SCOUTING NO. 8 VIRGINIA TECH Virginia Tech will open its home schedule against the Tribe. The Hokies opened the season with three straight victories, including wins over Navy, UMBC and St. John s. Tech advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago and is ranked as high as No. 8 in the lastest national polls. Soccer America ranked the Hokies in the eighth spot. The Hokies defeated No. 17 St. John s, 2-1, on Sept. 2. It marked only the 11th loss for St. John s at home in the last 16 seasons. 3 AT VIRGINIA TECH/VS. VMI PAGE 3 COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STANDINGS (AS OF SEPT. 3) CONFERENCE William and Mary is all-time against the Hokies, including a 4-0 mark in Blacksburg. The two squads last met during the 2004 season and played to a 0-0 draw in Williamsburg. The last time W&M and Virginia Tech met in Blacksburg, the Tribe notched a 3-1 victory during the 1994 season. SCOUTING VMI The Keydets are 0-2 on the young season following losses to LIU (3-0) and Appalachian State (5-2) in Radford, Va., on Aug. 26. VMI will host Southern Virginia on Sept. 4, before making the trek to Williamsburg. VMI returns eight starters and 20 letterwinners from a season ago. John Sollock and Thomas Upton have each started one contest for the Keydets. Sollock took the loss against LIU, recording four saves, while Upton recorded five stops against Appalachian State. Charles Nweke scored both VMI goals against Appalachian State. W&M owns a 14-1 all-time record against VMI, winning the last eight matches between the two schools. The Tribe has outscored the Keydets, 59-10, over the series history. Last season, W&M traveled to Lexington, Va., and notched a 2-1 victory thanks to a pair of goals from forward Jarrett Thomas. The Tribe is 7-0 alltime against VMI in Williamsburg. The Keydets were the first opponent for the Tribe at Albert-Daly Field in W&M defeated VMI, 2-1, on Sept. 4, 2004, with current senior Brendan McCurdy scoring the first ever goal at the facility. For his career, the Alexandria, Va., native has five assists. RETURN TO HEALTH After missing the majority of the 2005 season with an injury, senior forward Pat Scherder has shown he is back to full strength in Against Stony Brook, Scherder not only iced the game with his second-half goal, but started for the first time in nearly a year. Scherder last started a match on Sept. 9, 2005 against Clemson. The Vienna, Va., native earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-region accolades as a junior in 2004, but missed the final 15 games of last season. The speedy forward leads all current Tribe players in career goals with 17. After enjoying a successful return to the pitch over the summer with the Williamsburg Legacy of the PDL, Scherder wasted little time finding his scoring touch. In the Tribe s lone exhibition of the season, Scherder found the back of the net in the 37th minute against Navy, giving the Tribe a 1-0 cushion During the PDL season, Scherder finished second on the Legacy in points (11) and goals (5). He notched a pair of two-goal games for Williamsburg, including the final one against Raleigh Elite on July 21. In the game against Raleigh Elite, the Legacy overcame a three-goal first-half deficit to forge a tie. Scherder scored the final two Legacy goals in the 51st and 54th minutes. In total, Scherder started all 15 games in which he appeared, racking up 1074 minutes. MARCHING UP THE CLEAN SHEET LIST Senior goalkeeper Kris Rake recorded his first shutout of the season and the 12th of his career with three saves in the Tribe s home-opening win over Stony Brook. The shutout moved Rake into a tie for fifth on the W&M career shutouts list. His 12th clean sheet equaled the total of Trevor Upton ( ). HAPPY HELPER Junior midfielder Doug Ernst tied his career high with two assists in the Tribe s 2-0 victory over Stony Brook. Ernst served a ball to sophomore forward Andrew Hoxie at the six-yard box from the right flank in the 32nd minute, before setting senior forward Pat Scherder on a one-on-one with the SBU goalkeeper in the 88th minute. During the 2005 season, Ernst equaled a Tribe FRESHMAN STARTERS Freshmen Price Thomas and Roger Bothe have wasted little time making a significant impact on the W&M program. Thomas has played every minute for the Tribe at the attacking midfield position. While the Charlottesville, Va., native has yet to find the scoring column, he has added a flare and creativity to the Tribe attack. He narrowly missed scoring the equalizer on a dipping free kick that hit off the crossbar against then-no. 24 South Carolina on Sept. 2. Bothe, the Gatorade Virginia State Player of the Year, has appeared in all four Tribe games, including starts in the last three at back. The Chester, Va., native has shown solid skills defending as well as the ability to make runs up the field to get into the W&M attack.

