All requests received one week in advance will be mailed, while all others will be left at the will call window, which is located at the entrance to the Hart Center. Every effort will be made to accommodate all members of the media, but as space is limited, we may not be able to honor all requests. Radio Broadcasts Holy Cross has installed phone lines which can be rented by visiting radio. There is a charge of $75.00 per line for commercial radio, or $50.00 per line for student radio. Players are available in person and for phone interviews on most days, subject to the individual student-athlete s academic responsibilities. Arrangements for all interviews should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Home phone numbers will not be given out, and on game day, only postgame interviews will be granted. The best time to reach coach Pearl by phone is on weekday mornings. Parking Parking at the Hart Center is on a first-come, first-served basis. The parking lots in front of the Hart Center are ordinarily able to handle all of your parking needs. 6 Holy Cross Season Preview The Holy Cross men s hockey team returns 16 players, including four starters and eight of its top 10 point producers from a year ago ( , Atlantic Hockey), to a team that will be looking to capture its third AHA championship and third NCAA Tournament appearance. The team is excited to come back and have a successful season, said 14th-year head coach Paul Pearl, the all-time winningest coach in the program s history. We went through some tough times last year but we played two great games in the playoffs and I think that positive momentum will carry over to the start of practice. The team will be led by its co-captains, senior defenseman Marty Dams and junior forward Ryan Driscoll. Both of them are great players, said Pearl. You have to be a great player for the guys to respect you and vote for you as captain. Ryan is a determined player. He is a really tough kid and will do what ever that is asked of him. Marty is also a tough player, while he also keeps things light in the locker room. So it is a good combination of captains. Pearl sees the importance of how well the defense plays as a major factor in the success of the season, including the play of the four freshmen Junior Brodie Sheahan defenders. For us to be successful, the strength of our team has to be our defense, said Pearl. I think we will be pretty good up front. We have to improve in scoring five-on-five, but our power play was outstanding last year, so we should be good offensively. If we can increase our goals per game average up by a half a goal we will be as good as anyone in the league in terms of scoring goals. It is defensively where we have to be great. The three championships we have won were because of our defense. We have to be a team that only gives up two or less goals a game. Holy Cross 22.7 power play percentage last year ranked second in the league and fourth in the nation, but Pearl would like to see an increase in goals in equal strength play. The focus early on is going to be fiveon-five scoring, said Pearl. We are usually a pretty good power play team, but we have to be a good five-on-five team. With the five freshmen forwards coming in, they will be given a look right away to see what they can do five-on-five. Pearl also believes the team has solid depth. The talent we have is off the charts, said Pearl. But our depth will depend on how quick that talent of the freshmen will resonate into effectiveness on the ice during games. If that happens then we will have a ton of depth. The Crusaders will also focus on being a strong team on the penalty kill. I am confident that we have the ability to clear the puck and limit shots, said Pearl. We need to get back to being a great shot blocking team. That is very important. The four seniors, Dams, Charlie Lockwood, Shane McAdam and Dewey Thomson, bring the experience of being freshmen when the Crusaders defeated Minnesota in the NCAA Tournament in 2006, and the determination to get back to the tournament as seniors. Marty is a physical strong player who we expect to have an outstanding senior year, said Pearl. Marty and Shane were big factors in our run in the NCAAs as freshmen. Shane is a dynamite defenseman. He is just a great player. Up front I think Dewey will have a great season. He is a good five-on-five player and has become an excellent penalty killer. He is such a great leader and player. We expect him to get a lot of points this year. Charlie is also a great player. When he did get a chance to play in the season he was outstanding. He can be a factor in goal. Now in its third year with the program, the junior class of Ian Dams, Driscoll, Rob Forshner, Peter Lorinser and Brodie Sheahan, are expected to have a very strong season. We always expect our juniors to be major contributors because after two years of being on the team you should be prepared now to step up and be big factors in the success of the team, said Pearl. I think during the second half of the season Rob was the best center in the league. He was excellent. Brodie had a very consistent year as he led the team in assists and points. He is ultra talented and competitive. He is so skilled and makes the guys on the ice even better. We can expect even more points from Brodie this season. Ryan is so versatile in that he can kill penalties and he can also play on the power play. He really got better in winning draws which is big for us. Ryan is