The Bearcats are returning nine of its 11 starters from last season s final game. Senior forward Jake Keegan, who led Binghamton with seven goals, five assists and 19 points in 2011, continued to show his scoring ability with three goals through the first four games. Senior back Trey Jasenski was a second-team all-conference back last year and sophomore midfielder Tucker Sandercock was named to the America East All-Rookie Team. All four starting backs return for Binghamton this year. Versus Albany: Hofstra is 1-1 in the all-time series against Albany, including a 3-2 overtime victory against the Great Danes at home in Albany is looking to build on its America East Conference Semifinal appearance, as the team brings back eight of the 11 starters from last season. Of the eight starters, goal scorers Quintel Gates and Brandon Wilson return having scored 10 of 24 total goals last season. Freshman midfielder Anthony Rozzano has made an instant-impact with the Great Danes. Through three games, he has two goals and an assist. Defensively, Albany has allowed 55 shots but has limited ongoal chances in holding opponents to a 0.73 shooting percentage. Preseason Poll: Hofstra was picked eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association's preseason poll released on Aug. 7. Old Dominion was selected as the favorite, according to a vote of the league's men's soccer coaches. Teams received 10 points for a first-place vote, nine for second, etc. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. ODU returns 10 starters from last year's squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs led the 11-team league with 99 points. The first was a 1-0 victory in 2005 when JMU was #22. The Pride then recorded a 1-0 win in 2006 when the Dukes were #23. In the 2011 season finale, Hofstra blanked #12 JMU, 3-0, to end the campaign with momentum. His four goals were just one behind Shaun Foster for the most on the team. He even netted the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at Drexel and added a teambest 10 assists. That total marked the highest in the Colonial Athletic Association, where Griebsch was the only player to crack double digits for assists. Griebsch showed the form that led to his breakout season last year, scoring a penalty-kick goal and adding an assist in Hofstra s seasonopening 2-0 victory over Lehigh on Aug. 25 for a three-point effort. He followed that effort with the game-tying goal in a 1-1 draw against Monmouth. His five points (two goals and an assist) trails only Maid Memic for the team-lead in points with six. Foster Recognized: Junior defender Shaun Foster was named to the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy watch list for The trophy is presented to the top player in Division I at the conclusion of the season.

Foster was one of just 42 men's players to be named to the list. The MAC Herman Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer and is presented annually during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America, which is the largest soccer coaches' organization in the world, will narrow the list to 15 semifinalists by Nov. 29. Member coaches and fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced December 6. The winners will be announced at the awards' banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, Jan. 11. Foster was one of just 11 defenders to make the watch list. The Southport, England native was one of just four players from Colonial Athletic Association-member schools to earn the distinction, joining Old Dominion goalkeeper Victor Francoz and forward Yannick Smith and James Madison midfielder Paul Wyatt. Foster has won back-to-back CAA's Defensive Player of the Year awards and was a first-team All-CAA pick as a sophomore in The 6-foot-2 back liner is just the third player in CAA history to receive Defensive Player of the Year honors two times and just the second to win it in back-to-back years. Foster Does It All: Last season, Foster started 15 games but also showed great offensive ability by notching a team-high five goals and an assist. He needed just 12 shots on goal to register those five goals, finishing with a team-best.417 shooting percentage. All Clear On The Holland: Freshman Joseph Holland needed just two games to register the first multi-point effort of his career. Holland notched his first career point when he assisted on Maid Memic s opening goal against St. Francis just 4:30 into the contest. He followed that effort up with a goal in the 43rd minute for the three-point night. Preseason Praise: Shaun Foster was named to the 2012 All-CAA preseason team on Aug. 21. Old Dominion senior forward Yannick Smith and James Madison senior midfielder Paul Wyatt, who both earned All-America honors a year ago, have been chosen as the CAA s preseason men s soccer Players of the Year for 2012 