Top Story: Despite a disheartening 5-0 shutout on Friday night against #18 Quinnipiac, RMU bounced back Saturday and exploded with eight goals as they handed the Bobcats their first loss of the season. After the eventful and roller coaster style series against Quinnipiac, the Colonials immediately jump into opening conference action against the unbeaten Beavers of Bemidji State. For the second weekend in a row, the Colonials will look to take down a ranked and undefeated squad, but this time they must do it on the road. Longpre Offensive POTW: Junior forward Nathan Longpre of the Robert Morris University men s hockey team was honored Monday by College Hockey America (CHA) for his outstanding play over the past weekend. After scoring four goals and adding an assist in RMU s win over #18 Quinnipiac, Longpre was named CHA Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time of his career. On Saturday night, Longpre had a record setting game, scoring the most goals (4) and tying for most points (5) in a single-game by a RMU player. His four goal performance also marked his first career hat trick. Longpre now sits second on the CHA scoring leader board with four goals and five assists for a total of nine points. Last season, Longpre earned CHA Offensive Player of the Week recognition three times and was also named to the CHA All-First Team. A Pittsburgh Penguins 2009 Camp Invitee, he has totaled 21 goals and 51 assists in his 69 game career at Robert Morris. Scouting the Beavers: After slipping past the Colonials 3-2 in overtime in last year s CHA Championship Game, the Beavers went on to become the first #16 seed to ever reach the Frozen Four. Picking up right where they left off, BSU has yet to lose in their opening six contests. However last weekend, the Beavers found themselves struggling to take down the UAH Chargers when they opened CHA play. Both nights, the Beavers needed an overtime period to snatch close 2-1 wins from the Chargers. Lead by the scoring of CHA Preseason Player of the Year, Matt Read, BSU has picked up two game winning scores from the junior forward. Read has totaled five goals and five assists this season to put him at the top of the CHA scoring leader board. Sophomore defenseman, Brad Hunt is also seeing offensive success has he has tallied one goal and six assists. Sophomore netminder, Dan Bakala, has also been a large part of the Beavers success so far this year. Bakala is and has given up just nine opponent goals. He also boasts a.933 save percentage and was named CHA Defensive Player of the Year this past week. Under the direction of ninth year head coach Tom Serratore, the Beavers have compiled a record. Struggles in the Second: The Colonial defensive unit has notably allowed more goals in the second period than any other. Out of the 26 total scores that Robert Morris has given up, 11 of those goals have come in the second period. So far this season, RMU opponents have tallied six goals in the first period and eight in the third period. The Colonials also allowed a lone goal in OT to Ferris State. Quotes for the Notes - A word with Coach Schooley On last weekend s home action vs. #18 Quinnipiac... What an up and down weekend? We played soft, scared and lost all the one on one battles on Friday only to do the complete opposite on Saturday. We got great performances from Nathan Longpre and Eric Levine but also got a great team effort. Dave Cowan and Brock Meadows were excellent in killing 5 Quinnipiac Power Plays in the second period Saturday. On opening conference play against #11 Bemidji State... Bemidji has been on a roll again this year. They have built on the excitement of going to the Frozen Four by starting out very strong. They play hard, fast and are very good defensively. Tom Serratore has them playing their systems very well and they have got huge starts from Matt Read, Brad Hunt and Dan Bakkula. This will be an exciting challenge in a good hockey environment. CHA Preseason Honors: Juniors Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the Preseason All-CHA team after break-out seasons in Longpre finished the season second in the CHA with 12 goals and 29 assists behind now RMU alum, Chris Margott. Urban returns for the 2009 campaign after notching four goals and 23 assists last season as one of the top offense producing defenseman in the conference. New Faces: For the season, Robert Morris has added two new coaches to the Colonial staff. Matt Nicholson and Mark Workman will both bring a variety of playing, coaching and recruiting experience to the program. Nicholson, played four years at Colgate University before a professional career in the Central Hockey League (CHL). For the last two years, he has worked at Div. III Adrian College while helping the Bulldogs to a record. Also joining Nicholson is Workman who graduated from St. Scholastica. Former forward, Kyle Burton, will also be working for RMU hockey in new capacity this season. Flash Forward: Nathan Longpre, now a junior, had a break out year in He was honored as a CHA First Team selection and finished the regular season ranked 8th nationally for most assists. Also a 2009 NHL Pittsburgh Penguins Camp Invitee, the forward should continue to be one of the biggest scoring threats in the CHA. Fellow junior, Chris Kushneriuk will also return as one of the Colonial s top forwards. A transfer from Wayne State University in 2008, Kushneriuk had a stellar second half in 2009 as he posted 15 points in 21 games and won a CHA Offensive Player of the Week award. Dominating Defense: The Colonials only lost two defensemen to graduation at the end of With a very solid defensive core returning, Schooley believes the defense will be one of the strongest parts of the Colonial s game during the season. Junior blueliner, Denny Urban, has a proven track record of being both a defensive and offensive threat. Last season, he posted the most points out of all defenseman in the CHA. With four goals and 23 assists, he earned three CHA Defensive Player of the Week honors and was also named to the All-CHA First team. Outstanding Ostergard: A huge part of the Colonials success late in was now sophomore goaltender, Brooks Ostergard. Ostergard earned his first career win with a shutout victory over Bemidji State in mid-february. From that point on, Ostergard led the Colonials on a seven game unbeaten streak and into the CHA Finals. 4 Head Coach Derek Schooley Head coach Derek Schooley believes that his team is ready to regularly compete with other top teams around the nation as his previous teams have proved. Schooley s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athletics with some major upsets in the past three seasons. In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off 2nd ranked Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In , Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Ak with an upset of four time national champion and 8th ranked Boston University. The sixth year head coach enters the season with a record in six seasons at Robert Morris. Schooley, 38, has been a college hockey coach for eleven seasons. