3 ST. JOHN S L ACROSSE REV. DONALD J. HARRINGTON, C.M. P R E S I D E N T, S T. J O H N S U N I V E R S I T Y Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. assumed the Presidency of St. John s University in 989. As the 5th President of one of the largest Catholic universities in the United States, he has provided leadership for an ambitious initiative that has positioned the institution as a leader in higher education for the st century. His vision has resulted in an extraordinary transformation of the University into a new St. John s, with enhanced facilities, expanded academic initiatives, and an increasing global presence. The vision has been enabled by Fulfilling the Dream, a capital campaign that ended in May 6, exceeding its goal and raising more than $7 million, the largest amount ever realized by a Catholic institution in New York State. New buildings include: St. Thomas More Church, the gift of alumnus John V. Brennan and his wife, Anita, which stands at the center of the Queens campus; DaSilva Hall, a state-of-the-art classroom building, which opened in September 4 on the Staten Island campus; and Taffner Field House, which is located adjacent to Lou Carnesecca Arena on the Queens campus and named for the late Donald and Eleanor Taffner. Most recently completed is the 7,-square-foot D Angelo Center, named for alumnus and Chair of the Board of Trustees Peter D Angelo and his wife, Peg. This impressive edifice, with its 44-foot tower, provides both state-of-theart classroom facilities as well as space for student activities and has become the hub for student life on the Queens campus. Academic initiatives include new degree programs on both the graduate and undergraduate levels and curricular changes that incorporate service learning and global studies into academic preparation. Distance learning courses and programs provide flexibility in scheduling and are expected to enable non-traditional students, especially working adults, to take advantage of the University s broad spectrum of offerings. While expanding its outreach through technology, the University has also increased its physical presence within the metropolitan area and beyond. During Father Harrington s tenure, the University has opened a Graduate Center in Rome, Italy (995), acquired an Extension Center in Oakdale at a 75acre site on the Great South Bay (999), gained a campus in Manhattan through consolidation with The College of Insurance (); and purchased facilities and acquired some academic programs formerly operated by St. Vincent s Catholic Medical Center in Queens (6). Through its unique global studies program, Discover the World, students have the opportunity to study on the University s campus in Rome as well as at a site opened by St. John s in Paris (8). Consistent with the mission of the University as a Vincentian institution, founded in the spirit of St. Vincent DePaul, the patron saint of charity, students studying abroad not only combine classroom instruction with cultural activities but engage in a unique component service activities designed to provide them with direct contact to the poor. Among the most transformative aspect of the University s impressive growth has been the transition to residence life. Six residence halls have been constructed on the Queens campus. The first three buildings, one of them named for John Cardinal O Connor, the beloved prelate of the Archdiocese of New York, were completed in August 999. Two more halls were opened in September, and one additional building, named for alumnus, benefactor, and former Chairman of Mellon Bank Corporation Thomas Donovan, was opened in September. Complementing the residence hall complex is a dining facility named for alumnus and former trustee William Montgoris, retired CFO of Bear, Stearns. The residence halls were supplemented in 5 by acquisition of two complexes on Union Turnpike that provide off-campus housing in apartment style facilities. A townhouse complex, completed in 8, was followed by signing of a longterm lease on a newly constructed apartment building close to the Queens campus. Apartmentstyle living accommodations are also available in buildings adjacent to the Staten Island campus. Strategic planning has also been a focus of Father Harrington s Presidency. The 8- plan, the University s third, focuses on Mission, Student Engagement, and Global Education. Among the goals are fostering study abroad among both graduate and undergraduate students by developing new sites and programs in countries throughout the globe as well as increasing the numbers of students who participate; providing students with opportunities for experiential education, through programs such as internships and service learning; and establishing the Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA), which, among other purposes, fosters collaboration between students and faculty to explore the causes of poverty and social injustice throughout the globe and develop solutions. In, cognizant of external challenges to higher education, particularly society s perception of an increasing gap between the cost of higher education and its perceived value, the University developed a Strategic Repositioning Plan, focused on articulating, measuring, and marketing the value of a St. John s education. Shortly after his ordination as a Vincentian priest in 97, Father Harrington was assigned to Niagara University, which, like St. John s, is sponsored by the Vincentians. He served as Instructor in Religious Studies, Director of Student Activities, and Executive Vice President before being named the institution s nd president at 8 years old, the youngest ever appointed. Father Harrington has amassed a striking record of community and professional activity. He served as a trustee of DePaul University, completed three terms as a trustee of Niagara University, two terms on the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU), and six years on the Board of Trustees of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, New York. He recently completed two terms on the Board of Directors of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) within the State of New York. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Fidelis Care, the New York State Catholic Health Plan and will assume the chairmanship of that Board in. Born in Brooklyn, Father Harrington attended Our Lady Help of Christians elementary School in that borough, where he was educated by the Sisters of Charity (Halifax). He graduated from Manhattan s Regis High School in 96. He then entered the junior college seminary of the Vincentian Fathers in Princeton, N.J., before completing his studies for the priesthood at Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Penn. He pursued graduate studies at the Catholic University of America and the University of Toronto. Father Harrington holds honorary doctorates from several colleges and universities in the United States, including Niagara University, St. Thomas Aquinas College, and The Catholic University of America and has also been honored by such international institutions as Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China; the American University in Rome, Italy; and Kokushikan University in Tokyo, Japan. He was awarded the honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by His Holiness Pope John Paul II in 989 and was named a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre in 999. He received the Order of Merit (Cavalieri) of the Republic of Italy in June and the Grand Ufficiale in October.