in voting by the league s head coaches. Foster Earns Dual Honors: Foster was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year in a vote of the league s coaches in As a freshman in 2010, he made CAA history when he was named the Rookie of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. He became the first player in league history to earn two of the conference s major awards in the same year. He also became the second different Hofstra player to win the Defensive Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons, as Richard Martinez ( 10) earned it in his senior campaign in Defensive Dependability: Juniors Shaun Foster, Tyler Botte and senior Thomas Bekas have anchored the Pride s defensive line this season. All three defenders have played every second in Hofstra s start and have been a key reason why the Pride has not allowed a goal yet in Against Lehigh in the opener, Hofstra held the Mountain Hawks to just one shot on goal. Close Calls: Hofstra lost six games by one goal in Nuttall In 24th Season: The 2012 campaign marks the 24th season for head coach Richard Nuttall, who began his Hofstra career in He took over a program that had only 11 wins in the three seasons prior to his arrival, and built it up to the level where it won three straight CAA championships from His career record is now Botte Break Out: Junior defender Tyler Botte became a full-time starter in 2011, appearing in 17 games with 15 starts. As a two-way threat; Botte scored four goals on just 12 shots and ended the season with a two-game scoring streak by logging goals against Penn State and James Madison. Botte scored the tying goal in a 1-1 draw against Penn State. Botte redirected Chris Griebsch s free kick at the 82:00 mark while also registering a key goal in a 3-1 win over nationally ranked JMU in the season finale. In the classroom, Botte was a CAA Commissioner s Academic Award recipient. Barea On The Big Stage: Senior Stephan Barea had missed the Pride s matches at Towson and versus VCU last year while training with the Puerto Rican national team for their World Cup qualifier match against Canada in Toronto on October 11. Barea played 10 minutes in the scoreless draw that eliminated Puerto Rico from qualifying for the World Cup. Barea, a Levittown native, started in all 15 games in which he played. His lone goal was the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Colgate. Barea headed a corner kick in the 52nd minute. Overall, he registered 17 shots. As a sophomore, Barea didn t score. But played in different roles and gave the Hofstra coaches a chance to utilize his versatility by playing multiple positions including outside back, outside midfield, center midfield, and a wing forward. He played left midfield in the 2-0 victory over St. Francis on Aug. 30. Opening Day: Hofstra won on Opening Day for the first time in three seasons when the Pride defeated Lehigh. Before the 2-0 victory over the Mountain Hawks, Hofstra s last win in the first game came in 2009 at Stony Brook when Stephan Barea scored 62 seconds into his first collegiate game. Before 2010, Hofstra was in its previous five season openers. Off To A Good Start: Though the CAA opener isn t until next month, Hofstra will be hoping to start league play in the same fashion as With its win over UNCW last year, Hofstra is in conference openers since joining the CAA in The Pride s previous win came in 2009 at Georgia State (2-0). Point For Pellegrini: Goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini notched the first assist for a Hofstra keeper since the 2005 season when he was credited with one on Hofstra s second goal against Fordham. Pellegrini punted the ball to midfield, starting the scoring play between Maid Memic and Brett Carrington, who picked up the goal. Matthias Gumbrecht had the last goalkeeper assist for the Pride on September 1, 2005 at Stony Brook. Dependability: Pellegrini was the only Hofstra keeper to see game action last season. He logged every second of game time in net for the Pride, making 92 saves while posting a 1.70 goals-against average in 1698:55. Pellegrini led the CAA in total saves, recording six more than the next closest finisher in ODU s Victor Francoz. Pellegrini also posted four shutouts while leading the CAA with 5.11 saves-per-game. He was the only keeper to register more than five saves a contest. The second-most in the CAA also belonged to Francoz. In 2010, Pellegrini started eight games in goal compared to 11 starts for incumbent starter Greg Cumpstone. Despite not playing in either exhibition this summer, Pellegrini made the Opening Day start and stopped the only shot-on-goal he faced. Just five days later, he picked up his 10 th career shutout by making five saves in Hofstra s 2-0 victory over St. Francis. Pellegrini saw

