U.S. Development Team and one was a World Cup team alternate. Prior to College Park, Fondale spent six years at Duke, first as an assistant and then associate head coach. There, she helped build the Blue Devils into an elite program, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in all six seasons, including three-straight quarterfinal appearances and a trip to the national semis in She coached 12 players to IWLCA All-America recognition, while 19 garnered All-ACC laurels. In addition, five of her recruiting classes were ranked among the top seven nationally, including the 2004 class, which ranked No. 1 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. Fondale coached and recruited two-time All-American Kristen Waagbo to Duke as part of its '03 class, which included four members off the USA Under-19 team and was tabbed second in the country. Fondale has strived for success in the classroom at each of her previous coaching stops, making it fitting she would land at one of the nation's finest academic institutions. She has served as the academic advisor to all of her teams. In 2006, her Ohio team was recognized as a "Merit Squad" for having a team GPA over 3.00 while two seniors were named to the IWLCA Honor Roll. While at Duke in 2004, the Blue Devils won the IWLCA Merit Award for leading all NCAA Division I schools with a 3.40 team GPA. A two-time IWLCA All-American at Loyola, Fondale led the Greyhounds to three NCAA national semifinal appearances and a spot in the 1997 championship game. In 1994, her squad earned the No. 1 ranking and won a school-record 16 games. She finished her career with 120 points (71 g, 49 a). In 2008, she was one of 10 women and men inducted to the 2008 class for the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. A native of Fulton, Md., the former Allison Valentino earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in clinical psychology from Loyola. Allison and her husband, Joe, reside in Annapolis. FONDALE COPPEDGE Kelly Coppedge Assistant Coach Maryland 04 Third Year at Navy A three-time All-American during her standout Maryland career under head coach Cindy Timchal, Kelly Coppedge enters her third year as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy in Coppedge's background as a dynamic offensive talent has been a key element in Navy's unprecedented success in its first two seasons as a fullfledged Division I program. The Midshipmen concluded their inaugural spring as the owners of the second-ranked scoring offense in the nation. In addition to setting a Patriot League record with 283 goals scored, Navy scored at an unrivaled pace, finishing with the second-highest clip (16.65 goals/gm) in NCAA history. In 2009, Navy boasted a balanced offensive attack featuring a total six 20-goal scorers, led by two-time First-Team All-Patriot League attacker Erin Rawlick. Rawlick led the conference in scoring for the second year in a row with 92 points - the third most in the 19-year history of Patriot League women's lacrosse. As a player, Coppedge graduated in 2004 as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the storied history of women's lacrosse at Maryland. During her career, she accumulated 300 points (219 g, 81 a) to rank third on Maryland's all-time scoring list. Her 219 goals rank second behind only all-time great Jen Adams, while her 81 assists stands seventh all-time. As a senior team captain, she scored 72 goals and had 26 assists for 98 points to rank sixth on the single-season list. During her senior year, she was named a candidate for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the nation's top player, and was also named a first-team All-American by the three major lacrosse outlets, as well as WomensLacrosse.com's 2003 Midfielder of the Year. As a junior, Coppedge registered 95 points (73 g, 22 a), the seventh-most on the Maryland single-season list, on her way to ACC Player of the Year and NCAA Midfielder of the Year honors from Brine/IWLCA, as well as All-America kudos for the second time in her career. Her 73 goals were the third-highest total in a single season. She finished her career as a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist, a 2004 Honda Award Finalist, a three-time All-American and first-team All-ACC midfielder. During her four-year career, the Coppedge-led Terrapins produced a overall mark and twice reached the national semifinals, highlighted by a 2001 title run during her freshman season. An Annapolis native, she graduated from Maryland in 2004 from the Robert H. Smith Business School with a degree in marketing. She previously worked as sales representative for Harrow Sports in San Diego, before moving back east and assuming her current post at the Academy. While this spring marks her third season with the Midshipmen, Coppedge certainly is no stranger to the Yard. Both her grandfathers, John (Bo) Coppedge and James L. Anderson, are Naval Academy graduates and members of the Class of '47. After retiring from active duty, Bo went on to serve as the distinguished athletic director at the Naval Academy from

