Introduction Thank you for taking the time to read through this booklet to find out the many ways England Hockey can help your organisation to fulfil the PE & Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). This information booklet is dedicated to Schools & Education partners and is designed to highlight the opportunities, initiatives and support England Hockey can offer to your organisation to support the work you are undertaking in working towards the five hour offer. England Hockey has dedicated time and energy into developing areas of connectivity which drive the development of more young people into the sport of Hockey. Our work includes developing an Infrastructure which increases opportunity and provision for all young people within schools and clubs, maximising the chance they have of fulfilling their potential. The new game of Quicksticks provides a fun, safe and exciting opportunity to play Hockey in primary schools, and directly addresses the reasons why Hockey hasn t been played in the majority of our primary schools. This links into the competition framework and back to the infrastructure. The Model of Connectivity (which you can see on the next page) displays the essential need for these development areas to operate synonymously, to maximise the opportunities for young people to take part in the sport of Hockey. To support the pathway for players, umpires, coaches and volunteers it is vital that clubs provide a safe, effective and child friendly environment and we have developed a robust accreditation system. Following from this we have a valued Club School Link programme to benefit young people who want to continue Hockey out of school hours. Throughout the booklet, you will find a link to take you straight to the dedicated place on our website for that particular aspect of the game, but should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on In addition, we have qualifications for young leaders and professionals to improve the delivery of Hockey within the pathway.

Infrastructure The Single System Hockey in England has evolved over many years and has many historical boundaries, systems and competitions that make the hockey landscape a complicated one. In July 2006, after extensive consultation, the England Hockey Board approved the implementation of the Single System. Subsequently, England Hockey Development and Performance Departments have been working with Regional & County Associations, and other partners, to plan the introduction of the different elements of the Single System framework; due to be implemented from August Currently, the pathway varies enormously, not only between boys and girls, but also from region to region and county to county. For example, a 14-year-old living in Exeter would have a different experience moving through the pathway to a similar player living in Hull. The purpose of the Single System is to make opportunities for participants fair, equitable and consistent. It is to ensure that a suitable level of coaching and competition is offered for people at the appropriate stage of their development and to maximise the chance they have of fulfilling their potential whether that potential is as a club or international player, coach or official. England Hockey s Single System contains a development pathway (see diagram) through which players, coaches and officials of all ages and abilities can reach their full potential. It is based on a set of principles that puts the participant at the centre and is based on scientific research that has been accepted by several other major sports within England. Centralised Calendar & Coaching & Talent ID syllabus The success of delivering the pathway is reliant upon a centralised season of competition and training to prevent young people being pulled in all different directions. To this end England Hockey will be introducing a centralised calendar for season 2009/10. The Institute of Youth Sport continue research for us on identifying talent in hockey and this work will underpin the coaching syllabus and talent identification protocols.

ClubsFirst The Kitemark for Clubs ClubsFirst is the England Hockey accreditation scheme for clubs. It is a national recognition of clubs that can demonstrate that they are working towards minimum operating standards, and have a safe, effective and child friendly environment for all to be involved in hockey. All clubs achieving ClubsFirst also achieve the Sport England Clubmark accreditation. For a list of Clubs who have gained the accreditation go to www. englandhockey.co.uk. County Sports Partnerships and Funding agencies are increasingly recognising accredited clubs and choosing to work with them as a priority. There are also a range of benefits, priority bookings and other services available to ClubsFirst clubs. Kettering Hockey Club have been through the accreditation process and said after gaining the kitemark: We found working towards and achieving England Hockey ClubsFirst an enlightening and rewarding experience and I believe that we are a better club as a result J Randle - Kettering HC Assessment & information pack Welcome & Introduction Developing Young Safeguarding & People in Hockey Protecting Young People Sports Equity and Ethics Club Management The Assessment Process Healthchecks