a dependable solid player who also has the ability to score goals. Peter has been a solid penalty killer for us and we expect Ian to have a great year in net. The sophomore class of Joe Brock, Matt Celin, Jamie Jelinek, J.P. Martignetti, Adam Roy, Everett Sheen and Mark Znutas are coming off an outstanding rookie season in which all of them saw substantial playing time. The sophomore class is very talented, said Pearl. This class has a little bit of everything. Everett is a great two-way player who had a great freshman season as he led the team in goals. Joe is a pure goal scorer who will help us in scoring five-on-five goals. He can really shoot the puck. I loved the way he developed last year as he had a great end of the season. J.P. is a big strong kid who can score. Jamie is a fast skater who also knows how to score. Mark has great offensive skills, while he also had a great year on defense. Matt played a lot of time last year and demonstrated Holy Cross Men s Ice Hockey

7 Holy Cross Season Preview that he is a great player in big games. Adam is a very quick goalie who loves to play. We expect him to continue where he left off and have an outstanding season in goal. Sophomore Jordan Cyr transferred from Rensselaer after the season, and after attending Holy Cross in the academic year is now eligible to compete. He will be a two-way center, said Pearl. He is a strong kid who will be a big time leader. We are very excited for Jordan to be part of this team. Holy Cross will welcome a big class of nine freshmen to the program. Kyle Atkins, Gianni Baldassari, Matt Clune, Andrew Cox, Mike Daly, Matthew Davis, Matt Gordon, Luke Miller and Jay Silvia are expected to contribute to the program right away. I expect them to see a lot of minutes, said Pearl. We need all four defenders to be college ready. I know all four can play. They are all good defensemen who we expect to have great careers. Up front we need two or three of them to be in the top three lines and two of them to get into the fourth line. If these freshmen can have the same type of year that our current sophomores and juniors did then we will have great depth. Once again the Crusaders will play a challenging non-conference schedule. Holy Cross will face Providence (Oct. 25) and Dartmouth (Jan. 21) at the Hart Center, while it will play at Boston University (Nov. 25) and at New Hampshire (Dec. 11). The Crusaders will also compete at the Denver Cup with a game against Denver (Jan. 2) and either Boston University or Rensselaer (Jan. 3). The Atlantic Hockey Tournament is moving to a four-round format that will begin on March 7 with a single-game elimination as the seventh and eighth place teams host the 10th and ninth place teams respectively. Then on March the best two-out-of-three quarterfinals series will take place. The semifinals and finals will be played at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y., on March a Junior Rob Forshner THE FORWARDS Returning 9; Lost 6; Newcomers 6 Holy Cross returns nine forwards from last year and welcomes six newcomers. The Crusaders top three goal scorers return, including Sheen who led the team in goals with 15 which were tied for seventh in the nation by rookies. A member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team, Sheen is coming off of a summer in which he participated in the Anaheim Ducks conditioning camp. Sheahan is expected to have another big season as last year he led the team in assists (20) and points (33), while he was second in goals (13). He was also strong on the power play as his nine power play goals tied for second in the conference. Sheahan earned third team All-Atlantic Hockey honors. Brock ranked third on the team in goals a year ago with nine as he will be expected to provide a lot of offense. Forshner, who tied for third on the team in assists (17) and points (24) last season, is a play-making center who will be a key player in the success of the offense. Driscoll is a center who provides leadership on the ice and is also a force on the power play as he has scored 10 career power play goals. Jelinek, Lorinser, Martignetti and Thomson are expected to be key for the Crusaders in scoring goals during five-on-five situations, while Cox, Cyr, Baldassari, Gordon, Miller and Silvia look to contribute immediately to the team. THE DEFENSEMEN Returning 4; Lost 5; Newcomers 4 The play of the Crusader defense will be a major factor in the success of the team. Marty Dams and McAdam will provide strong leadership to a defense that also consists of two sophomores and four freshmen. Znutas, who earned Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie accolades as he led the team s defensemen in goals (six) and points (17), and Celin will look to continue their solid play from their rookie season, while Atkins, Clune, Daly and Davis are expected to see game-time right away. THE GOALTENDERS Returning 3; Lost: 0; Newcomers 0 Holy Cross returns all three goaltenders from last season in Ian Dams, Lockwood and Roy. Roy is coming off an outstanding freshman year in which he set a Holy Cross freshman record for most saves in a single-season with 771 in 26 games. He also had a.911 save percentage and a 2.90 goals against average. Dams played in 12 games last year with a.902 save percentage and a 2.95 goals against average. Lockwood, who has been solid in net in 10 career games, has the ability to shutdown an opponent s offense. All three goalies are expected to compete for ice time. 