5 Elizabeth Schaffner Director of Operations Loyola (Md.) 98 Second Year at Navy Elizabeth Schaffner, a 1998 graduate of Loyola College, begins her second season as Navy's Director of Lacrosse Operations. Schaffner came to the Academy after serving 10 seasons as an assistant at George Mason. Her responsibilities with the Midshipmen program include assisting with travel, facilities scheduling, camps and clinics, other administrative duties including budget and compliance issues. After spending a decade with the Patriots' program, Schaffner's influence was undeniable, particularly on the defensive end where she once starred during her playing career at Loyola. While at George Mason, the Patriots fielded teams that finished among the nation's leaders in scoring defense, ground balls and who consistently made appearances among the NCAA leaders in caused turnovers. Schaffner played an instrumental role in mentoring a pair of All-Americans in defender Kinsley O'Garrow and goalkeeper Meg Dentler, a two-time awardee. Schaffner also helped develop a number of first-team All-CAA defenders, including three student-athletes who went on to earn conference player-of-the-year accolades. Complimenting her considerable sideline experience, Schaffner along with current Stanford head coach Amy Bokker, co-founded the SuperNoVA Select Lacrosse Club in 2003, a formidable club program in Northern Virginia. As the program's co-director, and now as the president, Schaffner has seen or coached many of the top players from across the region. Schaffner's arrival reunites a pair of former Loyola teammates on the Midshipmen sidelines as both her and associate head coach Allison Valentino played together for three successful seasons with the Greyhounds. As teammates, the duo made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by a run to the national championship game in The following year Schaffner played in her third national tournament, helping a Loyola team, which boasted the country's top-ranked defense to a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals. A native of Annapolis, Schaffner was an All-American lacrosse player at St. Mary's High School. She received her bachelor's in elementary education from Loyola and earned her master's degree in higher education from George Mason in May of Women s Lacrosse Support Staff Jordan Trautman Volunteer Assistant Coach Georgetown 09 First Year at Navy Jordan Trautman, a former Georgetown All- American and 2009 graduate is the newest member of the Navy women's lacrosse staff, serving in her first season as a volunteer assistant coach. "We are extremely excited to have Jordan joining our staff," said Cindy Timchal. "She had a terrific playing career and will be an asset across all aspects of our program at the Naval Academy." A four-year starter while at Georgetown, Trautman earned 2008 Second Team All- America laurels as a defender, was a two-time All-Region honoree as well as a twotime All-Big East selection. She also served as a co-captain for the 2009 Hoyas squad. During her decorated four-year playing career, Trautman helped lead Georgetown to three NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big East Championships and an overall mark of (.662). Complementing her athletic background, the Mystic, Conn. native also brings experience coaching at the club level. She coached and served as an assistant program director for the Northern Virginia-based Cardinal Lacrosse Club from and now currently serves as head coach and Director of Girls Programs for the D.C.-based Breakout Lacrosse training company. 6 2010 Season Outlook Preseason Notebook With its third fully-recruited class in the fold, Navy sets its sight on first league crown in 2010 Upstart Navy Determined to Build Upon Successful Beginnings Navy elevated to varsity status in the June of 2006, and has kicked off its Division I tenure in fine fashion, reeling off 26 wins and earning league tournament appearances in each of its first two seasons. A year after setting the NCAA record for most wins by a first-year program, the Mids produced an impressive 13-5 mark in Riding an attack that featured six 20-plus goal scorers and boasting the nation's seventhranked scoring defense, Navy continued to make strides, winning its first postseason contest and advancing to the Patriot League Championship. With two-time defending league scoring champion Erin Rawlick leading the way, optimism is high for a Navy team in 2010 that returns 10 starters, four all-conference performers (Rawlick, Caitlin Mandrin Hill, Katrina Nietsch and Elaina Ponchione) and nearly all of its scoring from last spring (top-nine scorers are back). Navy has further positioned itself for a strong run at its first conference crown and NCAA berth with the addition of 16 talented freshmen and 19 newcomers. Coach Timchal Says: "To date, this is the best class I have had the privilege to recruit to the