STIX n PUX BMHA Newsletter PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Members, A lot has happened in the past month. The Association lost a colleague and long-time volunteer, Mr. Kelly Miles. Kelly passed away on September 28, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV. On Friday, October 19, 2018, Clarissa and I, along with over three full tables of BMHA family, attended a Celebration of Life for Kelly along with a room full of Kelly's family and friends, including his long-time school friends and coworkers. Past President, Darryl Mah, gave a very heartfelt tribute to Kelly. It was very evident that Kelly touched many lives in his short fifty years. BMHA provided a floral arrangement for the service. It cannot be said enough but on behalf of the Association, I would like to extend our condolences to Laura, Raiden, and Danika and thank them for sharing Kelly's time with all of us over the years. It is much appreciated. The association has prepared KM helmet stickers. I would encourage everyone to put one on their helmet in Kelly's honour. Also as you know, municipal elections were held on October 20, 2018 in British Columbia. Mr. Mike Hurley was elected to be our new Mayor. Congratulations, Mayor-Elect Hurley. Mayor-Elect Hurley is a BMHA parent so you may see him and his family around the rinks. We would like to thank out-going Mayor, Mr. Derek Corrigan, for his thirty-one years of service to the City of Burnaby (sixteen years as mayor) and support of BMHA over many years. Further, our very own Executive Administrator, Mr. Larry Hayes, was elected to his sixth term as School Trustee. Congratulation, Larry. And now some housekeeping. A general reminder to everyone to treat our teammates and opponents with respect. This will serve you well throughout life and hopefully help you spend less time in the penalty box. And coaches, please continue to ensure proper supervision of your teams at all times. This Remembrance Day, Sunday, November 11, 2018, let us remember all the men and women of Canada who have faithfully served our country over the years, so many making the ultimate sacrifice, so that we may live in peace and freedom. Lest we forget. - Lucas
BMHA REMEMBERS KELLY MILES It is with great sorrow we announce that Kelly suddenly passed away on September 28, Kelly was born in Richmond, B.C., the youngest of eight children. He was a proud graduate of UBC commerce and spent nearly his entire career at Chevron Canada, now Parkland Fuel Corporation. Kelly was proudest of his children, Raiden and Danika. Everything he did and all he accomplished was for them and because of them. Through his children, his legacy lives on. Kelly was involved for many years with the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association, at first as an enthusiastic parent of Raiden - he never missed a practice or a game - and in the past four years he served on the BMHA Executive Committee. Kelly also served on the executive board as president for Danika s synchronized swim club, Burnaby Caprice when Danika first began swimming. Kelly will be remembered for his diplomacy, intelligence, grace and dedication, all of which made him a natural leader - someone that people trusted to follow, and he didn t fail their expectations. Most of all Kelly will be remembered for his incredible sense of humour. Everyone who knew him can t help but to keep his memory alive by recalling a time that that they shared a laugh with Kelly - there will be no shortage of those memories for those who knew him. Kelly was predeceased by his father Howard and brother Bob, and leaves behind his wife Laura, their children Raiden and Danika, his mother Vivian, his siblings: Mike, Debbie, Gary, Richard, Ron and Steve and their families, his favourite cat Chester and the bane of his existence the family dog Zoey. Kelly will also be missed by Laura s extended family and many friends. Rest in Peace our beloved husband, father and friend.
12 th ANNUAL FEMALE REMEMBRANCE DAY TOURNAMENT Come Check It Out Nov th! The 12th annual Wildcat s Female Remembrance Day Tournament is sold out! Playing host to 52 teams with over 800 players, from Novice to Midget, it s our largest to date! Running Nov th at Canlan 8-Rinks, it ll be a weekend of great hockey! So stop by and check out all the action if you are in the area! PICTURE DAY IS COMING Set for Sunday, November 18 Our annual "Picture Day" for all BMHA teams and players will take place on Sunday, November 18 in the lobby at Kensington Arena. Team and individual player photos are being scheduled from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm that day. Every family will receive picture order information and their team's picture time from your Team Manager. Please have your order form completed and ready to hand in for picture day. Player pictures make a great Christmas gift, so completed picture orders will be ready and handed out in mid-december. And remember to SMILE! As well, Real Hip Clothing will be there if you re looking to purchase some Bulldog/ Wildcat apparel great as an early Christmas present! epact Ready and Time to Complete Player Information! BMHA is continuing to use epact, a highly secure online emergency network, to collect medical and emergency information for all our players. In place of filling out the paper version of the Hockey Canada Medical Information form, it will be gathered and stored electronically. Privacy and security are epact s top priority- their system actually meets or exceeds the same standards as most online banks. Please note that all information is stored in Canada under Canadian government privacy regulations (FOIPPA and PIPEDA).
