The Pride s last six games have all been away from home, as it faced six regionally ranked teams (three of which were nationally ranked). Hofstra junior forward Michael Todd is coming off a onegoal, one-assist effort in the Pride s 3-2 win at UNC Wilmington on Sunday. Todd leads Hofstra in scoring with 12 points (four goals, four assists). Sophomore defender Gary Flood (injury) missed the first game of his career at UNC Wilmington. Constantinos Christoudias (Nicosia, Cyprus) staked the Pride to a 1-0 lead at 21:57 when the sophomore midfielder turned and launched a 15-yard strike into the right side of the net past UNCW goalkeeper Brad Knighton. Todd was credited with an assist on the goal and Hofstra took a 1-0 edge into intermission. The Seahawks scored the equalizer at 55:45 after Chris Murray was taken down in the box and Juho Karjalainen nailed down the penalty kick. Hofstra regained the lead just 36 seconds later, however, when the Pride collected a score on an own goal that eluded Knighton for a 2-1 advantage. The Pride then pushed the margin to 3-1 on Todd's goal, a 20-yard blast near the top of the penalty area, at the 79- minute mark, which came off an assist from senior midfielder Michael Hermann (Erlangen, Germany). UNCW cut the deficit to 3-2 at 82:67 on a header by junior striker Keith Shevlin and had several opportunities down the stretch, but the Hofstra defense proved up to the test.

2 Pride Celebrates 50 th Season: The Hofstra Men's Soccer team is celebrating its 50 th anniversary this season. Hofstra began its program in 1954, tallying a record in its debut campaign. Head Coach Paul Lynner and several members of the 1954 team were honored at halftime of the Pride s Alumni Day game against Stony brook on Sept. 19. CAA Update: The Pride faces an important home weekend for its CAA Tournament hopes. Hofstra had a very difficult early-season schedule, opening with four straight road games, including two nationally-ranked teams (William & Mary, VCU) and preseason favorite Old Dominion. The Pride is currently in eighth place in the CAA at 1-2-1, but is only three points behind sixth-place Towson, which has played one extra game (2-2-1). The top six teams qualify for the CAA Tournament, so the Pride will need to make a surge over its upcoming fourgame homestand (Delaware, Towson, George Mason, James Madison). James Madison (4-0) is the only undefeated team in conference play, while VCU (5-1) is also in the hunt for first place. Hofstra s Newest Iron Man: Sophomore defender Gary Flood (Hauppauge, NY) played every minute in his first 25 collegiate games, before finally checking out against Coastal Carolina on Oct. 1 with just under 10 minutes to play. He started all 18 games as a freshman last year, and played every minute of every contest. He then went wire-to-wire in the first seven games of 2004, extending his streak to 25 games without a substitution. Former Hofstra midfielder Arni Gunnarsson went the entire 2002 season without a substitution, and had a streak of 26 straight complete games played, the longest such streak in Head Coach Richard Nuttall s 16 seasons. Flood has been named to a pair of All-Tournament teams this season, earning the honor at the Long Island University Classic on Sept , and then duplicating the feat at the Clemson Invitational on Oct He suffered an injury in the Pride s 1-0 overtime loss to Virginia Commonwealth on Friday and missed the first game of his career at UNC Wilmington on Sunday. Gary Flood s Streak -- By The Numbers: Consecutive Complete Games Played Without A Substitution: 25 Consecutive Minutes Played Without A Substitution: Consecutive Hours Played Without A Substitution: 39.8 Consecutive Days Elapsed Without A Substitution: 402 Hofstra Substitutions During The Streak: 246 Goals Scored During The Streak: 66 (28 by Hofstra) Shots Taken During The Streak: 704 (379 by Hofstra) Goalkeeper Saves During The Streak: 252 (115 by Hofstra) Corner Kicks During The Streak: 217 (115 by Hofstra) Hofstra Wins Clemson Invitational: The highlight of Hofstra s season to date was when it came in first place in the very competitive Clemson Invitational on Oct All four teams in the field Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Hofstra and Virginia Tech finished 1-1 over the weekend, but the Pride was declared the tournament champion based on goal differential. Hofstra dropped its first game against then #25 Coastal Carolina 3-2, despite taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. It then turned heads with a stunning 3-0 win over Clemson on Sunday, the program s first-ever win over an ACC team. Junior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament, while sophomore backs Gerd Schuster (Rosstal, Germany) and Gary Flood (Hauppauge, NY) and junior goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany) were named to the All- Tournament team. Lightning Strikes Twice: Hofstra had a wild finish in its game against #18 William & Mary on Friday, Oct. 8. The two teams played to a scoreless deadlock for 89 minutes, but the Pride broke the tie on a goal from junior forward Jason Gates (Fort Collins, CO) with exactly 1:00 remaining. However, just 23 seconds later, William & Mary answered back with a goal to even the score at 1-1, which was how it ended after the two overtime sessions. Pride vs. Ranked Teams: Hofstra s 1-0 overtime loss to #16 VCU on Friday evening was its ninth game against a nationally-ranked team in its three seasons in the CAA. The Pride is in those nine games, with all but one decided by a single goall. The only exception was a 3-0 defeat at VCU in Hofstra also defeated #19 Yale 1-0 in 2002 and #24 William & Mary 2-1 in Its defeats have come to #17 Hartwick (1-0), #13 VCU (1-0, OT), and #4 Old Dominion (1-0) last year, and to VCU and #25 Coastal Carolina (3-2) this season. The tie was a 1-1 draw with #18 William & Mary back on Oct. 8. The Pride has one more ranked team on its schedule, James Madison, who it meets at home on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. Gumbrecht Gets Fourth Shutout: Junior goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany) has already matched his career high with four shutouts so far this season, equaling the total that he has last season. He picked up his fourth shutout when he had four saves to get the clean sheet in the Pride s 3-0 win over Clemson on Oct. 3. Hofstra s first four wins this season all came on Gumbrecht shutouts, including 3-0 wins over Clemson and St. Francis (N.Y.), a 1-0 win over St. Peter s and a 1-0 overtime win over Temple. That streak finally stopped when the Pride defeated UNC Wilmington on Sunday by a 3-2 score. 2

3 Game 1 Recap: (Hofstra 1, St. Peter s 0): Senior forward Pablo Lara converted on the game's only goal with 16:48 left in the game as the Hofstra Men's Soccer team opened up its 50th Anniversary season with a 1-0 win over Saint Peter's on Wednesday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Hofstra, which started its men's soccer program in 1954, opened the season with a regulation win for the first time since 1999 against Fordham. It also opened the 2002 season with an overtime win over UMBC. Saint Peter's meanwhile, opens up its season at 0-1 after finishing the 2003 campaign with an record. Lara converted after breaking in alone on Saint Peter's goalkeeper Pat Nagawiecki for the second time in a span of seven minutes. The first time, he was sent in alone along the right edge of the penalty box, but lined a shot directly at Nagawiecki. The second time, sophomore Paulo Walters flicked a header that sent Lara in alone on the left edge of the penalty box. Lara took advantage of the second chance and beat Nagawiecki cleanly for his first career goal with the Pride after transferring from Mitchell Junior College in Junior goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht had four saves to record the shutout for the Pride, which was outshot 14-6 overall, but put five shots on net, compared to four for the Peacocks. Nagawiecki also had four saves for Saint Peter's in the losing effort. Game 2 Recap (Columbia 4, Hofstra 0): Senior midfielder Thorsteinn Gestsson scored two goals, including the first goal just 1:39 into the contest, as the Columbia Men s Soccer team cruised past Hofstra for a 4-0 win on Monday evening at Baker Field. With the win, Columbia improves its record to on the young season, while Hofstra sees its record fall to 1-1 after opening the season with a 1-0 home win over Saint Peter s. Gestsson gave the Lions the early lead when he got to a loose ball in the penalty box after his initial shot was blocked by a Hofstra defender. Gestsson jumped and half-volleyed a shot with his right foot past Hofstra goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany). Columbia then extended its lead to 2-0 just under 10 minutes later off a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder John Mulhern drove a ball to the far post, and junior defender Blake Lindberg leapt over a Hofstra defender and lined a header into the back of the net. The Lions withstood some solid pressure from the Pride in the first 20 minutes of the second half. but ended any comeback hopes when Gestsson scored his second goal of the game off a crossing pass from freshman forward Tom Davison. Davison then capped off the scoring himself on a spectacular shot, taking a direct kick from Mulhern and half-volleying the ball with his back to the goal 15 yards out just inside the left post. Hofstra was only outshot for the game, but could not manage to beat senior goalkeeper Dean Arnaoutakis, who had seven saves to get the shutout. Game 3 Recap (Hofstra 1, Temple 0): Senior midfielder Brandon Quaranta scored 1:40 into the first overtime to give the Hofstra Men's Soccer team a 1-0 win over Temple on the first day of the FieldTurf Courtyard by Marriott LaGuardia Soccer Classic at Long Island University on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Pride improves its record to 2-1 on the young season, while Temple drops to 0-3. The gamewinning goal was scored early in the overtime session off of a Hofstra throw-in near the Temple corner flag. Sophomore back Gary Flood took the throw-in and sent a ball inside the penalty area. Temple goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan came off his line to punch the ball outside the box, but Quaranta was trailing behind the play and was able to run onto the ball uncontested 25 yards from goal. He then one-timed a line drive before Hannigan could recover that sailed inside the right post for the game-winner. The goal was Quaranta's first as a member of the Pride after transferring from Maryland-Baltimore County, where he played his first three seasons. Hofstra controlled play for most of the game, outshooting the Owls 21-7 for the game, including 10-1 after intermission. Temple's only shot after halftime came on a direct kick from 30 yards out that sailed wide. Hannigan had seven saves to keep the game scoreless through regulation, while junior goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht had two saves to get the shutout for the Pride. Game 4 Recap: (Pittsburgh 2, Hofstra 1): Dwayne Grant-Higgins scored with 7:14 left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and give the Pittsburgh Men's Soccer team a 2-1 win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at the Field Turf Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic at Long Island University. Hofstra finished second overall at the tournament (1-1) behind Pittsburgh, which captured the title with a mark over the weekend. The game-winning goal was set up when Panther forward Keeyan Young earned control of the ball near the right sideline. He sent a low cross through the top of the penalty area, and Grant- Higgins was able to run onto it and one-time a shot that sailed inside the left post. Young gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead early in the game, when he ran onto a long ball from defender Brendon Smith just inside the right edge of the penalty area. Hofstra goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht came off his line to win the ball, but Young got there a step sooner and popped the ball over Gumbrecht and into the vacated net at the 13:56 mark. Hofstra bounced right back and even the score just 3:58 later. Sophomore midfielder Constantinos Christoudias scored his first goal with the Pride when he one-timed a cross from junior forward Michael Todd under the crossbar. Jorgensen finished with eight saves for Pittsburgh, while Gumbrecht had one save for Hofstra. The Pride held a edge in shot attempts and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. 3