more action in the second game, making five saves. The netminder was called on to make three saves in the second half and ensured St. Francis did not score on any of its six corner-kick opportunities. Before allowing a third-minute goal to Monmouth, Pellegrini extended his personal shutout streak to 33:39 dating to last season s 1-1 tie against Penn State. He is in his last five games. International Buffet: The Pride has nine Long Island players on the roster this season, but also has an eclectic mix of foreign flavor, with four Germans (Chris Griebsch, Florian Popp, Felix Schaefer and Herbert Biste),one Icelandic native (Heidar Emilsson), two Norwegians (Marius Flateboe and Ellev Sandtroen), two Englishmen (Shaun Foster and Joseph Holland), an Italian with Czech citizenship (Roberto Pellegrini), a Bosnian who attended secondary school in Norway (Maid Memic). Janowski Makes Debut As Field Player: Reserve goalkeeper Adam Janowski made his debut as a field player in last season s draw against Penn State, coming on in the first overtime. Janowski played both preseason scrimmages in goal for the Pride and made several diving saves, including a lunging stop to his right in the first 30 minute-period against Lafayette. Home, Sweet Home: With a win in the home opener against St. Francis, Hofstra is now in its last 62 home games. All-time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium, which opened in 2003, the Pride has compiled a record. On the Road: Over the last three seasons, including neutral site games, Hofstra is away from Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Scoring Outburst: Hofstra s three-goal outburst in its win over Albany was the most goals for the Pride since scoring four goals in a 4-1 win over Drexel on October 14, The Pride followed the effort with two more three-goal games in 2011, including a 3-0 victory over No. 12 JMU in the regular season finale on Nov. 5. Hofstra also scored three goals against Towson on Oct. 5. Seniority: Hofstra had just two seniors on last year s roster with goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone and forward Brett Carrington. But Hofstra has more than doubled their senior class this season, giving the Pride a more veteran look. Goalkeeper Adam Janowski is entering his fifth year with the program thanks to a red-shirt he took as a freshman. A.J. Laza, Thomas Bekas, Mike Annarumma and Stephen Barea are also returning for their senior campaigns. A Well-Capped Roster: The Pride has a pair of players on the roster who have played for their national teams. Seniors Stephan Barea and A.J. Laza have both been called up for national team duty for Puerto Rico (and have also played for its Under 21 team). In addition, sophomore goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini has played for the Czech Republic U-20 team. Return To Health: A.J. Laza saw his season limited to 11 appearances due to injury last season. Laza is working his way back into the lineup in 2012 will look to bolster the defense. Laza contributed to two shutout victories over Colgate and nationally ranked JMU. Emilsson s Big Day: Sophomore midfielder Heidar Emilsson could be asked to do more this year. He scored two goals last year, picking up the first goal of his career on his third start of the season at Delaware and picked up his first collegiate goal and assist in the contest. He assisted on Shaun Foster s goal and later scored off a shot from 30-yards out. Hofstra Media Releases: The Hofstra University men s soccer media releases will be available on the Hofstra Athletics Web site at CAA Weekly Release: The Colonial Athletic Association s weekly field hockey release will be available on Wednesday afternoons on the CAA website at HOFSTRA GAME SUMMARIES GAME 1 Saturday, August 25 at Lehigh: Sophomore Maid Memic scored in the 40th minute and junior Chris Griebsch added an assist and then a penalty-kick goal in the second half to lead the Hofstra men's soccer team to a season-opening 2-0 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Ulrich Sports Complex. Hofstra won on Opening Day for the first time since Junior goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini stopped the only shot-on-net faced to tally his ninth career shutout. The Pride handed the Mountain Hawks (0-1) their first home defeat since Nov. 6, 2010, snapping an eightgame unbeaten streak. Memic needed less than a half to match his freshman goal output of Griebsch sent a cross to Memic on the right side, setting up his goal from 20 yards out to give Hofstra the lead 39:38 into the contest. That marked Memic's second career goal after he scored one in 15 games last year. Griebsch provided a key insurance goal early in the second half. Hofstra was able to push the ball past Lehigh's backline, resulting in a foul called on the Mountain Hawks inside the box. Griebsch converted the subsequent penalty kick for a 2-0 Hofstra edge.

