Team USA is the visiting team, will wear its white jersey and occupy the right bench (from the player s perspective looking onto the ice). Today's game will be televised on CNBC and streamed live at NBCOlympics.com. THE LATEST GOALTENDING TODAY Ryan Zapolski will start his fifth straight game for Team USA here today. He owns a record with a 2.2 goals against average and a.96 save percentage. Zapolski is the first U.S. netminder since Ryan Miller in 21 to start the first five games of an Olympic tournament. Zapolski plays for Jokerit of the KHL and leads the league in shutouts with nine. He played NCAA Division I college hockey at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. Brandon Maxwell will again serve as the back-up to Zapolski today. LOOKING TO GET TO SEMIFINALS The U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Team looks to advance to the semifinals of the Olympic tournament for the third straight Games and fourth time in the last five Olympics. With a win here today, the U.S. will advance to play the winner of the O.A.R.-Norway quarterfinal game on Friday (Feb. 23) at the Gangneung Hockey Centre. ALL-TIME IN THE QUARTERFINALS The U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Team is -3- in the quarterfinal round, most recently earning a 5-2 win over the Czech Republic in the 21 Olympic Winter Games. The U.S. had five different goal scorers and Ryan Suter recorded three assists to pace the U.S. attack. TIDBITS Troy Terry tied an Olympic record yesterday with three assists in one period. Terry assisted on all three U.S. goals in the second period of Team USA's 5-1 win over Slovakia. Terry's three assists were one short of the U.S. single-game Olympic record of four held by Eddie Olczyk. Further, Terry is only the second player in U.S. history to have three assists in one period, joining John Mayasich, who had three assists in the third period of a 9- win over Czechoslovakia on Feb., U.S. head coach Tony Granato is one of 1 men's players all-time for the U.S. to record three assists in a single Olympic game. He did it on Feb. 13, 1988, in a 1-6 victory over Austria. His third assist in the game was the primary helper on a goal by U.S. assistant coach Scott Young... Yesterday's 5-1 win over Slovakia included the first Olympic goals for Mark Arcobello, James Wisniewski and Garrett Roe. Wisniewski's goal marked the first for a U.S. defenseman in the Olympic tournament... 2 218 U.S. OLYMPIC MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM GAME NOTES Quarterfinal Round Czech Republic vs. USA February 21, 218 TIDBITS FROM PREVIOUS GAME NOTES Ryan Donato's father Ted Donato, who is the head men's ice hockey coach at Harvard University, arrived in South Korea on Feb. 19 and is here until the U.S. is finished playing. Ted Donato competed for Team USA in the 1992 Olympic Winter Games and co-led the team in points (-3-7) with Marty McIinnis (5-2--7) and Tim Sweeney (3---7)... The U.S. had the day off on Sunday (Feb. 18) and many players and their families visited the beach... Jim Smith, president of USA Hockey, arrived in South Korea on Feb. 17 and is here for the duration of the Olympics. Ron DeGregorio, former USA Hockey president and current chairman of the board of USA Hockey, is also here. DeGregorio is a member of the IIHF Council... Some of the players and staff attended the U.S. women's semifinal game vs. Finland on Feb. 19. The U.S. earned a 5- win to advance to the gold-medal game... U.S. equipment manager Scott Aldrich, who works full-time for USA Hockey in hockey operations, is making his Olympic debut. Aldrich, who is staying in South Korea following the Games to serve as equipment manager for the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team, has served as equipment manager for many other U.S. teams on the international stage, starting in 27 at the Deutschland Cup and Winter World University Games... Team USA includes four Ryans in Ryan Zapolski, Ryan Gunderson, Ryan Donato and Ryan Stoa. That, however, is not a record. The 21 Olympic team included six Ryans in Ryan Miller, Ryan Suter, Ryan Whitney, Ryan Callahan, Ryan Kesler and Ryan Malone. In addition, the roster featured a seventh "Ryan" in forward Bobby Ryan... Both the U.S. National Under-18 and Under-17 Teams from USA Hockey's National Team Development Program captured their respective Five Nations Tournament titles the week of Feb. 12. The U18s hosted the event at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich., and went 3-1, while the U17s were in Jarvenpaa, Finland, and went -. The U17 team is 1-- in international competition this season... Ryan Donato scored two power play goals on Feb. 16 to help propel the U.S. to a 2-1 win over Slovakia. Donato and his father Ted, who played for Team USA in the 1992 Olympic Winter Games, are the only father-son tandem to both score a goal in the Olympics for the U.S. There are four total father-son combos that have played for the U.S. in Olympic men's ice hockey history, also including Bill (196) and Dave Christian (198), Bob (198) and Ryan Suter (21, 21) and Ed (1956) and Gary Sampson (198)... Following the Feb. 16 game vs. Slovakia, Abby and Ellie Johannson, the wife and daughter of U.S. general manager Jim Johannson, were presented with the game puck in the team's lockerroom. Jim Johannson unexpectedly