Academy. It's a large group that will bring lots of speed and really raise our overall level of athleticism. We're excited about bringing these young women here and believe they will play a major role in helping us take that next step as a program. Mids Tab Rawlick as 2010 Captain Senior attacker Erin Rawlick, a two-time First-Team All-Patriot League selection and the conference's leading scorer in each of the last two seasons, has been elected by her peers to serve as the Navy women's lacrosse team captain for the 2010 season. In the Academy's first two seasons of varsity competition, Rawlick, the third midshipman to serve as captain, has been the primary catalyst in the program's rapid ascent. The Forest Hill, Md. product has scored 122 goals and racked up a conference-best 183 points over the course of Navy's first 35 games. To put that into perspective, that's a sterling 5.23 points per game - the third-highest clip nationally over the last two seasons. Syracuse's Katie Rowan (6.35), a three-time First-Team IWLCA All-American, and Northwestern's Hannah Nielsen (5.68), a two-time Tewaaraton winner, are the only players to boast higher scoring averages. Last spring, Rawlick registered her second-straight season with 50 or more goals (55) and added a careerand league-best 37 assists. Her 92 points led all conference players and was the third-highest point total in the nearly two decade-long history of Patriot League women's lacrosse. On her way to earning First-Team All-Patriot League laurels for a second-straight year, Rawlick issued a number of dominant individual performances, including a pair of double-digit point outings. Of course, none were more memorable than her seven-point effort in the league semifinals that pushed the Mids past secondseeded Lehigh and into the conference championship. Rawlick s efforts were recognized this past summer when she was one of 64 players nationwide to advance in the final tryouts for the U.S. Women's Developmental Team. Rawlick was the second Navy player to reach the final round of tryouts since the program s inception. Over the Midshipmen's two-season tenure at the Division I level, Rawlick has scored a goal in all 35 games - the fifth-longest active streak headed into NCAA Division I Consecutive Games With a Goal Rk. She has been here since day one, starting every game for us since her club year as a freshman. She is our leader and someone the girls on the team look to for guidance both on and off the field. Erin truly embodies everything we look for in a student-athlete here at the Naval Academy." 6

7 Ponchione Emerges as one of Nation s Top Young Netminders In her first collegiate season manning the cage, Elaina Ponchione was rock-solid as Navy s last line of defense. One of just five league freshmen to earn allconference honors, Ponchione led the Patriot League and finished eighth nationally in goals-against average (8.78). She also paced all conference netminders in save percentage (.482) and was second in saves per game (8.0/gm). On the national scene, she ranked second among freshman goalies in both GAA, behind only New Hampshire's Kate Gunts (8.18), and victories with 13, behind only Maryland s Brittany Dipper s 21. Balanced Midshipmen Attack Bolstered with Improved Depth Led by the dynamic Erin Rawlick, the Navy offense brings back six 20-goal scorers and seven different players that recorded 25 or more points (three of which posted over 40 points). The emergence of Caitlin Mandrin Hill, who exploded for a career high 24 goals and 49 points a year ago and will see more time in the attack this spring, along with an influx of talented youngsters, points towards another strong year on the offensive end for Navy in The return of junior Katrina Nietsch, an explosive offensive talent, will also be a major boost for the Mids. Nietsch put together a second-straight all-star season in 09 with 26 goals (10 in conference play) and 36 points in 13 games, before a knee injury prematurely ended her spring. Look for the continued growth of Navy sophomores Danielle Vivonetto, Madison Bell and Kierstin King. As freshmen, each player made an immediate impact in the Mids lineup. A formidable finisher, Vivonetto led Navy and ranked third in the Patriot League with 31 goals in just 16 games. Both Bell and King, meanwhile, established themselves as two-way contributors, ranking among the team s leaders in ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers, in addition to scoring. In addition to supplying some much-welcomed depth, the Class of 2013 is expected to pay immediate dividends, significantly increasing the team s speed and athleticism on the field for Navy this spring. The incoming class consists of players hailing from five different states, including eight Maryland natives. The group also features a pair of recruits from the lacrosse hotbed of Long Island, twin sisters (Beth and Kathy Young) from Pennsylvania, as well as Dani Wiedmeier, the younger sister of Navy senior defender Tori