The good fortune to be able to hire Angela McMahon, who served for two years as an assistant coach at UMass before becoming head coach at UConn for the previous two seasons, kept the momentum the Minutewomen had built over the last four years. McMahon recruited the junior and senior class having coached Jackie Lyons, Haley Smith and Nazy Kerr during their freshmen campaigns. That familiarity along with a solid corps of vetern leaders quickly turned UMass into a national name as the season got underway. Following a tough overtime win at Holy Cross to start the season, UMass peeled off five more wins including at No. 18 Boston University in the final seconds of regulation. That hot start put the Minuteowmen in the national spotlight. A battle of unbeatens narrowly slipped out of reach when #15 Albany edged UMass 10-8 on March 19. A loss to #2 Northwestern a week later stung as the Minutewomen headed into A-10 play. UMass three-point win at home vs. Temple (12-9) got things started on the right note. That also proved the closest game for the balance of the league schedule. UMass cruised through the league slate with a perfect 7-0 record going unbeaten in A-10 play for the first time in school history. The Minutewomen s unbeaten campaign was the fifth in A-10 history and the first from a team not named Temple. UMASS IN THE ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT In 11 appearances in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, UMass sports an 8-7 overall record. UMass made it to the Championship Game in 2000, 2003, 2008, 2009, and winning the Tournament title in 2000, 2009, and This will be the second time UMass and Duquesne have met in the A-10 Tournament. UMass has played Richmond five times; Temple four times; Virginia Tech twice; and La Salle, George Washington and Saint Joseph s once. UMass is 3-2 all-time against Richmond in the A-10 Tournament including the dramatic 10-9 overtime win in 2008 where UMass tied the game with one second left in regulations and last season s Championship Game. UMass has played four overtime games in its A-10 Tournament history posting a 4-0 record. Two of those OT wins were for the league championship titles. This is the second time UMass has entered the A-10 Tournament as the No. 1 Seed. In 2009, UMass was also the No. 1 seed en route to the A-10 Championship title. In 2000, UMass finished the season in a three-way tie for 1st, but were the No. 2 seed in the tournament. UMASS HAS HIGHEST RANKING SINCE 1988 For the school-record 9th straight week, UMass was ranked in the InsideLacrosse.com/deBeer Media Poll dropping to No. 14 in the April 25th poll after being ranked No. 13 on April 18th. UMass moved up two spots in the April 4 InsideLacrosse.com/ debeer Media Poll into a tie for 11th with Princeton. That is the highest ranking for UMass this season. It marked a school-record sixth consecutive week that the Minutewomen were ranked in a national poll. After defeating Marist on the road and losing at home to No. 2 Northwestern, UMass dropped one spot to No. 13 nationally on March 28. Despite falling to Albany in a top-15 battle of undefeated teams, UMass remained at No. 12 in the March 21 Media Poll. After a win over Stony Brook moved UMass to 6-0 to start the season, the Minutewomen moved up six spots in the March 14 Media Poll to No. 12. UMass highest ranking was in 1988 when the Minutewomen earned a No. 9 ranking in the fifth week of the season. UMass earned a No. 19 ranking in the InsideLacrosse.com/deBeer Media Poll on Feb. 28 after starting the season UMASS LACROSSE UMASS ONE OF FINAL NINE UNBEATENS UMass was one of 9 unbeaten teams left in the country among the 91 Division I women s lacrosse programs before the 10-8 loss to fellow undefeated No. 15 Albany on March 19. Of those 9, only four teams had unbeaten records of 6 games or more: UMass, Northwestern, Maryland, and Stanford. BEST START SINCE 1983 The 7-2 start for UMass was its best since going 8-1 in the first nine games of the 1983 season - that year the Minutewomen finished en route to an NCAA Tournament Semifinal appearance. UMass was a perfect 10-0 during the NCAA National Championship season of UMass best start ever was in 1979 when the squad was 15-0 before losing to Penn State in the USWLA National Title game (one of two precursors to the NCAA sponsoring women s lacrosse). UMass was also in 1978 before losing to Penn State in the USWLA Tournament. THE SERIES UMass has a 6-8 all-time record against Duquesne after the Minutewomen snapped a three-game losing skid against the Dukes earlier this spring. UMass now holds a 5-4 edge in the series over the last nine games. Duquesne defeated UMass 10-6 in the 2001 A-10 Semifinals hosted by Saint Joseph s. UMass has an all-time record against Temple having won the last three meetings. UMass and Temple teamed up to produce one of the greatest Atlantic 10 Championship