22 Holy Cross Head Coach Paul Pearl Paul Pearl is in his 14th year at the helm of the Holy Cross ice hockey program, and is just the fifth head coach in the history of ice hockey at Holy Cross. On January 21, 2006, with a 3-2 victory at Dartmouth, Pearl became the school s all-time winningest coach with the 168th victory of his career. Pearl has forged a record at Holy Cross over 13 years and has been the man behind the bench in seven of the nine most successful seasons in Holy Cross history, while he has had three teams post 20-plus win seasons. Along with 12 post-season appearances in 13 years, Pearl led the Crusaders to their first two NCAA Tournament appearances in and , while he coached the Crusaders to their first ever NCAA Tournament win with the 4-3 overtime victory over Minnesota in Grand Forks, N.D., on March 24, In , Pearl led the Crusaders to a school single season record 27 victories, as the team posted an overall record of Holy Cross also claimed the Atlantic Hockey regular season and tournament titles. During the campaign, the Crusaders tallied a overall record. Holy Cross swept the Atlantic Hockey tournament, and captured two shutout victories en route to the Championship Title, including the 5-0 playoff win versus American International (3/13/04) and the 4-0 championship game win over Sacred Heart (3/20/04). I like the Shawn Walsh line, Recruit offense and teach defense. We like to get a higher skilled type of player here, someone who can skate and handle the puck. We feel like we can take care of the defensive part. The size part we can take care of in the weight room with coach (Jeff) Oliver. We are going to go after each game and hopefully win each one. Our philosophy is the same as it was 14 years ago. We want to get better each day; be it at practice, a film session or a game. What type of players do you recruit? We like to bring in intelligent players, both academically and on the ice. It is important that he has good hockey sense, skates well and is a good teammate. Why should a student-athlete attend Holy Cross? Holy Cross is a perfect blend of academics and athletics. To be here on a beautiful campus, dealing with some of the best professors in the country and to be playing for a good Division I ice hockey program. The Holy Cross experience for a student-athlete is up there with any in the country. How important is scheduling? Playing out of league games against some of the top teams in the country spices up the regular season. I do like in-season tournaments. Those are exciting to play in and make regular-season games a little bit more meaningful. What are the strengths of the staff? Our staff is very versatile, Rob (Godfrey) and I played defense, and Brian (Akashian) and Jason (Smith) played forward. We hit all the areas on a team. We have four guys who understand Holy Cross and the balance you have to endure as a student-athlete. All four of us are passionate, not just about winning hockey games, but winning hockey games at Holy Cross. 24 Holy Cross Coaching Staff Brian Akashian 01 Assistant Coach Seventh Season Brian Akashian, a former Crusader captain, is now in his seventh season at his alma mater as an assistant coach. His responsibilities for the Holy Cross hockey program include working with the Crusader defense and assisting with special teams. Before returning to Holy Cross, Akashian spent one season as a graduate assistant at Suffolk University (ECAC Northeast, NCAA Division III) while attending law school. A four-year letterwinner with the Crusaders from as a forward under head coach Paul Pearl, Akashian appeared in 102 games for Holy Cross and helped lead the Crusaders to the MAAC Championship in Following his junior season, Akashian was named the recipient of the Crusaders Seventh Player Award (given to a Holy Cross hockey player who performed above expectations as voted by his teammates) after leading the team in goals with 15. During his career at Holy Cross, he tallied 20 goals and 18 assists for 38 points and served as co-captain his senior year. Akashian has instructed and been a coach at several of New England s premier hockey camps. He has served as an instructor at the Milton Academy Hockey School and the All-American Hockey Camp. Akashian also works with USA Hockey in the Massachusetts Satellite program and has served as a coach of the Northeast team in Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation s Bay State Games. Akashian, who earned his Juris Doctorate in 2004 from Suffolk University Law School, is married to the former Lauren Murphy 00, who was a captain and standout swimmer for the Crusaders. The Akashians reside in Lowell, Mass., with their son Ned. Rob Godfrey Jason Smith Assistant Coach Second Season Jason Smith is in his second season as an assistant coach at Holy Cross. Smith serves as the recruiting coordinator and works with all positions with an emphasis on forwards. Smith came to Holy Cross from Babson College, where he was as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for four seasons. Babson won the 2007 ECAC East Championship earning its first NCAA Tournament appearance since In total Babson reached the ECAC East Finals in three of the four seasons Smith was a part of the program. He previously served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Salem State College for four years. A native of West Yarmouth, Mass., Smith graduated from Salem State in 1998 where he was a three-year member of the hockey team and