Griebsch's assist on Memic's goal continued a trend from The midfielder/forward led the Colonial Athletic Association in assists with 10 and was a third-team All-CAA selection last year. Griebsch scored on Hofstra's lone penalty kick attempt in the previous campaign and has already matched that in 2012 when his one-on-one shot beat Lehigh keeper Ciaran Nugent at 60:43. The Pride's stingy defense prevented little from getting through to Pellegrini. Thanks to a defense led by junior Shaun Foster (Southport, England), junior Tyler Botte (North Babylon, N.Y.) and senior Thomas Bekas (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Hofstra did not allow a single shot on goal in the opening half and just three wide shots total through the first 45 minutes. The defensive trio all played 90 minutes. Hofstra also maintained offensive pressure, putting eight shots on target (Nugent finished with six saves). Senior Mike Annarumma (Massapequa, N.Y.) tested Nugent the most, finishing with a team-high three shots. Hofstra head coach Richard Nuttall used a short bench in the first game of his 24th season at the helm. Only three reserves saw action off the bench, though sophomore Ellev Sandtroen logged 24 minutes in Hofstra debut. Sophomore Heidar Emilsson played 26 minutes and senior defender A.J. Laza also saw playing time. GAME 2 Thursday, August 30 vs. St. Francis (N.Y.): Maid Memic scored his second goal in as many games, Joseph Holland netted his first career goal and Roberto Pellegrini posted his second consecutive shutout of the season to lift Hofstra to a 2-0 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.). Hofstra (2-0) scored both goals in the opening half with Memic and Holland each assisting on each other's goal at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Pellegrini also made five saves against a St. Francis squad (0-2) that entered after having lost a close 1-0 contest to No. 4 UConn last week. Memic opened the scoring just 4:30 into the match. The sophomore forward found the net after taking Holland's crisp pass and firing a head-on shot that beat Terriers goalkeeper Tyler Clarhaut on the low right-side for the early 1-0 lead. Memic also scored in Hofstra's season-opening win over Lehigh last week. Holland finished with a team-high three shots and scored a key insurance goal in the 43rd minute. Memic made a deft touch pass to Holland just outside the box and the freshman capitalized with a strong goal from almost 12 yards out to hand Hofstra a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Senior midfielder Stephan Barea also played a strong game at left midfield while freshman midfielder Felix Schaefer also looked comfortable on the pitch. GAME 3 Sunday, September 2 vs. Monmouth: Hofstra erased a one-goal deficit and tallied 21 total shots, playing Monmouth to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference matchup on Sunday night in front of an announced crowd of 705 at The Great Lawn. Junior midfielder Chris Griebsch netted his second goal of the season, scoring to the far post in the 29th minute to knot the score at one. Griebsch, who also scored in Hofstra's season opener, helped Hofstra improve to on the season. Monmouth entered the contest receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll and moved to The Hawks raced to the early lead with a third-minute goal. Jacob Rubinstein headed in a shot just 2:33 into the contest for his second goal of the campaign. Ryan Clark and Edney Derrick assited on the score, marking the first time in four games Hofstra gave up a goal. Junior goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini finished with two saves and is now in the last five games dating to last season. Pellegrini (Monte Porzio Catone, Italy) entered the contest with three consecutive shutouts. Monmouth's goal ended his personal shutout streak at 333:39 (Pellegrini last gave up a goal against Penn State on Nov. 1, 2011). Griebsch netted the equalizer when he scored to the far post off a cross. Senior midfielder Mike Annarumma(Massapequa Park, N.Y.) recorded the assist for his first point of the season at 28:56. Sophomore Maid Memic also was credited with an assist on the play. Hofstra had multiple chances to win in the second overtime. Griebsch's shot hit the crossbar before Hofstra drew a foul in the box on the ensuing action. But Monmouth goalkeeper Alex Blackburn stopped Griebsch's penalty kick attempt with 3:19 left in the session to preserve the tie. Griebsch had previously converted Hofstra's only penalty kick attempt of 2011 and scored off a PK on Opening Day against Lehigh. Blackburn made seven saves total. Griebsch was active all game, posting a game-high eight shots. The Dessau-Rosslau, Germany native is now tied with Memic for the team lead in goals with two and just one point behind Memic's six points. Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) finished with four shots. In all, Hofstra racked up a advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge after halftime. The Pride made the lead stand up thanks to Pellegrini making three of his saves after the break. Hofstra also used a strong defensive effort to shut out an opponent for the second straight time in 2012 and the third straight time overall including last year's season-ending 3-0 victory over then No.12 James Madison at home. Juniors Shaun Foster and Tyler Botte teamed with seniors Thomas Bekas and A.J. Laza to provide stellar support on the back line. The defense, which allowed just one shot on goal against Lehigh, ensured St. Francis could not convert on its six corner kicks. Holland picked up his first career multi-point game in just his second career contest and Memic also tallied his first career multi-point effort as well. Pellegrini earned his 10th career shutout.

