1 SPORTS NEWS HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS PHYSICAL FITNESS CENTER (516) FAX: (516) HOFSTRA WOMEN S SOCCER WEEKLY NOTES (8-1, 2-0 CAA) Oct. 5-7 (vs. William & Mary, vs. Old Dominion) Streaks, Stats, and Storylines: Hofstra takes an 8-1 record into this weekend s home games against William & Mary and Old Dominion. The 8-1 record ties the program s best-ever mark through nine games (matching the 1994 and 2003 teams). Senior forward Brooke DeRosa leads Hofstra in scoring with six goals and five assists. She played at Syracuse from , and took a two-year absence from college soccer before returning this fall at Hofstra. She had two goals and two assists in her Hofstra debut against Cornell on Aug. 31. Hofstra has had 13 different goal scorers through the first nine games this season, tying the school record set in Senior defender Sue Weber was chosen as one of 20 finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award on Sept. 24. Weber named a third-team All-American by the NSCAA in 2005, becoming the first All-American in the program s history. She also has won the CAA Defensive Player of the Year award the last two seasons and was the Preseason CAA Co-Player of the Year. Senior defender Sue Weber has never missed a minute of playing time in her collegiate career (67 games), playing wire-to-wire in all 49 games at Hofstra and in 18 games as a freshman at Georgia. Hofstra is ranked fourth in the Northeast Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine and the NSCAA. The Pride is all-time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium since it opened in The Pride is also overall at home since Hofstra has won the last 120 games in which it has led in the last 10 minutes, a span of more than 10 years (since a 2-2 tie with Manhattan on Sept. 11, 1997). The Pride is also when leading in the last 20 minutes since the 1995 season opener (a 4-3 overtime loss to Saint Peter s). Junior midfielder Edel Malone helped Ireland to the semifinals of the World University Games in August. Malone was the 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year, but missed last season with a knee injury. She scored in the fourth minute of her first game back against Cornell, and is currently second on the team with three goals. Friday opponent William & Mary is 7-3 with a win over defending national champion North Carolina this season. Hofstra s Probable Starters Stats Pos. No. Name Cl. 2 Hofstra Matches Best Nine-Game Record: Hofstra improved to 8-1 on the season with a pair of CAA wins on the road last weekend, defeating Towson 1-0 and George Mason 2-1 in overtime. The 8-1 record ties the program s best-ever mark through nine games, matching the standard set in 1994 and Hofstra also had a 6-1 record in nonconference games this season, which marks the best nonconference record since the program first started league play in the America East in The 2002 and 2003 teams had the previous standard with a non-conference record. What Rust?: Senior forward Brooke DeRosa (Ronkonkoma, NY) has gotten off to a quick start for the Pride this season, tallying six goals and five assists in the first nine games. DeRosa has played especially well given her nearly three-year absence from the college game. She played at Syracuse from , before being injured prior to the 2005 season and then leaving school for personal reasons. She returned to join the Pride this year, and had two goals and two assists in her first game against Cornell, picking up two goals and an assist in the game s first 21 minutes. She also scored twice in the Pride s 3-0 win over Wyoming on Sept. 9 at the James Madison Invitational, and had the game-winner 49 seconds into overtime in the Pride s 2-1 win over George Mason on Sunday. DeRosa Honored: Senior forward Brooke DeRosa (Ronkonkoma, NY) earned the first CAA Player of the Week honor on Sept. 4 after tallying two goals and three assists in the Pride s first two games. She also earned a spot on the Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week, while earning the Goal of the Week honor from Big Apple Soccer. She had two goals and two assists in her Hofstra debut against Cornell on Aug. 31 and then assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime of the Pride s 2-1 win over Central Connecticut on Sept. 2. Malone Returns: Senior forward Brooke DeRosa (see above) wasn t the only Hofstra player to have an impact on opening day after a long absence from college soccer. Junior midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland) was named the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year but injured her knee last summer and missed the entire 2006 campaign. She returned to the starting line-up against Cornell and scored a goal just 3:17 into the contest. She is now second on the Pride with three goals and two assists. Malone had seen plenty of game action recently, though, as she helped Ireland to the semifinals of