OTTAWA NEMESIS MINOR FIELD LACROSSE 20 REPORT February 24, 2014 Annual Program Report Submitted to Board Secretary for submission at the Annual General Meeting, the following document summarizes the 20 field lacrosse season activities, evaluation and highlights.

Report A N N U A L G E N E R A L M E E T I N G - F E B R U A R Y 2 4, ONE ABOUT OTTAWA NEMESIS FIELD LACROSSE Mission The Ottawa Nemesis mission is to promote, govern and improve the game of field lacrosse in the National Capital region. Vision The Ottawa Nemesis will provide guidance and direction to its members, through strong and ethical leadership. By 2020, field lacrosse will be a highly visible sport in the National Capital Region with cooperation from all communities. Our membership will grow and our teams will develop to compete at all levels. The long-term vision is to fill a Junior Field Lacrosse team [this was achieved in 2011 with participation in the OJMFLL]. We will encourage a cooperative environment that fosters participation and respect between athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers. Objectives To foster among its members, supporters and teams, a general community spirit within the area under its jurisdiction; To maintain and increase interest in the game of field lacrosse by providing to all who desire, where it has in its power to do so, the opportunity to participate in field lacrosse giving due consideration to their individual capabilities; To teach fair play and sportsmanship and to develop the skills of the participants in its charge; and To exercise a general supervision and direction over its players, team, game officials and Board members with emphasis on the enhancement of healthy recreation, good character and citizenship; 20 Page 1

TWO HOUSE LEAGUE PROGRAM The season was launched on Saturday August 17th and 24th each featuring a 2 hour "warm up session". This provided players an opportunity to practice prior to league play as well as facilitated preseason evaluation for coaches. Player registrations by division were as follows: JK-SK Gr 1 Gr 2 Gr 3 Gr 4 Gr 5 Gr Gr 7 Gr 8 Gr 9 Gr 10 Gr 11 Gr 12 U Practices A full season practice schedule was released early September providing the opportunity for players Gr 5-12 to attend 2 practices weekly, starting September 10th and concluding mid-october in the East end (due to field availability) and October 24th in the West end. A total of 9 practice hours were accessible at each end of the city, facilitated by volunteer instructors. Games Refereed games (intersquad) were scheduled for each division starting September 7th (excluding Thanksgiving weekend) at the Confederation Fields. The game recap is below. Ottawa Nemesis House League Game Schedule Date Gr9-12 Gr7-8 Gr5-6 Gr3-4 Gr K-2 Sept 7, Sept 14, 20 Practice Practice Practice Practice Practice Sept 21, Sept 28, Oct 5, Oct 19, Oct 26, Skills Fun Day Hallowe'en Howler Classic 20 A season finale fun day was organized again this season. A total of 7 games were officiated, player of the games were selected by referees in consultation with coaches, free t-shirts were distributed to Nemesis registrants and 20 Page 2

a skills competition was organized for the Kdgn-Gr 2 players. It was a very rainy, wet and cold day; however, a large number of players attended the concluding session of the 20 house league season. A gallery of pictures is available on the Nemesis website. Special thanks is extended to Danielle St. Pierre who attended and photographed the entire day - player of the game awards, team pictures and skills competition participants and thereby providing photographic mementos for players and parents. Tournament Turkeyshoot 20 Special thanks is extended to Angela Hatfield-Lamoureux who tirelessly registered players over the course of many practices and Saturday sessions, registered the organization in the Turkeyshoot, managed all registration paperwork, waivers and team lists. Angela also ensured families received information required to travel to the annual Turkeyshoot tournament. Tournament pictures and results can be found on the Nemesis website. Quote from a parent of the 5-6 team following the Turkeyshoot: Thank you Coach Matt & Greg for your time and help. I can sincerely say that this was one of my son's best lacrosse experiences. Recommendations 1. Evaluate the need for two practices weekly. Ideal if a central field could be located to hold one practice weekly (ease of equipment delivery, volunteer availability, and resulting in increasing total players/practice), although centrally located lit fields are not readily accessible; 2. Secure volunteer for game day operations (oversight for game schedule, game sheet/scorekeeper assignments, questions); 3. Provide each coach with coach bag: balls, pylons, set of goal equipment for the season (throat and chest protectors, bottoms/ jock, stick); 4. Provide schedule for entire season at time of registration - adjust depending on registration volume; 5. Schedule trip to AKW before season launch and alert registrants; 6. Schedule evaluators during August warm up sessions and 1st Saturday games then balance immediately and post teams on website; 7. Update game results weekly to generate competition between teams at each division; 8. Add a coach tab to website where practice plans, drills etc. can be accessed. Highlights Registration remained fairly comparable to 2012: increase at K-2 level and decrease at 5-8 levels: 20 Page 3

