2 Rentschl UConn will face AHA foe and in-state rival Sacred Heart on February 13 at 1:00 p.m. to highlight the outdoor extravaganza. The 10-day Whalers Hockey Fest could include as many as 20 outdoor games between professional, college, prep school and high school teams at Rentschler Field. It s very fitting that the UConn men s ice hockey program is involved in the Whalers Hockey Fest, said Husky head coach Bruce Marshall. We just celebrated the 50th anniversary of our program and many of the early games of our team were played outdoors. In addition, Todd Krygier, one of our program s most prominent alumni, played for the Whalers for two seasons. We are hoping that the success and exposure that Rentschler Field has provided for our football team will do the same that night for our men s hockey team.

8 UNIVERSITY HEAD COACH BRUCE MARSHALL OF CONNECTICUT Bruce Marshall enters his 23rd season as head coach of the UConn men s hockey program. Marshall celebrated a personal milestone in as he recorded his 300th career victory when the Huskies defeated Mercyhurst, 3-2, in overtime on February 27, Marshall led freshman Alex Gerke to the 2010 Atlantic Hockey Association All- Rookie Team in He also guided four players to the 2010 AHA All-Academic Team. Bruce and Kathy Marshall Bruce Marshall Head Coach 23rd Season Connecticut 85 Since becoming a Division-I program in 1998, Marshall led his squads to a MAAC Championship game, a pair of semifi nals and a trio of quarterfi nals in the postseason conference tournament. The Huskies have made it into the Atlantic Hockey postseason every year since the season. In , the Huskies fi nished at , marking their best season in the AHA. UConn earned the third seed in the conference tournament and hosted Mercyhurst in the quarterfi nal match-up. Prior to the Huskies D-I status, Marshall s teams produced eight ECAC East tournament berths, four ECAC semifi nals and one ECAC championship appearance. In the 28 seasons prior to Marshall s current span as head coach, UConn posted only three seasons with 15 or more wins with 16 wins in being the single-season best. In Marshall s 22 seasons, UConn has averaged 13.7 wins per season and has seen 18 seasons with 10 or more wins, 10 seasons of 15 or more wins and two seasons with 20 or more wins. During Marshall s tenure as head coach of UConn s ice hockey program, the Huskies have produced seven All-Americans, 24 all-conference members, fi ve Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team selections and a MAAC Defensive Rookie of the Year (The MAAC formed in ). In addition, their fi rst ever conference Player of the Year came in the season as Tim Olsen received the Atlantic Hockey honor. According to the NCAA record books, Marshall ranks tied for 11th alltime in victories amongst the active coaches in Division I with his 301 victories. Marshall coached his 500th-career game on Jan. 22, 2005 at Yale and won his 250th game at UConn on December 8, 2005 as the Huskies defeated Sacred Heart on the Pioneers home ice. He hit the 200 career win mark during the season when the Huskies defeated American International, 5-2, on Feb. 23, becoming the fi rst hockey coach in UConn history to reach the 200 mark. Marshall became only the second hockey coach in UConn history to reach the 100 win plateau (John Chapman who coached Connecticut from compiled a record). After posting a record in its fi rst year as a Division I team in , the season added a record. In UConn s second season as a Division I program in 2000, and as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Marshall and the Huskies earned their fi rst-ever conference championship in a 6-1 victory over Iona in the 2000 Easton/MAAC Championship game. For his accomplishments as UConn s hockey coach, Marshall has been recognized by his peers in earning several honors. He won the Edward Jeremiah College Division National Coach of the Year Award and was named the ECAC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the season. In February of 1993, Marshall was named to the East squad coaching staff for the 1993 Shrine East-West College Hockey Classic. The staff consisted of one coach from Division I, II and III schools. It was the fi rst honor of its kind to be bestowed upon a Connecticut hockey coach. A 1985 Connecticut graduate, Marshall became only the third head coach in UConn ice hockey history when he took over prior to the season, replacing seven-year coach Ben Kirtland. Prior to Kirtland, John Chapman served as Connecticut head coach for 21 years. Marshall was a four-year letterwinner in the UConn ice hockey program. He played in 94 career games, and as a senior, Marshall was co-captain of the squad that fi nished with a record and became the fi rst Connecticut ice hockey team to make the ECAC playoffs. He received his bachelor of science degree in physical education from Connecticut in May of After graduation, Marshall served as assistant ice hockey coach at his alma mater for one season. He later directed the varsity hockey program at Worcester (Mass.) Academy for two years while employed in private industry. Marshall s vision and hockey expertise make him instrumental in helping with operations of the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. Marshall also serves as a staff member for numerous clinics and camps in the area, and as the Director of Connecticut Hockey Experience. Marshall has spent several years as a key contributor to the New England District of USA Hockey. Marshall previously coached at the National level, assisting with the Select Teams at the the USA Hockey Festival in St. Cloud, Minn. The Select Teams are part of the USA Hockey Olympic Development program. Also in St. Cloud, Marshall coached the USA Hockey Select 17 s to a gold medal at the Festival in the summer of Marshall served as Vice President of the American Hockey Coaches Association for three years in a term ending in He has rejoined the AHCA in 2009 as Vice President for another three-year term. He has also served on its Board of Directors for the AHCA for seven years from In 2008, Marshall also had the privilege of being chosen for the selection committee of the Hobey Baker award. Marshall, a native of West Boylston, Mass., now resides in Storrs, Conn., with his wife Kathy and four children, Matthew (14), Mollie (12), Marisa (10) and Marikate (6). 