1 2009 DIVISION III SENIOR ALL-STAR GAME hosted by Mount Holyoke College Sunday, November 22 Mount Holyoke Turf Field South Hadley, Mass. THE TRADITION CONTINUES...

2 Welcome All-Stars, Coaches Families and Friends On behalf of Mount Holyoke College and the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, I want to extend a warm welcome to all of the participants and fans for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Senior All-Star Game. We are excited to host this event featuring some of the top collegiate field hockey players in the nation. We are proud to showcase and share our new stadium and turf field with the Collegiate All-Stars. It seems fitting that this tournament is staged on our campus, because just over 100 years ago, some of the first field hockey on American soil was played on the Mount Holyoke campus. Constance Applebee (known as the Apple to many) traveled from England in 1901 to study anthropometry (measurement of the human body) at Harvard. While she was there, she used makeshift equipment to teach the sport of field hockey to her classmates. Field hockey had been popular in England for over 20 years and once introduced to the game, her classmates, including Harriet Ballintine, the director of physical education at Vassar, encouraged her to remain in the United States to teach the game to American women. The Apple spent the remainder of the year traveling to Mount Holyoke and other women s colleges teaching and promoting her sport. From the time it was introduced on our campus, it has been popular activity among our students and we are pleased to be able to offer it as one of our 14 intercollegiate sports. Today, at Mount Holyoke, we continue a sporting tradition that has played out for over 100 years! I want to thank NFHCA Executive Director, Jennifer Goodrich, NFHCA Division III National Chair Andy Whitcomb, Associate Athletic Director for Facilities Bardee Sadlier, Sports Information Director Mike Raposo, Athletic Trainers Ellen Perrella and Charity Sweeney, Student Chair Taylor Hedges, Public Address Announcer Save Caspole and all of our student volunteers for helping to make this event exciting and enjoyable for the athletes, coaches and fans. I wish each of the All-Stars and coaches the best of luck for a successful game. Laurie Priest Mount Holyoke Director of Athletics