Wiedmeier. Coming off decorated high school careers, expect the Young sisters, as well as Sayville, N.Y. native, Jasmine Depompeo to factor largely in the Midshipmen s plans. Timchal Atop All-Time Wins List Navy s Cindy Timchal enters 2010 tied atop the NCAA s all-time wins list with William & Smith s Hall of Famer Pat Genovese. Entering the spring, Timchal's career record stands at , good for the best winning percentage for any Division I coach with at least 10 years of experience. NCAA Women s Lacrosse All-Time Win Leaders Rk. Coach (Current School) Year Wins Pct. 1. Cindy Timchal (Navy) 28th Pat Genovese (William Smith) 37th Sharon Pfluger (TCNJ) 24th Missy Foote (Middlebury) 28th Chris Sailer (Princeton) 23rd Leadership Aplenty Great leaders have long been synonymous with Annapolis, and that, of course, is just the case on this year s Navy team. While the number of underclassmen (26) on this year s roster is nearly double that of Navy s upperclassmen (eight juniors and seven seniors), the Class of 2010 will represent the Midshipmen s most experienced group to take the field yet. The young Navy program has grown trememendously since its transitional club season in Six members of this year s seven-member senior class are holdovers from that squad and have been there from the beginning, experiencing the ebbs and flows of the Midshipmen s first forays in collegiate women s lacrosse: Brittany Amerau, Maggie Morton Erin Rawlick, Mary Ruttum, Megan Silk and Tori Wiedmeier. On and off the field, look for Navy senior Mary Ruttum as someone the Mids will count on to guide this underclassmen-laden squad. Ruttum enters the spring as the program's second-leading scorer with 97 career points (67 g, 30 a). A year ago, she not only produced a second-straight 30-goal season and was the team leader in ground balls (2.61/gm), but she was also the most accurate shot in the entire Patriot League, scoring on 61.2% of her shot attempts (30 goals on 49 shots). As a midshipman, Ruttum, a systems engineering major, ranks 70th in Overall Order of Merit among 1,064 midshipmen in the Class of Academically, she is also near the top of her class with a 3.71 grade-point average. She ranks 27th in Military Order of Merit and, furthermore, she has assumed a significant leadership role within the Brigade in her role as Seventh Company Commander, where she helps oversee the daily activities of her company-mates. For the second-straight year Navy will benefit from the services of a four-year soccer standout in senior Shelly Moeller. A year ago, it was Kristen Laraway and Jenn Dunbar who became important contributors on the the Midshipmen backline. Look for the battle-tested Moeller, a two-time league defensive player of the year and four-time soccer all-star, to add tremendous athleticism and toughness to Navy s defense. Mary Ruttum leads the Seventh Company onto the field prior to a Navy football game this fall. Navy to Play Challenging Schedule Twelve home dates, including a matchup with CAA stronghold William & Mary (March 10), and national power Duke (March 21) highlight a competitive 2010 slate. Navy plays its first five and eight of its first nine contests at home, beginning with the 2010 opener against Howard on February 6. The Mids won t hit the road for the first time until three weeks later, traveling to Davidson. The following weekend, Navy starts a threegame home stand against a Monmouth (March 5) team that has averaged 12 wins since Beginning with its conference opener at Lafayette on March 13, Navy alternates away and home games over its final eight regular-season contests. The Mids host Holy Cross on March 27 before encountering a strong litmus test on April 3 against two-time defending league champion Colgate in a rematch of the 2009 title game. Timchal hopes the dates with the Tribe and Blue Devils prepare the Mids for a season-ending stretch of five-straight league games. In 2009, William & Mary captured a second-straight CAA regular-season title and ranked 20th in the final IWLCA regular season poll. Meanwhile, Duke reached the Elite Eight last spring and finished the year ranked fifth nationally. Coach Timchal Says: "We're very excited about where we are at right now as a program. We have made tremendous strides in our first two seasons of varsity competition and I think this year's schedule is reflective of that growth. "William & Mary has a long and rich lacrosse history. It will be a real challenge for us, but we're very excited to bring an opponent of that caliber to Annapolis." Duke is consistently one of the top programs in the country. Heading to Durham will be an uphill battle, but we want our girls to be battle-tested and ready to go for another challenging Patriot League season." 7