10 UNIVERSITY ASSISTANT COACHES OF CONNECTICUT Joe Dumais Assistant Coach Third Season Quinnipiac 06 Josh Robinson Assistant Coach First Season Salem State 06 Joe Dumais, a graduate of Quinnipiac University, enters his third year as an assistant coach for Connecticut. Dumais played at Quinnipiac from where he graduated with a bachelor s degree in sociology. As a member of the Bobcats, he was named team captain during his senior season. He received numerous awards and was a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. He also coached in several hockey clinics and schools throughout the New England area while at Quinnipiac. After graduation, Dumais attended Ohio University where he earned a master s of science in recreation and sport sciences with a focus on coaching education. Also during his year at Ohio, Dumais served as an assistant coach for its men s ice hockey team. Dumais gained valuable experience after graduation in June 2007 as he was an assistant coach of the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, a member of the North American Hockey League, Tier II Junior A. He also was the head coach of the Phantom Fireworks Midget AAA team. With the Phantom Fireworks, Dumais took on the role of head recruiter, organized, managed the team budget and travel schedule and helped to recruit the entire team for the season. During this year, the Phantom Fireworks were named Ohio State Champions, Mid-American Champions and took part in the national tournament. Dumais played with the Columbia Inferno from February to May of The Inferno is affi liated with the Toronto Maple Leafs and a member of the East Coast Hockey League. Josh Robinson, a native of Spokane, Wash., comes to Connecticut after a two-year stint with the Colby College Mules. At Colby, Robinson helped to nearly double the win total from to The Mules fi nished the season with an record. Robinson has experience in the Atlantic Hockey Association as he was a member of the Bentley College coaching staff during the campaign. Robinson has also spent time as a coach and an evaluator at the USA Hockey New England District Development Camps in Prior to his coaching career, Robinson competed at Salem State College in Salem, Mass. from Robinson continued his playing career after Salem State, attending training camp with the Muskegon Fury of the United Hockey League in Muskego, Mich. in He spent the 2006 regular season with the Jacksonville Barracudas of the Southern Professional Hockey League. Robinson returned to Salem State to earn a bachelor s degree in sport management in Robinson was a member of the Dean s List in 2007 and Former Assistant Coaches Under Marshall and What They Are Saying... Chris Potter Assistant Coach Head Coach Wesleyan Having the opportunity to return to the school where you played and coach was a great experience. I had the opportunity to continue my education and see if coaching was a profession I wanted to pursue. Coach Marshall allowed me to get a strong sense of what recruiting, coaching and all the aspects of the job would entail. Thirteen years later and it was the stepping stone to where I am today. We had some great success and the players were some of the most talented that I have had the opportunity to coach. Bruce runs an excellent program and I consider myself lucky to have worked for him. 11 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT ASSISTANT COACHES Mike Coppola Assistant Coach First Season Connecticut 10 Former Assistant Coaches Under Marshall and What They Are Saying... Glenn Stewart Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Merrimack Mike Coppola enters his fi rst season as a volunteer assistant for Connecticut after a successful playing career at UConn. Coppola fi nished his career as the program s all-time leader in games played with 140. During his four years as a Husky, Coppola recorded 46 points on 22 goals and 24 assists. Coppola earned the team s Silver Bowl Award as a senior and was honored with the Coach John Chapman Award as a sophomore for the player that most exemplifi es the type of player that the late Coach Chapman would have wanted on his team. As an assistant coach, Coppola will assist in day to day planning of practice. He will also help coordinate video breakdown of upcoming opponents and past UConn performances along with other offi ce administrative tasks. I appreciate the opportunity that Coach Marshall gave me to help further both my studies and coaching career. While at the university, I had the opportunity to earn my Master s Degree while learning what it takes to be a great coach. Working at UConn was an amazing opportunity where I had a lot of fun and met some great people. I can t thank Bruce enough for the time he put in working with me and the opportunity that he gave me. Brian Meisner Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Alaska-Fairbanks Working with Coach Marshall at the University of Connecticut provided me the opportunity to become a better coach in a lot of different ways. I had the chance to really make an impact with the program not only in recruiting, but especially in coaching the team. Coach Marshall lets you do what you do best and implements it into the Husky environment. I always felt a part of what we were doing and that experience gave me confi dence and growth as I have embarked on my career in college hockey. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Coach Marshall and the University of Connecticut. Bruce Wolanin Assistant Coach Head Coach Pomfret School My time at UConn was great and I loved the experience I had there. I came to UConn after coaching three years at Yale into a program where the players were respectful, eager to learn and hard working. So, I couldn t help but enjoy my time here. We were successful during the years I was there winning the MAAC Championship. From a coaching perspective, Coach Marshall gave me a lot of responsibility during practices and games and his trust in me made me a better coach. The hands on experience of coaching and recruiting gave me the opportunity to develop as a coach and as a person. 12 UNIVERSITY SEASON PREVIEWOF CONNECTICUT UConn men s hockey celebrated its 50th year as a program statement in the Atlantic Hockey Association in in Following that historic season, the Huskies will look to celebrate another momentous occasion. UConn will FORWARDS take part in an outdoor game as part of the Whalers Hockey The Huskies bring a balanced attack into the season. Fest. Connecticut will take on in-state rival Sacred Heart on UConn returns nine of the top-10 scorers from last season February 13 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford as part of the including leading scorer and captain Andrew Olson (Alexandria, 10-day event that will include as many as 20 outdoor games Minn.). Olson fi nished his junior season with a team- featuring professional, college, prep school and high school high nine goals to go with 10 assists for 19 points. He also programs. fi nished tied for the team lead with four power-play goals. Following the success of last year s Frozen Fenway competition featuring the Boston College and Boston University men and the New Hampshire and Northeastern women, the UConn men and women will highlight the Whalers Hockey Fest with a double header. The men will play at 1 pm on Sunday afternoon before the women play at 4 pm against Providence College While the Huskies are excited to take part in this historic contest, the team will look to improve on last season s record. UConn reached the quarterfi nals of the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs after defeating Bentley on the road, 2-1, but fell to eventual Frozen Four competitors RIT in two games. The Huskies have the luxury of returning nine of the top-10 scorers from last season along with the starting goaltender in sophomore Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.). With an experienced team led by eight seniors, UConn will look to make a Headlining the forwards along with Olson is sophomore Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) and seniors Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.). Ambrosie and Krispel tied for the team lead with 11 assists last season. Ambrosie added seven goals, four on the power play, while Krispel put home three goals as a junior. Hernandez enters his senior season after notching eight goals and fi ve assists for 13 points. Hernandez led the team with two game-winning goals. Senior forwards Jeff Sapieha (Calgary, Alberta) and Chris Spicer (Syracuse, N.Y.) will both look to make an impact in their fi nal campaigns. Sapieha was named captain along with Krispel and Olson in the offseason. The depth up top continues with the junior class, led by Daniel Naurato (Northville, Mich.) and Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, British Columbia). Naurato and Ranallo paired with Ambrosie at the end of last season to create a formidable attacking line. Naurato recorded four goals and seven assists while Ranallo tallied two goals and six assists. Rounding out the junior class are Josh Bernard (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Corey Jendras (Abingdon, Md.). Both forwards fi nished the season with one goal. A trio of sophomores round out the returning forwards. Evan Carriere (Ottawa, Ontario) and James Gallagher (Marquette, Mich.) come into the season after notching three and nine points, respectively. Miles Winter (Horsham, Pa.) will suit up for the Huskies this season after transferring from Quinnipiac University in Coach Marshall and his staff added fi ve freshmen to the front line this season. Rui Encarnaco (White Plains, N.Y.), Billy Latta (Chicago Steele), Brant Harris (Estevan, Saskatchewan), Cole Schneider (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Jordan Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) all come to UConn looking to make an impact in the college game. If the freshmen can compete at the college level and add to a balanced UConn attack, the Huskies should be able to improve on last season s 1.59 goals per game average. Captain Andrew Olson DEFENSE This season, UConn will look to improve on last year s 3.59 goals allowed per game. The Huskies return eight defenders from Sophomore Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) was 9

