South Calgary Ringette Summer Communication 2016 Summer 2016 Features: Changes to the Ringette Alberta Tiering Policy for levels U12 and U14. SCRA U10/U12 Thanksgiving Memorial Tournament Save the Date! October 7-8, 2016 PICTURE DAY Welcome to the Summer Communication of South Calgary Ringette. This newsletter will keep you up to date on all the happenings including: new people in new roles, work that has gone on through the summer, changes coming up in the new season! SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2016 South Calgary Ringette is operated by Volunteers. Contact our Volunteer coordinators to secure a position for the upcoming season. Registration for 2016/2017 Season is now closed! South Calgary Ringette Association would like to thank you for registering. Registrations may still be accepted based on availability and SCRA approval. Stay tuned for Evaluation dates which will start after the September Long Weekend! Further Registration questions can be directed to Constance Park at vpregistration@southcalgaryringette.com
Volunteers are the core of South Calgary Ringette and keep the Association running smoothly and moving forward, both during the season as well as the off-season. We would like to thank all of our volunteers for their continued volunteering and establishing many programs over the last few years. The following volunteers have moved on from their positions and would like to thank them for all their hard work and countless hours: Garry Kane: President. Accepted a new role as President of Ringette Calgary Kim Park: Treasurer. Patrick Simmons: VP Administration. Volunteers: New people in new positions Paul Wilson: VP Player Development / LTAD. Kraig McConaghy: Goalie Development Kimberley Veale: Coaching Development. South Calgary Ringette has numerous people who have stepped up into a variety of positions, including the positions above, and will be posted shortly to the website! The Association has a number of key roles within the Organization that need to be filled to be successful. Of those, we are in need of a Treasurer, as well as an Ice Scheduler. As in any transfer of position, the new candidate will be guided through the season, and not left alone to learn the role on their own. If you are interested in filling one of these positions, please contact a member on the board, or our Volunteer Coordinator! Interested in volunteering? Please contact Ella Wilson at volunteer@southcalgaryringette.com.
SCRA VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Association Volunteer Requirements: Each family is required to provide volunteer support worth 100 points per child registered. If you have two or more children registered with SCRA, your family's commitment is at a maximum of 200 points. Each 100 points is the equivalent of 8 volunteer hours. (i.e. a 4 hour Bingo shift would be worth 50 points). Upon registration, you can view how many points each role is allotted (ie. a team coach volunteer role is worth 200 points). Please note that if your family does not fulfill SCRA's volunteer commitment during the season, a charge of $250 per child registered ($500 max) will be added to the account, requiring payment during the registration for the season. This is a mandatory program that will be enforced. Those who have not complied will not be able to register for the following season until the volunteer bond has been paid. Volunteer hours/ points cannot be carried over to the following season as we are in need of assistance every year to help grow and sustain our association. Team Roles vs. Association roles: Upon registration, there is a list of approved "Association" roles you can choose from. These positions, such as SCRA board members, Bingo/ Casino shifts, Tournament Coordinators, Evaluators, Coaches etc. help run the association as a whole. Association roles are positions that count towards your family volunteer commitment. Team roles are those participated in, within each individual team. These roles are mandatory and essential for each team to function. These roles consist of shot clock operators, team social coordinators, scorekeepers, penalty box volunteers etc. Team roles DO NOT count towards your family volunteer commitment. The only team positions that are also Association roles are Team Managers and Coaches. Volunteer shifts during Esso Golden Ring Tournament (EGRT) also DO NOT count towards your volunteer commitment. It is mandatory for each team to provide volunteers. These roles are again essential for the tournament to run. However, every year, SCRA requires 3-4 members to represent the association and attend EGRT organization meetings. These volunteers that attend the meetings do receive credit that counts towards their volunteer bond.