8 2009 Season in Review Freshman Danielle Vivonetto made an immediate impact last spring, scoring a Navy freshman-best 31 goals Continuing to Make Strides With the additional depth provided by its second fullyrecruited class, year two saw the Mids put together another 13-win season in 2009 and, more importantly, saw Navy take the next step as a program in advancing to its first-ever Patriot League Championship game. Riding a well-balanced attack, led by the conference scoring leader in Erin Rawlick, and boasting the nation's seventh-ranked scoring defense, Navy went 4-2 in conference play for the second year in a row and earned a return trip to the Patriot League Tournament. Rawlick Again Spearheads Attack After emerging as one of the nation's most prolific scorers during Navy's historic inaugural season in 2008, junior Erin Rawlick was right back at it again last spring as one of three Patriot League players to repeat as a first-team conference all star. Rawlick led the Patriot League in scoring for the second-straight season with 55 goals and a career-high 37 assists for 92 points - the third-highest single-season total in league history, and the sixth-most nationally. She scored a goal in every game for the second year in a row, racked up double-figure points in two games and was once again the catalyst for one of the Patriot League's most efficient offensive units. Rawlick On the Charts Category Total NCAA PL Team Points 92 6th 1st 1st Points/Gm th 1st 1st Assists 37 13th 1st 1st Assists/Gm th 1st 1st DC/Gm th 1st 1st Stout Defense Sets the Tone While Navy's record-setting offense drew the headlines during its inaugural spring campaign, averaging goals/gm (the second-highest scoring clip in NCAA history), in 2009 it was the Midshipmen's defensive unit that came to the forefront. Navy allowed only 8.78 goals per contest, cutting nearly a full two goals from its 2008 average, and held 10 of their 16 regular-season foes to eight or fewer goals. The Mids gave up a conference-low 159 goals, while producing 10 or more caused turnovers seven times, highlighted by a school-record 16-spot they put up in an early-season win over Detroit Mercy. Honors Roll in for Several Mids Four members of the Navy women's lacrosse team picked up All-Patriot League honors, according to voting conducted by the conference's head coaches. Junior Erin Rawlick and sophomore Caitlin Mandrin Hill were both voted as first-team selections; Mandrin Hill earning the laurel for the first time in her career. Sophomore Katrina Nietsch and freshman Elaina Ponchione, meanwhile, joined the list of honorees as second-team all-stars. Navy players also combined for a league-best 11 Patriot League weekly awards during the 2009 season, with Lehigh being the next closest team producing eight certificates. Mandrin Hill set a new conference record by collecting defensive player of the week kudos in an unprecedented five weeks, breaking the previous mark of four set twice by Colgate's Hilary Meyer in 1998 & 99. Youth Movement In 2008, the Navy women's lacrosse program embarked upon an historic inaugural Division I season while fielding one of the youngest rosters in the nation. With a roster featuring 14 freshmen and a total of 23 underclassmen, Navy's recipe for success in 2009 was once again spurred on by a talented group of youngsters. Last spring, nearly half the members of the Mids' freshman class wound up becoming steady contributors in the team's regular rotation, with six different rookies (Madison Bell, Abby Ellis, Kierstin King, Laura Nevin, Elaina Ponchione and Danielle Vivonetto) earning nods in the starting-12. By the Numbers A look at Navy's final 2009 statistics shows just how much of an offensive impact its underclassmen had. Scoring Underclassmen Total Percent Goals Assists Points Road Reversal After losing each of the program's first three road games, the Midshipmen s struggles outside of Annapolis appeared to be behind them in After dropping its road opener at Longwood, Navy won five-straight games away from the friendly confines of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Staidum. The Mids boasted a perfect 3-0 record on the road in conference play and finished the year with a 6-2 mark away from home. Memorable Games from 2009 March 13 Navy 15, Canisius 13 Navy drew even at on an Erin Rawlick goal with just 1:57 remaining and then Caitlin Mandrin Hill, who produced a career-best seven points (2 g, 5 a), scored with 68 ticks left to break a tie to give the Mids their first of five road wins on the spring. March 21 Navy 10, Holy Cross 9 Danielle Vivonetto came off the bench to register her second career hat trick, including the game-winner on an eight-meter attempt with just 12 seconds to play, as Navy used a strong second-half effort to edge Holy Cross on its home field. The win gave the Mids a clean sweep of their season-long, three-game road jaunt with wins at Canisius and Niagara. April 1 Navy 8, American 6 Navy went to the nation's capital and rode a furious second-half surge to top American and end the Eagles playoff aspirations. Katrina Nietsch erupted for three goals in a 3:10 span midway through the second half as Navy pulled out yet another nailbiter on the road. April 4 Navy 13, Davidson 6 