I would also lke to add to that crtcsm n that ths has handcuffed coaches and athletcs departments n promotng ther revenue and nonrevenue sports. In theory, the legslaton s good n that t wll help lmt the amount of tems that are maled to prospectve student-athletes. In practce, t s wrong n that t does not allow sports nformaton departments or coaches to be nnovatve wth ther team brochures. If a team wants to desgn ts one brochure to be a calendar or poster, then I see nothng wrong wth ths. Small unverstes and nonrevenue sports need to be creatve, because they do not have the resources to compete wth large ImAtype programs and revenue sports. For example, we have been publshng a calendar/ brochure for the past lve years. Ths s for men s and women s cross country and track and feld and ncludes all the normal brochure nformaton. It also has all the academc and athletcs schedules. Ths calendar s dstrbuted to alumn, famles and to all the admnstratve offces throughout the campus. Ths has been very costeffectve, whch I thnk s somethng that the NCAA s attemptng to do. Many tmes, the normal brochure costs thousands of dollars to publsh and to mal, only to have t st on a desk or bookshelf, never to be looked at agan. In spendng all the money to have our calendar prnted, It s very nce to know that t s beng used daly by all to whom t s sent. 4 4 TH NCAA NWS/October Passng, offensve yardage at record-settng By James M. Van Valkenburg NCAA Ijrector of Statstcs At mdseason, passng emphass and effcency and offensve yardage n Dvson I-A are movng at an alltme national-record pace. Passng emphass has reached 38.6 percent compared to the record hgh set n 19X, when 3X percent of all rushng-passng plays were passes. mphass had declned shghtly to 37.6 percent n 19X3 and 37 4 n Meanwhle, effcency s breakng the record hghs set n 19X3. Yards per attempted pas (6.X0), pass completon percentage (3.7) and yards per rushng-passng play (4.9) are above the records of and 4.9, respectlvcly. As a result, offensve yardage has soared well above the records set n wth an average of 37X.4 passng yards per game and 7 1. I rushngpassng yards In total oflense vs. the records of 36. and Not surprsngly, scorng also s above the record at 4.4 ponts per game (both teams combned. all 306 games nvolvng at least one I-A team) vs. the record 44. n One factor s touchdown passes, at.3 per game vs. the record.16 m 198. And t has happened even though feld goals have declned a bt to.0 per game from the record.30 of last year. I-AA contnues record pace Passng and total offense contnue to soar well above the record fgures of a year ago n Dvson I-AA, where passng emphass has reached 41 percent vs. the record of 39.4 n Passng yards per game (37.8). total offense yards per game (683.7), scorng (44. I ponts per game), pass completon percentage (0.). yards per total offensve play (4.78) and feld goals per game (I.6) are above the I- AA marks set n 1984 of , 43.6, 0, 4.7 and 1.60, respectvely (ths s the eghth year of I-AA competton). dde and the Bear Gramblng State coach dde Robnson was tellng Herschel Nssenson of the Assocated Press about hs wheelmg and dealng wth Alabama s Paul Bear Bryant n tryng to match ther teams for a game n Tokyo. We agreed to play, Robnson sad. Hs schedule was fxed, but there was a way to play a 1th game n loky. When he fnally got back to me, sayng hc could play over there, they had gotten somebody else. Rut I knd of feel now that had hc been alve and stll coachng, I feel we wcrc gonna play. That was not the only wheelmg and dealng between the two old trends, who used to become so absorbed In talkng football at conventons that dde s wfe would gve up and go shoppng-and not be mlssed. In the 1970s. hoth were recrutng a tght end named Mke Moore. Moore s mother called Robnson, sad her son was gong to Grambllng, prased the school, then added, Coach Bryant sad that would be the best school for Mke. Recalled Robnson I called the Bear and sad, Man, why are you beng s.o nce! I know. You re tryng to keep hm from Shug (Auburn coach Shug Jordan). (Rohlnson goes for vctory No. 36 October I9 aganst