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris History. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent four years at the Air Force Academy as an Assistant Coach before spending one season at Air Force as Associate Head Coach. Schooley spent the recruiting the inaugural Colonials Hockey Team. During the campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to the eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley s student-athlete s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Ostergard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st team; Chris Margott 2nd team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All Rookie Team). Schooley has coached fourteen players who have ascended from the program into professional hockey, as Kurt Wright (2006), Doug Conley (2007), Aaron Clarke (2007) and Joey Olson (2007) signed contracts in 2006 and 2007, while Sean Berkstresser, Tom Biondich, Joel Gasper, Chris Kaufman, Rob Cowan, Logan Bittle, Christian Boucher, Brett Hopfe, Jeff Gilbert and Ryan Cruthers joined them in signing professional hockey contracts after the campaign. In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an overall record. Many people thought that anything other than a zero in the win column that season would be a surprise for the first-year team. However, Schooley and his staff would prove college hockey wrong as the Colonials won their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colonials fourth place CHA finish included wins at Schooley s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA), Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals. Once again, the Colonials placed a member on the CHA All Rookie Team (Chris Margott). After two successful seasons getting the program started, Schooley led his team to a overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in while placing their first member on a CHA all league team as Aaron Clarke was named 2nd Team All League. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime. RMU defeated Bemidji State, 7-5, in the CHA Tournament semifinals. While at Air Force, Schooley coached a defensive unit that broke the school record for goals against average in two of his last four seasons. The team s goals against average of 2.91 in broke the record of 3.18 set a year earlier. Along with leading the defense at Air Force, Schooley assisted with nationwide recruiting efforts. Prior to Air Force, Schooley spent a year as an assistant coach at Cornell during the season. He started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. 6 Last Time Out - W, 8-5 #18 Quinnipiac v. Robert Morris Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 Lead by both record setting offensive and defensive performances, the Colonials exploded past the Bobcats to hand them their first loss of the year with the 8-5 win. It was the Bobcats who recorded the opening core of the night as Zach Davies notched his first of the year to take the 1-0 lead. But seven minutes later, Nathan Longpre netted his first of the evening to deadlock the game at one. Chris Kushneriuk and Ron Cramer both recorded assists on Longpre s first of the 2009 season. Longpre connected again just one minute later on a power play to give the Colonials a 2-1 advantage and their first lead of the weekend at the 13:24 mark of the first period. Kushneriuk once again added an assist while Furman South earned the second helper.. But the RMU lead was short lived as Scott Zurevinski hit a shot past Colonial netminder Eric Levine to even the score once more and send the game into the first intermission with the game tied at two. However, the Robert Morris offense took over in the second period when knocked the puck past the Bobcat goalie for his second goal of the year on a power play. Kushneriuk s goal, scored 53 seconds into the second, allowed Trevor Lewis and Denny Urban to pick up assists. Just minutes later, Longpre would record his first career hat trick to give the Colonials a 4-2 lead at the 7:38 mark. Kushneriuk assisted for the fourth time during the contest while Zach Hervato nabbed his first helper of the night. At 12:42 of the second period, Longpre would set a new Colonial record as he scored his fourth goal of the night from Cullen Lundholm. Longpre s goal then extended the RMU lead to 5-2. But Robert Morris had not seen the end of Quinnipiac. Twenty-four seconds into the third, the Bobcats then notched their third goal thanks to a power play score from Eric Lampe. Still holding on to a 5-3 edge, Cramer lit the lamp for the sixth time with assists from Brandon Blandina and Lundhilm. Two minutes after Cramer s goal, senior J.C. Velasquez put the biscuit in the basket for his first tally of the year. The score, which gave RMU a 7-3 lead, featured assists from Tom Brooks and Lundholm. Still unwilling to relent, Quinnipiac recorded two more goals just a minute apart in the third period to climb back within two and make the score, 7-5, still in favor of Robert Morris. The Colonials finally sealed the win with two seconds left in the contest thanks to Velasquez s empty net goal. Levine made 58 saves in the RMU triumph, setting a new single-game record for stops by a Colonial goaltender. Longpre also set new records of his own, scoring the most goals (4) and tying for most points (5) in a single-game by a RMU player Outlook After a strong finish to the season, the Robert Morris University men s ice hockey team hopes to take up exactly where they left off the top. The Colonials concluded their last campaign with seven straight wins or ties, the second longest unbeaten streak in Division I college hockey in With a stunning 2-1 victory in the College Hockey America (CHA) Semifinals over Niagara, Robert Morris made its second appearance in the CHA Championship game against Bemidji State. After dropping the heartbreaking overtime decision to the eventual Frozen Four Cinderella, RMU is hungry to finally win its first conference championship. Hoping to build on experience, head coach Derek Schooley and his Colonials plan to close out their final season in College Hockey America as a victorious one. For the season, the Colonials return four All-CHA players, and 18 letterwinners. The group of 12 forwards, five defensemen and one goaltender will need to take their experience and continue their ascent to the top of the CHA. The last year of the CHA should be one of the most competitive years in the history of College Hockey America, said Schooley. Every team has high end talent coming back as well as a good core of developing players.
