3 2018 CIS Championship Preview The Trinity Western men s volleyball team will be pursuing history this weekend, as the Spartans look to become the first team in the Spartans illustrious history to win three straight U SPORTS championships. With the Spartans in the midst of an unprecedented era of dominance TWU has won five consecutive banners, including three straight Canada West championships and back-to-back U SPORTS titles TWU has one more mountain to climb to put the finishing touches on the greatest three-year run in the history of U SPORTS men s volleyball. No team has ever won both the conference and national championships in three consecutive years. Leading the way on a relatively young roster TWU has two rookie starters and a secondyear starter has been setter Adam Schriemer. The team s lone fifth-year starter, who was named the Canada West Player of the Year, has done a masterful job in guiding this year s group to both a program-best 22-win regular season and yet another conference crown. Schriemer, who finished his regular season career fifth all-time in Canada West history, with 3,448 career assists, had a conference leading assists per set, while guiding TWU to a Canada West best.311 hitting percentage. After helping TWU to the regular season title, he took his game to yet another level in the postseason, as last year s U SPORTS tournament MVP averaged assists per set in the Spartans five Canada West playoff contests. While Schriemer s surrounding cast may be young libero Carter Bergen is TWU s only other starter who is beyond his third year of eligibility the Spartans burgeoning talent is amongst the very best in the country. On the outside, the three-pronged attack of Eric Loeppky, Jesse Eflser and Jacob Kern have been nothing short of outstanding this year. Loeppky, who was last year s U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, has continued on an almost otherworldly upward trajectory, as the secondyear star was named a Canada West First Team All-Star after an MVP-type year. Loeppky finished the regular season with the second most points per set in the country, at 5.0, while earning a.362 hitting percentage, which was good for third in U SPORTS. His work from the service line was also impressive, as he finished with the second most aces per set (0.61) in all of U SPORTS. In five playoff games, Loeppky has been even better, improving his kills per set from 4.05 in the regular season to 4.50 in the playoffs, while hitting.397. Playoff Finish: Canada West champions Regular season / playoff records: 22-2/ 5-0 Last U SPORTS Championship: 2017 Total U SPORTS Championships: 5 U SPORTS RANKINGS Top Ten: 1st Kills per Set: (1st) Hitting %:.311 (1st) Assits per Set: (1st) Service Aces: 164 (2nd) Aces per Set: 1.86 (3rd) Digs: 778 (10th) Digs per Set: 8.84 (20th) Blocks per Set: 2.40 (9th) Points per Set: 17.1 (1st) Home attendance avg: 445 (6th) Individual Leaders Kills per set: Eric Loeppky 4.05, Jacob Kern 2.89, Jesse Elser 2.84 Blocks per set: Riley Vander Meulen 1.18, Pearson Eshenko 1.07, Jackson Howe 1.00 Assists per set: Adam Schriemer led Canada West Digs per set: Carter Bergen 2.19 Aces per set: Eric Loeppky 0.61, Jesse Elser 0.48 Meanwhile, the first-year Elser put together one of the most dominant rookie seasons the program has ever seen, hitting.301 while earning 2.84 kills per set. His 0.48 aces per set also put him fifth in Canada West throughout the regular season. While much of the limelight has found its way upon TWU s young attackers, third-year Jacob Kern has stepped into the starting lineup this year and consistently been a pillar of strength for TWU. His 2.89 kills per set had him second on the Spartans, solidifying TWU s outside attack. In the middle, the high-flying duo of third-year Pearson Eshenko and first-year Jackson Howe has created a tandem that, in terms of sheer size and block touch, is unmatched across U SPORTS. Eshenko finished the year 10th in U SPORTS with 1.07 blocks per set, while Howe was 16th overall with 1.00 blocks per set. Defensively, TWU s Bergen has been a steadying force in the back row. He is a vocal and emotional leader and will play a key role in any success the Spartans have at nationals. The five-time U SPORTS champion Spartans will return to McMaster University this weekend looking to once again enjoy the now-familiar confines of Burridge Gymnasium. With two of the Spartans five national championships coming on McMaster s home court in 2006, TWU won its first-ever title by beating Alberta, while in 2016, the Spartans beat the host Marauders in the final TWU has dreams of making more history in Hamilton. Even though we ve been lucky enough to be at this tournament a number of years in a row it never gets old. It s just as exciting this year as it was the first time we got the chance to go. It s the final weekend of the year and we get to be one of 8 teams still playing. The thing we often talk about is how much fun it is to get one more week together. This team really enjoys being together and by being at nationals we max out the time we can spend before we have to call it a season. We can t wait to get going. - Ben Josephson