was a captain as a junior and senior. Smith led the team in scoring in the season. He also played at UMass-Amherst in the season. Smith and his wife Karen, reside in Braintree, Mass. Rob Godfrey 07 Assistant Coach Second Season Rob Godfrey is in his second season on the Holy Cross staff and his first as an assistant coach. He was the director of hockey operations a season ago. As an assistant coach with the Crusaders, his responsibilities include recruiting and working with all positions with an emphasis on defense. A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and a 2007 graduate of Holy Cross, Godfrey had an outstanding career as a defenseman for the Crusaders. He played in 121 career games with nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points, including four goals and seven assists for 11 points as a senior and four goals and 12 assists for 16 points as a junior. In , Godfrey was named the Atlantic Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman, while he received the Glenn Spike Crane Memorial Award and the Seventh Player Award. 25 Holy Cross Support Staff Jack Moriarty Head Equipment Manager 37th Season Jack Moriarty is now in his 37th year with the Holy Cross athletic department, where he is one of the college s busiest and most popular people. He currently serves as the head equipment manager for all Crusader varsity athletic teams. Moriarty originally came to Holy Cross as both an athletic trainer and equipment manager in He was promoted to head athletic trainer in 1991, before devoting his full time to serving as the head equipment manager in In 1992, Moriarty coordinated the sports sciences area for the NCAA men s basketball first and second round games held at the Worcester Centrum. With his hard work and dedication, he is widely regarded as the backbone behind all Holy Cross athletic teams and is seen at almost every home event. In recognition of his service, Moriarty was inducted into the Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame in Moriarty is a 1971 graduate of Springfield College, where he earned a bachelor s degree in physical education. He and his wife, Kate, reside in Worcester. Jeff Oliver Strength & Conditioning Coach 13th Season Jeff Oliver is in his 13th season as the head strength & conditioning coach for the College of the Holy Cross. Prior to his time with the Crusaders, Oliver spent two seasons at Boston University as an assistant strength coach. He has also served as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the Worcester IceCats, the American Hockey League affiliate of the St. Louis Blues organization. Oliver graduated from Boston College in 1988 with a bachelor s degree in business administration, and was selected to receive the Thomas Scanlon Memorial Award for Scholarship, Leadership and Community Service. He was a four-year letterwinner on the Eagles football team, went on to play for the New York Jets from , then finished his career as an offensive lineman for the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe. He earned his master s degree in education from Boston University in 1996 and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Oliver and his wife, Kate, have four children (Peter, Corinne, Claudia and Keating), and reside in Worcester. John Ostrowski Asst. Athletic Trainer Fourth Season John Ostrowski is in his fourth year as the athletic trainer for the Holy Cross men s hockey team. In addition to working with hockey he works closely with the Crusader football program and provides support for a number of other varsity sports. From , Ostrowski served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Kentucky, working with the swimming and football teams. Ostrowski also served as an athletic trainer for the 2005 NCAA Championship in men s swimming. Prior to his time at Kentucky, he was a student athletic trainer at the University of Michigan, assisting with the track, football, tennis and ice hockey teams. Ostrowski was also an intern with the Boston Red Sox in A certified and licensed member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Ostrowski received his bachelor s degree in athletic training from Michigan in 2003, and his master s degree in kinesiology and health promotion from Kentucky in Ostrowski and his wife Jennifer, reside in Marlborough, Mass. Jim Wrobel Asst. Media Relations Director Fourth Season Jim Wrobel is in his third year as an assistant director of athletic media relations and is in his fourth overall year at Holy Cross. He serves as the department s primary media contact for the men s ice hockey team, in addition to working with the men s and women s golf, men s and women s lacrosse, men s and women s tennis and volleyball squads. Wrobel became a full-time member of the Holy Cross athletic media relations staff in August of 2006, after spending the previous year as an intern in the department. Prior to his time at Holy Cross, Wrobel spent one year as an athletic media relations assistant at the University of Massachusetts, where he worked with the men s soccer, baseball, women s rowing, swimming & diving and water polo teams. In 180 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks, he had 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points. After being recalled from the Cleveland Barons on March 15, 2006, Rissmiller went onto tally five goals and four assists in 29 games, including two goals and an assist in the playoffs. Rissmiller scored the first goal of