6 WOMEN IN WINTER SPORTS Issue date: January 24, 2018 $8 50 Booklet of 10 stamps As our best winter athletes prepare to compete in 2018, Canada Post is issuing a set of five stamps to celebrate the achievements of six amazing Canadian superstars who topped the podium in a variety of winter sports. The six athletes honoured are Shirley and Sharon Firth, who amassed a combined 79 medals and competed in four consecutive Olympic Winter Games; Sonja Gaudet, the world s most decorated wheelchair curler, who played lead for Canada s gold-medal-winning team at the past three Paralympic Winter Games; Danielle Goyette, a driving force on Canada s National Women s Hockey Team for 16 seasons, who won Olympic gold twice; Nancy Greene, named Canada s female athlete of the 20 th century, with 13 international victories and two overall titles, plus two Olympic medals; and speed skater Clara Hughes, the only Olympian to win multiple medals at the Winter and Summer Games. In depicting Canadian women powerhouses in winter sports, Subplot s design team set out to create a look that, according to creative director Roy White, would celebrate the joy, endurance and dedication that has gone into their illustrious achievements over their careers. 8 BLACK HISTORY KATHLEEN (KAY) LIVINGSTONE Issue date: February 1, 2018 $1 85 First day of issue special envelope $8 50 Booklet of 10 stamps Issued on the first day of Black History Month, these stamps recognize the contributions of two prominent, ground-breaking Canadians. Kathleen (Kay) Livingstone ( ) A long-time Toronto resident, Kathleen Livingstone was an activist, humanitarian and popular radio host devoted to the empowerment of Black women. She founded the Canadian Negro Women s Association in the 1950s and, in 1975, launched the Congress of Black Women of Canada now a nationwide organization. In 2011, she was named a Person of National Historic Significance by the Government of Canada. We are thrilled that people will learn not only about her efforts but also about the kind of person she was: a mother who served her family and a humanitarian who served her people, her city and her country, says her daughter, Rene Livingstone. She did it generously and she did it well. Lincoln M. Alexander ( ) Toronto-born Lincoln MacCauley Alexander had a distinguished career as a public servant and became a leader in the fight for racial equality.