Club-School Links We currently have about 30,000 young people playing in our hockey clubs! Clubs linking to School Sports Partnerships are key to ensuring that the first stepping stone on the playing, umpiring, managing or volunteering pathway is easy for young people who want to get involved in hockey outside of their school environment. Thanks to the hard work of many clubs, at the beginning of the 2008 season there were 127 clubs who had achieved their ClubsFirst Accreditation and nearly 100 of those clubs have signed agreements to develop more opportunities with School Sports Partnerships. Of these, 27 clubs have benefited from facility investment in the last few years through the Community Club Development Programme (CCDP) fund. Publicity and promotion of hockey within the school, club and externally through the media. For example, the art & design curriculum could facilitate the promotion of hockey within the partnership Funding support with access to funding where a link enhances a funding bid application or where a club can share resources. Accessing funds that schools are not eligible for and community groups are, and vice versa Benefits for young people in Hockey The fundamental aim of a Club School Link is to develop the very best level of quality and opportunity for young people both in and out of school. England Hockey continues to encourage ClubsFirst accredited clubs to establish a formal link with local School Sport Partnership(s). With the assistance from local Development Officers, CSP s and England Hockey Regional Staff, these formal club school links will be a driving force in the delivery of Hockey within local areas. By extending the opportunity for young people to continue their sporting development beyond the school PE curriculum, hockey clubs can enhance the opportunities for young people to develop into high quality players, leaders, managers and coaches. It will also allow athletes and potential athletes from nonhockey playing schools to have an opportunity to join the sport of hockey. Benefits for the partnership To increase the number of young people participating in hockey and to give them more opportunities to play the game, both within school and out of school hours To improve Coach/Teacher Education for both club and school staff To improve opportunities and education for pupils and staff in umpiring and officiating Leadership for pupils opportunities to work alongside coaches and other trained club officers as well as formal awards such as the Leadership and Leadership Plus Access to sponsorship bringing existing and new sponsor relationships to the partnership CSL Benefits Package 50% funding for 20 candidates on the Leadership course resources. 50% funding for 10 candidates on a Coaching for Teachers course resources Use of the EH Ambassador scheme An A2 Hockey Poster for every school within the Partnership. A CD-rom Resource for each Club and SSP including downloads and templates to assist delivery of hockey to young people. Possibility to be nominated to CCPR for The Sports Club of the Year Awards. 13 Leadership & Volunteering England Hockey currently runs a Leadership Award Programme. This programme has been developed by a team of professional and volunteer hockey personnel. It aims to provide parents, students, teachers, players and other potential leaders with a basic knowledge of the key areas of hockey (umpiring, coaching and managing) alongside the confidence to introduce and develop aspects of the game safely to players. There are no prerequisites to participating in the programme (other than minimum age of 13 years) as it is specifically designed for potential leaders who have little delivery or playing experience. The programme consists of practical and theory sessions intended to allow participants the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in a structured learning environment. The programme may be delivered as a stand alone course called the Hockey Leadership Award or as independent bolt-on modules alongside the SL UK L1 Community Sports Leadership. LEADERSHIP AWARD Module A Principles of Leadership (two hours) OR SL UK L1 in Community Sports Leadership Module B Foundation Umpire Award (four hours) (Plus optional bolt-on assessments 15 minutes per candidate) You don t need to be a sporting superstar to get involved. No qualifications are required to start the course, and while there are challenges and some tests, it s all fun, it s all rewarding and it will genuinely support your development and enjoyment of hockey. Module C Foundation Coach Award (four hours) It can really boost your confidence and help you in work, education, sport and life. Course structure The course consists of a blend of practical sessions with supporting theory. When delivered solely as a Hockey Leadership Award it should be a minimum of 14 hours contact time, with a large part of this pitch based. Module D Foundation Manager Award (four hours) OR SL UK L1 in Community Sports Leadership 13

