The Pride and Old Dominion are both with three games to play, while James Madison and William & Mary are a half-game behind at 6-2. The Pride shut out 11 straight CAA opponents before seeing the streak snapped in overtime of its last contest, a 1-0 loss to William & Mary on Oct. 12. The streak lasted 1,120 minutes (18 hours and 20 minutes), covering the last four regular season games last year, both CAA Tournament games, and the first five CAA games this year (plus all of regulation of the William & Mary contest). Hofstra did not allow a regulation goal in 13 straight games against CAA teams, before Sunday s 4-3 win over Georgia State. Senior goalkeeper Krystal Robens set school records last year for most shutouts in a season (12), which also broke the CAA record, and most consecutive shutouts (7). She has seven shutouts and two combined shutouts this year. The Pride is all-time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium since it opened in The Pride is also overall at home since Hofstra starts five seniors on its defensive unit including goalkeeper Krystal Robens and backs Jess Crankshaw, Marie Curtin, Kariena Richards and Sara Gulley. Senior back Marie Curtin is third on Hofstra s all-time assist list with 21, one shy of second place. Senior back Jess Crankshaw has 16 assists, one shy of fourth place. Senior midfielder Edel Malone was one of 47 players named to the Preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List. Malone and senior defender Marie Curtin were both named to the Preseason All-CAA team. The Pride was picked to finish third in a preseason vote of CAA coaches. William & Mary (112 points), James Madison (111 points) and Hofstra (107 points) were in a close three-way race. Freshman midfielder Courtney Breen was named the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring the game-winner in the Pride s 4-3 win over Georgia State. Hofstra has not had a two-goal scorer this season and only once has had a player have a goal and an assist in the same game (Tiffany Yovino vs. George Mason). 2 Last Week Recap: Hofstra moved into a tie for first place in the CAA with a pair of home wins, defeating UNC Wilmington 2-0 on Friday and Georgia State 4-3 on Sunday. The Pride used a second-half goal from sophomore forward Salma Tarik (Bellmore, NY) on Friday to break a scoreless tie and capture the win. Senior defender Marie Curtin (Kilmallock, Ireland) added an insurance goal in the final minute on a penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Krystal Robens (East Taunton, MA) had three saves to get her seventh shutout of the season. On Sunday, the Pride withstood a furious second half rally from Georgia State to come away with a 4-3 win, as freshman midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, NY) broke a 3-3 tie with a goal with just 7:24 remaining in regulation. Hofstra led 2-0 at the half behind goals from Tarik and sophomore forward Dana Bergstrom (Billerica, MA) and appeared to be on its way to an easy win, as Georgia State goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship made seven first-half saves to keep the score close. However, the momentum changed in the second half when the Panthers had the wind at their back, and they tied the score up at 2-2 in the 67 th minute. Just 30 seconds later, sophomore forward Kayla Pifer (State College, PA) gave Hofstra a 3-2 lead with a 23-yard blast into the upper-left corner, but Georgia State answered back again with 9:11 to go before Breen broke the tie for good. Hofstra had not allowed a regulation goal in its last 13 games against CAA teams, before the Panthers scored three in the second half. Conference Shutout Streak Ends: Hofstra picked up its 11 th straight shutout against CAA teams (including CAA Tournament games) in a 0-0 tie with Old Dominion on Oct. 10 and made it through regulation of a 12 th straight game against William & Mary on Oct. 12 before allowing an overtime goal in a 1-0 loss. The shutout streak dated back to a late goal by James Madison in a 2-0 home loss to the Dukes last season, covering a span of 1,120 minutes of playing time (18 hours, 40 minutes) and 359 calendar days. Hofstra picked up another shutout against UNC Wilmington on Friday to extend its streak to 13 straight games against CAA teams without a regulation goal, before Georgia State solved the Pride defense in the second half of Hofstra s 4-3 win on Sunday. Dominating Their Rivals: Hofstra made the move to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2002 after