1 STIX n PUX BMHA Newsletter PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hi everyone, I apologize for the delay in this edition of Stix n Pux. There were a number of items that required my attention ahead of preparing this communication, one of which was the terrible Humboldt Bronco tragedy that deeply impacted me -more on this later. I also think in the back of my mind, since this is my last Stix n Pux communication to the BMHA membership, I was searching too deeply for the right thoughts to express. So here goes: First, I want to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to read the monthly Stix n Pux and who supported the message that I was trying to convey each month. Burnaby Minor Hockey Association is a fantastic community-based volunteer organization for Burnaby children to learn to play the great game of ice hockey. I want to thank ALL our volunteers who without their support, we could not offer the life experiences and memories that this TEAM sport provides. The following is the speech I prepared for the BMHA Volunteer Banquet which was held on April 21, 2018 at the Burnaby Hilton that I would like to share at this time: I would like to welcome everyone here tonight to thank you for your volunteerism this past season. We all know that without you, our kids would not be able to enjoy the wonderful experience that minor hockey offers from learning how to skate, to developing the hockey skills, to learning how to play together as a team, to making life-long friendships & lasting memories, to know what it takes to succeed, to know how to react when things don t go your way, to learning respect & discipline, to learning how to turn a negative into a positive, to picking yourself up after falling down, to learning how to deal with adversity, to learning the valuable life skills that will stay with you forever.. We have all been deeply saddened by the news out of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Looking around this room tonight, seeing so many volunteers who have worked in a variety of ways to make the hockey experience possible for not only your own children, but hundreds of others. I know that we are all grieving for those lives that were lost and forever changed in the bus crash. As some of you may know, our eldest son played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in his final year of Junior Hockey. I had the opportunity to watch him play on a road trip that included a game in the Humboldt Arena. A few days after this recent accident, our son Tyler sent us an . He said he had felt a need to write down some of his own special hockey memories. With his permission, I would like to share this memoire with you as I feel it shines a bright light on the experience of a player riding the bus with his hockey teammates. Approximately eleven years ago, back in 2007, I boarded a charter bus in Vernon, BC bound for Trail, BC. This wasn t your average charter greyhound bus or public transportation; it was something different, something special.

2 It was near the beginning of September and training camp with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL had just drawn to a close. I was seventeen years old at the time and was one of the fortunate selected players that made the teams opening roster. For me, travelling on a team bus with a hockey team was not something new as I had been on many bus trips in Bantam and Midget hockey. However, travelling as a young rookie on a bus loaded with 18,19 and 20 year-olds in British Columbia s junior A hockey league was a little bit intimidating, to say the least. It didn t take long for me to get a sense of the unwritten rules of the road while travelling on a junior hockey bus. I threw my bag in the compartments under the bus and assisted the other rookies with loading all of the essentials: stick bag, water bottles, pucks, jerseys, mobile skate sharpener (not fun to lift). I then walked onto the bus and found my seat very close to the local radio broadcaster and coaching staff near the front of the bus (veterans at the back, rookies in the front). As I was one of the younger players on the team, I tried to fly under the radar, but I quickly learned that older players at the back of the bus would often call the rookies out by name. Hey MAH! they d shout, I would turn around and acknowledge them only to hear a reply just checking for A**holes buddy! ferocious laughter ensuing from the back 8 rows of the bus. About 30 minutes into the bus ride we stopped at a gas station to grab pre-game snacks and food/drinks for after the game as we wouldn t be stopping on the way back to Vernon after the game. I remember walking into the gas station and grabbing a bottle of water and a small bag of corn nuts. I was second in line to pay for my $4 worth of items when I hear the team captains voice from behind say, Hey Mah, do you mind if I jump in front of you I have a bunch of stuff and don t want to drop it. I turned back to see his hands were loaded with candy bags, chips, pepperoni sticks, beef jerky you name it, he had it all. I told him of course he could go ahead of me, I had to be last on the bus anyway (again un-written rule, rookies are last on the bus). So the captain dumps his stuff onto the counter and the cashier rings him in for a total of $ I see that he is patting down his pants and jacket pockets assuming he is looking for his wallet. He then turns to me and says, Hey kid can you get this for me? I left my wallet on the bus, I ll meet you back there thanks. So I end up paying $47.25 on my debit card (I was lucky the transaction even went through as I didn t have much money in my account) and headed back to the bus thinking I ll be reimbursed in due time. I was sadly mistaken, upon stepping back onto the bus with two grocery bags full of candy and pepperoni sticks the Head Coach looks at me and says, I sure hope that s not what I think it is and it better not all be for you to which my reply was Oh no coach, Cap forgot his wallet in there so I just spotted him, he s going to pay me back. The coach looks at me with a big grin on his face and says, Welcome to junior hockey, kid. I don t know if I was too innocent or just naïve but I continued on past the coach toward the back of the bus to hand over the items to the captain. As I got close to the back of the bus I hear a guy start a slow clap start in row 14, then row 15, 16, 17 and so on until the synchronized clap is at full speed and everybody on the bus is cheering. THANKS FOR THE TREATS, MAH!!!! the captain yells and grabs the bags from my hands, the old I forgot my wallet trick strikes again he says as he jabs me on the shoulder and sends me back to my seat at the front of the bus. As I get back to my seat I can hear the guys at the back still laughing and tossing around the snacks. Then I suddenly hear the head coach in a loud stern voice yell, Focus up, it s game-time now, let s be ready to come out flying so you can enjoy those treats after the game. Everybody on the bus suddenly zips their lips, throws their headphones in and it s all business. We arrived at the Trail Smoke Eater s Cominco Arena and I had the privilege to play my second BCHL regular season game (I had previously played as an affiliate for Vernon in one game the year prior). We won in double overtime and it was an experience I will never forget.