Leadership and Volunteering continued... The awards can be delivered in a variety of ways and by a variety of institutions. A delegate need not study all modules alongside each other, and may have a variety of delivery mechanisms. E.g. via the curriculum, extra-curricular studies, School Sport Partnership, County Sport Partnership, Local Education Authority, Clubs etc. Volunteer pathway England Hockey is developing a new volunteer pathway which will be rolled out from March Keep an eye on the website for further details. Delivery example 1: Candidates undertake all four EH modules A, B, C & D and achieve the England Hockey Leadership Award (14hrs). Delivery example 2: Candidates undertake a SL UK L1 in Community Sports Leadership and modules B and C. Candidates will be awarded the England Hockey Leadership Award, if in conjunction they have achieved the SL UK award (8 hrs plus SL UK L1 course). Delivery example 3: Candidates undertake a SL UK L1 Community Sports Leadership and one module (B or C) as a specified bolt-on. They stop and take no further modules, and are awarded a foundation certificate in their chosen area (Umpiring or Coaching) by England Hockey, if in conjunction they have achieved the SL UK award (4hrs plus SL UK L1 course). From here SL UK L1 Community Sports Leaders only could go on to study the remaining foundation module and achieve the England Hockey Leadership Award. Delivery example 4: Candidates undertake a 2hr generic leadership/volunteer module (A) and one module (B, C or D) as a specified option. They stop and take no further modules, and are awarded a foundation certificate in their chosen area (Umpiring, Coaching or Management) by England Hockey (6hrs). From here they could go on to study the remaining two foundation modules and achieve the England Hockey Leadership Award (8hrs). 14

Title Extending Activity The Available Opportunities England Hockey has a variety of adapted games underpinning the traditional eleven a side game, to make Hockey available to all ages and abilities. These official games are Quicksticks, Mini Hockey, Indoor Hockey and Zone Hockey. The following few pages briefly explain these four delivery mechanisms. Supported by 49 illustrated Challenge Cards which introduce the game gradually and a full 88-page Curriculum Resource which includes six-weeks worth of lesson plans for the whole Key Stage 2 curriculum, Quicksticks can be played or taught by anyone! The general philosophy is to have fun whilst learning and developing core skills. After over two years in development, the game of Quicksticks and its supporting Challenges is now ready for action! As well as the resources, special kit has also been developed to support the game. Although Quicksticks and its supporting Challenges can be played with existing hockey equipment, the new sticks and oversized lightweight ball which will be available from the end of October from Davies Sports will further aid the introduction of hockey to absolute beginners. You can also buy smaller goals through Samba Sports see Research has shown that there is very little hockey being played in primary schools with teachers who have no prior knowledge of the game reluctant to introduce it because of fears that the sport is dangerous or it is too complicated to deliver. The belief also exists that unless the school has an astro-turf pitch, then they cannot teach hockey. England Hockey has listened to these issues and has created Quicksticks specifically to address the reasons behind the lack of hockey in primary schools. The Curriculum Resource and Challenge Cards are available for purchase now at a special introductory price. You can buy the Challenge Cards and Curriculum Resource together for (RRP 89.99), or you can get the Challenge Card pack by itself for (RRP 49.99)...so what are you waiting for?! For more information on Quicksticks, visit The field of play is the size of a standard netball court and a team consists of six players; four outfield pitch players and two officials (one manager/coach and one umpire). All players must rotate with the two officials roles within the game... there are NO GOALKEEPERS in the game of Quicksticks! Played in three periods (so that all players have a go at playing, managing and umpiring), one game can last up to 30 minutes for 11 year-olds. At the lower end of the scale, games can last just over 20 minutes for 7-8 year-olds. This is a target game, a bit like ten pin bowling! Challenge Card 14 Skittles 1) Get some skittles and set them out in a line with gaps between each one. 2) Get into pairs and stand opposite each other so that the skittles are in the middle of you. 3) You can have two pairs to each set of skittle if you want. 4) Try and knock down as many skittles as you can. If you miss the skittle and the ball goes through a gap, then your partner on the other side should stop the ball and then they should try and hit a skittle. 5) The winning team is the one who has knocked down most of the skittles when the time is up. 6) To make it a bit more difficult, make the gap between the skittles smaller. If you need to make it a bit easier, make the gap between the skittles bigger. Remember * Only use the flat side of the stick (if this is the Quicksticks stick, this is the green side) * Look up and try not to kick the ball! Teaching Points Equipment Passing and Scoring * Children should be encouraged to look up and see where they are passing the ball or shooting to * Try and encourage the children to have a balanced body position whilst they pass or shoot * To pass or shoot over longer distances, children should be encouraged to: * have a wider grip * bend their knees and be lower * turn sideways (like when batting at cricket, baseball or rounders) * Encourage children to either push the ball or have a flat/low back swing with a hit the head of the stick can stay close to or on the ground for the whole movement * Wider grip with the hands on the stick * Encourage children to bend their knees and get low. The flatter the stick, the more of the stick surface can stop the ball * Receive the ball onto the flat (green) side of the stick with soft hands * Encourage using the flat (green) side of the stick at all times * Encourage children to move their feet quickly to get their stick into position or turn the stick Receiving the ball and keeping control * Skittles these can be made out of recycled plastic drink bottles with sand or water in them. * One stick per person * One ball per pair Adaptations Easier Harder S Make the skittles closer together / bigger skittles T Move closer to the targets E Bigger ball / skittles P Put two / three players at each side of the gate S Make the skittles farther apart / smaller skittles T Move farther away from the targets E Smaller ball / skittles P Put one player at each side of the gate Challenge Cards England Hockey 17