13 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT SEASON PREVIEW named to the AHA All-Rookie Team last season after recording four goals and six assists for 10 points. Likely joining Gerke to form the top defensive pairing will be senior Stevie Bergin (Groton, Mass.). Bergin appeared in all 37 games last year and was presented with the team s Seventh Player Award. Seniors Matt Miller (Bayonne, N.J.) and Brian Reagan (Ballwin, Mo.) will make up the defensive unit along with juniors Chris Waterstradt (Tulsa, Okla.), Brad Cooper (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Tom Janosz (Elma, N.Y.). Miller fi nished the season with one goal and four assists while Reagan recorded one assist in 16 games. Waterstradt fi n- ished the year tied with Gerke as the top-scoring defenseman as the two players recorded 10 points on four goals and six assists. Cooper and Janosz were steady contributors on defense recording fi ve and six points, respectively. Redshirtsophomore transfer Grant Scott (Swickley, Pa.) comes to Storrs after playing for the University of Minnesota in and the Fargo Force of the USHL in GOALTENDING UConn will look for another strong performance from sophomore Garrett Bartus this season. Bartus joined the Huskies midway through the season and fi nished with a 3.26 goals against average and a.900 save percentage. He was named the Most Valuable Player by his teammates following the season. Bartus will be the starting goaltender looking to perform well for a full season in Connecticut also returns redshirt freshman Matt Grogan (Gilbert, Ariz.). Grogan redshirted his freshman campaign and will look to fi nd time in his second year at Connecticut. Joining the goaltenders this season is freshman Rob Behling (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Last season, Behling played with the Cobourg Cougars of the CCHL. Behling fi nished the season with a record to go along with a.871 save percentage. SCHEDULE UConn faces a tough non-conference schedule with games at Maine, Merrimack, Union and RPI. The Huskies open the season with four-straight road games starting with a pair of teams from Hockey East. UConn is on the road facing the nation s leading scorer in , Gustav Nyquist, at perennial power and No. 7 Maine (Oct. 9) before traveling to Merrimack (Oct. 16) to face the Warriors and the nation s seventh-highest scorer in Stephane Da Costa. The Huskies won t see Freitas Ice Forum until November 5 with a pair of games against Canisius. This season, UConn will play in the RPI Thanksgiving Tournament on November 26 and 27. UConn will battle the hosts on day one looking to face off against the winner of the Bowling Green vs. Alabama-Huntsville contest on the second day. UConn will later host the 18th annual Toyota UConn Hockey Classic on December 29 and 30. This season, the Huskies will welcome Princeton, Bowling Green and AHA foe Holy Cross. Captain Jason Krispel Connecticut will face Holy Cross on the 29th with the championship at 7:15 p.m. on the 30th. Following the Toyota UConn Classic, the Huskies will fi nish the season with eight games in the fi nal stretch of AHA play with a game at ECAC power Dartmouth on January 11 thrown in the mix. Highlighting the fi nal stretch of AHA action is the outdoor game at Rentschler against Sacred Heart on February 13. If the Huskies grow from their diffi cult non-conference schedule and perform well in the AHA, Connecticut should be playing some meaningful hockey come March and the AHA playoffs. 27 UNIVERSITY SEASON REVIEWOF CONNECTICUT The UConn men s hockey program fi nished with a record highlighted by a fi rst round victory over Bentley in the Atlantic Hockey playoffs. The Huskies traveled to Final Statistics Bentley for the opening round and came away with a 2-1 victory sparked by the game-winning goal from junior Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.). The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the fi rst period with a goal from junior Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.). Bentley evened the score at one only to have Hernandez net the game winner 33 seconds later. The Huskies would carry that momentum into the fi rst game of the AHA Quarterfi nals, taking top-seeded RIT into overtime before falling, 4-3. RIT, eventual Frozen Four competitors, would go on to end the Huskies season in the second game with a 4-1 defeat. Connecticut celebrated a milestone in the last game of the regular season as Head Coach Bruce Marshall earned his 300th victory at the helm of UConn hockey. Marshall led UConn to a 3-2 overtime victory over Mercyhurst at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on February 27, UConn showed heart and grit in the fi nal game, rallying from two goals down. Junior Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) was the difference maker as he put home the game-tying goal with 35 seconds remaining in regulation before tallying the game winner a mere 42 seconds into overtime. Krispel has been selected as a captain of the Huskies. Coach Bruce Marshall took UConn on a six-game road trip to start the season and consequently suffered six losses in a row. UConn opened with a pair of games at Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) power Ferris State before traveling to face an up-and-coming Merrimack (Hockey East) squad with AHA games against Bentley and RIT thrown in the mix. Connecticut followed the six-game losing streak with a pair of victories