Evals Start September 6th! Evaluations: 2016/2017 Season Based on feedback from previous seasons, and additional guidelines from Ringette Calgary and Ringette Alberta, South Calgary Ringette will see some small changes in terms of team formation and the tiering formula. Parents and players will not notice any difference in our Evaluation Process as compared to last year. The Evaluations team is busy setting up the ice times for each age. This year, Universal Athlete Assessment (UAA) will once again be conducted initially for U10, U12 and U14 age groups as part of the first round of evaluations. These UAA evaluations are mandatory as per Ringette Alberta. Parents from every age group (except Active Start) can expect to be contacted by the Evaluation Age Coordinators in the coming days: Active Start Age Coordinator U10 Age Coordinator U12 Age Coordinator U14 Age Coordinator U16 Age Coordinator U19 Age Coordinators Melissa Kuehner Rhonda Stanley, Treena Bray Dominique Stadel Jenny McConaghy Sara King Wendy Cook Parents of U12 players in the upcoming season, can log onto and view the document called U12 What to expect. For questions related to evaluations, please contact your Age Coordinator. Contact information can be found on the South Calgary Website.
2015/2016 Shaker Success! Congratulations This year's Shaker held on January 22nd at Donegal s Irish Pub, one again proved to be an immense success raising over $16,000 for SCRA's ice fund. Not only was it a fundraising success due to our amazing wine raffle and silent auction, but it was a fantastic night of fun for everyone in SCRA who attended! A huge thanks goes out to all our donors and sponsors for their support and to the Shaker committee: Leanne Lesko, Lianne Capper, Becca Fisk, Jenny McConaghy, Chantelle Niro, Heather Mcdonald, Kelly Lyle, who worked for many hours to pull off an amazing night. Thank You!!! Kim Marion SCRA Shaker Coordinator Congratulations go out to all of our players in all divisions for a great season! Our association saw a number of teams go through to the provincials! Many other teams saw great success at numerous tournaments across the province in all age groups! The Shaker committee is looking for a new coordinator role for the upcoming season. If you are interested, contact the SCRA Volunteer Coordinator. Interested in being a part of the organizing committee for the 2016/2017 Shaker? Please contact volunteer@southcalgaryringette.com or any South Calgary Board Member. For those South Calgary Ringette players who are moving on to Calgary Open Ringette, and University Ringette, best of luck to you and your new teams!!! SCRA SCHOLARSHIP Jena Heal was awarded the $1000 SCRA Scholarship. Jena is currently a member of the Lethbridge Pronghorns, and studying at the University of Lethbridge. The application process for the current year scholarship will be posted soon on our website.
Universal Athletic Assessment Universal Athletic Assessment (UAA) is a requirement of Ringette Alberta. This program was introduced in the season as a Pilot Program, with becoming the first year of formal testing within South Calgary Ringette. Volunteer effort within South Calgary Ringette last year was very impressive! We hope to see a lot of the same people back to once again help us complete the testing for the U10 to the U14 levels. For the upcoming 2016/17 season, South Calgary Ringette will once again use the UAA testing as a first round to the Evaluation Process, as well as use the results to contribute to the new tiering process as set out by Ringette Alberta. The intent of UAA is as follows: - Become the first step in the U10 U14 evaluation process, replacing the initial skill based assessment. - To provide an unbiased quantitative measure of the athletes skill for development purposes. - To facilitate team allocation per division vs. the current formula based approach. A guideline outlining the specifics on UAA testing will be made available on the SCRA website in the coming weeks. Please note that a minimum of twelve (12) volunteers are required to run each UAA session. These volunteer positions: - will fulfill the volunteer requirements of an athlete registered with SCRA for the 2016/17 season. - will replace the need for evaluators previously needed for the initial skills focused ice session. Please submit any interest in participating as a UAA volunteer to the SCRA Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@southcalgaryringette.com. If there are any questions relating to UAA, please contact the SCRA UAA Coordinator at uaa@southcalgaryringette.com. Interested in learning more about UAA? Please view the documents on our website at South Calgary UAA Guidelines South Calgary Team Wear Team wear sales will once again be taking place during evaluations. Watch for reminder s to notify you of dates for your specific age group. Please note, all players/teams must purchase their team wear through South Calgary Ringette. We will continue to offer hoodies, sweat pants, toques, workout shirts plus a variety of new items!