Trailing - with 5 seconds to play and Georgetown holding possession, the Red Storm rallied with two goals from Ryan Fitzgerald and Harry Kutner to force the extra period. Fitzgerald would connect once again in overtime to give the Red Storm a landmark victory that proved essential in qualifying for the first-ever BIG EAST lacrosse tournament. As dramatic as the Georgetown victory was, it was the win over then-no. Notre Dame in the BIG EAST semifinals that helped St. John s gain the attention of the national lacrosse community. In a nationally televised game on ESPNU, the Red Storm toppled the eventual national semifinalist, Fighting Irish, 8-7. It was the highest ranked opponent that a St. John s lacrosse team had ever defeated. St. John s took on six ranked programs during the year, which included eventual NCAA tournament quarterfinalists Syracuse and Notre Dame. The season was highlighted by a thrilling 9-8 victory over local, BIG EAST rival Rutgers at the Konica Minolta Big City Classic held at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Prior to St. John s, Paccione spent a season at Stony Brook University, where he worked primarily with both the face-off unit and wing players. He also tutored the man-up personnel, which finished in the top in the country for shooting percentage. From 4-5, Paccione worked as an assistant to Yale head coach Andy Shay, where his primary responsibilities included face-off and wing play personnel. During his two-season tenure with the Bulldogs, the face-off unit finished with one of the nation s best winning percentages at the X (.66). Paccione played lacrosse for the University of Massachusetts and graduated in with a bachelor of science degree in sports management. He led the Minutemen to two ECAC Championships in and, and the NCAA Quarterfinals in. In, Paccione also earned first team All-ECAC honors and the UMass offensive Most Valuable Player award when he recorded 4 goals and assists for 47 points, and won 86-of-56 face-offs for a.548 winning percentage. After graduating from UMass, Paccione played for the New York Saints of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He was also selected by the Long Island Lizards as the th overall pick in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) draft. He played for the Lizards from - and helped the team win the MLL Championship in. In 4, Paccione played for the Philadelphia Barrage, another squad that won the MLL Championship. The following season, Paccione suited up for the Lizards again, and the team advanced to the MLL Championship game. In 6, Paccione played for the Chicago Machine. Paccione and his wife, Katie, a physical education teacher in Farmingdale, N.Y., reside in Wantagh, N.Y. The couple was married in August 7 and gave birth to a son, Devin, in June 8. The couple welcomed a daughter, Madison Lynn, in September. DOM DENAPOLI Assistant Coach Second Season St. John s Dom DeNapoli enters his second season as an assistant coach with St. John s University. DeNapoli serves as the assistant coach responsible for the development of the team s faceoff unit. He also handles all game day substitutions and provides support on the offensive and defensive ends. DeNapoli s first season with the Red Storm was the most successful one in program history as the team finished the season with an 8-7 record and a berth in the inaugural BIG EAST Championship game. DeNapoli was tasked with leading a Red Storm faceoff unit that returned the school s all-time leader in faceoff wins Jordan Rothman. St. John s would finish above 5 percent (.5) on faceoff win percentage on the year which ranked 9th in the NCAA. The two main contributors to the unit, Rothman and long stick midfielder Dillon Ayers, ended the season ranked one-two in the BIG EAST for groundballs per game. Rothman was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice with a -of-, seven groundball performance against Villanova and a 4-of-9 week at the X that was key in helping St. John s earn a pair of close victories against Stony Brook and Rutgers. This is DeNapoli s first stint at collegiate coaching following his playing career at St. John s. DeNapoli, who donned the red and white from 6-9, was one of the more successful long pole players in Red Storm history. After ranking in the top in groundballs per game his sophomore and junior seasons, DeNapoli led all of NCAA Division I lacrosse with 8.5 groundballs per game as a senior. DeNapoli s 58 career groundballs is the third highest total in St. John s lacrosse history. The Red Storm coaching staff looks to DeNapoli s experience as a player for help developing the team s face-off unit. As a player, DeNapoli handled most of St. John s face-offs and ended his career with wins, third most in school history. For his career DeNapoli was out of 459 on draws, giving him a.479 win percentage. DeNapoli brings plenty of leadership experience to the coaching staff having served as captain of the 9 St. John s squad. That year s team opened the season 4- and moved to as high as No. 4 in the USILA Coaches Poll. In his final collegiate game, DeNapoli recorded a hat trick against eventual national semi-finalist Duke University. After the season, DeNapoli represented St. John s at the USILA North-South game where he registered a goal, seven groundballs and eight face-off wins for his victorious North squad. That December DeNapoli was selected by the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse in the Supplemental Draft. DeNapoli has served on the Red Storm coaching staff before, as he spent as a volunteer assistant for the team. St. John s went 5-9 during DeNapoli s season as a volunteer assistant. Originally hailing from nearby Hewlett, N.Y., DeNapoli starred in lacrosse at Hewlett High School. His impressive senior season was highlighted by conference and county titles as well as honorable mention All-American recognition. DeNapoli also lettered in football and indoor track during his high school career. 8