Tshirts were distributed during the Hallowe'en Howler Classic fun day. Special thanks to Coach Kevin Mullington for designing the 20 tshirts! Some remain in inventory for distribution during the 2014 season launch. Nemesis Pinneys were ordered in September as the original inventory was depleted. There is a wide range of sizes available for purchase during 2014 registration dates. Nemesis Apparel was organized fully by a new vendor not requiring a dedicated volunteer. Nemesis Executive were grateful to Julie and Dave of The Safety House and volunteers Janet, Sonia, Angela for assisting during apparel fitting/ordering days. The vendor returned orders within 7-14 days. It is recommended that The Safety House be secured for Nemesis apparel distribution in THREE COMPETITIVE PROGRAM Nemesis U16 The U16 team scheduled two weekly practices, two hours each, generally prior to or sharing fields with the U19 team from August to November. Exhibition games were organized with OLA endorsement against Team Quebec U16, Akwesasne JV, Whitby U16 and Clarington U16. The team also registered in the following tournaments: Haymaker Classic (Albany NY), Gladiator Games (Albany NY) and Turkeyshoot (Ithaca NY). Registration fee of $100 tryout, $200 competitive fee and $60 uniform fee were collected from each player. The U16 team assigned a roster of 18 runners, 2 goalies and 5 affiliates. Nemesis was very fortunate to secure 3 coaches for this U16 team. Mike Eagan and Kirk Kealey ran the offense, while Kevin Wallace ran the defense. This format allowed the coaching staff to concentrate on certain specific aspects during games and this system worked quite well. Tom King and Matthew Firth provided additional assistance during weeknight practices. Recommendation: Secure 2 coaches: A defensive coach and an offensive coach which will definitely benefit the player development in the long term. Recommendation: Consider keeping the U16 team as a tournament team. However try to schedule exhibition games against other U16 teams in the province. Registration in the fall OMFLL program requires team travel to Toronto and further South/West for six weekends. Given this age of players are still committed to other fall/winter sports, the option to register in the OMFLL formally may not be feasible both from a player commitment and player investment (travel costs) perspective. However, the opportunity to play regular games vs other highly competitive teams is important to the continued player/team development. The ultimate success of this team was the dedication of both parents, and players. We had a core group of players that attended every practice. On average, /20 players regularly attended practices. The parents were great all year long, contributing throughout the season in order to make this a successful year. Nemesis U19 The U19 team scheduled two weekly practices on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, two hours each, from August to November. Exhibition games were organized with OLA endorsement against College Brebeuf. The U19s did 20 Page 4