Msssspp Valley State; both teams are -O.) McCartney s Comets Colorado coach Bll McCartney, wth one eye on hs young personnel and another on hs team s I - IO season of 1984, decded to swtch to a wshbone offense for ths fall, and hs team s off to a 4-l start after rankng among the naton s leaders n rushng wth more than 300 yards a game. Hs team s executon of the tme-eatng, ground-gobblng offense has been close to perfect, wth flawless centerquarterback exchanges all the way. In addton, the Buffaloes have started the same players n each game, and traner Dave Burton and hs staff have made only one trp to the playng Alahama > Mke Shula ranks&t n passng efjctency n Dvson I- A feld to tend to an njured player. Sad Burton, n hs frst year at Colorado If ths keeps up, I mght be out of a job. Indeed, 11 ths keeps up, Colorado could be the natlon s comeback team of 19X. Rut the true belevers n Boulder who study astronomy and football knew t all the tme. You see, Colorado has been nearly nvncble durng a year m whch Halley s comet was vsble from the earth. In 1909 and 1910, the last tme the comet was seen n Boulder, Colorado, the Buffs were undefeated each season. The comet wll reappear ths fall and next sprng. A year ago, McCartney s Comets lost to Mssour, -7. In ther game October 1, the Buffaloes beat Mssour 38-7, a 76-pont turnaround. By the way, McCartney and Woody Football Wdenhofer, MssourB new coach, are old frends and were teammates back n the 1960s when both played for Dan Devne at Mssour. In fact, Woody even ntroduced Mac to hs future wle, I.ynd Taussg. n ther college days. (Davd Plot, Colorado SID) Other wnnng bones A year ago, Army coach Jm Young swtched to the wshbonc, moved many players to new postons and won eght games, the last n a bowl. And ths year, Army s undefeated after that stunnng 4-14 vctory over Boston College October 1. Ths year, followmg 4-7 seasons In 1984, Texas Tech coach Jerry Moore and Pacfc coach Bob Cope both went to the wshbone wth mproved won-lost results. In fact, there are nne Dvson I-A teams usmg the wshbone, tlexbonc or, n Mlsslsslpp State s case, the nverted wshbone at least, as far as we know. And get ths ~ four of them are undefeated (Ar Force 6-O. Army -0, Arkansas -U and Oklahoma 3-O) wth Colorado once-beaten (by Oho State) at 4-l In addton, Msstsspp State s 4-, Pacfc 3-3, Texas Tech 3-3 and Wyomng l- for a combned bone record of for.708. Are there any other bones out there? No Bo bone On the other hand, Auburn deserted the wshbone for the I, to gve Bo Jackson more carres; and he s runnng wld and leadng the country n rushng at nearly 00 yards per game (19X.) --a pace thrd on the all-tme season lst behnd Southern Calforna s Marcus Allen (1.9 n 1981) and Cornell s d Marnaro (09.0 n 1971). Scholar-athletes Kevn Anthony, North Carolna quarterback who s rewrtng the school passng records, has a 3.78 grade-pont average (4.000 scale) for hs college career, whch qualfes hm for Ph Beta Kappa. Inductons wll be made later ths fall. The 6-, 187-pound junor from George Duarte. Northern Arzonu. leads Dvson I- A A n nterceptons wth nne Decatur, Georga, won the startng job a year ago, hut t was not easy. I don t mnd sayng that makng Ph Beta Kappa was my No. I prorty last fall, he says. But I was also tryng to he a startng quarterback as a sophomore wth all the practce and flm work that goes wth that. I was stayng up late and gettng up early to study. I was really at t mentally and physcally almost constantly. I ve never been through a more dffcult tme. Stll, Anthony dd a good job n class, then he mproved hs GPA even more wth a last sprng and reached hs goal. (Rck Brewer. North Corolno SlD) Greg Dngens, Notre Dame senor defensve tackle wth a gradepont average, preceded hs teammates to Mchgan last month to nvervew notes wth the Unversty of Mchgan medcal school. He has snce receved word that he has been offcally accepted. Dngens s also a nomnee for a Rhodes scholarshp. It s not easy, Dngens told Phll Rchards, Indanapols Star. It takes a lot of self-dscplne and sacrfce. You put so much tme and effort rnto football. I ll get back to