Extending Activity continued... Quicksticks Equipment Quicksticks can be played with existing equipment that schools have. However, as many primary schools don t have hockey equipment we have worked with Davies Sports to design specific Quicksticks kit. A Quicksticks Kit Bag includes 30 Hockey sticks (size range 30, 32 & 34 ), 30 Quicksticks balls, 12 Quicksticks Bibs. The Quicksticks sticks have been designed to have teaching aids on the artwork, for example the playing side is green to aid the development of using the flat side of the stick. There will be a hand print on a shorter grip to enable the correct positioning of the left hand on the stick. There will be two zones speed & strength to aid the development of right hand positioning for various skills. target goals from the football set that schools may already own can be made into one Quicksticks Goal. Quicksticks nets and goals can be purchased from Samba Sports at The price is including vat and carriage. The Quicksticks ball (which is larger and lighter than a normal hockey ball) has been specifically designed for use on various surfaces including tarmac traditionally found in Primary School play grounds. Please note England Hockey will not stock or sell any of the Quicksticks Equipment (although the Challenge Cards and Curriculum Resource will be available from England Hockey). Quicksticks Kit Bags can be purchased directly from Davies Sports at The cost of the equipment bag will be VAT Quicksticks equipment can also be purchased separately (through Davies Sports): Quicksticks Sticks VAT (Carriage charges 7.95 for orders under 350) Quicksticks Balls VAT (Carriage charges 7.95 for orders under 350) The Quicksticks goals have been specifically designed at 8ft wide x 2ft high, so that schools can use existing Samba Football goals provided by the Football 18 Foundation and Youth Sports Trust to over 18,000 primary schools. Two of the Zone Hockey Zone Hockey is an adapted version of hockey that can include players of all abilities. It is ideal for players with special needs, but offers opportunities for integration with the able bodied. It is a five-a-side game and can be played both outside on a hard surface, on a quarter of an artificial turf pitch, or inside a sports hall. The combination of small-sided teams and adapted playing areas ensure a type of involvement in the game that will provide children with enjoyment and success. Girls and boys, both disabled (suitable for electric wheelchair users, manual wheelchair users, ambulant and semi-ambulant youngsters) or non-disabled, can participate side by side in what is a high scoring, fast moving, fun game of hockey.

Mini Hockey Mini Hockey is a seven-a-side game played across half of a full sized hockey pitch. The small sided teams and adapted playing areas ensure a type of involvement in the game that will provide young people with enjoyment and success. Girls and boys can participated side by side in what is a high scoring, fast moving, fun game of hockey. While it is appreciated that some young players will play 11 a side hockey before they are thirteen, England Hockey recommends that small sided game forms the introductory part of a players development. The mini hockey format provides an ideal stepping stone for young players to progress from Quicksticks towards the full game of hockey. Indoor Hockey Hockey is played mainly outdoors but there is a variation of the game played indoors (six-a-side). The indoor game is less popular in England than other parts of the world but offers an even faster version of the game and provides the country with the biggest annual domestic event in the form of the National Indoor Hockey Championships. Indoor is a great way to develop a player s skills as the game is fast and the players are required to play under pressure and quickly. Equipment & Facilities There are specialised sticks and balls used, and the size of the pitch differs. An indoor pitch is twenty by for forty metres. Equipment & Facilities Although the pitch is smaller, full sized goals are used. A lighter ball is used however it is the same size; players also use a standard regulation hockey stick. In the interest of safety goalkeepers must wear full goalkeeping kit. For further information and rules go to and click on the Umpire section within the Officiating pages. 19