Navy got off to a fast start in its win over the visiting Wildcats. In fact, Danielle Vivonetto s goal just seven seconds into the contest set a new NCAA record for the fastest goal to start a game (previous record: 8, 3x) April 18 Navy 8, Bucknell 7 Trailing 5-1 after the opening 25 minutes, Navy reeled off six unanswered goals and held the hosts scoreless for a 28:08 stretch spanning both halves on its way to clinching its second Patriot League Tournament berth in as many seasons. Elaina Ponchione made nine saves, including a memorable stop on an eight-meter attempt with three seconds left to preserve the win. April 24 Navy 12, Lehigh 11 (PL Semifinals) Erin Rawlick issued a dominating three-goal, four-assist effort that helped the third-seeded Mids avenge a regular-season home loss to the Mountain Hawks and advance to their first-ever Patriot League Final. Rawlick came one point shy of equaling a Patriot League Tournament record with seven points, to go along with five draw controls. 8

30 The academy's facilities are outstanding and Annapolis is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country." US Lacrosse President and CEO Steve Stenersen Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium has emerged as the premier college lacrosse venue in the country and the home to Navy s men s and women s lacrosse programs. Though the three million-dollar facility opened its doors on Sept. 26, 1959, when Navy christened the stadium with a 29-2 win on the gridiron against William & Mary, the Navy lacrosse program would not play its first contest at the stadium until April 29, All-American George Tracy and attackman Patrick Fitzpatrick scored two goals apiece to lead the Midshipmen to a 9-7 victory over rival Maryland in Navy s debut at the two-year-old facility. This spring marks the 49th season in which at least one Navy lacrosse game has been played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Having played a game a year at the stadium for 42 consecutive years, the Midshipmen stepped away from the hallowed ground in 2003 as the stadium underwent a 40 million-dollar face-lift. When Navy returned to the field in 2004, the Midshipmen called the state-of-the-art multi-use facility their home for all home lacrosse games, and this past spring the women joined their male counterparts in playing its contests there as well. The support the lacrosse teams at Navy receive is second to none. Traditionally, the men s team is one of the top-drawing teams in all of college lacrosse, boasting six of the top-15 largest attended regular-season games of alltime. Now, with another team occupying the playing surface at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolis truly becomes the center of the lacrosse world. In 2008, the Navy women were quick to establish a definite home-field advantage. In their first Division I contest, the Mids set the tone for the spring with a convincing win over Longwood. Navy went on to post an 11-0 record at home, outscoring its competitors by a combined 104 goals (9.5 per game). 31 Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Renovation Project 2010 NAVY WOMEN S LACROSSE Privately funded by the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA), the 40 million-dollar Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium renovation project was completed in the fall of One of the most significant changes to the stadium came with the installation of a new synthetic field surface, FieldTurf, which allows the stadium to be used 365 days a year. The multi-purpose nature of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium has allowed it to host a myriad of events, including the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Quarterfinals, the 2005 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship and the 2005 Women's Lacrosse World Cup. In the summer of 2009, the Academy began a three-year stint as the hosts of the Major League Lacrosse Championships. New components have included: two state-of-the-art video scoreboards, chair back seating, ADA seating platforms and access ramps, concession stands, end zone seating, luxury suites, additional sideline seating created by lowered the playing field to give the stadium a more intimate look and feel. In 2004, a 12,000-square-foot, twostory banquet facility was constructed to host class reunion dinners and other Naval Academy functions. Located on the first floor, the N-Room houses plaques listing the names of USNA varsity letter winners and can seat 600 for a banquet or formal dinner. The banquet rooms are serviced by a full kitchen and bar areas with a fully-integrated audio and video system that features 10 large screen televisions and the ability to give business presentations on both levels of the banquet facility. A completely renovated press tower was also unveiled prior to the 2004 season. The top level features booths for television play-by-play and coaches' video, along with tower suites. The fifth level is dedicated