Hofstra is currently in the CAA, tying it for eighth (the top six make the tournament). Freshman forward Brett Carrington has scored in three of Hofstra s four wins this season, including the only goal in a 1-0 win over Old Dominion on Oct. 18. He had two-goal games in wins over Virginia Tech on Sept. 5 and Delaware on Oct. 11. Hofstra defeated #13 Virginia Tech 4-1 on Sept. 5 for its first win of the season, scoring four goals in a 10-minute span in the second half. The Pride concluded non-conference play by dropping a 1-0 decision to #2 SMU in its last game on Sept. 21, despite outshooting the Mustangs Hofstra is now in its last 18 games against nationally ranked teams, dating back to 2004, after defeating #13 Virginia Tech and losing to #2 SMU. The five losses have all been road games against teams in the top seven, including NCAA Tournament defeats to Maryland (2004) and Wake Forest (2006). Freshman forward Brett Carrington was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday, Oct. 20, the second time he has been honored this season. He was also the Co-Player of the Week on Sept. 8, after scoring two goals in the Pride s 4-1 win over #13 Virginia Tech. Five players on this season s roster earned international experience for their national teams in the last year. Richard Martinez and Steven Ehrichs both played for Puerto Rico in World Cup qualifying matches earlier this year, while Demont Mitchell played for Bahamas and Brett Carrington played for Barbados. Paul Alexander has also played for Barbados, while sophomore Erik Rengifo has also previously played for the United States Under-18 team. Hofstra has never lost a CAA Tournament game since joining the league in 2002 (compiling a record with a penalty kick victory over George Mason in the 2006 title game in the only tie). 2 Nuttall In 20th Season: The 2008 campaign marks the 20 th season for Head Coach Richard Nuttall, who began his Hofstra career in He took over a program that had only 11 wins in the three seasons prior to his arrival, and built it up to the level where it won three straight CAA championships from His career record coming into the week is Last Week s Results: Hofstra captured a big 1-0 road win over George Mason on Wednesday, as junior midfielder Rory McCrea (Sherburn-In-Elmet, England) scored the game-winner off his own rebound in the 85 th minute. The Pride, though, fell at home 1-0 to William & Mary on Saturday as a penalty kick early in the second half proved to be the difference. The Pride captured the George Mason win after withstanding a flurry of chances from the Patriots in the second half. Hofstra finally took some momentum back in the final 20 minutes, as senior midfielder Justin Flood (Hauppauge, NY) hit the crossbar with around 14 minutes to play, and sophomore forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden) couldn t finish on a great chance inside the six-yard boxin the 84 th minute. However, on the ensuing throw-in, McCrea got to a clearance off the head of a George Mason defender, had his first shot blocked, and ran onto the rebound from 15 yards and buried a shot inside the left post. Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT) had seven saves, five in the second half, to get his third shutout, while senior defender Richard Martinez (Highland, NY) saved a ball off the line in the second half. After William & Mary went ahead 1-0 in the driving rain on Saturday, the Pride had three good chances to tie. Freshman forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) had an open 15-yarder saved, McCrea hit the crossbar in the 79 th minute, and sophomore forward Demont Mitchell (Delray Beach, FL) hit the post in the 86 th minute. Cumpstone had four saves in the loss as Hofstra finished with an 11-8 edge in shot attempts. A Well-Capped Roster: Five of the players on the 2008 Hofstra Men s Soccer team have earned international caps for the senior national teams. Junior defender Richard Martinez (Highland, NY) and sophomore defender Steven Ehrichs (Brentwood, NY) were teammates on the Puerto Rico national team this past season during World Cup qualifying. Martinez played in five games, while Ehrichs played in two. Sophomore forward Demont Mitchell (Delray Beach, FL) earned two caps for Bahamas and scored a goal in a World Cup qualifying match. Freshman forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) also