Competitions Framework England Hockey has undergone a review of all youth competition structures to produce a framework for all ages and abilities, linked to the development needs of young players. This will be adopted from 2009/10 season. The Priority Youth Competitions and Centralised Calendar is a major component of the Single System for Hockey. This sets out a long term vision for a consistent, open and transparent system for hockey in England, which will assist hockey to develop an integrated system that will enable players, coaches and officials to achieve their potential, whether this is at school, club or representative level. It will also prevent the overplaying of talented youngsters providing a structured, cohesive and progressive calendar of competitions. The competition framework begins with multi skills activity through Key Stage 1, which is then progressed to sport specific activity in Key Stage 2 through Quicksticks Challenges and Festivals. Quicksticks is available NOW and is England Hockey s priority for introducing the game at Key Stage 2. Alongside Quicksticks, Mini Hockey will continue to be used for more advanced development at Key Stage 2 through to Key Stage 3. At Key Stage 3, Mini Hockey can be used as a development game leading into the full 11-a-side game for advanced development and Key Stage 4 delivery. Throughout the framework there will be opportunity for Intra and Inter school competition at varying levels; from school, partnership, county, regional through to national level. The key features of the framework will be: Progression through four-a-side (Quicksticks) to seven-a-side (Mini) to 11- a- side (Full) matches Core age groups for schools competition as: U9 (Yr 4), U11 (Yr 6), U13 (Yr 8), U14 (Yr 9), U16 (Yr 11) U18 (Yr 13) using 1st September age eligibility Core age groups for club competition as: U9, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 using 1st January age qualification County standard competition to commence from U13-U17 and Regional standard from U14-U18 A complete separation of school and club competitions to reflect the differing age qualification date and reduce the potential of conflict for players The framework model includes school and club competitions for 2009 onwards, displaying the whole single system. Brief supporting notes (SN) are also included but for a full guide on the competitions framework visit England Hockey will support the development and delivery of the competition framework by: Producing a comprehensive guide (including templates) for local organisers of youth competitions to assist the changeover from existing competition programmes Engaging with the Competition Manager network in School Sports Partnerships to assist the delivery of local schools based competitions Working with Regional and County Associations in the development of Youth Panels to assist in providing resource for organisation and umpiring of youth competitions Producing guidance regarding quantity and priority of activity for talented players to reduce potential for overplaying following the separation of school and club competitions 27

Ran as open county round with winners progressing onto Regional round. SN13 I Inter-School U16, U18 National Indoor Championships (County, Regional & National) Played to FIH Indoor Hockey rules and England Hockey regulations. Ran as open county round with winners progressing onto Regional and then National rounds. SN14 I Junior Development Centres (JDCs) These will provide coaching for young players aged at sub county level and will provide more coaching closer to home. The Development team has been working with our County Hockey Associations (CHAs) and the County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) and most of our CHAs are well advanced in putting together development plans that include setting up 130 JDCs across the country. SN15 I Junior Academy Centres (JACs) These will provide coaching for young players from under age groups at county level and will provide more coaching closer to home. The Development team has been working with our County Hockey Associations (CHAs) and the County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) and most of our CHAs are well advanced in putting together development plans that include setting up over 40 JACs across the country. By utilising 12 centres and England Hockey coaches and young people will be given the opportunity to access elite coaching closer to home which will also improve the selection process. This will include ongoing assessment rather than the one off procedure at a National Tournament. SN17 I EH Futures Cup Players will be selected from their JRPCs to attend the EH Futures Cup. This will act as the final stage of assessment for the JRPC activity and England U16 and U18 training squads will be selected after this tournament. Players with the potential to play at International level will attend further assessment and development camps. SN16 I Junior Regional Performance Centres (JRPCs) These will provide regular coaching from both RHA and England Hockey Centrally Contracted Coaches (CCCs) leading to a High Performance Assessment Camp (HiPACs) for U15s and U17s and inter JRPC competition at U16 and U18 age groups. 31