passed away at the age of 53 in the early morning hours of Jan. 21, 218, at this home in Colorado Springs, Colo. In addition, John Johannson, brother of Jim Johannson, was on hand to present the U.S. player of the game award to Ryan Donato... Ryan Donato is the first player with Harvard roots to score a goal in the Olympics for the U.S. men since Ted Drury tallied on Feb. 26, 199, in a -3 loss to Germany... Ryan Donato is Team USA's leading point getter with His father, Ted, co-led the 199 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team in points with -3-7 with Marty McIinnis (5-2--7) and Tim Sweeney (3---7).... U.S. defenseman James Wisniewski is the fourth member of the gold medal-winning 2 U.S. National Junior Team to play in the Olympics. That 2 team was the very first group to win the gold medal in the IIHF World Junior Championship. Other Olympians from that team are Ryan Suter, Zach Parise and Ryan Kesler... Brian O'Neill and Jordan Greenway scored in their Olympic debut Wednesday (Feb. 1) vs. Slovenia. The last players previously to score in their first Olympic game came in 21 when Ryan Malone, Bobby Ryan and David Backes tallied in their first ever Olympic game -- a 3-1 win over Switzerland on Feb Of the 22 players that dressed for Wednesday's (Feb. 1) game vs. Slovenia, all but Brian Gionta were making their Olympic debut. In addition, John McCarthy played his first-ever game for a U.S. national team at any level.... Jordan Greenway celebrated his 21st birthday on Friday (Feb. 16) in South Korea... Team USA has a large contingent of family and friends here in South Korea. Chad Billins, Jonathon Blum and Noah Welch each have 1 guests. For five players -- Blum, Chris Bourque, Chad Kolarik, David Leggio, and Bobby Sanguinetti -- both their wife and child(ren) are here, along with others in some cases... Team USA is tied with Slovenia as the second oldest in the tournament in average age at 3, trailing only Canada at 31. Teams range in average age from 27 to 31. Further, the U.S. is tied as the shortest team in the tournament at 1.82 meters and 11th in average weight at 19 pounds. Slovakia is the tallest (1.87) and heaviest (21) of any team in the tournament on average... Five U.S. players arrived in Gangneung the evening of Feb. 7, while 17 others arrived the evening of Feb. 8. Brian Gionta, Bobby Sanguinetti and Ryan Bourque had travel delays and didn't arrive until just after Team USA's practice on Feb. 9 concluded... The U.S. had six practices before its first game on Feb. 1 vs. Slovenia. The first practice included all but the three players above, with the other practices including all 25 rostered players... Captain Brian Gionta was in studio with NBCSN's Liam McHugh the morning of Feb. 13. Gionta, Noah Welch, Jim Slater and Bobby Butler visited NBC's Today Show that night, including an on-air session with Al Roker. The foursome also took a photo with Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim as well as NBC's Mike Tirico... Anne Thompson from NBC Nightly News sat down in stands at Gangneung Hockey Centre following practice on Saturday (Feb. 1) with Broc Little, Marc Arcobello and Brian O'Neill to talk about their roots at Yale University. She also spoke to U.S. assistant coach Keith Allain, who is the head coach at Yale. It is believed that Chris Bourque (U.S.)/Ray Bourque (Canada) and Paul Stastny (U.S.)/Peter Stastny (Czechoslovakia/Slovakia) are the only two father-son combos who have played in the men's ice hockey tournament in the Olympics representing different countries. The tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups of four. Team USA is competing in Group B alongside Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia. Group A includes Canada, Czech Republic, South Korea and Switzerland while Group C includes Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The teams will play a round robin within their groups, with eight teams earning byes to the quarterfinal round and four teams playing qualification games to earn quarterfinal spots. The winners of the four quarterfinal contests advance to the semifinals, and the two semifinal winners will square off in the gold-medal game while the two semifinal losers will meet for bronze. In his career, Braziel deployed to more than 27 countries and served in 13 separate combat deployments. In his final position during his 22 years of active service, he was the deputy commander for Marine Corps Intelligence Activity, in Quantico, Virginia the 1,2 person civilian and military Service Intelligence Center. JOHANNSON PRESENCE U.S. general manager Jim Johannson passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours on Jan. 21, 218, at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the age of 53. Johannson's wife Abby and their two-year-old daughter Ellie are here for the Games as is Johannson's brother John. There is a locker stall dedicated to Johannson in the team's dressing room and all members of Team USA have JJ T-shirts and coins. Other remembrances include a patch inside both the practice and game jerseys and JJ pins. CAPTAIN AMERICA Brian Gionta is captain of the 218 U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Team. Gionta, who played for Team USA at the 216 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, has skated in 1,6 career NHL