3 Last Season vs. Griffs Air Force and Canisius also met last season in the Frontier Airlines Faceoff Classic in Denver last season. Canisius beat Air Force, 7-6. Air Force scored the first goal of the game, but Canisius quickly tied the game and the Falcons never regained the lead in a tight contest. Canisius led 5-3 at the half, but goals by Tommy McKee and Erik Smith tied the game at 5-5 in the third period. Canisius scored the next two goals and held on for a 7-6 win. Last Week Freshman Chris Walsch recorded a career-high five goals, but the Air Force lacrosse team suffered a narrow 7-6 defeat to Marist on Saturday, Feb. 14, during the Falcons home opener at Falcon Stadium. The Falcons fell to 0-2 on the year and 1-1 all-time against the Red Foxes. Marist jumped out to an early advantage, taking a 5-1 lead midway through the second period. Walsch, who scored for Air Force at 10:24 in the first period and at 7:48 in the second, completed a first-half hat trick with six seconds left to cut the Red Foxes lead to two (5-3) at the break. Walsch notched the Falcons first score of the second half, finding the back of the net at the 10:26 mark of the third period. Senior Keith Dreyer added a goal two minutes later that evened the score at five. The Red Foxes answered with a pair of goals in the fourth to take another two-goal lead, but Walsch recorded his fifth score of the day and brought the Falcons within one (7-6) with just over two minutes left in the game. Air Force peppered the Marist goal with attempts in the last minute, but the final horn sounded before the Falcons could find the back of the net. In addition to his goal, Dreyer also paced the team with a pair of assists. Classmate Nate Hruby, freshman Nick Hruby and sophomore Austin Smith each recorded an assist. Junior Doug Gouchoe played all 60 minutes in goal for the Falcons and accounted for six saves. Gouchoe also tied with Walsch for the team lead in groundballs, as both collected five. Air Force outshot the Red Foxes 41-21, including a 27-8 advantage in the second half. Inside the Numbers Freshman Chris Walsch leads the team with six goals, including five against Marist. Keith Dreyer is second on the team with four points (2-2-4). Junior Doug Gouchoe has played all 120 minutes between the pipes and has made 19 saves. In total shots, Air Force has 74 while allowing 62. Air Force has won 63 ground balls while the opponents have won 62. Who s Back Air Force lost four of its top five scorers from last season. Senior Keith Dreyer, a first-team all-conference selection last season, is the team s top returning scorer from last season, having 17 goals, 31 assists and 48 points. Junior Christopher Allen had 21 goals and 24 points last season. Sophomore Austin Smith, the team s rookie of the year last season, had 11 goals and 16 points last season. Junior Alex Warden, a second-team all-conference selection last season, was named the team s top defensive player last season. Road Swing Ahead Beginning this week, the Falcons will play five straight on the road. The road stretch begins with two games at the Frontier Airlines Classic in Denver as the Falcons with face No. 1 Denver and Canisius. Air Force will then play road games against Furman (Feb. 28), Vermont (March 7) and VMI (March 8) before returning home to host Detroit Mercy, March 14. Looking Back The Air Force lacrosse team had its most successful season in program history in 2014, compiling an 11-6 overall record and 3-1 mark in the ECAC Lacrosse League, securing its first winning season since 1997 and highest win total since The Falcons were able to clinch a share of the regular-season conference title before going on to win the ECAC Tournament title, earning their first NCAA bid since Air Force defeated Richmond in the NCAA play-in game, capturing its first NCAA tournament win in program history, before dropping a first-round match-up to defending national champion Duke. An Independent in 2015 The Falcons will compete as an independent in 2015, playing 15 games with six at home, five on the road and four neutral site contests. In 2016, Air Force will compete in the Southern Conference. This season, Air Force will face six of the seven teams from the SoCon as Bellarmine, Furman, High Point, Jacksonville, Mercer and VMI are on the schedule. The only SoCon team the Falcons will not face this season is Richmond, a team Air Force defeated in the NCAA Play-In game last season.