4 Game 5 Recap (Stony Brook 2, Hofstra 0): Goalkeeper E.J. Xikis had 11 saves to record the shutout and Chris Megaloudis added a goal and an assist as the Stony Brook Men's Soccer team captured a 2-0 win over Hofstra before 887 fans at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening. The loss drops Hofstra's record to 2-3 on the season, while spoiling its Alumni Day celebration, which included the 50th anniversary of the inaugural 1954 team. Stony Brook improves to 4-1 with the win. Hofstra outshot Stony Brook 18-8 on the day, but the Seawolves took advantage of an early scoring opportunity in the sixth minute, then sealed the game with a clincher in the 89th minute. Megaloudis helped set up the first goal when he took a diagonal pass from midfielder Adam Ciklic and sent a hard cross into the front of the goal area. Chris Scarpati then made a run straight down the middle of the box and flicked a shot inside the near post from 12 yards out. Stony Brook then withstood some strong Hofstra pressure for much of the second half. Freshman forward Chris Cox had the best chance to score when his shot from 15 yards out rattled off the crossbar. Junior forward Michael Todd and sophomore back Billy Chung both had shots from inside 12 yards smothered by Xikis. The Seawolves then put the game away late when Megaloudis scored off a pass from Yahaya Musa on a 2-on-1 break. Game 6 Recap (Marist 3, Hofstra 1): Junior forward Michael Todd scored his first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as Marist scored three unanswered goals to defeat Hofstra, 3-1, on Wednesday evening at Leonidoff Field. With the loss, Hofstra sees its record move to 2-4 on the season, while Marist improves its record to 2-4. Todd got the Pride on the board early when he was sent through alone on net by senior midfielder Matthew Telling. Marist goalkeeper Mike Valenti came out of the net, but Todd was able to get there first and take a dribble past Valenti to the right side of the penalty area. After maneuvering around a Marist defender, Todd took a shot that was headed towards the far post, but was deflected in by another Red Fox defender at the 8:42 mark. Marist, though, pulled even with 15:57 left in the first half, when Keith DeTelj converted on a crossing pass at the far post after a scramble in front of the Hofstra net. The Red Foxes took the lead for good with just 2:19 left in the first half, as Anthony Graci dribbled through three Hofstra defenders before blasting a shot from 20 yards out that got by Hofstra goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht and into the lower right corner. Marist added an insurance goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation when Bruno Machado counter-attacked and fired a low shot from 25 yards out that rolled into the lower right corner. Gumbrecht had seven saves for Hofstra, which was outshot Valenti had three saves for Marist. Game 7 Recap (Hofstra 3, St. Francis 0): Junior forward Michael Todd had a goal and two assists to lead the Hofstra Men's Soccer team to a 3-0 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Pride improves to 3-4 on the season while snapping a modest three-game losing streak. St. Francis, meanwhile, slips to with the loss. Hofstra got on the board first on a goal from senior midfielder Pablo Lara at the 24:19 mark of the first half. Todd set up the play when he worked a perfect give-and-go with freshman forward Chris Cox. Cox slipped a low shot past St. Francis goalkeeper Karl-Anders Knutsen, but it caromed off the far post. Lara was trailing the play, though, and blasted home the rebound from 10 yards out for his second goal of the season. The Pride extended its lead to 2-0 just 10:26 into the second half. Senior midfielder Matthew Telling sent a long pass to Todd down the right sideline behind the defense. Todd then sent a hard cross through the penalty area, where sophomore midfielder Constantinos Christoudias laid out for a diving header from 10 yards out that slipped inside the near post. Todd closed out the scoring with 55 seconds left in the contest, as Christoudias returned the favor by nodding a header forward that sent Todd in alone behind the defense. Todd dribbled just inside the penalty area, before blasting a rocket into the upper-left corner. Hofstra controlled play throughout, outshooting the Terriers Junior goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht had two saves to get the shutout. Game 8 Recap (Coastal Carolina 3, Hofstra 2): The 25th-ranked Coastal Carolina Men's Soccer team scored three second half goals to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit and capture a 3-2 win over Hofstra on Friday night at the Clemson Invitational. Sophomore midfielder Arman Osooli had a goal and an assist in the first half to stake the Pride to the 2-0 halftime lead. He scored his first career goal for Hofstra a the 14:37 mark when he converted off a corner kick taken by junior back Billy Chung. With the victory, the Pride improves its record to 4-5 on the season while picking up its first-ever win against an Atlantic Coast Conference team.
