3 University of head Connecticut coach bruce marshall Bruce Marshall 24th Season Connecticut 85 defeated American International, 5-2, on eb. 23, becoming the first hockey coach in UConn history to reach the 200 mark. Marshall became only the second hockey coach in UConn history to reach the 100 win plateau (John Chapman who coached Connecticut from compiled a record). After posting a record in its first year as a ivision I team in , the season added a 19-1 record. In UConn s second season as a ivision I program in 2000, and as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Marshall and the Huskies earned their first-ever conference championship in a victory over Iona in the 2000 Easton/MAAC Championship game. Bruce Marshall enters his 24th season as head coach of the UConn men s hockey program. The Huskies had a resurgent season in , reaching the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals for the first time since and finishing with eight more wins than the year before at UConn nearly doubled its offensive output from a year ago, scoring over three goals per game. Marshall put together a schedule that saw Connecticut face three opponents in the first four games of the season that were ranked in the top-10 at some point in UConn opened the season with 3-3 ties against No. 7 Maine and No. 10 Union. Marshall celebrated a personal milestone in as he recorded his 300th career victory when the Huskies defeated Mercyhurst, 3-2, in overtime on ebruary 27, Marshall led freshman Alex erke to the 2010 Atlantic Hockey Association All-Rookie Team in He also guided four players to the 2010 AHA All-Academic Team. Bruce and Kathy Marshall Since becoming a ivision-i program in 1998, Marshall has led his squads to a MAAC Championship game, a trio of semifinals and a trio of quarterfinals in the postseason conference tournament. The Huskies have made it into the Atlantic Hockey postseason every year since the season. In , the Huskies finished at 1-2, marking their best season in the AHA. UConn earned the third seed in the conference tournament and hosted Mercyhurst in the quarterfinal match-up. Prior to the Huskies -I status, Marshall s teams produced eight ECAC East tournament berths, four ECAC semifinals and one ECAC championship appearance. In the 28 seasons prior to Marshall s current span as head coach, UConn posted only three seasons with 15 or more wins with 16 wins in being the single-season best. In Marshall s 22 seasons, UConn has averaged 13.7 wins per season and has seen 18 seasons with 10 or more wins, 10 seasons of 15 or more wins and two seasons with 20 or more wins. uring Marshall s tenure as head coach of UConn s ice hockey program, the Huskies have produced seven All-Americans, 24 all-conference members, five Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team selections and a MAAC efensive Rookie of the Year (The MAAC formed in ). In addition, their first ever conference Player of the Year came in the season as Tim Olsen received the Atlantic Hockey honor. According to the NCAA record books, Marshall ranks tied for 11th alltime in victories amongst the active coaches in ivision I with his 301 victories. Marshall coached his 500th-career game on Jan. 22, 2005 at Yale and won his 250th game at UConn on ecember 8, 2005 as the Huskies defeated Sacred Heart on the Pioneers home ice. He hit the 200 career win mark during the season when the Huskies or his accomplishments as UConn s hockey coach, Marshall has been recognized by his peers in earning several honors. He won the Edward Jeremiah College ivision National Coach of the Year Award and was named the ECAC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the season. In ebruary of 1993, Marshall was named to the East squad coaching staff for the 1993 Shrine East-West College Hockey Classic. The staff consisted of one coach from ivision I, II and III schools. It was the first honor of its kind to be bestowed upon a Connecticut hockey coach. A 1985 Connecticut graduate, Marshall became only the third head coach in UConn ice hockey history when he took over prior to the season, replacing seven-year coach Ben Kirtland. Prior to Kirtland, John Chapman served as Connecticut head coach for 21 years. Marshall was a four-year letterwinner in the UConn ice hockey program. He played in 94 career games, and as a senior, Marshall was co-captain of the squad that finished with a record and became the first Connecticut ice hockey team to make the ECAC playoffs. He received his bachelor of science degree in physical education from Connecticut in May of After graduation, Marshall served as assistant ice hockey coach at his alma mater for one season. He later directed the varsity hockey program at Worcester (Mass.) Academy for two years while employed in private industry. Marshall s vision and hockey expertise make him instrumental in helping with operations of the Mark Edward reitas Ice orum. Marshall also serves as a staff member for numerous clinics and camps in the area, and as the irector of Connecticut Hockey Experience. Marshall has spent several years as a key contributor to the New England istrict of USA Hockey. Marshall previously coached at the National level, assisting with the Select Teams at the the USA Hockey estival in St. Cloud, Minn. The Select Teams are part of the USA Hockey Olympic evelopment program. Also in St. Cloud, Marshall coached the USA Hockey Select 17 s to a gold medal at the estival in the summer of Marshall served as Vice President of the American Hockey Coaches Association for three years in a term ending in He has rejoined the AHCA in 2009 as Vice President for another three-year term. He has also served on its Board of irectors for the AHCA for seven years from In 2008, Marshall also had the privilege of being chosen for the selection committee of the Hobey Baker award. Marshall, a native of West Boylston, Mass., now resides in Storrs, Conn., with his wife Kathy and four children, Matthew (15), Mollie (13), Marisa (11) and Marikate (7). 