For those who are new to BMHA and a reminder for returning players: Each player's family has been sent an invitation to use epact. Families then accept this invite and create their epact account. Following a series of steps, parent enters required details, such as medical history and emergency contacts no later than November 15th. Families then securely share this information with Burnaby Minor Hockey Association allowing coaches/managers/hcsp access to their information once the teams have been formed. This replaces the paper forms and emergency binders with the mobile App, ensuring secure anytime, anywhere access to the data - even without internet or cell service! Families can update epact anytime during the year, and we will automatically be alerted (e.g. add a new cell phone or new emergency contact, and we receive that update). If you have any questions regarding epact, please review the epact website or myself at riskmanager@burnabyminor.com. COACH TALK Coaching Clinic Certifications! The countdown is on! Over the last month I have fielded many s and calls regarding coach certification requirements and clinics. As well, there was a lot of confusion regarding the difference between Coach 1 or Coach 2 streams and a need for clearer clinic fee reimbursement process. To clarify, we need to follow BC Hockey guidelines for coaching clinic certification requirements and as such: If you are a new coach and you want to coach: Initiation Minor (H4) Novice Major (H4) ---- you need Coach 1 Intro to Coach Atom and above ---- you need Coach 2 Coach Level Please ensure you meet this certification requirement. Otherwise, you risk of being de-rostered come December. Thank you to all coaches who have taken required courses recently. I know and fully appreciate that you had better things to do then sit in a classroom on a weekend for a day and for some two days! We all appreciate your dedication and volunteerism! Reimbursement of Coaching Clinic Courses Now that you re out-of-pocket paying for coaching courses, how does BMHA repay you? BMHA will fully reimburse your fees once you have successfully been certified. All receipts (in pdf format) must be sent for processing to headcoach@burnabyminor.com. Coach 1 certification There is no post clinic work required for this certification. Please submit following for reimbursement: HU-Coach1/2 Online receipt Certificate for completion of HU Coach 1/2 Coach 1 Intro to Coach receipt
Coach 2 certification you will need to complete post clinic work before you are certified. Once you are certified, please submit following for reimbursement: HU-Coach 1/2 Online receipt Certificate for completion of HU Coach 1/2 Coach 2 Coach Level receipt o Post clinic work you are required to take what you have learned and apply it to your practices/games and document it. Once completed (usually early Jan/Feb), please send your completed workbook to headcoach@burnabyminor.com for verification. Coach Development 1 you will need to complete field evaluation before you are certified. Once you are certified, please submit following for reimbursement: Coach Development 1 receipt o NOTE: you will need to complete the following post clinic requirements to be certified: Written assignment (due within two weeks of the conclusion of your clinic or by December 15th of the clinic year, whichever occurs first) Field evaluation (coordinated by BC Hockey and completed by a BC Hockey designated evaluator) Making Ethical Decisions (online evaluation) - facilitated by the Coaching Association of Canada. More Info. NOTE: Reimbursement will only be approved once you have provided: 1. All required receipts as stated above 2. HCR has been updated to reflect your coach status change to certified (BC Hockey will initiate this update once you have satisfied all clinic requirements) Cheers, Peter Chau, BMHA Head Coach CATS CORNER RDT Thank You s! The 2018 Remembrance Day Tournament kicks off on Saturday November 10th. With 52 teams from Novice to Midget, and numerous teams wait-listed at every division, it is our largest tournament ever. Whether you re involved in the tournament or not, come down to 8-Rinks over the weekend to see (in addition to the competitive hockey of course) what makes the RDT such a great event that brings teams back year after year. Tremendous thanks and appreciation go out to our spectacular tournament committee who have put in countless volunteer hours to put it all together: Pearl Leung Joanne Lee Marcy McCabe Angela Brnjac Jessie Gill Jennifer Yamagata Gurdeep Kainth Dave Sydor Alicia Kok Echo Lee Sandra Knowler And speaking of tournaments, two Wildcats teams will be flying to Calgary later in November to participate in Wickfest - the Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival. Good luck to our PeeWee A1 and Midget C1 teams - we know both teams will represent the Wildcats and BMHA with distinction. Thanks, Lee Poizer - Director of Female Hockey