at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum over American International. UConn earned 3-1 and 4-1 victories over the Yellow Jackets. Following the fi rst two victories of the season, the Huskies suffered a 13-game winless streak. Midway through that stretch, UConn welcomed goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) to the team. Bartus made a remarkable impression as he set a new UConn record in only his third appearance in the UConn blue and white. Bartus led the Huskies to a 2-2 tie at Air Force with 57 saves, breaking the old record of 54 set in 2001 by Artie Imbriano. Bartus was a dose of energy for the Huskies as he fi nished with a respectable 3.26 goals against average, including a 3.02 goals against average in Atlantic Hockey play. Bartus also recorded a.900 save percentage and was named the team s MVP at the end-of-year banquet. #26 Stevie Bergin Connecticut fi nished the season with a record in Atlantic Hockey contests. The Huskies were led on offense by Olson. Olson fi nished his junior season with nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points. He was named a captain and earned the Coach John Chapman Award for the second-consecutive season at the 24

28 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT SEASON REVIEW Joining him on the All-Academic Team were freshman James Gallagher (Pre-Business Major), junior Matt Miller (Communications Major) and senior Brendan Olinyk (Management Major). The four players earned the award for garnering a 3.0 grade point average or higher during each semester. Ambrosie fi nished the season tied with Olson for the team lead with four power-play goals. Ambrosie was honored with the team s Thomas Jacquard Award. He led the UConn freshmen in nearly all offensive categories. Along with Bartus, the freshman class also produced a 2010 AHA All-Rookie Team selection in Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.). Gerke performed well on the UConn blue line in his fi rst season of college hockey. He fi nished the year with four goals and six assists for 10 points. He teamed with junior Stevie Bergin (Groton, Mass.) to create the top defensive pairing for the Huskies. Bergin was presented with the Seventh Player Award at the team s end-of-year banquet. Seniors Brendan Olinyk and Michael Coppola each fi nished their playing careers in Olinyk graduated with eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 95 games as a Husky. Coppola ended his playing career as the all-time leader in games played with 140. For his career, he tallied 22 goals and 24 assists for 46 points. Coppola has joined the coaching staff this season as a volunteer assistant coach. The men s hockey team also saw four players awarded for their excellence in the classroom. Ambrosie, an accounting major, was named to the Atlantic Hockey Association All- Academic Team to cap his impressive freshman campaign. 32 UNIVERSITY OF MARK CONNECTICUT EDWARD FREITAS ICE FORUM The first game in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum was on Nov. 7, 1998, when the UConn men s ice hockey team defeated AIC by a 3-1 score. The Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum was partially funded by the UCONN 2000 commitment by the State of Connecticut to help rebuild, renew and enhance the campuses of the University of Connecticut. The Freitas Ice Forum replaced the open UConn Ice Rink, which had served as Connecticut ice hockey s home since the early 1960s. The completely enclosed, state-of-the-art Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum is a yearround facility. The main building totals 53,000 square feet in a 230x230 foot structure. The skating facility includes a regulation 200x85 foot surface with a seating capacity of just under 2,000. Other features included in the single-level facility are a spacious warming area for fans and public skating patrons, a skate maintenance and rental room, a hospitality room and full concession stands. Head coach Bruce Marshall and the UConn hockey program make their home in a $4.2 million facility that was dedicated as the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on Feb. 5, The Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum was opened for the season and is the home of both the UConn men s and women s varsity ice hockey programs. In addition, the Freitas Forum is used by the entire University community and local area for recreational purposes. The facility is named for Mark Edward Freitas, a 1981 UConn graduate who has been extremely supportive to his alma mater. A former men s ice hockey letterwinner as an undergraduate, Freitas is a member of the University of Connecticut School of Business Hall of Fame and is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Frank Crystal and Company, Inc., located in New York City. The company is one of the largest insurance brokerage firms in the country. Freitas has also endowed a scholarship at UConn for students who are pursuing a career in business. The UConn men s and women s ice hockey teams are comfortably housed in varsity locker rooms which feature double-wide pro style wooden lockers for each squad member. The building also includes other locker rooms for visiting collegiate teams and for use by youth/adult hockey leagues. There are also separate dressing rooms for game officials. UConn men s head coach Bruce Marshall and women s head coach Heather Linstad and their staffs are housed in offices located in the Arena. The facility includes all new dasher boards, sound system, scoreboards and time of day clocks, player benches, as well as new penalty boxes and scorekeeper and timekeeper booths. The Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum has played host to several events since opening in In capturing its first conference title in the men s program history during the season, the facility played host to the MAAC Championship. 