not participate as a team in any tournaments, although players represented other competitive teams in tournaments in the US and some players represented the Ottawa Nemesis Varsity team at the annual Turkeyshoot. Registration fee of $100 tryout, $200 competitive fee and $60 uniform fee were collected from each player. The U19 team assigned a roster of 21 runners, 1 goalie and encouraged varsity players from the house league program to attend practices for additional development. Jamie Forster reported: We had a fantastic season: went during the regular season. Although we stumbled in the Semi-final match we saw tremendous growth in the players over the course of the year. I feel they all made great strides in becoming better Field Lacrosse players which will help them as they move forward with their Lacrosse careers. We had a tremendous amount of Team unity throughout the season. Next year we plan on building on the same foundation and hopefully will have continued success down the road. The only real challenge we encountered over the course of season was having 4 players that were at school in Kingston and were unable to attend practices. Recommendations Competitive U16 & U19 1. Consider entering U16 team in the OMFLL if leagues (OMFLL & OJMFLL) will consider adjusting schedules to permit both Ottawa teams to play on Sundays within the OJMFLL schedule. 2. Secure U19 host; consider requesting OJMFLL assign more than two teams to the Ottawa host schedule. 3. Facilitate additional exhibition games vs highly competitive teams for both U16 & U19 teams. 4. The OJMFLL requires all U19 to provide score/timekeepers for each game. Nemesis volunteers should ensure that referee gamesheet sign off is accurate by the end of each first quarter of every game (total players listed on gamesheet is same as players on the field - per OJMFLL Policy, specifically related to playoff eligibility). Highlights U16 inaugural team was highly competitive (see game result summary); The 20 U16 was truly regional: Kingston, Brockville, Gloucester and Nepean districts; U16 uniforms were purchased by players. U19 OJMFLL season finished league play with an unbeaten record representing a significant improvement year over year since joining the league three years ago; The U19 was also comprised of players from across the region: Kingston, Kemptville, Gloucester, Nepean and one player attending school in Toronto; Per the OJMFLL policy papers, an alternate set of white uniforms was purchased for the U19 team. FOUR INVESTING IN THE LACROSSE COMMUNITY Community Partnerships Carleton Ravens Men's Lacrosse: Nemesis continues to promote the relationship with Carleton Ravens Men's Lacrosse. In October Nemesis participated in the Carleton annual Mums delivery fundraiser. Carleton players and past coaches continue to provide guidance during player selections and house league sort outs. Nemesis 20 Page 5

players also volunteer during the Ravens' hosts. At the conclusion of the U19 season, Nemesis provides a graduating player list to the Ravens' Club president. NCSSAA Boys' Lacrosse: Nemesis continues to support the development of high school lacrosse programs. Jerseys, goal equipment, and portable nets were provided to Glebe, St. FX, St. Pius schools in 20. Local Box Lacrosse Associations: Both Gloucester and Nepean continue to promote the availability of fall field lacrosse through registration with Ottawa Nemesis. Development Coaches: In 20, Ottawa Nemesis hosted a Competitive Field Lacrosse Coaching Clinic open to the entire region. Ottawa Nemesis now has 7 fully certified Field lacrosse coaches (pending completion of their coach workbooks). Referees: The Nemesis volunteers are once again grateful to the referee community for the support of the house league and competitive programs. Lead by Jim Jordan who assigns referees weekly for the Saturday house league game schedule, mentors newly certified refs and attends each Saturday session providing oversight, Ottawa has experienced a rich crop of refs from Level 1-5. In 20 for the first time, Nemesis provided a subsidy to the L1-2 referees. A total of xx subsidies were paid with an agreement that a minimum of 5 games were officiated resulting in a repayment of remaining certification fee. Following is a summary of the games and referee assignments: Name Ottawa Nemesis Fall 20 Referee Assignments (HL & U19) 7-Sep- 14-Sep- 15-Sep- 21-Sep- 28-Sep- 5-Oct- 19-Oct- 26-Oct- # Gm Assigned/Ref Calberry, Luke Cantor, Zach Cassidy, Darren Conley, Brock Conley, Curtis Forster, Aaron 0 Forster, Jamie Forster, Seth Grenon, Jacob Miller, Andrew Sauve, Shane 0 Searle, Bill Smith, Al Smith, Steve 2 2 Cochrane, Jim Total Assigned Games Page 6