regular-season contests. The U.S. has three alternate captains in defensemen Matt Gilroy and Noah Welch and forward Jim Slater. Two of the three will serve as alternates for each game, with Gilroy and Welch serving the role for tonight's game. HEARTWARMING U.S. defenseman James Wisniewski, who has 552 NHL regular season games on his resume, has had four ACL knee surgeries -- three on his right knee and one on his left. At 33, prior to knowing he might have the chance to play in the Olympics, he considered retiring. But with the Olympics a possibility, he wanted to give it a shot and has spent the year in Germany playing for Kassel. His Olympic dream has become reality and on the ice following Team USA's Feb. 16 win vs. Slovakia, he got to share a special moment with his daughter Jamie when he skated over to the glass and wished her a happy (5th) birthday and told her he loved her. His wife, mom and dad, little sister and other daughter were there at the glass too. 6

10 218 U.S. OLYMPIC MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM GAME NOTES Quarterfinal Round Czech Republic vs. USA February 21, 218 USA HOCKEY HAPPENINGS FELLOW U.S. NATIONAL HOCKEY TEAM SUCCESS Over the last two months, six other U.S. hockey teams have found success in international competition. On Nov. 12, the U.S. Women's National Hockey Team topped Canada, 5-1, to claim the 217 Four Nations Cup at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. The title was Team USA's third-straight in the event and eighth overall. A month later, the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team edged Canada, 3-2, to claim the 217 World Sled Hockey Challenge at McLauchlin Arena in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The victory marked an unprecedented fourth-straight title in the event and tournament record sixth title overall. The U.S. National Under-17 Team also claimed a pair of international titles. On Dec. 16, the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated Russia, 2-1, in a shootout in its final game of the 217 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament to secure first place with an undefeated (W-OTW-OTL-L) record. The team also claimed the 217 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Dawson Creek, British Columbia in early November. On Dec. 16, the U.S. Junior Select Team reached the championship game of the 218 World Junior A Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia, but fell to Canada West, 5-1, to earn second. The U.S. National Junior Team earned a bronze medal on Jan. 5, when it topped the Czech Republic, 9-3, to close out the 218 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York. For the first time ever, Team USA has now earned a medal in three straight years at the event (217 - gold, bronze). Finally, the 218 U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team won an unprecedented fourth-consecutive gold medal at the IIHF Under-18 Women's National Championship last month in Dmitrov, Russia. After sweeping the preliminary round, the U.S. erased a two-goal deficit in the final period to top Canada in a shootout, -3, in the semifinals, before earning a 9-3 victory over Sweden to take home gold. 218 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES The 218 Paralympic Winter Games will take place in PyeongChang, South Korea, from March 9-18, 218. The U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team, which was unveiled on Jan. 1 alongside the Men's and Women's Olympic rosters, will represent the United States in sled hockey. The United States enters the Paralympic Winter Games as two-time defending Paralympic gold medalists. After going undefeated and unscored upon to claim the gold medal at the 21 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Team USA became the first nation to claim back-to-back Paralympic gold medals in sled hockey when it defeated Russia, 1-, in the gold-medal game of the 21 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. USA HOCKEY'S NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Founded in 1996, USA Hockey s National Team Development Program began operations in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and remained there until the summer of 215. The full-time program is composed of two squads, the U.S. National Under-18 Team and U.S. National Under-17 teams, which compete in the USHL as well as against international and collegiate competition. The Under-17 Team competes in the United States Hockey League and also participates in three international events annually. The U.S. National Under-18 Team s schedule includes games against NCAA Division I and III opponents, contests versus USHL teams as well as competition in three international tournaments. USA HOCKEY ARENA USA Hockey Arena, home of USA Hockey s National Team Development Program, is a two-sheet facility with regulation ice (85x2) in the main arena and Olympic-size ice (1x2) for the secondary sheet. Since being acquired by the USA Hockey Foundation on April 1, 215, the facility has added 2, square feet to the property that included adding a 9,8-squarefoot workout facility, additional offices and a conference center. In total, the facility encompasses 17, square feet with the main rink providing 3,5 seats for hockey games and,5 seats for other performances and events.