earned two caps for Barbados, while teammate Paul Alexander (Bridgetown, Barbados) appeared in an international friendly. In addition, three other Hofstra players have junior national team experience, including sophomore forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden), incoming freshman Gareth James (Wellington, New Zealand) and sophomore transfer Erik Rengifo (Woodhaven, NY), who played for the United States Under-18 team. In addition, juniors Rory McCrea (Sherburn-In-Elmut, England) and Rob Youhill (Harrogate, England) represented England in the 2007 World University Games. Mitchell and Ehrichs both got their 2008 collegiate seasons off to a strong start by scoring in Hofstra s opening day 2-2 tie with Stony Brook, while Carrington leads the team with six goals and 14 points on the year. Pride Has Successful Virginia Trip: Hofstra split its two games on its road trip to Virginia on Sept The Pride opened the weekend on Friday, Sept. 5 by picking up a huge 4-1 road win over #13 Virginia Tech, scoring four times in a 10-minute span in the second half. After a scoreless first half in which the Pride was outshot 11-1, Hofstra regrouped and came out flying in the second half. The Pride took four shots in the first seven minutes of the second stanza, before breaking the tie on a goal from sophomore forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden) at the 52:40 mark off a pass from freshman forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados). Senior midfielder Justin Flood (Hauppauge, NY) stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 59:03 mark, and Carrington followed by tallying back-toback goals less than a minute apart to push the lead to 4-0 at the 62:37 mark. Carrington s first goal came off a feed from junior midfielder Rob Youhill (Harrogate, England), while his second came off an assist from Grahn. Virginia Tech scored a harmless goal with 19:48 left to make the final score 4-1, as the Pride coasted home for the win. Sophomore goalkeeper James Winters (Austin, TX) had four saves on the day, all of which came in the first half to keep the game scoreless. Hofstra outshot the Hokies 11-5 in the second half after Virginia Tech had the 11-1 edge in that department in the opening stanza against Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 7, the Pride fell into an early 2-0 hole on two goals from freshman forward Tony Tchani in the first 8:19 of the contest. Hofstra hung in, though, as Carrington scored his third goal of the weekend at the 32:04 mark to cut the lead to 2-1, when his shot ricocheted in off a Virginia Tech defender. Virginia answered back before the half on a goal at the 37:57 mark, and then stretched the lead to 4-1 with 13:48 left in the contest. Sophomore forward Demont Mitchell (Delray Beach, FL) scored his second goal of the season with 9:21 left to make the final margin 4-2, when he converted off a feed from Flood. Winters had six saves in net for the Pride in a losing effort. Hofstra Concludes Toughest Non-Conference Schedule: Hofstra played the toughest non-conference schedule in its history, going in seven games. Three of the Pride s five non-conference games away from home were against teams that were ranked in the 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll, #10 Virginia Tech, #17 SMU and #23 Tulsa, while Virginia was also receiving votes. Virginia Tech, Tulsa and SMU were all ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the final NSCAA regular season poll from last fall, while Virginia was 25th. Hofstra started the stretch by thumping Virginia Tech, which was ranked 13 th in the nation at the time, by a 4-1 score on Sept. 5. The Pride, though, lost to Virginia (4-2) and Tulsa (3-0) before concluding with a tough 1-0 loss to #2 SMU on Sept. 21, despite outshooting the Mustangs 12-3 in the contest. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra is in its last 36 home games after falling to at home this season with a 1-0 loss to William & Mary on Saturday. Hofstra was at home last year, 8-1 in 2006, and in 2005 (as well as picking up a win in its 2004 home finale). All-time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium, which opened in 2003, the Pride has compiled a record. Hofstra had a 2-2 tie with Drexel on Oct. 14 in a home game played at Adelphi University, due to the Pride hosting a presidential debate on Wednesday.