games in the history of the conference. In 2000, UMass won it s first-ever league title 3-2 in overtime against the Owls. Against Richmond, UMass is 7-7 all-time after winning the last five meetings including last season s match-up in the A-10 Championship game. Five of the 14 meetings between the two teams have come in the A-10 Tournament with UMass holding a 3-2 edge. SCOUTING UMASS Jackie Lyons leads the UMass offense in her senior campaign after earning All-America and A-10 Offensive Player of the Year honors in Lyons scored 49 goals while assisting 20 last season and she has 133 goals and 78 assists for her UMass career. Also returning to the UMass offense are juniors Jesse O Donnell (64 goals, 18 assists), Danielle Pelletier (48 goals, 15 assists), and Nina Sarcona (45 goals, 16 assists). The UMass midfield is highlighted by returning senior Haley Smith who recorded 12 goals, 21 groundballs, and 12 caused turnovers last season. She is joined by junior Dayna Defliese who received Atlantic 10 All Conference Second Team honors, and finished last season with 5 goals, 22 GBs and a team high 24 CTs. Headlining the defense is returning senior Nazy Kerr who had 20 GBs and 8 CTs last season. She is accompanied by returning juniors Riley Perry(29 GBs and 14 CTs last season) who received Atlantic 10 All Conference First Team honors and Ali Houlis (Team leading 33 GBs, 16 CTs, and 7 goals last season). Katie Florence returns in goal for her junior year after starting all 20 games as a sophomore. Florence posted a goals against average, while having a.431 save percentage (153 saves) last season. The junior has a goals against average of with 452 saves, and a save percentage of.457 for her UMass career. LYONS MAKING MARK ON RECORD BOOK After earning A-10 Player of the Year honors and All-American accolades in 2010, Jackie Lyons has proven herself one of the top players in the country. This season she has the chance to rewrite the UMass record book. The senior ranks 3rd all-time in career goals (133), 2nd in assists (77), and is 3rd in points (211). She needs 8 points, 29 assists, and 37 goals to tie the school records. She is now one of three players all-time in program history to eclipse the 200-point barrier at UMass. Lyons is a two-time Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP and a two-time All-Conference First Team selection. In 6 career A-10 Tournament games, Lyons has produced 26 points on 16 goals and 10 assists.

3 GO WITH THE `FLO Katie Florence enters her third season as UMass starting goalie with a career record of 34-20, a goals-against-average of and a.457 save percentage. She ranks 3rd all-time at UMass with 452 saves and needs 48 more saves to reach 500 for her career. This year, Florence is having the best campaign of her career with a 8.33 goals-against-average, a.487 save percentage, and 113 saves. Entering the week, Florence ranked 12th nationally in save percentage, 10th in GAA, 47th in saves per game and 43rd in total saves. FERRIS ONE OF TOP ROOKIES IN NATION, A-10 Katie Ferris has proven herself to be one of the top rookies not only in the Atlantic 10, but in the entire country. The freshman leads the team in points (58) and in goals (47). She ranks 8th nationally in goals per game (3.36) and 12th in overall goals. She leads all freshmen nationally in goals per game, while leading the league in goals per game and points per game. HATS OFF TO YOU 10 different Minutewomen have posted hat tricks this season led by freshman Katie Ferris who has 10. Haley Smith and Nina Sarcona each have four, while Jackie Lyons has six this season. Lyons also has a team-best 15 multi-point games. ZEN-LIKE BALANCE Through 16 games, Katie Ferris, Jackie Lyons and Haley Smith have all reached the 30 goal mark of the season. 11 Minutewomen overall have double-digit point totals for the year. 17 different Minutewomen have at least one point on the year. That has translated into the UMass offense averaging goals per game entering the week which ranks 6th nationally and first in the Atlantic 10. DRAWING ATTENTION Winning the draw control battle has been a strength of UMass this year. The Minutewomen have won nearly 60 more draws than their opponents overall averaging per game. UMass has held the draw control advantage in 12 of 16 games this year including two games with over 20. As a team, UMass ranks 10th nationally. RECORD SETTING YEAR FOR OFFENSE UMass set a school-record for goals in a single season with 238 so far this season besting the previous record by 28 goals. The previous record is 210 set in UMass also set a school-record for points in a season (312). The previous record was 308 set back in one of the oldest team records to be broken. That leaves the team assist record of also set in as the oldest official record yet to be broken at UMass. OFFENSE SCORES 2ND MOST GOALS IN A GAME The 23 goals scored at Marist on March 22 was the most since scoring 22 against Northeastern in It was also the 2nd most all-time for a single game. The school record is 24 set at Williams in UMass 20 goals scored against Stony Brook comes in as the 4th most for a single game in program history. NO GPS NEEDED FOR ROAD WINS UMass posted a perfect 8-0 record on the road in the best since going 6-0 on the road during the 1982 National Championship Season. VS. ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT FIRST HALF SUCCESS Part of the reason for UMass success this year has been good starts to games. UMass is outscoring opponents 131-to-55 in the first half. The second half has been a bit closer with UMass leading 105-to-77. NO LET DOWNS WITH THE LEAD IN HAND UMass is 11-0 this season when leading at halftime and a perfect 9-0 when leading with 5 minutes left in the game. Twice this season, UMass was able to comeback when trailing or tied with 5 minutes to go. At #18 Boston University, UMass trailed 12-10, but were able to rally and win on a last second game-winner by Katie Ferris - her first career goal. At Holy Cross in the season opener, the game was tied 9-9 with 5 minutes to go before UMass won in overtime. UMASS TURNS UP DEFENSE IN A-10 Defense has been a hallmark of the UMass women s lacrosse program, but this season, the Minutewomen have turned up the intensity. For the season, UMass posted an 8.33 goalsagainst-average. In A-10 games, that number dropped to 6.14 goals-against. All told, UMass allowed teams to reach double digits six times out of 16 games and just once in 7 A-10 contests. UMASS RETURNS VETERAN TEAM IN 2011 While UMass has just three seniors on the 2011 roster, the Minutewomen are a deep team in terms of overall experience. Eight members of the team are juniors, while six are sophomores. All 11 upperclassmen have either been starters throughout their careers or have played significant roles on either side of the field. FOUR SCORE CORPS UMass returns its top four scorers from last season in Jackie Lyons, Jesse O Donnell, Danielle Pelletier and Nina Sarcona. Lyons posted 49 goals, while O Donnell was just behind with 38. Pelletier netted 24 scores, while Sarcona had 19. Combined the four-some accounted for 63% of UMass goals last year (130-of-207) and 183 of 275 total points (66.5%). UMASS PICKED TO 3-PEAT IN A-10 On the heels of back-to-back Atlantic 10 Championships, the UMass women s lacrosse team was picked to win its third in a row according to the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. The Minutewomen narrowly edged Richmond - last season s regular season champion - by one point. La Salle (3rd) and Temple (4th) also received 1st place votes, while Duquesne (31) was selected fifth followed by Saint Joseph s (23), George Washington (20) and St. Bonaventure (17). UMASS BUILDING UPON A-10 SUCCESS UMass is 22-6 in the Atlantic 10 over the last fours seasons (including 2011) which includes two A-10 Tournament Titles (2009, 2010), two regular-season title (2009, 2011) and one tournament runner-up finish (2008). In addition to the past two A-10 Titles, UMass also won the A-10 title in All-time, UMass is (.633) in the Atlantic 10 and 8-7 (.533) in the A-10 Tournament. UMass has the 2nd most regular-season wins behind Temple (67). MCGUIRK MAGIC UMass enters its fifth year playing at McGuirk Alumni Stadium and is all-time at the facility. UMass will play two games this spring at Garber Field which is the home of the men s lacrosse team and the field hockey team. The women s lacrosse team previously played there until UMASS LACROSSE FAMILIAR FACES RETURN TO SIDELINE With the departure of head coach Alexis Venechanos last summer, UMass was able to bring in two familiar faces to continue building up the program s recent success. Head coach Angela McMahon and associate head coach Sarah Albrecht each spent two years as part of the coaching staff during the 2007 and 2008 seasons recruiting several of the upperclassmen. Mc- Mahon then served as the head coach at Connecticut, while Albrecht was the top assistant at Harvard. UMASS SIGNS 10 FOR 2012 Head coach Angela McMahon announced in November the signing of 10 newcomers to National Letters of Intent for the 2012 season. The class includes six midfielders, two attacks, one defender and one goalie. The incoming class is made up of Ellie Bullitt (Darien, Conn.), Jessica Daut (Pleasanton, Calif.), Lauren Freeland (New Cannan, Conn.), Cassie Raglan (Peterborough, Ontario), Mia Rapolla (Gorham, Maine), Erin Riley (West Nyack, N.Y.), Meredith Swagart (Washington, D.C.), Amy Tiernan (Deferiet, N.Y.), Rachel Vallarelli (Hartsdale, N.Y.), and Morgan Walker (Glastonbury, Conn.). The 2012 freshman class is one of the strongest groups we have had in program history. They will add incredible depth to our midfield and outstanding talent in goal, said McMahon. These players truly embody what UMass Lacrosse is all about and we look forward to welcoming them on campus next fall. 4 VS. ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT Head Coach ANGELA McMAHON Head Coach First Season Northwestern 04 Angela McMahon was named the new University of Massachusetts women s lacrosse head coach as announced by Director of Athletics John McCutcheon on Friday, July 9, McMahon has served the previous two years as the head coach at the University of Connecticut and replaced Alexis Venechanos who accepted the head coaching job at Ohio State. A native of Weston, Mass., this will be McMahon s second stint with the Minutewomen lacrosse program after she served as associate head coach for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. We are excited to have Angela rejoin the UMass women s lacrosse program as our new head coach, said McCutcheon. She was an important piece in building the UMass program during her time here setting the stage for the last two Atlantic 10 titles and NCAA Tournament berth. The Minutewomen are coming off A-10 Championship titles in 2009 and In 2009, UMass also won the A- 10 regular season title and earned its first berth to the NCAA Tournament in 25 years. I am thrilled and honored to return to the University of Massachusetts. I would like to thank Athletic Director John McCutcheon and Associate Athletic Director Dan Markowski for giving me this amazing opportunity to lead the women s lacrosse program. I would also like to thank UConn Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway for my wonderful experience at Connecticut, said McMahon. Alexis did an amazing job of returning the program to the top of the Atlantic 10 and to again be a nationally recognized program. With my familiarity with the program, players, and departmental philosophy, I know we will continue to build upon the tradition of success Alexis and I began together four years ago. This will be McMahon s third head coaching job after also serving as the head coach at Division II Bentley in She joined UMass as associate head coach in 2007 during Venechanos first year with the program. McMahon, 28, posted a overall record and a 4-11 record in the Big East in two seasons at UConn after taking over as head coach prior to the 2009 campaign. In her first year, the Huskies went 3-13 after the program went 1-15 the season before her arrival. In 2010, McMahon guided UConn to its first winning season since 2007 with a 9-8 overall record. During her associate head coaching stint at UMass, McMahon was responsible for many of the day-to-day coaching and practice decisions along with organizing the Minutewomen s recruiting efforts, alumnae relations and scouting. She worked primarily with the attacks on offense. She played a crucial role in guiding UMass to the 2008 Atlantic 10 finals for the first time in five seasons, helping her earn a spot at the NCAA Women s Coaches Academy in December In addition to her coaching responsibilities with the Minutewomen, McMahon established and coordinated a partnership between the A-10 Conference and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, a charitable organization created to raising public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. She also directed all UMass camps, clinics and local tournaments. Prior to UMass, McMahon served as head coach of Bentley s women s lacrosse program during the 2006 season. While there, she guided the NCAA Division II Falcons to a 7-8 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Northeast 10 Conference. At Bentley, she also served as a member of the Division II North Regional Lacrosse Committee UMASS LACROSSE McMahon began her collegiate lacrosse career at UMass before transferring to Northwestern in 2001 to help rebuild a program that had been dormant for the previous 11 years. She spent three seasons with the Wildcats on attack where she finished her career with 44 goals and 23 assists. She was a two-time tri-captain of the squad that advanced to the 2004 NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since the program reclaimed varsity status in 2002 and helped build the foundation for each of Northwestern s four consecutive national titles. In her senior season, she earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, American Lacrosse Conference Academic Honors and the Northwestern Scholastic Achievement Award. Since 2002, McMahon has also worked as a counselor and administrator at a variety of lacrosse camps. During that time, she has instructed campers of all skill levels and helped with the organizational camp operations. In addition, she is the founder and CEO of Destination: Hawaii, a summer training trip to Hawaii for girls lacrosse players. McMahon graduated from Northwestern in 2004 with a degree in communication studies. She married Justin Serpone in the summer of 2009 and resides in Longmeadow, Mass.