45 UNIVERSITY CONNECTICUT SUPPORT STAFF OF CONNECTICUT Maureen Butler Strength and Conditioning Coach Dino Mattessich Senior Associate Director of Athletics/ Internal Relations and Hockey Administrator Maureen Butler has been the strength and conditioning coach for the hockey team for the past four seasons. Butler graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2003 with a bachelor s degree in kinesiology. She cgraduated with a master s degree in exercise physiology in Butler is a certified strength and conditioning specialist as well as a certified level one coach for United States weightlifting and track and field. She spreads her time around while at the university working with men s and women s ice hockey and men s and women s track and field and cross country. Butler also spends her free time working with the USA Hockey under-18 women s national team. Mike Iacampo Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum Manager Chris Iacampo Equipment Manager STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The strength and conditioning program for University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut s intercollegiate teams. Assisting directly with the Strength and conditioning efforts for UConn hockey is strength and conditioning staff member Maureen Butler. UConn hockey players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky student-athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn hockey players can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program. Martin and his staff supervise a strength and conditioning program for each individual athlete for training all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each hockey player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. 46 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT SUPPORT STAFF Jeffrey A. Hathaway has provided effective leadership for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics as he enters his eighth year in that position. At the same time, he has also become a leader for college athletics on both the national and conference level. He has played a vital role in the success story of UConn athletics for 19 of the past 21 years as he was the Executive Associate Director of Athletics at the school from In his only two years away from the Storrs campus, Hathaway enjoyed a successful tenure as the Director of Athletics at Colorado State University from His first seven years as UConn s Director of Athletics have arguably been the most successful in school history. The academic year was another successful campaign. The football team played in its third-straight bowl game and won its second consecutive while the women s basketball team won the national championship with a perfect record for the second-straight year. In addition, the men s soccer, women s soccer, field hockey, men s basketball and baseball teams all qualified for postseason tournament play. UConn was also selected as one of 16 regional hosts for the NCAA baseball tournament. The women s ice hockey team also spent most of the year ranked in the top 10 of the country. Hathaway also directed UConn to reach an agreement with IMG College, a division of IMG Worldwide, during the academic year. This 10-year athletics multi-media rights partnership is worth more than $80 million in guaranteed payments to the University. In , UConn successfully completed the NCAA certification process. The institution was previously certified, once every 10 years as set forth by the NCAA, in Hathaway provided leadership for a comprehensive, year-long self study of the operations in the Division of Athletics, a site visit by a peer review team, a NCAA certification committee s review of the self-study and a report by the peer review team. The Division also reached new long-term agreements with two of its media partners in recent years Connecticut Public Television for women s basketball and WTIC radio for football and men s and women s basketball. UConn also completed a landmark ten-year, $46 million corporate partnership agreement with Nike, Inc. to exclusively provide footwear, apparel and equipment for Husky athletics. In addition to his leadership role at UConn, Hathaway is entering his fourthyear of a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Committee representing the BIG EAST Conference. Hathaway will serve as chairman of that committee in He is only the fourth individual in the history of the BIG EAST Conference to serve on the committee, joining Dave Gavitt, Jake Crouthamel and Mike Tranghese. Hathaway is a member of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Some significantly historic achievements have occurred during Hathaway s time as Director of Athletics. UConn became the first school to win the NCAA Division I men s and women s basketball championships in the same year (2004) and the football team was victorious in its first ever bowl game - the 2004 Motor City Bowl. Private fundraising for UConn athletics continues to provide exceptional academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. UConn secured a gift of $2.5 million from alumnus Mark Shenkman in 2004 for the building of the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, an