the game in San Jose s 5-4 win over Nashville in Game Four of the Western Conference Quarterfinals as the Sharks went on to win the series, 4-1. In , he recorded eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in 79 games. In the season, Rissmiller scored seven goals and had 15 assists for a career-best 22 points. He has played in 30 career NHL play off games with three goals and four assists for seven points. Patrick Rissmiller 02 San Jose Sharks & New York Rangers In the season, the Belmont, Mass., native played in four games for the Sharks. He played for Cleveland for four seasons as he is the Barons all-time points leader and all-time assists leader, while he is second in goals. In the season before he was recalled to San Jose, he was second on the team in points with 52 as he posted 15 goals and a team-leading 37 assists. In January, he was selected to play for Planet USA in the 2006 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic. As a four-year Crusader ( ), Rissmiller recorded 53 goals and 90 assists for 143 points in 131 games. He is second on the Holy Cross Division I all-time points and assists lists, while he is tied for fourth in goals. In his senior season, Rissmiller led the Crusaders in assists (30) and points (46) as he was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Holy Cross Men s Ice Hockey

41 Atlantic Hockey / Series Records Atlantic Hockey spans a total of five states. Members reside in Colorado (Air Force), Connecticut (University of Connecticut, Sacred Heart), Massachusetts (American International, Bentley, Holy Cross), New York (Army, Canisius, RIT) and Pennsylvania (Mercyhurst). A new chapter in the history of college hockey was ushered into existence when the Atlantic Hockey Association was created on June 30, 2003, by nine charter members. Robert DeGregorio, a former commissioner of Hockey East, was named the conference s first commissioner. Holy Cross secured the league s first regular season title, and followed up the feat by capturing the tournament championship, sending the Crusaders to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program s, along with the league s, history. In the season, Mercyhurst claimed the tournament championship. In , Holy Cross won its second regular season and tournament title in the last three years. The Crusaders then went onto upset Minnesota in the NCAA West Regional Semifinals with a 4-3 overtime win giving the school and the league its first NCAA victory. For the last two seasons, Air Force has been the conference tournament champion. Success in the classroom is as important as success on the ice among the member institutions of Atlantic Hockey. A total of 129 student-athletes were named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic squad in recognition of their outstanding scholastic achievement. Atlantic Hockey athletes have also contributed their time off the ice to numerous charitable organizations as a way of saying thanks to their many supporters. 44 The Hart Center Home Of The Crusaders The Holy Cross hock ey team moved into its own home in the fall of From its open ing on De c. 2, 1975 to its around-the-clock op er a tion to day, the Hart Rec re ation Cen ter has been a model of ex cel lence for oth er rinks to em u late. The Hart Center was erect ed in hon or of the late Rev. Francis J. Hart, S.J., who was the guid ing force behind the in tra mu ral ath let ic com pe ti tion at Holy Cross for sev er al de cades. In the summer of 2006, the Hart Center was renovated as a brand new ice surface, boards and higher glass were put in, along with new scoreboards. The Crusaders lock er room fa cil i ty was renovated in 2007 with all new lockers. The locker room features a play ers lounge and stateof-the-art vid eo equip ment. The team s weight room is lo cat ed adjacent to the hock ey rink. Over the years, the Hart Cen ter has set the stage for battles against the likes of Boston College, the Uni ver si ty of Maine, Merrimack Col lege, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Notre Dame, while in 2006 the Hart Center hosted the Atlantic Hockey semifinals and finals as the Crusaders won the title. 45 Strength & Conditioning Carol & Park B. Smith Wellness Center Opened in 1997, the Carol and Park B. Smith Wellness Center is a two-story facility which was built as an addition to the Hart Recreation Center. The wellness center provides state-of-the-art fitness equipment for varsity athletes and all other members of the Holy Cross community. A $1.5-million gift from Carol and Park B. Smith (Class of 1954) kicked off the campaign to fund the facility. Everyone today agrees that fitness is very important, Smith said in I m confident that this new Wellness Center whose facilities will be second-to-none will provide a real benefit to current and future Holy Cross students, teachers and staff. With 15,000 square feet, the wellness center provides over four times more space than the college previously had for varsity and community exercise and training, and centralizes athletic equipment and facilities once found in five locations in three campus buildings. The center houses, on the first level, a highly versatile strength and conditioning center for Holy Cross varsity student-athletes. There are areas for speed development programs, as well as for strength and endurance conditioning. The space, which is able to accommodate as many as 60 people at a time, enables Holy Cross larger sports teams to work out