Story of TWU: in 1961, a small group of people had an extraordinary vision to establish a Christian university in Canada to prepare leaders of integrity. They purchased Seal-Kap Dairy Farm, and opened the first classes of Trinity Junior College in the fall of 1962 with 17 students. The College quickly grew to 800 students by 1984, when it was granted membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). In 1985, the British Columbia legislature granted it a charter under the name Trinity Western University. Trinity Western takes a unique approach to university education. Working from a Christian worldview, it combines ethics and morality with career-oriented disciplines in an integrated learning community. It facilitates whole person development and transforms many young men and women with a vision to make a positive contribution to the world. Building on its well-recognized academic programs, the University has recently launched a School of Business, School of Education and the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa. The mission of Trinity Western University, as an arm of the church, is to develop godly Christian leaders: positive, goal-oriented university graduates with thoroughly Christian minds; growing disciples of Jesus Christ who glorify God through fulfilling the Great Commission, serving God and people in the various marketplaces of life Glover Road, Langley, B.C., Canada, V2Y 1Y1 P: F: Web: The mission of Trinity Western University, as an arm of the church, is to develop godly Christian leaders: positive, goal-oriented university graduates with thoroughly Christian minds; growing disciples of Jesus Christ who glorify God through fulfilling the Great Commission, serving God and people in the various marketplaces of life.

8 STRONG - UNITED - DETERMINED - FAITHFUL In the fall of 1963 TWU Dean of Students Leland Asa ordered new gold and brown uniforms for Trinity Junior College. The new uniforms arrived in January of To accompany the uniforms, the students were looking for a new name for the TJC athletic teams. They chose the Spartans. Today ancient Sparta is often remembered for its military accomplishments and is thought to be a society lacking in art, literature and culture. Upon taking a closer look at the people of ancient Sparta, they may be more aptly described as a people who had a strong devotion to the intellect, the arts and to physical exercise and whose culture focused on much more than just military strength. The Spartans of old made significant contributions to their society, contributions which have continued to shape the world we live in today. Some of these include the first democracy in recorded history, the introduction of land reform aimed at equalizing wealth among its citizens and the development of a complex system of mutual defence treaties. The Spartans were known for aggressively defending democracy against tyranny because they so strongly believed in a society of freedom. Sparta led the world in the area of women s rights. Spartan women enjoyed such things as the right to inheritance, property ownership and public education. These are rights that today we would consider elementary, but at the time they were unheard of for women. Sparta s public education system, the agoge, was also admired almost universally by contemporaries. The people of Sparta had a strong commitment to education, but this was not the only thing that Sparta was admired for; Sparta also became well known for its constitution, its music and dance. It was her citizens the lawmakers, the statesmen, the philosophers and the poets who were the most widely admired in ancient times. They were united in their values and faithful to hold true to them. In short, the Spartans were a proud people with strong convictions, tremendous discipline, significant power and culture-shaping influence. They were indeed champions and leaders in many different areas of life. Their efforts to develop the whole person, their discipline to develop themselves physically, their respect for women and education, their will to build a strong community, and their desire to contribute to the betterment of society have left an inspiring legacy. It is from this legacy that we distill and aspire to the traits of strength, unity, determination and faithfulness, and it is from this legacy that we have taken the name Spartans. The Spartan name has endured at Trinity Western for 44 years. The TWU Athletics logo however, has gone through a somewhat evolutionary process. The first TWU Spartan logo appeared in the early 70 s and began to take shape over the next decade. In the spring of 1986 the athletic teams of the newly named Trinity Western University ordered new uniforms, and with the new uniforms came new team colours to the Spartans. The Spartans would exchange brown and gold for blue, gold and white and with that would see another change to their logo. Bob Lee and fellow members of the men s basketball team assisted in a revision of the Spartans logo. They combined the TWU letters with a warrior head to create this new revised logo, which was refined once again in 1988 and then customized into a 3-D version in The most recent rendering of this logo was finalized in 2005 by TWU s University Communications Department TWU Men s Volleyball Media Guide Page 8 For more than 30 years the Spartan logo has been refined. There have been discussions about whether the helmet in the logo was more representative of Troy or Rome than Sparta, whether or not the logo should contain more or less detail and whether or not it was an appropriate logo at all. The many variations eventually began to cause confusion as to which logo was the correct logo for the Spartans. Even the updated 2005 logo presented several design problems and began to look dated in style. Confusion extended beyond the logo itself, and as late