4 AT VIRGINIA TECH/VS. VMI PAGE 4 SOLID MIDDLE The center of the W&M defense is held down by a duo of seniors in Brendan McCurdy and Jeff Marklin. During the spring, head coach Chris Norris moved McCurdy, a forward during his first three years, to center back in an effort to solidify the middle of the Tribe defense. Playing along side three-year starter in Marklin, the pair have provided a scrappy spark to the middle of the defense. Despite a pair of early season losses to top-20 foes, the Tribe defense held tough. The College limited then-no. 16 Wake Forest to only one goal after the Demon Deacons erupted for five in their season-opener against Central Florida. The pair was an integral part of the Tribe s first shutout of the season against defending America East Champion Stony Brook. The defensive duo carried over its summer success playing for the PDL s Williamsburg Legacy to the Tribe s fall season. Marklin and McCurdy paired as center backs for a Legacy defense that finished the regular season with a goals against average of 1.25 and five shutouts. During the 16-game slate, the Legacy only allowed 20 goals, which ranked 14th in the 59-team PDL and third in the Eastern Conference. Marklin played in 11 matches with seven starts, totaling 701 minutes in the Legacy defense. McCurdy was a constant for the Williamsburg squad in the back as he started 16 matches and played the maximum 1440 minutes during those contests. HOXIE ENJOYING THE HOME PITCH Sophomore forward Andrew Hoxie definitely enjoys the home pitch of Albert-Daly Field. During the opening 10 games of his career at home, the Newport News, Va., native has scored five of his six career goals at home. Both Hoxie s two career gamewinners have come at home through the early stages of his sophomore campaign. In fact, Hoxie notched the game-winner in the home opener each of the last two seasons. He recorded a pair of goals against Saint Joseph s a season ago, before tallying the game-winner against Stony Brook on Aug. 30. W&M-ODU TELEVISED ON FSC The Tribe s Oct. 26 road contest with Old Dominion gained a little more importance, as it was announced as part of the NSCAA and Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) College Soccer Game of the Week television package for the 2006 season. The W&M- ODU rivalry at the 4,000-seat ODU soccer Stadium will be televised live on FSC as part of the 12-game Thursday/Friday night package. In June of 2006, FSC and the NSCAA announced that they extended their agreement through FSC will televise at least eight men s and eight women s games each year. The W&M-ODU match up will be the 10th College Soccer Game of the Week telecast on Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. The College owns a (.545) all-time mark against ODU, but the Monarchs have won the last three affairs between the two schools. Sean Wheelock, a veteran of Major League Soccer broadcasts and other MLS programming, including the MLS Super- Draft, will serve as the primary announcer for each game. Santa Barbara, California-based Cultural Videos Communications is returning for a second season to coordinate the production of all the men s and women s NSCAA matches on Fox Soccer Channel. Cultural Videos Founder David Bolton, who also produces USL and MLS coverage on Fox Soccer Channel, will again serve as director/producer of the FSC college package. The 2006 version will feature 16 teams ranked in the 2006 NSCAA/adidas preseason rankings, including No. 1 Maryland, No. 2 Connecticut, No. 4 Virginia, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 5 Clemson, No. 10 UCLA, No. 12 Indiana, No. 13 Penn State, No. 14 Duke, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 17 St. John s, No. 18 South Florida, No. 21 UNC Greensboro, No. 22 UC Santa Barbara, No. 23 Old Dominion and No. 25 Washington. IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCES IN NET The preseason saw a hard fought battle in net between senior Kris Rake and junior Brennan Wergley. Both players demonstrated their worth and have split time in The sharing of time has not diminished the play of either one as both have been impressive through the early parts of the season. Rake finished the game versus No. 1 UNC on Aug. 25 with nine saves. The nine saves were the second-highest total in his career. He recorded a career-high 10 stops against then-no. 1 Maryland on Sept. 22, 2004 and Sept. 27, 2003 versus then-no. 5 St. John s. Rake notched his 12th career shutout with three stops against Stony Brook in the home-opener on Aug. 31. Wergley started against the then-no. 16 Wake Forest on Aug. 27 and recorded seven saves, including denying a penalty kick in the first half. Wergley saw his seven-game streak of six or more saves in a conest come to an end against then-no. 24 South Carolina. He recorded a quartet of four impressive saves to keep the deficit at 1-0 against the Gamecocks. NATIONAL POLLS NSCAA Poll (8/15) Soccer America Poll (9/4) Rank PR Record Rank Record PR 1. 5 AT VIRGINIA TECH/VS. VMI PAGE 5 DIFFICULT WAY TO START The opening of the 2006 season will not be an easy one for the Tribe as each of its first five opponents appeared in the NCAA Tournament a season ago. North Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, while Wake Forest made it to the Round of 16. Both Stony Brook and Virginia Tech made it to the second round of the tournament, while South Carolina made the field before falling in the opening round. It marks the first time in school history W&M will not only open the season, but play five-straight regular-season foes that advanced to the NCAA Tournament the previous season. RETURNING THE SCORING PUNCH The Tribe returns 72.4 percent (21-of-29) of its goals from a season ago. Included in the number are four of the top-five goal scorers and players with the top-three point totals on the team from a season ago. Senior Jarrett Thomas topped the squad in both goals (7) and points (16) a season ago, while sophomores Brock Jones and Andrew Hoxie finished tied for second on the team with five goals apiece. The pair rounded out the top-three point scorers for the Tribe with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Brendan McCurdy ranked fifth on the team a season ago with three goals. FRESHMAN TO WATCH College Soccer News named freshman Roger Bothe as one of its top 100 freshmen to keep an eye on in The College was one of 59 institutions to have at least one player named to the watch list and one of only three in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Bothe was one of four CAA players to be recognized by College Soccer News. Evan Newton of Old Dominion as well as Richard Edger and Sean Kelley of George Mason were also named to the list. Bothe was one of 24 defenders on the watch list.