playing in the America East from , joining the CAA with America East rivals Delaware, Drexel and Towson. Since the four teams joined the CAA, Hofstra is a perfect 23-0 against the other three schools (9-0 against Delaware - including two postseason games, 7-0 against Drexel, and 7-0 against Towson). Big Cleats To Fill: Hofstra returned eight starters from last season s team, which finished with a school record 18 wins and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. However, the Pride needed to replace the first two All-Americans in the history of the program. Defender Sue Weber was a two-time All-American and a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. Forward Brooke DeRosa, meanwhile, earned All-America honors after scoring 14 goals. Both players went on to play for the Long Island Rough Riders in the W-League this past summer, with Weber earning the Defensive Player of the Year Award in the 41-team league. Weber was drafted in the third round (18 th overall) of the WPS earlier this month by the Boston Breakers. An Experienced Defense: Hofstra may be without its most decorated player in school history from its starting defense last year in Sue Weber, but the nucleus returning to the defensive unit is still quite impressive. In fact, the Pride has four senior starters in its back four to go along with a senior goalie. Senior Krystal Robens (Taunton, MA) set a school record with 12 shutouts last year as the Pride s starting goalie. In front of her, seniors Sara Gulley (Burke, VA), Kariena Richards (Midleton, Ireland) and Jess Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) all returned to their starting spots. The one spot left from Weber s departure has been filled by senior Marie Curtin (Kilmallock, Ireland), who missed last season to play for the Irish national team, but was a twotime first-team All-CAA selection as a center back in 2004 and Senior Kristine Suapengco (Dix Hills, NY) also started at center back as a freshman in 2004 but has suffered several knee injuries over the course of her career and sat out last season before making her first appearance of 2008 on Sunday against Georgia State. Robens Rewrites Record Book: Senior goalkeeper Krystal Robens (Taunton, MA) set a school records last year for most shutouts in a season with 12, which also broke the Colonial Athletic Association record. Included in that total was a school-record seven straight shutouts, a span which included three postseason games (two CAA Tournament, one NCAA Tournament). Penn State broke the shutout streak in the second round of the NCAA Tournament just 14 seconds shy of her eighth in a row. Robens actually began her career as a position player in 2004, but redshirted in 2005 as she converted to goalie. Robens has seven shutouts so far this season (and two combined shutouts), giving her 19 solo shutouts in the last two years. Crank It Up: Senior defender Jess Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) provided a significant offensive spark last year, in addition to being part of a defensive unit that set school records for shutouts and consecutive shutouts. Due largely to her skill on corners and direct kicks, Crankshaw led the Pride in assists last year with nine, all of which came against CAA opponents. The nine assists also marked the third highest single-season total in school history. After playing every minute of every game as a freshman in 2005, when the Pride made its first NCAA appearance, she suffered an ACL tear early in the 2006 season and returned last year to help lead Hofstra back to the NCAA s once again. Crankshaw assisted on the game-winning goal against George Mason on Oct. 3 and now has 16 assists in her career. If she takes her medical redshirt season next fall, she could challenge the school s career assist record of 26, held by Jerilyn Marinan ( ), an impressive feat for a defensive player. Curtin Climbing Assist Charts: Senior defender Marie Curtin (Kilmallock, Ireland) picked up her 21st career assist on the only goal of the game in the Pride s 1-0 win over Towson on Oct. 5. She is now only five assists shy of the school record held by Jerilyn Marinan ( ). Curtin is alone in third place, just one behind fellow Irish National Team member Elaine O Connor ( ), who graduated with 22 assists. Senior defender Jess Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) also has 16 career assists, putting her in eighth place, and she would have one more year of eligibility left after this season if she chooses to use it.