as the turn of the century, TWU athletic teams were occasionally referred to as the Trojans instead of the Spartans by outside individuals. It was determined that because of these and other branding related issues that the logo for the TWU Spartans needed to be changed. In the fall of 2006 TWU s Department of Athletics initiated a logo redesign process. A team that began with of members of the Dept. of Athletics, and expanded to include TWU s University Communications, and eventually a Vancouver design company (Industrial Brand Creative Inc.), took on the task of redesigning the Spartan logo. After a year of hard work, TWU and Spartan Athletics are proud to present a new logo. From the beginning of the logo redesign process, several issues became very clear. It was important that the new logo remain true to the identity of the TWU Spartans. It had to clearly articulate who we are in light of the ancient Spartan values we aspire to. It was imperative that the new logo build on our history, not erase it. Great effort was made to follow our history, and the helmet on the latest version of the Spartan logo is more in keeping with the actual battle helmet that the ancient warriors of Sparta wore into campaigns. This is also the look that was achieved with the original TWC logo from the early 70 s providing a strong tie to our logo roots. It was important that the new logo be more versatile and simple, yet classic in design. In short the new logo had to clearly state who we are in name as well as in design, and to represent the values we hold to as Spartans. With these things in mind, the process began to unfold and eventually the new logo was born. Since 1963, the Trinity Western Spartans have been writing their own history, a proud history, built around community, integrity, respect, and sacrifice. In 1999, the Spartans joined the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), the highest level of university sport in the country, and in 2001, they launched the Complete Champion Approach TM, a program unique to Canadian university sport. The CCA TM is a powerful and effective program aimed at the development of the whole person, and one more step along the journey that is building the legacy of the Trinity Western Spartans. It is a tool we use to help us shape and transform our sport and culture. Through our successes in the CCA TM, and as a result of our success at the CIS level, Trinity Western University is becoming widely known across Canada as the home of those who pursue excellence and the home of champions who are having an impact on communities around the world. The ancient Spartans worked together to achieve their goals and uphold their values. It was this unity that allowed them to become the people we know today and to accomplish all they set out to achieve. They succeeded because they were a team, and the same principles hold true for the TWU Spartans. Together we are strong, together we are united, together we are determined, together we are faithful, together we are Spartans!

26 U SPORTS MVB PLAYER OF HTE YEAR ADAM SCHRIEMER U SPORTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR U SPORTS FIRST TEAM ALL-CANADIAN CANADA WEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANADA WEST FIRST TEAM ALL-STAR Adam Schriemer of the Trinity Western Spartans is the Player of the Year in men s volleyball, becoming the third Spartan in the last four years to earn the national honour. Schriemer finished his career with one of the most impressive setting seasons in Spartans history. The fifth-year superstar guided a young TWU side one featuring two rookie starters to a nation-best.311 hitting percentage while, himself, averaging a U SPORTS-leading assists per set of players with at least 11 matches played. The now three-time conference champion and two-time national champion was instrumental in leading TWU to a program-record and Canada West-leading 22-win regular season. His outstanding season capped the greatest statistical setting career in Spartans history. Schriemer finished with a program-best 3,448 assists over his five years at TWU, finishing his career with the fifth most assists in Canada West history. Since joining the Spartans in 2014, Schriemer played in the Canada West final in all five years of his career, winning the last three, and in each of the last three U SPORTS finals, winning the last two. Schriemer is the fifth TWU player overall to win the award, joining Ryan Sclater ( ), Nick Bel Bianco ( ), Ben Ball ( ), and Josh Howatson ( ). What s crazy for me to get my head around is the path that Adam has led us on while being our setter, said Trinity Western head coach Ben Josephson. As a rookie, he led us to winning the Canada West regular season title and was the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. In his second year, he set us to a national final appearance. In his third year, he helped us win a Canada West title and was the Final Four MVP and then we won the national championship. In his fourth year, he led us to another Canada West title, a national title and was the U SPORTS tournament MVP. Now, in his fifth year, he led us to another Canada West regular season title and a Canada West title and has been awarded Canada West and U SPORTS Player of the Year. While this award is recognition of this past season, for me it s the perfect way to sum up a historic career. It s one that has seen him lead our program to places we never thought possible, and without Adam it would not have been possible.