5 University of Connecticut assistant coaches avid Berard begins his first season at the University of Connecticut with 19 years of collegiate hockey experience, including 15 with Providence College of Hockey East. avid Berard Assistant Coach irst Season Providence 92 Widely respected throughout college hockey, Berard had a variety of roles for the riars over the years. rom a coaching perspective, he directed skill development sessions for forwards and defensemen and worked extensively with riar goaltenders. or seven seasons, he also coordinated and directed the penalty killing strategy. He also led opponent scouting meetings, developed scouting reports and oversaw the implementation and use of video technology for the program. Administratively, Berard served as the staff liaison for the Office of Academic Services, which monitored the academic progress of riar Hockey players. In addition, Berard also served as the recruiting coordinator for the riars from , as well as, Associate from He was instrumental in bringing a number of talented players to Providence. uring his tenure, Berard recruited three players named to the AHCA/JOA University ivision All-American Team, one player voted to the TE/CoSIA ivision I Academic All-American Team, seven players selected to the Hockey East All-Star Team and five players chosen for the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Additionally, Berard recruited 21 players that were selected in the NHL Entry raft. He also recruited five players who signed NHL contracts and coached ten players who have played in the National Hockey League. urthermore, two of Berard s recruits represented the United States at the IIH World Under-20 Championships. Berard returned to Providence College prior to the start of the season after serving as the top assistant for two years at Lake Superior State University of the CCHA. At Lake Superior, Berard served as recruiting coordinator for, Scott Borek. Berard began his coaching career at Colby College during the season. After two successful rebuilding seasons, Berard returned to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach to then first-year, Paul Pooley. In his first two years at Providence, the riars made consecutive trips to the Hockey East Championship ame, finishing runner-up in 1995 and winning the championship in or their efforts, the riars earned an automatic berth to the 1996 NCAA Tournament. In , Berard helped guide the riars to a second-place finish, the best Hockey East Regular Season finish in program history. They also earned a berth in the Hockey East Championship ame and an at-large bid to the 2001 NCAA Tournament. uring the past 17 years, Berard has been heavily involved in player development for USA Hockey at the national, district and local levels. In addition to presenting at many coaching education program clinics, he has coached at numerous USA Hockey National Select estivals and New England Player evelopment Camps. rom , Berard served as the irector of Player evelopment for the New England istrict. In the summer of 2004, Berard served as an assistant coach for the USA Hockey Under-17 Select Team, which won the silver medal at the ive Nations Tournament in Halle a.d. Saale, ermany. Most recently, Berard was named as a coach for the USA Hockey - Warren Strelow National Team oaltending Program, a position he has held since A former goaltender in his playing days at Providence College, Berard was a member of one of the most successful classes to wear a riar uniform, amassing a total of 87 wins over their four-year career. Berard was a member of three teams that reached the Hockey East Championship Tournament Semi-inals and two teams that qualified for the NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament. Berard graduated from PC in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science egree in Business Marketing. He currently resides in East reenwich, RI with his wife, Lynne, and their sons, Brett and Brady. ormer Assistant Coaches Under Marshall and What They Are Saying... Chris Potter Assistant Coach Wesleyan Having the opportunity to return to the school where you played and coach was a great experience. I had the opportunity to continue my education and see if coaching was a profession I wanted to pursue. Coach Marshall allowed me to get a strong sense of what recruiting, coaching and all the aspects of the job would entail. Thirteen years later and it was the stepping stone to where I am today. Paul Pearl Assistant Coach Holy Cross I really enjoyed my time at Connecticut. We had some great success and the players were some of the most talented that I have had the opportunity to coach. Bruce runs an excellent program and I consider myself lucky to have worked for him. 6 University assistant coaches of Connecticut Rich McKenna Assistant Coach irst Season Castelton State 07 ormer Assistant Coaches Under Marshall and What They Are Saying... lenn Stewart Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Merrimack Rich McKenna begins his first season with UConn after spending the previous three at Wesleyan under former UConn assistant Chris Potter. He is a 2007 graduate of Castleton State College where he received his B.S. with a concentration in marketing. At Castleton, he was a two-year member of the men s varsity ice hockey team, receiving both the Unsung Hero Award and Coaches Award while skating for the Spartans. Prior to his time at Castleton, McKenna skated for two years with the Vikings of Hudson Valley Community College. McKenna got his first taste of collegiate coaching in as an assistant coach at Castleton State College while helping to manage the Spartans home arena as well. I appreciate the opportunity that Coach Marshall gave me to help further both my studies and coaching career. While at the university, I had the opportunity to earn my Master s egree while learning what it takes to be a great coach. Working at UConn was an amazing opportunity where I had a lot of fun and met some great people. I can t thank Bruce enough for the time he put in working with me and the opportunity that he gave me. Brian Meisner Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Alaska-airbanks Working with Coach Marshall at the University of Connecticut provided me the opportunity to become a better coach in a lot of different ways. I had the chance to really make an impact with the program not only in recruiting, but especially in coaching the team. Coach Marshall lets you do what you do best and implements it into the Husky environment. I always felt a part of what we were doing and that experience gave me confidence and growth as I have embarked on my career in college hockey. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Coach Marshall and the University of Connecticut. I came to UConn after coaching three years at Yale into a program where the players were respectful, eager to learn and hard working. So, I couldn t help but enjoy my time here. We were successful during the years I was there winning the MAAC Championship. rom a coaching perspective, Coach Marshall gave me a lot of responsibility during practices and games and his trust in me made me a better coach.