my room at 8 o clock and I m tred and beat up and the last thng I feel lke dong s httng the books. verybody s sttng around watchng Monday nght football or somethng. I just have to tell myself I don t want toget behmd I ll usually drag myself to the lbrary (for about three hours a nght). The 6-6, 7-pound senor from Bloomfeld Hlls, Mchgan, has a young brother, Matt, 6-6 and 4, who plays nose tackle for Notre Dame. The Dmgens brothers, two Mchgan starters cornerback Brad Cochran and splt end Paul Joksch and two Mchgan State starters~ quarterhack Dave Yarema and defensve tackle Mark Nchols ~~ were hgh school teammates, gong 7-3 and wnnng the state champonshp at 1-O n Greg s junor year. They were even more mposng as a basketball team, wth John Shasky, then 6-10 and now a 7-foot startng center at Mnnesota. (Roger Valdlserr. Notre Dame SID) Chcago s Bruce Montella, the natonal Dvson III rushng leader at 16.6 yards per game, has been accepted to the prestgous Prtrker School of Medcne at the Unversty of Chcago. He s a bologcal scences major. (Frank Lub-v, Chcago assstant SID) Ths s from the Ma, I got good news and bad news department. Jeff Anderson, senor tght end and one of seven premed majors on the North Park team, recently was notfed of hs acceptance nto the prestgous Unversty of Mchgan medcal school. On the same day, he broke hs hand n practce. He s from Kentwood. Mchgan. (Denns Prkkel, Pete Saranek. Carthage College, ranks second among Dvson III rushers North Park SID) Collegate record ted Carthage senor Pete Baranek ted the all-tme, all-dlvslons collegate NCAA record for rushng yards n a sngle game wth hs 38-yard performance onjust 4 carres October aganst North Central n a 33-8 Carthage vctory. Baranek ted the record set by Northern Iowa s Kelly F.lhs on 40 carres aganst Western Illnos Ottober 13, 1979, whch s also the Dvson I I record (both teams are now I&AA). He also broke the Dvson I11 record of 34 by Dave Bednarek of Wsconsn-Rver Falls on 30 carres aganst Wsconsn-Stevens Pont n 19X3 and surpassed both the I-A record (37 by Rueben Mayes, Washngton State aganst Oregon n I984 and the I-AA record (34 by Russell Davs, Idaho, aganst Portland State n 1981). Baranek, a swft, -l 0, I8-pounder, scored four touchdowns on runs of 74. 0, 71 and 9 yards. l-he key to the whole thng was the offensve lne blockng, sad Baranek. They just dd asuperjob. The holes were there. Hs coach, Roger Scott, who s n hs frst year as a head coach, sad Pete has great acceleraton. The lnemen held ther blocks long enough to allow hm through and hs acceleraton and speed dd the rest. He scored on four dfferent types of plays, so t wasn t that we had found a specal weakness n the North Central defense. Baranek s a physcal educaton and health major who hopes to coach after graduaton. I m just tryng to keep ths n perspectve, he sad. We ddn t go lookng for a record. We were n aclose game and t happened. Baranek ranks second n Dvson III rushng natonally at 14.X yards per game. (John Hlhrnk. Carthage SID) Career records smashed Wth hs season less than hall fnshed, Dave Gessler, senor quarterback at Wsconsn-Stevens Pont, already holds the all-tme Dvson Ill career records for total-offense yards (7,68), passng yards (8,097) and completons (676). through games of October. Wth sx games left, he had a shot at 10,000 passng yards. Wheaton s (Illnos) Keth Bshop, playng two fewer games than Gelsslcr ths season, also seems certan to break the former Dvson III career yardage records n both categores and has an outsde chance to even move pat Gessler wth some bg games. The former career mark n total otfense was 7,16 by Davd Parker of Bshop n 19X1-84, whle Attendance almost pace Valpuruso s- Mke Healey s the leadng recever and thrd n scorng n Dvson II Crag Solomon of Rhodes held the former career passng yardage mark at 7.3 I4 n 197-7X and Scott Drggers of Colorado College had the old cornpletons record at 6 I3 n 19X I -X4. (You have to gve Wheaton s Bshop a chance. For nstance, he has passed for 6,3 yards n just IX games over the last two seasons hs 363.X-yard average n 1984 was a Dvson III record.)