the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand in August (see below). Malone Helps Ireland To Semifinals: Junior midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland) helped the Ireland Women s Soccer team reach the semifinals of the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand from August Malone started every game for Ireland, and played all 90 minutes in each of their final five contests. After opening with a loss to North Korea, Ireland won three straight contests to reach the semifinals, defeating European rivals Germany and France along the way, along with the host team from Thailand. Ireland s run, though, ended with a loss to Russia on penalty kicks in the semifinals, although Malone did convert her penalty kick in the second round. Iron Woman: Remarkably, junior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY) has never missed a single minute of playing time in her entire collegiate career a span of 67 contests. Weber has played every minute of all 49 games in her twoplus seasons with the Pride, after playing wire-to-wire in all 18 games as a freshman at Georgia. Weber Named CAA Preseason Co-POY: Senior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Co-Player of the Year in a vote of the league s coaches in August, sharing the honor with William & Mary forward Claire Zimmeck. Weber became the first All-American in the history of the Hofstra Women s Soccer program in 2005 when she was a third team All-America selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Weber was one of only nine defenders in the nation to earn All- American honors. She has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons, and was also the CAA Women s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Weber opened the 2007 season with two assists in the Pride s win over Cornell, setting up the eventual game-winning goal with a 50-yard run up the center of the field. Weber One Of 20 Candidates For Lowe s Award: Senior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY) was named one of 20 candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award on Monday, Sept. 24. The Lowe s Senior CLASS Award is presented annually in eight NCAA Division I sports to a senior student athlete who excels both on and off the field. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched during the season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving college early to turn professional. The award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg and honors the attributes of senior student athletes in four areas: classroom, community, character and competition. Weber carries a 3.89 GPA as a physical education major. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra improved to 3-1 at home this year with a 2-0 win over Fordham on Sept. 22. The Pride is now at Hofstra Soccer Stadium since the facility first opened in 2003, including since the start of the 2005 campaign. Hofstra is also an impressive at home since the start of the 1999 season at the old University Field (see chart below). Hofstra has won both regular season home games with William & Mary (1-0 in 2003 and 3-0 in 2005), but William & Mary did defeat the Pride 1-0 in the 2003 CAA semifinals. Hofstra Home Records (since 1999) Year Record Facility 1999: 8-1 (University Field) 2000: 8-1 (University Field) 2001: (University Field) 2002: 9-1 (University Field) 2003: (Hofstra Soccer Stadium) 2004: 6-2 (Hofstra Soccer Stadium) 2005: (Hofstra Soccer Stadium) 2006: (Hofstra Soccer Stadium) 2007: 3-1 (Hofstra Soccer Stadium) Total:
3 Success In Conference: Since joining the CAA in 2002, Hofstra has compiled an impressive record in league games. Dating back to the America East, Hofstra finished third or higher eight straight seasons, a streak that ended with a seventh-place finish in last year s injuryplagued campaign. Hofstra s Colonial Athletic Association Records Year Record Place 2002: 6-3 Third Place 2003: First Place 2004: 6-3 First Place (Tie) 2005: Second Place 2006: Seventh Place 2007: 2-0 First Place (Tie) Total Closing Time: Recent history shows that if you trail the Hofstra Women's Soccer team late in the game, you are facing a significant uphill battle. Hofstra has won 120 consecutive games when leading in the last 10 minutes, a streak of more than 10 years dating back to a 2-2 tie with Manhattan on Sept. 11, 1997, when the Jaspers scored the equalizer in the 83 rd minute. Hofstra is also undefeated in its last 137 games ( ) when leading in the last 20 minutes, since falling 4-3 to Saint Peter s in its 1995 season opener (when the Peahens tied the score in the 84 th minute and then won the game in overtime). Hofstra s only ties in the last 12 seasons when leading in the final 20 minutes include a 1-1 draw with Northeastern in the regular season finale last year, when the Huskies tied the score on a penalty kick in the 78 th minute. Hofstra s streak has been tested often, as 56 of the 120 straight wins when leading in