HOFSTRA HEAD COACH RICHARD NUTTALL Richard Nuttall, a former professional soccer player in England and a former member of the Long Island Rough Riders, is entering his 24th season as Hofstra University Head Soccer Coach in Nuttall has guided the Pride to a record in his 23 seasons, as he has transformed the program into one of the most competitive in the Northeast. Nuttall, who is the winngest coach in program history, led his team to a 2011 season-ending 3-0 victory over No. 12 James Madison as part of a finish. Nuttall picked up his 200th career win in dramatic fashion, as Hofstra defeated VCU 2-1 inn the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association semifinals on a penalty kick with five seconds left in regulation. That victory enabled Hofstra to reach the CAAA title game for the fourth time in the last seven years under Nuttall's guidance, as the Pride ralliedd with a young team late in the year to qualify for the CAA Tournament before finishing overall and inn league play. Prior to his arrival in Hempstead, the soccer program had posted five losingg seasons in ninee years, including a season in Nuttall's teams have finished.500 or better 12 times in the last 16 seasons, including a streak of seven straight at one point a remarkable feat considering that Hofstra has been in three conferences (East Coast, America East, CAA) during that time, each more competitive than the last. In addition, Hofstra Soccer players have flourished under Nuttall s guidance, as several are either playing professionally or are members of their respective National teams. Hofstra finished with an record and a mark in conference games in 2009, but fell short of a CAA Tournament bid after tying No. 21 UNC Wilmington 0-0 in the regular season finale. The Pride featured four All-CAA performers in 2009, including Defensive Player of the Year Richard Martinez, who is also a member of the Puerto Rico national team. The Pride reached the CAAA Tournament in 2008 after a one-year hiatus with a respectable record in league play. The 2007 season was a bit of a rebuilding year, thoughh Nuttall kept his squad in contention for a CAAA playoff berth until late in the year and finished with a 6-5 mark in league play. The Pride was especially toughh at home, compiling a record at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. In 2006, Nuttall led Hofstra to its third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship and NCAAA Division I Tournament berth, making Hofstra one of only three schools in the nation with three straight conference titles from (joining Western Illinois and New Mexico). The Pride finished the campaign with a record, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 home win over Providence in front of 1,450 fans at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Pride finished the 2005 season with a record, tying for the most wins in school history at the Division I level, while also earning its highest ranking in school history at #13 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. Hofstra earned its CAAA championship with a 1-0 win over #7 Old Dominion in the championship game, the highest ranked team that the Pride has ever defeated. Nuttall was one of eight coaches to earn Regional Coach of the Year honors from the NSCAA. During the 2004 campaign, Nuttall guided the Pride to one of their most memorable seasons in school history. After an up-and- postseason run, outscoring their three opponents (all of which were nationally ranked) by a combined 4-0. Hofstra then went on to receive its down regular season, Hofstra rallied to win the Colonial Athletic Association championshipp with a dramatic first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth and defeatedd nationally-ranked Seton Hall 2-1 in the opening round, before finally seeing its run finally end with a loss at third-seeded Maryland. That loss snapped a six-game win streak, with five of those six wins coming against teams that were nationally ranked. In 2001, Hofstra's last season in the America East Conference, Nuttall led his team to a record and a berth in the America East Tournament for the fourth time in five years. Nuttall, a native of South Yorkshire, England, played with Leeds United and Stoke City of the English Football League. He graduated from the Carnegie School (College) of Physical Education in West Yorkshire in It was during this time that Nuttall received his Football Association coaching certificates. Nuttall, who moved to Long Island permanently in 1988 after spending summers in the United States since 1983, taught physical education at North Shore High School. He is also a partner in the highly successful Pro Excel summer soccer camp on Long Island and is active in working with many Long Island communities. Nuttall and his wife, Christine, reside in New Hyde Park, New York, with their three children, Jack, Caroline, and Grace.