together, thereby enhancing team unity. said. And while football may have been the first to grasp the concept, we now train athletes from every varsity sport. The wellness center has been a huge boon to our program. With 6,500 square feet of the center devoted solely to varsity athletes, Oliver and his staff to are able to accommodate a much larger number of athletes at one time, allowing teams to train together at times more convenient to their busy schedules as student-athletes. The state-of-the-art equipment in the wellness center includes eight multi-purpose power racks, each with over 600 pounds of free weights; seven Olympic lifting platforms with over 375 pounds of rubberized free weights; sore than 3,000 pounds of dumbbells; 18 pieces of aerobic equipment; three full sets of plyometric boxes; and a number of free weight-loaded pieces of equipment to accommodate injured athletes. Thanks to the generous donation from the Smiths, Oliver said, This facility is state of the art. The second floor has been designed for use by all students, faculty and staff. It has two sections: one for aerobic training, and the other for cardiovascular, variable-resistance and strength training. A diverse selection of equipment accommodates users ranging from beginners to advanced athletes. Its south-facing wall is mostly glass, allowing most users a view of the practice fields and the rolling hills of central New England. The center also offers programs that explore the connections between fitness and wellness, to help students learn how good health can complement and enhance other aspects of their educational experience. An advisory board comprising physicians, fitness and strength trainers, faculty members, psychologists, nutritionists, a college chaplain and others are responsible for creating and coordinating programming for the center. Holy Cross head strength and conditioning coach Jeff Oliver believes that the wellness center is of the utmost importance to Crusader athletic teams. 46 Community Service Every year the Holy Cross hockey program supports the surrounding community in multiple ways. Throughout the season the Crusaders will visit local schools, conduct clinics and participate in the Walk for Cancer. Each fall the team takes part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a learn-to-skate program at the Hart Center for deaf children from the local community. During the season, the team visits the Grafton Street Elementary School, where they discuss the benefits of having an education with the fifth and sixth graders, and they take part in career days. The team is also a part of the Crusaders for Kids program. The program was initiated in January of 2006 and involves players bringing inner city kids to Holy Cross sporting events. For the Holy Cross hockey team, raising money for cancer research has taken on a new meaning after losing two teammates, Glenn Spike Crane ( ) and John Daniel Bombard ( ), to cancer. Over the past five years, the Crusaders teamed up with other members of the Holy Cross community and took part in the Walk for Cancer, a five-mile walk around Lake Quinsigamond. WASHINGTON SEMESTER Each semester, 15 juniors and first-semester seniors are accepted into a highly selective program in the nation s capital. Students work with members of congress or federal agencies, assist advocacy and public policy groups, and explore up-close the arts, history and culture of Washington, D.C. With support from their Holy Cross advisor, students pursue internships that consist of four full work days, and a public policy seminar one night each week. On the fifth weekday, they conduct independent research for their Washington thesis paper. STUDY ABROAD Students looking to broaden their Holy Cross experience have an excellent opportunity to do so through the Study Abroad program. Year-long programs provide qualified students with exciting and fully credited extensions of the college s curriculum at participating universities in: Australia, Austria, Cameroon, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Scotland, Spain and Russia. 51 The City of Worcester Worcester, the economic and social center of central Massachusetts, is New England s third-largest city with a population of 176,000. Holy Cross is one of the area s 13 colleges and universities, which together make an enormous impact on the area s culture and economy. Boston, Springfield, Hartford and Providence are all about a one-hour drive. New York City is about three hours away; Cape Cod and the Atlantic Ocean are less then two hours from Worcester; and the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire can be reached in about three hours. Skiing is available at nearby Wachusett Mountain, and water sports enthusiasts can enjoy the hundreds of rivers and lakes in the area, including Lake Quinsigamond. First incorporated as a township in 1722, this settlement 40 miles west of Boston soon became an important transportation center on the Boston Turnpike, linking the capital city with New York and the west. One of America s first internal commercial waterways, the Blackstone Canal, linked the town with Providence to the south and gave direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. Primarily an industrial city through the mid-20th century, Worcester has emerged as an educational, medical, health care, cultural and entertainment center. An expanded business and commercial base, and the recent addition of a variety of