the last 10 minutes have been by one goal. The Pride has shown how impressive that streak is by winning twice this season when it trailed with 10 minutes to play. Hofstra defeated Central Connecticut on Sept. 2 when it tied the game in the 81 st minute and won in overtime. The Pride then did the exact same thing on Sunday at George Mason, knotting the score at 1-1 on a goal from senior forward Larkin Hargraves (Deep River, CT) in the 81 st minute and then winning the game in the first minute of overtime on a goal from senior forward Brooke DeRosa (Ronkonkoma, NY). Spreading The Wealth: Hofstra has already had 13 different players score goals this season, after senior forward Larkin Hargraves (Deep River, CT) scored her first of the season (and fifth in her career) in the Pride s 2-1 win over George Mason on Sunday. The 13 goal scorers ties a school record for a season, matching the standard set by the 2003 team. In addition, senior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY) has three assists, and sophomore forward Erika Fuertes (Glen Head, NY) has two, giving the Pride 15 players with at least two points this year. Hofstra Wins JMU Invitational: Hofstra captured first place at the JMU Invitational with wins over Richmond (2-1) and Wyoming (3-0) on Sept Hofstra and James Madison both finished 2-0, with the Pride earning a narrow edge in goal differential. Four Hofstra players were named to the All-Tournament team: senior forward Brooke DeRosa (Ronkonkoma, NY), junior midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland), senior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY) and junior defender Sara Gulley (Burke, VA). Pride Ranked In Region: Hofstra was picked fourth in the Northeast Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine in its latest poll released on Monday, one spot behind its season-high of third. Boston College is first in the region, followed by Connecticut and St. John s. Hofstra is also ranked fourth in the region by the NSCAA. Hofstra Picked Fifth In Preseason CAA Poll: Hofstra was picked to finish in fifth place in the preseason Colonial Athletic Association poll in a vote of the league s coaches. Defending regular season champion William & Mary was picked first, while UNC Wilmington, defending tournament champion Old Dominion and James Madison held down the 2-4 positions. Making Them Count: Junior defender Kariena Richards (Midleton, Ireland) has scored four goals in her Hofstra career, but has had a knack for coming up with big ones. Her goal with 9:12 left in regulation on Sept. 2 tied the score against Central Connecticut at 1-1, allowing the Pride to force the extra session where it would come up with the 2-1 victory. Last year, she broke a 1-1 tie against Central Connecticut with a goal in the 84 th minute, and also broke a 1-1 tie against Fordham with a goal in the 82 nd minute. Her fourth goal came in the regular season finale against Northeastern, giving Hofstra a 1-0 lead in the second half in a game it needed to win to secure a CAA Tournament berth. Northeastern, though, came back to earn the 1-1 tie. Irish Connection Continues: Hofstra has clearly had a successful history of recruiting in Ireland, with recent graduates Elaine O Connor ( 03), Dolores Deasley ( 03) and Emma Kilduff ( 04) all having an impact on the program s success. This year s team features three Irish players in juniors Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland) and Kariena Richards (Midleton, Ireland), and sophomore Diane Caldwell (Balbriggan, Ireland). Caldwell qualified for the Irish senior national team at age 17, and Richards has previously served as captain of the Irish Under-19 squad. Turning The Corners: One area that Hofstra has been statistically dominant this season is corner kicks. Hofstra has taken 52 corners through the first nine games (5.8 per contest), while its opponents have taken only 14 (1.6 per contest). The first half is especially pronounced, as the Pride has a 30-5 edge in corners in first halves this season. Weber, Robens Honored By WPSL: Senior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY) and junior goalkeeper Krystal Robens (East Taunton, MA) were honoered by the Women s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) this past summer. Weber was named a first-team All-WPSL defender for the Long Island Fury, while Robens was a third-team ALL-WPSL goalkeeper for the Massachusetts Stingers. Weber led the Fury to a record, one year after helping the Fury to the national championship with an mark in Robens helped the Stingers to a 6-4 mark. Tough Tests This Weekend: Hofstra will put its 8-1 record to the test with a pair of tough home games this weekend. Defending regular season champion William & Mary visits Hofstra on Friday with a 7-3 record, including a 1-0 win over defending national champion North Carolina. Defending CAA Tournament champion Old Dominion, meanwhile, visits on Sunday with a record on the year.