3 The Magic Touch: Senior midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland) has made a huge difference in the Pride s success since joining the program in As a freshman, she had the only goal in a 1-0 win over VCU in the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association championship game. She then missed all of 2006 with a knee injury as Hofstra slumped to a finish and did not qualify for the CAA Tournament. Last year, she was back and healthy, and once again scored the game-winning goal in the Colonial Athletic Association championship, another 1-0 win over VCU. She then added the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A Tight Race: Hofstra is currently tied for first in the CAA at in conference play with three games left. Old Dominion is also (and the two teams have already played to a 0-0 tie), while James Madison and William & Mary are both close behind at 6-2, while UNC Wilmington is 5-3, VCU is and Northeastern is 4-4. The Pride closes out with a pair of tough road games this weekend at VCU and at James Madison before its finale at home against Northeastern next week. Moving Forward: Sophomore midfielder Tiffany Yovino (Holtsville, NY) earned freshman All-America honors last season after playing a key role in the Pride s defensive midfield, helping Hofstra set a school record with 12 shutouts. This year, she has moved forward to an attacking midfield role and has proven to be proficient in that spot as well. Yovino currently leads the Pride in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points. She has also had three shots hit the post or crossbar this season, and had another would-be goal cleared off the line by a defender. Irish Connection Continues: Hofstra has clearly had a successful history of recruiting in Ireland, with recent graduates Elaine O Connor ( 03), Dolores Deasley ( 03) and Emma Kilduff ( 04) all having an impact on the program s success. This year s team features four veteran Irish players in seniors Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland), Marie Curtin (Kilmallock, Ireland) and Kariena Richards (Midleton, Ireland), and Junior Diane Caldwell (Balbriggan, Ireland). Malone, Curtin and Caldwell have all been regular participants on the Irish national team, while Richards has previously served as the captain of the Irish Under-19 squad. The Irish connection helped the Pride to its two wins on the weekend of Sept. 5-7, as Malone assisted Caldwell on the only goal of the game against Columbia on Sept. 5, and Curtin picked up the assist in the only goal of the game against Princeton on Sept. 7. In a 3-3 tie against Central Connecticut on Sept. 21, Caldwell and Malone scored Hofstra s first two goals, while Curtin assisted on the third. Caldwell scored the game-winner against George Mason on Oct. 3 and Curtin assisted on the game-winner against Towson on Oct. 5. Breen, Greene Earn CAA Co-Rookie Of Week Honors: Freshman midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, NY) and freshman forward Laura Greene (Holbrook, NY) have earned CAA Co-Rookie of the Week honors on Oct. 20 and Sept. 29, respectively. Breen earned the honor on Monday after scoring the game-winning goal with 7:24 left in the Pride s 4-3 win over Georgia State. Greene picked up honors, meanwhile, after scoring the game-winner in Hofstra's 1-0 win over Delaware on Sept. 26. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra picked up two wins at home against UNC Wilmington and Georgia State last weekend. The Pride is now all-time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium since the facility first opened at the start of the 2003 campaign. Hofstra has also compiled an impressive record at home since the start of the 1999 season, when it played at the old University Field (see chart below). Dating back to its days as a member of the 10-team America East Conference, Hofstra has finished third or higher in its conference standings in eight of the last nine years, including seven straight seasons from The streak finally ended with a seventh-place finish in an injury-plagued 2006 season. The Pride, though, bounced back to finish 9-2 in the CAA last year, good for second place in the regular season standings, before going on to win the postseason title. Weber, a two-time All-American who led the Pride to two CAA titles and NCAA Tournament berths, is one of 20 Hofstra student-athletes who will have their numbers retired this year. Freshman Katja Riihiaho (Vantaa, Finland) is currently wearing #20 and will be able to wear that number for the remainder of the season. Malone, Curtin Earn Preseason Honors: Senior midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland) was one of 47 players named to the Preseason Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List. The Hermann Trophy is given out to the top Division I men s soccer and women s soccer players in the nation. Malone and senior defender Marie Curtin (Kilmallock, Ireland) were named to the Preseason All-CAA team.