3 The un-written rules of the road I previously mentioned weren t all bad, in fact I came to love them as a player. For example, we left the Trail parking lot after the game and the captain screamed from the back of the bus, Hey Bussy, two big honks for the WIN!!!, followed by two very loud and long horn blasts and screams of joy and excitement from the entire team. We travelled back to the Vernon arena with music blasting, stories being shared, sing-a-long songs being sung by everyone including rookies, veterans, trainers and coaches. I even got invited to the back of the bus to sit with the veterans to play cards and tell jokes together. I ended up getting sent back down to Junior B that season but I had gotten a taste of what Junior A hockey life was all about, and I loved every minute of it. My hockey career ended up lasting for approximately seven more years through 3 seasons of Junior A hockey in the BCHL, AJHL, and SJHL and 4 more seasons at the Collegiate level at Simon Fraser University. Throughout these years I was fortunate enough to enjoy numerous (over 200+) bus trips with teammates and coaches from across North America. Every bus ride we embarked on forged a new and often lasting memory. Watching old classics like Slapshot, Happy Gilmore, Mighty Ducks became an all too common occurrence on these trips. Playing card games, telling jokes, sharing stories, singing songs, or simply having pre-game naps were things that became a necessity in Junior hockey life. It didn t matter if you were the youngest player on the team, the coaching staff, trainer, or the broadcaster, everybody on that team bus including the driver was a family. Although there were road-trips that weren t so fun after losing a few games on the road, I think it is safe to say that every player on that bus no matter the mood, would rather be with those 23 teammates and team personnel than be anywhere else. We play hockey for a love of the game and a love of the lasting friendships that can made from the many road trips we all embark on with different teams. We as hockey players know that our family is different; our family is special. I continue to pray for the players/staff of the Humboldt Broncos and their families/billet families that have been affected by this tragedy. I also pray for the hockey families across the world that have deep holes in their hearts. I have personally felt a great sadness in this incident as I reflect on my many memories that I have playing hockey throughout my life. I take comfort knowing that all of those players would not have wanted to be anywhere else, they were doing what they loved and I know where they are, they will be doing the same. In closing, I would like to conclude by saying that during the past four years as President of the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association, I have seen many positive and enlightening achievements both big & small: From the Junior Bulldog and H1 players back in 2014 who are now going into H4 or atom seeing their advancement in skating skills is inspiring To the on-going success and growth of the Female Remembrance Day Tournament To the development of the Female teams and the success of the Female Bantam C team this year To all the President s C League banners won by the Burnaby Bulldogs in Atom, Bantam & Midget this year and in the past 4 years To the continuing development and success of our Atom Rep & C teams To the unprecedented success of our Bantam A1 s from last season and the Midget A1 s this season with both teams making it to the Provincials! To the growth and success of our Referee development program led by Brett Rafferty To the behind the scenes dedication and long hours spent in the dungeon of Burnaby Lake Arena John Petrak managing the distribution, return and repair of our goalie equipment all by hand! To Cathy Nielsen tirelessly sorting, organizing, ordering and re-sorting BMHA jerseys to ensure that all our players have home & away jerseys At which I will again ask for a NEW volunteer to step forward and FINALLY relieve Cathy in this position as she has gone above & beyond in this role and deserves a break

4 To our Ice Allocator Extraodinaire, Angela Sam who makes sure that everyone has the right ice time and that conflicts are resolved To our Communications Prime, Rebecca Chau, making sure that our members are informed and that we have content for the monthly Stix n Pux and that I have prepared my message To our Amazing Registrar, Liz Vela, who ensures that our teams, coaches, players and volunteers are properly registered and rostered To Larry Hayes, who with his 40 years of invaluable BMHA experience which includes stints at BC Hockey & PCAHA thank you, thank you, thank you for your always insightful guidance Last but not least, to the BMHA Executive team for all your diligence, dedication, patience and leadership in managing and directing our course and for dealing with all the sensitive minor hockey opportunities Thank you ALL! Finally, to our membership, I thank everyone for being POSITIVE DIFFERENCE MAKERS and supporting the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association the past four seasons and for the seasons to come, good luck and continue BEING POSITIVE DIFFERENCE MAKERS for the Burnaby minor Hockey Association! - Darryl President Darryl receiving his very well-deserved Service to Association Award at the Volunteer Banquet for all his time and effort into making BMHA better for its members!