Police Information Checks: New Process Due to program changes, Volunteer Alberta is currently no longer funding police checks for volunteer organizations until further notice. However, SCRA has decided it will reimburse these costs. The process for getting a police check will remain the same, however the applicant will need to pay when applying. A Volunteer Letter will be required to reduce the fee, the cost of which can then be submitted to SCRA for reimbursement. A police check is required for all bench staff at all levels. Bench staff includes Coaches and Assistant Coaches, and certain team volunteers such as Team Managers, On-ice Assistants and Dressing Room Assistants. Contact coachingadmin@southcalgaryringette.com to confirm the status of your police check and to get a Volunteer Letter, or to find out more information about applying for a Police Check. Information can also be found on the website at: SCRA Coach Information Shot Clock Training! Want to be a minor official and shot clock operator? Shot Clock Training dates will be posted soon for the 2016/2017 season. Please watch for sign up instructions on the South Calgary Website! South Calgary Ringette: Association Growth South Calgary Ringette has seen a healthy growth in the previous 3-4 years. With current registration numbers coming in, we are once again above last years numbers, seeing a great number of new players coming into the association! This is a result of a very successful Try Ringette program, as well as through our current Association Members. Thank you for your continued efforts to grow our wonderful game! U19 U16 U14 U12 U10 U7

U10/U12 Memorial Thanksgiving Tournament Plans are currently underway for South Calgary Ringette to hold the second annual Ava Esposito Memorial Tournament, the weekend of October 7-8, Ice has been booked at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre in Cochrane. Ice times will run from Friday afternoon through to Saturday afternoon. This tournament will be for U10 and U12 players. The goal of the tournament is to promote fundraising for a legacy endowment fund established in Ava s name. The fund will be used to provide annual donations in Ava s memory to various charitable organizations. A thank you to the current tournament committee members Mike Mysak, Jeff Morgan, Leanne Malhiot and Diane Scott for all the great work they have completed to this date, and for a successful tournament last year! The tournament committee is actively seeking corporate sponsorship opportunities. Please contact any of the committee members if you would like to participate in this capacity and be recognized as a corporate sponsor for what will be a great event! Casino Year! As part of the fundraising that contributes to the Ice Budget, South Calgary Ringette is able to secure Casino dates every second year. The South Calgary Casino dates for this season are November 26 th and 27 th at Elbow River Casino. South Calgary Ringette will require approximately 40 volunteers for this 2 day, 2 night event. This event will raise an approximate value of $65,000 for South Calgary Ringette, which is used to purchase ice for our athletes. In addition to the South Calgary Ringette casino dates, we will also require a number of volunteers to work a casino for Ringette Calgary. The dates for this one are December 26 th and Dec 27 th. Those folks who work the Christmas Casino, will receive full volunteer credit for the current season. This is an easy way to fulfill your commitment! If interested, please contact our Casino Coordinator or Volunteer Coordinator.
What s New? BOUNDARY REVIEW: As you are aware, Ringette Calgary is divided into 4 quadrants. These quadrant boundaries were established many years ago, and have not been reviewed or revisited. Last season, South Calgary Ringette raised a motion to review these boundaries. This is to ensure the quadrants see equal growth and have balanced numbers of players. The review of the Boundaries is still being looked at and will commence once the season is underway. There will be no changes in boundaries during the season. RAB TIERING POLICY: Ringette Alberta has modified the tiering policy for the 2016/2017 season for the U12 and U14 age groups. Previously, the formula was based on number of teams in a specific age group, and was built on a curve. For example, if you have 5 U12 teams, you would be required to ice 2A, 1B, and 2C. In an effort to increase competition and reduce the range of teams within a level, Ringette Alberta has opted to try a new policy that would use the UAA scores of the athletes to support teams at different levels. This may mean that in the example of 5 U12 teams, the association could have 1A 3B 1C, or 3B and 2C. Further Q&A on what UAA is and what it means for tiering at U12 and U4 can be found on Ringette Alberta s website at: UAA Information LITTLE NETS: If you had a player in the U10 or Active Start age groups last season and played outside of the city limits, you may have used Little Nets. The little net initiative was introduced last season as a pilot program throughout the process. After consultation with associations, parents and coaches, the decision was made by the Ringette Alberta Board to make Little Nets mandatory from the Active Start division, up to and including U10 Step 3.