to the print media, while also housing Wesley A. Brown Field House Named after Lt. Cmdr. Wesley A. Brown, USN (ret.), the first African American midshipman to graduate from the USNA (in 1949), the 140,000 square foot multi-function facility serves as the on-campus home for the women s lacrosse program. Built facing the scenic Severn River, the Wesley A. Brown Field House includes three regulation sized basketball courts, a 200-meter indoor track with banked curves and a retractable synthetic turf surface that allows the lacrosse team to practice indoors. State-of-the-art weight training and sports medicine facilities, as well as class and meeting rooms give the Midshipmen a place to relax, study, lift and watch film in and out of the lacrosse season. The world-class facility also houses the women s lacrosse main locker room. The program s main locker room area consists of a 360-square foot with large hardwood lockers for each player, with a 375-square foot team area and a 150-square foot equipment and athletic training room located on either end of the main locker room and access to meeting rooms. radio and coaches' booths, along with scoreboard, public address and operations areas. A newly-constructed level, named the Flag Bridge, was erected under the old press area in the seating bowl. It has 71 permanent seats in front of additional stools, tables and chairs which allow for flexibility in hosting on game day or special events. Located on the second floor of the press tower is the newly-opened Bilderback- Moore Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Visitors and fans alike have the opportunity to learn of the Mids overwhelming accomplishments over the last 100 years, as well as the heroics played out both on and off the field. The Bilderback-Moore Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame is divided into three rooms on the second floor of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium the Hall of Heroes and Champions, made possible by a leadership gift from Ed Gibbons, Class of 59; the Hall of Players and Coaches, made possible by a leadership gift from Charlie Guy, Class of 46; and the Hall of Championships, the focal point of the exhibit, which includes the James H.H. Carrington Room, made possible by a leadership gift from Nancy and Steve Crown. While the renovations made possible the necessary upgrades for the football and lacrosse programs, the memorial aspects of the original structure were preserved and enhanced during the renovations. Battle arches and class arches have been constructed to tell the illustrious story of the Naval Services. Each combination of battle arches contains a history lesson on the left arch and a description of the particular battle on the right. Each and every battle fought by either the Navy or Marine Corps is depicted through the use of color-coded battle streamers allowing visitors to chronologically view the story of the brave men and women who we honor for their service to our country. 32 NAVY NAVY WOMEN S SPORT LACROSSE In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. Navy s Lizzie Barnes was one of six Division I women's soccer players to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was the third-straight and fifth Navy recipient of the Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Navy s Erica Ziel became the fourth female student-athlete to earn the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete award in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field in the same academic year. Navy junior Adam Meyer received All-America honors by finishing in fifth place in the consolation final at the 2009 NCAA Men s Swimming and Diving Championship. Erik Hunter and Jonathan Galinski also represented Navy at the event. Navy juniors Thuy-Mi Dinh and Tara Chapmon competed at the NCAA Women s Swimming and Diving Championship. 35 2009 NAVY SPORT ANCHORS AWEIGH Anchors Aweigh was written by Lt. Charles Zimmerman, musical director of the Naval Academy, in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles 06 as a fight song for the y 1907 Traditions graduating class. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game and when the Mids won, the song became traditional at the contest. ager Stand Navy down the field, Sails set to the sky, We ll never change our course, So Army you steer shy. Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh, Sail Navy down the field, And sink the Army, sink the Army Grey BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat as the mascot for Navy teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (the Chief) was presented to the Brigade by officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 win over Army that year and a goat became the permanent mascot of the Academy in BLUE & GOLD The USNA alma mater was written in 1923 by Cmdr. Roy DeS. Horn, USN (Ret.) with music composed by J.W. Crosley. Following every home athletic competition, the athletes face their fans with their hands on their hearts and sing the following words: Now, colleges from sea to sea May sing of colors true; But who has better right than we To hoist a symbol hue? For sailors brave in battle fair, Since fighting days of old, Have proved the sailor s right to wear The Navy Blue and Gold 35