high-technology companies and growing biotechnology research parks, have made Worcester attractive to expanding companies. Downtown Worcester stands on the brink of a dramatic renaissance with a new hotel attached to the convention center, a new courthouse and major housing and retail projects all in the works. Worcester is nonetheless predominantly residential in character. More than 1,200 acres of city-owned parkland are found within its 38 square miles. Half of the entire city budget goes for educational purposes, testimony to the values of its inhabitants. Its parklands are among the oldest in the nation, as are its library and music festival. Worcester is a city proud of its past and secure in its future. An All-American City Capping off months of community-wide effort, the city of Worcester was named a winner of the 2000 All-America City Award by the National Civic League on June 3, Truly, Worcester is a community of heroes. Hoover credited the spirit and dedication of all the participants on Worcester s All-America team with the victory, which is the city s fifth such award. To be named an All-America City, a community must be able to demonstrate successful resolution of community issues through collaborative effort. Communities must list three projects where local business, government and nonprofit organizations have worked together to tangibly improve the lives of their community s residents. Worcester s presentation, A Community of Heroes, highlighted three of Worcester s outstanding service programs. The projects that we have promoted here YouthNet, the Beacon Brightly Project and the Worcester Free Medical Service program are examples of how we draw together to make the lives of our citizens better every day, continued Hoover. A strong and vibrant community is a reflection of its citizenry, and for that, Worcester stands proudly as a community of heroes. Founded in 1894, the National Civic League is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to strengthening citizen democracy by transforming democratic institutions, which accomplishes its mission through various objectives and the All-America City Award the nation s oldest and most prestigious community recognition program. The All-America City Award, which since 1949 has recognized the efforts of extraordinary communities, recognizes exemplary grassroots community problem solving and is given to communities that cooperatively tackle challenges and achieve results. 52 Holy Cross Administration Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., President tems. He continued his research while teaching at Boston College for 10 years as an associate professor of computer science. In addition to creating new courses in ethics and computers, computer architecture and digital systems, he created a laboratory for digital electronics and developed tutorial materials for a course on computers in management. Fr. McFarland has published articles in the Proceedings of the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers); the IEEE Transactions on Computers; the IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems; Formal Methods for System Design; the Journal of Systems and Software; Computer; and Technology and Society. He was an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems for three years and has been on numerous program committees for conferences such as the Design Automation Conference, the International Conference on Computer Design, the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design and the High-Level Synthesis Workshop. In addition to his duties as Holy Cross president, Fr. McFarland sits on numerous local boards, including the Worcester Catholic Charities Board, the Worcester Municipal Research Bureau and the Board of Trustees at the University of Scranton. Recently, Fr. McFarland oversaw the most successful capital campaign in school history, raising a total of $216.3 million. Fr. McFarland enjoys running six days each week in his free time. Officers of the College On July 1, 2000, Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., became the 31st president of the College of the Holy Cross. Prior to becoming president, Fr. McFarland was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. He was at Gonzaga for four years, where he was also a professor of computer science. Born in Boston in 1948, Fr. McFarland lived for a time in California and later graduated from Xavier High School (now closed) in Concord, Mass. He completed his bachelor s degree in physics at Cornell University in He later earned a master s degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering (computer engineering) at Carnegie Mellon University. Fr. McFarland joined the Jesuits in He studied at the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., and earned a master s degree in divinity and Th.M. in social ethics. 