3 Carrington Honored By CAA, Top Drawer: Freshman forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over defending CAA champion Old Dominion. Back on Sept. 8, Carrington was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week and was chosen to the 11-member Men s National Team of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer. Carrington had two goals and an assist in the Pride s 4-1 win over #13 Virginia Tech on Friday, Sept. 5, assisting on the first goal of the game in the 53 rd minute and then scoring back-to-back goals less than a minute apart in the 63 rd minute. He picked up his five points in a span of just 9:57 as the Pride turned a 0-0 halftime score into a commanding 4-0 advantage. Carrington then capped off his weekend by scoring a goal in a losing cause in the Pride s 4-2 defeat to Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 7. His goal came in the 34 th minute to cut the Virginia lead to 2-1 after the Cavaliers scored twice in the first 10 minutes, but Hofstra could come no closer. Carrington joined the Pride this season from St. George, Barbados, where he has already played on the national team at age 17. A Good Luck Charm: Freshman forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) has scored in three of the Pride s four wins this season. He had the only goal of the contest in a 1-0 win over Old Dominion on Oct. 18, while he had twogoal games in earlier wins against Virginia Tech (Sept. 5) and Delaware (Oct. 11). Carrington currently leads the Pride with six goals on the year. Pride Has CAA Three-Peat: The Hofstra Men s Soccer team earned its third straight conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2006, capturing the CAA title on penalty kicks over George Mason, before seeing the streak end last year when it just missed the CAA Tournament with a 6-5 record. In fact, Hofstra has actually never lost a CAA Tournament game, compiling a record in its seven games (the George Mason contest is officially a tie). The Pride did not qualify in its first two years in the league ( ), before capturing the title in 2004, when it when on a Cinderella run as the fifth seed in the six-team CAA Tournament to capture the title, defeating three nationally ranked teams in a span of five days (UNC Wilmington, VCU, Old Dominion). In 2005, Hofstra was the second seed and defeated seventh-ranked Old Dominion 1-0 in the championship game for the second year in a row in one of the most dramatic moments in Hofstra athletics history. The Pride scoring the gamewinning goal with only eight seconds left in regulation as Adrian Papaluca volleyed in a spectacular 25-yard shot on a clearance off a corner kick. Jerseys Retired: Hofstra retired two of its jersey numbers at halftime of Saturday s game against William & Mary. Gary Flood (#5) and Michael Todd (#9) had their jerseys retired after leading Hofstra to three straight CAA titles and NCAA Tournament berths from Todd was named the CAA Player of the Year in 2006, while Flood, who is in his second season with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer, earned first-team All-CAA honors that season as well. The current players wearing those numbers (#5 Kevin Mira, #9 Richard Martinez) will be able to wear those numbers until their careers end. Hofstra vs. Ranked Teams: Hofstra continued its remarkable stretch since 2004 against ranked teams with a 4-1 win over #13 Virginia Tech on Sept. 5. The Pride is now in its last 18 games against ranked opponents, dating back to The stretch started with a 2-1 win over James Madison (ranked 15 th ) in the 2004 regular season and continued with postseason wins over UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion and Seton Hall. In 2005, Hofstra was 3-1 against ranked teams, while in 2006, it compiled a mark. All five losses in this span have been to top seven teams (#7 Maryland, #3 Old Dominion, #3 Wake Forest, #4 Connecticut, #2 SMU), including two (Maryland in 2004, Wake Forest in 2006) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Against teams ranked between 10-25, Hofstra is during that span. Once he earned that starting spot, he has refused to give it up, as he has now started all 76 games in his career. Cumpstone Earns First Shutouts: Freshman goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT) earned his first collegiate shutout in an Oct. 11 win over Delaware, making one save, and added another one with two saves in a 1-0 win over Old Dominion on Oct. 18. He then had his best individual performance with seven saves in a 1-0 win over George Mason on Oct. 22. His only goal allowed in the last three games has come on a penalty kick. Anniversary Season: This year marks the 40 th anniversary of the Pride s first NCAA Tournament team, the 1968 squad coached by Bob VanderWarker. The 1968 team finished the year with a record, which still stands as the best record in school history in both wins and winning percentage. All-American forward Ed Gaffney set a school record with 19 goals which has never been broken, while Walt Beebe set a school record with 12 assists which remains on the Hofstra record books as well (although it was matched in 2001 by Patrick Geraghty). The 1968 team, which also still holds school records for goals scored and goals allowed, was honored as part of the program s annual Alumni Day on September 27 against Georgia State.
