The Bg Ten Conference felds a full complement of club teams. There s a tremendous nterest n rhs sporr, sad Bruce Wgo, executve drector for U.S. Water Polo. Water polo s not just made up for gender equty. It s not a sport that came about because of gender equty. It s an nternatonat spc>rl. It s l11 Olympc sport. Addng t makes so much sense lor so many reasons. The system s Those assocated wth water polo beleue the sport s begnnng to gan exposure now that many schools are lookng to add more women s sports to ther athletcs programs. Water polo s cost-effectvene.ss may be ts bggest draw, they contend. n place, t s cost effectve, t ncreases opportuntes for women..the lst s endless. Its cost-effectveness may be ts bggest draw. If an nsttuton felds a compettve swmmng team and has ts own swmmng faclty, t possesses the prmary ngredents for feldng a water polo team. Auburn s a good example. It recently opened an $1 I mllon aquatcs center and s lookng for ways to meet the Southeastern Conference s derson to requre each SC athletcs program to sponsor two more women s programs than men s. For Auburn, water polo s a good opton. Ths span s so attractve for a roupte of reasons, especally to (SC) schools sad Davd Marsh, head men s and women s swmmng coach at Auburn. Frst, every SC school has a potental frst- class water polo faclty already on hand. Second, n most cases, every school also has a pretty strong women s swmmng program. Those are the two prmary needs to feld a competrve team. Cost s low Really, the bggest expense s payng a coach and comng up wth a general budget sad Tenase. As tong as you have the faclty, there s not a lot of cost nvolved. As far as equpment goes, the only expense s for balls, goals and caps. It s really a cost-effectve sport? There are other benefts beyond the sport s cost-effectveness and ncreased partcpaton opportuntes for women. One of the bggesr benefts s that t provdes another team sport where women ran learn to be team members and have that experence wth them the rest of ther lves, sad Penny Dean, wornen s swmmng and dvng and water polo roach at Pomona-Ptzer Colleges. We ve always taught women that they can compete n ndvdual sports but not team sports. Ths can teach them that they can be pan of a team. It s somethng that they wlt carry for the rest of ther lves. What does the future hold for women s water polo? Wll t truly be an emergng sport on the NCAA horzon? Dean says yes, n tme. I thnk as soon as you see a school lke Stanford add the program, other schools wll follow, she sad. Rght now, I thnk schools are sttng back watng, but when a school wth the stature of Stanford goes varsty, I thnk others wlt, too. I m sure of t. The Atlantc Coast (.611) and Bg ght (.607) Conferences are the only other leagues wth wnnng records. The SC had a fve-year ttle streak end n 1988 when the Pac- IO compled a.794 (7-7) wnnng percentage- hghest n the 1980s. The SC was on top agan n 1989, but not n 1990, when the ACC broke through to take the honors.