intercollegiate and recreational services facility that serves the entire university community. Under Hathaway s guidance, the Division of Athletics received the University s Environmental Leadership Award for the construction of The Burton Family Football Complex and the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center. The two buildings are the University s first projects certified as meeting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for green buildings. At its 13th annual awards ceremony in March of 2008, the Connecticut Real Estate Exchange presented UConn with the Green Building Award for these environmentally-friendly facilities. In his role as Director, Hathaway also oversees UConn s Recreational Services program. Serving the entire University community, approximately 580,000 individual uses were logged last year, reflecting the popularity of the diverse health and fitness offerings to students, faculty and staff. My focus is on the student-athlete, says Hathaway. That s the most important part of our program. Our primary mission is the continued academic success of our student-athletes. The challenge is to identify people early in the process and assist them in charting a career path. In addition, we want to provide a quality experience in intercollegiate athletics for our student-athletes. Hathaway earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Maryland in He later received a Master s Degree in General Administration (1991) from the University of Maryland and is currently continuing work on a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. He attended The Sports Management Institute at the Universities of Notre Dame and Southern California. Hathaway also completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University. Born June 20, 1959, in Cheverly, Md., Hathaway and his wife Paula have two children: Meghan (October 15, 1991) and Michael (June 11, 1995). DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS MEDICINE The department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the hockey student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete. Physician coverage of the men s hockey team is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, M.D., the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician JEFFREY ANDERSON, M.D. Director of Sports Medicine Services Thomas Trojian, M.D. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Robert Arciero, M.D., Thomas DeBerardino, M.D., and Augustus Mazzocca, M.D. of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center, and Michael Joyce, M.D. of Orthopaedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of all student-athletes. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building. In addition to providing the finest in medical care for the UConn hockey program, the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 650 male and female intercollegiate studentathletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective. COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETES The University of Connecticut is committed to each hockey player, and all of its student-athletes, as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. Impressively, for the past six years the Connecticut student-athlete retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. BECKY TAYLOR CPIA Counselor The University realizes that the hockey team and all student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their personal time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as a liaison to the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete. In serving as a liaison between the Connecticut student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the CPIA counselors also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available with the University. These include orientation for studentathletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tutorial centers (an English/ Writing Center, Math Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars. The writing lab and computers have been networked to a national database which allow all student-athletes to do research at their actual computer stations. 43

I think my placement on the All-American team instantly gave our ice hockey team some of the recognition and creditability that it lacked on campus and in the hockey world. I am proud to have played at UConn and I am thrilled at the direction the team has taken in the years since I left. A 109 pts 188 For me it was about the tradition and the opportunity while at UConn to make a positive mark on the program. It was not about me being an All-American; it was about me helping to ensure that the long run of playoff appearances and winning records continued. I am proud of this award and the hockey player I became at UConn, however, I have a great deal more pride in the person and man I became as a result of my UConn experience and Coach Marshall As a student-athlete at the University of Connecticut, I received an outstanding education and an unbelievable hockey experience. I will be forever grateful to my family, friends, teammates, coaches, teachers and administrators for giving me the benefit of their many life experiences. I owe a debt of gratitude to them for helping me achieve All-American status 2 years in a row and eventually compete in the NHL for 9 years. Although I received numerous individual honors, I have always felt and still believe today to be a representative of these extraordinary people.