Coach and Volunteer Acknowledgements Nemesis experienced a rich base of many knowledgeable and committed coaches for each division and program. Operationally, Nemesis will need to solicit and secure additional volunteers to sustain the program in upcoming years. Sincere thanks is extended to the following volunteers who contributed to the success of the 20 season (we apologize to anyone who may have been omitted from the listing): Jason Bosomworth Gr 1-4 John Conley JV Malcolm Cornish Gr 1-4 Rob Reynolds JV Brent Hopkins Gr 1-4 Sonia Bessette U16 Chris Lamoureux Gr 1-4 Mike Eagan U16 Patrick O'Connell Gr 1-4 Matt Firth U16 Daniel Sipes Gr 1-4 Kirk Kealey U16 Jeff Sweet Gr 1-4 Tom King U16 Jennifer Warren Gr 1-4, 5-6 Kevin Wallace U16 Wes Kennedy Gr 3-4 Steve Barker U19 Chris Lamoureux Gr 5-6 James Forster U19 Greg Rampley Gr 5-6 George McLeod U19 Kevin Mullington Gr 7-8 Alan Gallagher VOL Bill Searle Gr 7-8 Janet King VOL Mark Ventrcek Gr 7-8 Angela Hatfield-Lamoureux VOL Des Cain Gr 9-10 Bonnie Kent VOL Peter Cochrane Gr 9-10 Sue Sauve VOL Greg Kent Gr 9-10 Marci Leblanc VOL Nick Lavoy Gr 9-12 Jennica Klaasen VOL 20 Page 7

APPENDIX I COMPETITIVE PROGRAM TEAM STRATEGIES Nemesis U16 Season in Review Submitted by Kirk Kealey on behalf of Mike Eagan and Kevin Wallace Record GP W L The coaching staff ran a very simple offense using 2 formations: and the Coaches stressed ball movement on offense and driving the net. Once a defensive play slides, to help, players were instructed to move the ball to the open player. Players read what the defense presented instead of just running plays. Defensively, the coaches instituted a man to man system, each player responsible to slide when needed. The coaching staff called out who was hot man (the first to help) and who was the secondary slide man. The U16s ran 2 clears and one ride throughout the year, keeping things as simple as possible. The highlight of the season was 2 exhibition games played in Whitby. Those high level games gave the coaches a great measure of where the team stood against teams in the province. The boys played quite well and went 1-1. Nemesis U19 Season in Review Submitted by Jamie Forster, Steve Barker Our main objectives for the season were: 1. Institute a free flowing offense where players were encouraged to create scoring opportunities by exploiting what the defense presented. We instituted two simple rules on offense to accomplish this: If the ball moves toward you clear out and if the ball moves away from you follow. These 2 simple rules enabled our players to run a motion offense that created space and made double teaming(sliding) very difficult for opposing Teams. These 2 rules were predicated on our primary concepts of beat your man score a goal and if you draw two defenders move the ball. The players picked up on the offensive concepts very early on in the season and were successful. This helped to breed confidence in the offensive concepts that we were implementing. During the regular season we averaged around 11 goals per game. 2. Transition: Defense(rides). We kept this aspect of game very simple. We instituted a Zone ride package which helped to create turnovers afforded us opportunities for double teams and slowed down the opposing teams in transition. We ran a couple of different clears. Boys caught on clears very well and we able to clear the ball effectively on most occasions throughout the year. 20 Page 8

3. Individual and Team defense. We spent a great portion of our practices enforcing simple techniques to help players understand the importance of taking away offensive players strong hand and forcing the ball to the outside of the field. For Team defense we preached communication. We introduced Adjacent slides, Interior slides as well as Bumps and Throughs for recoveries. The boys bought into the defensive packages and had good success. I believe we had the lowest goals against average during the regular season. 4. Allow and encourage player input into the program. We were blessed with some very experienced and knowledgeable players. We drew on their experience in certain game situations to run what they felt would work. We felt this is a very important part of the program with this age group. We wanted this to be their Team and valued their input. To empower the players to learn on their own we sent out the link to the Duke Lacrosse coaching series that is online at Laxpower.com. We used this online coaching series as a blueprint for the season. Most of players watched some or all of the videos. The series in an invaluable resource for Coaching Field Lacrosse and I would encourage the Nemesis Field Program to institute some or all of the principals put forth in this series. 20 Page 9