36 A Summer to Remember for Navy Lacrosse For Midshipmen, often some of the best preparation for being commissioned as an officer come hundreds or even thousands of miles outside of Annapolis. And that was just the case for several student-athletes on the Navy women's lacrosse team this past summer. Below these soon-to-be officers discuss some of the unique, real-word experiences afforded to them during the summer of 2009 and how it has helped prepare them for their future roles past graduation. Lexi Dauernheim On how she spent the summer of 2009: I spent two and a half weeks in Venezuela on a missions trip with the Campus Crusade for Christ here at the Academy. We worked with college students in Maracaibo, Venezuela and shared our faith with them. I also lived in Spain for four weeks. Three weeks were spent attending a civilian school and living with a host family who only spoke Spanish. Every weekend we traveled to another city in Spain and during the last week we stayed at the Spanish Naval Academy. While there, I attended their graduation, met the King and Queen of Spain, along with several foreign ambassadors and naval officers from Spain, Portugal, England, Japan and France. During my last block of leave I took part in PROTRAMID (Professional Training for Midshipmen), and spent one week experiencing life as a marine, one week on a surface ship, one week of submarines, and another as a pilot. There were a number of highlights which included getting to fly in a T-34 (the F-18 trainer), numerous helicopter rides, staying overnight on a submarine and spending the night in a mock town used for marine training. On what she took away from her summer experiences: It was an amazing summer. My Spanish speaking skills improved by an incredible amount as I gained the confidence to conjugate verbs on-the-fly and to learn to recognize repeated phrases and sayings. I wanted to learn how to speak to others about what I believed in. Being immersed in another culture and being taken out of my comfort zone was exactly what I had wanted. These trips really have inspired me to want to travel and contribute outside the country when I graduate. It showed me that I am the one who will carve my future career, if I want to do something, I just need to pursue it with my whole heart and I will be successful. Erin Rawlick On how she spent the summer of 2009: This summer I traveled to Mayport, Fla. for an aviation cruise. I shadowed a helicopter pilot attached to the HSL-44 squadron. I was able to spend four weeks understanding the life of a Navy Pilot. I was able to fly for about two hours in the SH-60B helicopter and also was a passenger on a six-hour night flight. When I wasn't with the squadron, I laid out on the beach located directly behind our rooms. I was also a detailer for the Class of 2013's plebe summer, where I was a squad leader in charge of 10 plebes. I was tasked with training them and preparing them to enter the Brigade. During my time as a detailer, I took a weekend off to tryout for the U.S. Developmental Lacrosse Team. On what she took away from her summer experiences: I was able to really get to know them (plebes) and it was a great experience watching them develop. This was by far the most rewarding summer training I have had since I have been at the Academy. The tryouts stand out as one of the best lacrosse experiences I have had in my lacrosse career. It was exciting to have the change to play with some of the best players in the country. I learned so much in one weekend. The experience really showed me a lot about my own potential as a player and how much I can improve if I bring a high level of intensity to every practice and game. Madison Bell On how she spent the summer of 2009: During my summer leave, I spent two weeks on an aircraft carrier off the coast of Alaska. We were flown onto the ship from Anchorage and then were underway until we made port in Everett, Wash. I was able to ride in a helicopter, which was definitely an awesome experience. Being on an aircraft carrier was amazing as well. It definitely was exciting to watch and be able to participate in the flight operations. It was also nice to spend a day in Alaska because in June the sun is out for a total 23 hours a day! On what she took away from her summer experiences I was able to get a view of how the "Real Navy" works. While the Academy is a great building block to a military career, one can only gain so much insight without having actual fleet experience. I now have a better understanding of life in the fleet and what will be expected of me as a naval officer. It was also beneficial to meet so many different people, hear their stories, and learn from their life experiences. 36