53 Holy Cross Athletic Department Richard M. Regan, Jr., Director of Athletics Richard M. Regan, Jr., is now in his 11th year as the director of athletics at Holy Cross. Regan, whose tenure began on July 1, 1998, became just the fourth Holy Cross athletic director in the last 50 years. He is smart, full of energy, skilled in financial management and fully committed to Holy Cross, said then Holy Cross president Fr. Gerard Reedy, S.J., at the time of Regan s hiring. Regan s first 10 years have been productive ones for the Crusaders. During this period of time, 18 Holy Cross teams have advanced to NCAA tournament play including at least one team in each of his first nine seasons. The women s basketball team has been to the postseason in seven of the last 10 years (six NCAA appearances and a WNIT berth in 2002), while the field hockey (1998 and 2000) and women s soccer (2000) programs have also made NCAA appearances. Regan s tenure has also seen the first-ever NCAA appearances for the men s ice hockey (2004 and 2006), men s soccer (2002) and women s lacrosse (2006 and 2007) teams. In 1999, Regan hired Ralph Willard as the men s basketball coach, a move which revitalized the program. The Crusaders have advanced to postseason play in five of the last eight years, and became the first Patriot League team ever to advance to the NCAA tournament in three consecutive seasons (2001, 2002 and 2003). Success is not measured only by wins and losses, but by other gains as well. In an effort to further increase the number of Crusader teams coached by full-time staff members, Regan announced the appointment of full-time coaching positions in track, volleyball, women s lacrosse and softball. Gender equity has been a major focus of Regan s administration and he introduced the college s first two new varsity sports in more than 15 years women s ice hockey and women s golf. Improvements to the athletics facilities have also been part of Regan s focus. The new Linda Johnson Smith Stadium is home to not only the men s and women s soccer teams, but its unique two-sided stands and press facilities provide an additional benefit to home events for field hockey, men s lacrosse, women s lacrosse and outdoor track and field. The baseball team opened a new on-campus stadium beginning in the fall of And there have been improvements to other facilities as well, such as the softball field, the men s ice hockey locker room, and a video room for the men s and women s basketball teams. In addition to his duties on campus, Regan has become involved in college athletic policy on a national scale. From , he served a four-year term as a Division I-AA representative on the NCAA Division I Management Council. The Management Council, comprised of 49 athletic administrators and faculty athletic representatives from around the nation, reports directly to the NCAA s Division I Board of Directors. The council is responsible for adopting operating bylaws and rules to govern Division I, interpreting Division I bylaws, reviewing recommendations from the Division I conferences and universities, and developing and implementing the Division I budget. Prior to returning to Worcester in July of 1998, Regan worked for NFL International and NFL Europe (formerly the World League of American Football). He joined the New York office of the World League in 1991 and was based in London beginning in Over the next several years he lived in London and Edinburgh, and served as managing director of the Scottish Claymores, vice president of European operations and chief operating officer. When the World League went through a reorganization following the 1992 season, National Football League commissioner Paul Tagliabue appointed Regan as managing director of NFL International, Ltd., to oversee and develop the NFL s business interests throughout Europe. In that role, he was instrumental in establishing NFL International in Europe and planning and executing the NFL s American Bowl series of international games in London, Dublin, Barcelona and Berlin. Regan held the post of managing director of Monarch International, Inc., a licensing and financial consulting firm, for three years before joining the World League. After graduating from Holy Cross in 1976, Regan spent nine years working for Arthur Andersen & Company in its Boston, Mass., offices, rising to the level of senior manager. He then moved to the NFL with the New England Patriots, where he served in the role of Vice President of Finance from His ties to Mount St. James run deep, as he is the third generation of his family to attend Holy Cross. He is the son of Richard M. Regan (Class of 1950), and the grandson of Harold J. Regan (Class of 1917). Regan s sisters, Mary (Class of 1977) and Ann (Class of 1980), also Athletic Dept. Staff graduated from Holy Cross. His daughter, Deirdre, graduated from Holy Cross in Born in Providence, R.I., Regan and his wife, Judi, have three daughters Jennifer, Deirdre and Colleen. Bill Bellerose Associate Athletic Director Bill Bellerose was named associate director of athletics and business manager of athletics for Holy Cross in November of A 1977 graduate of Holy Cross with a dual degree in Economics and Accounting, Bellerose handles the day to day financial support of individual teams and the athletic department. He is responsible for preparing and administering the budgets for all 27 varsity sports. Bellerose also handles equipment inventories, and much of Holy Cross travel and ticket operations. Prior to his current appointment, Bellerose was the college s purchasing director for four years, coordinating purchases for all departments on campus. From 1988 through 1993, Bellerose also served as the head coach of the Crusader men s ice hockey team. He previously spent time as an assistant coach of the squad from During his days as an undergraduate, Bellerose was a member of the ice hockey team. He still ranks eighth all-time in career points (152) and 10th all-time in career goals scored (71). In 2002, Bellerose was inducted into the Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame.
