1 1 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION The Link Wayne County 4-H News The Ohio State University, The United States Department of Agriculture, and Wayne County Commissioners cooperating. Dear 4-H Volunteers, June is an exciting month for 4-H as our youth are getting fully engaged in their projects, club meetings, and countywide activities. Just looking at the 4-H calendar shows that nearly every day of our summer is packed full of 4-H opportunities. Your active involvement as club advisors, committee members, project leaders, and volunteers is what makes our 4-H program possible. Thank you for your continued service to 4-H! Sincerely, Douglas S. Foxx Retirement Open House Friday, June 24 11:00-2:00 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate the career of Marcia Brueck who will retire as Office Associate. Doug, I and the whole hiring committee were so impressed with Nicole! Her background, attitude and knowledge we feel will be a great fit into our program! We hope you find a chance to call, or stop by and introduce yourself to her! Nicole is a recent graduate of The Ohio State University, where she studied Animal Sciences and Production Agriculture. Also a graduate of ATI, Nicole is no stranger to Wayne County and is ecstatic to return and work in Wayne County. She comes to us from Wyandot County where she was actively involved in their 4-H Program! Some of her responsibilities with us include Skillathon, Quality Assurance, Cloverbuds, CARTEENS, Junior Leaders, Junior Fair Board, and the Dairy, Goat, and Poultry & Rabbit Committees. I am beyond excited to be a part of the impressive 4-H program that has been built here in Wayne County. To have this opportunity to work with and learn from the amazing folks in this county is a true honor. Nicole can be reached at swavel.5@osu.edu or Stephen Heppe 428 W. When a young person is injured or becomes ill, our policies pay first, regardless of other insurance. Thousands of claims are paid promptly each year. Parents appreciate not having out-ofpocket medical expenses, and Extension staff appreciate the good will this helps to generate for their local 4-H program. Remember to submit your coverage request before your activity begins. Additional information may be found at or call toll-free H Project Completion The completion of a 4-H project is considered to be the interview at still project judgings, FCS project judgings, or the participation at Skillathon for livestock projects. 4-H Scholarships The Wayne County 4-H Scholarship application form has been posted on our web site at and is also available from the Extension Office. It must be completed and returned to the Extension office by August 1st. Last year, 18 Wayne County 4-H youth received $5,000 in scholarships for college!

3 Group Project Guidelines 3 Many clubs take one or two club or group projects during the year. In order to add some uniformity to those projects throughout the county, here are some guidelines to help you: 1) Involve your 4-H members in selecting your club project and in setting the goals for it. 2) You may purchase a project book/leader s guide for the club or for each member. 3) A club/group project must be more than a one-time activity. For example: cooking one meal outdoors is a club activity; cooking several meals outdoors, learning about food safety and fire safety, etc. is a club project. 4) Clubs taking group projects should follow the project guidelines for that project or suggest alternative guidelines and discuss that with the 4-H educator. 5) Group projects may be repeated more than one year if different goals and activities are planned each year. This is especially important if the project is taken two years in succession. 6) 4-H members should do most of the work on the project with guidance from advisors and parents. 7) Group projects should be evaluated by one of our staff, another club s advisor, or another adult knowledgeable in that field in order to be complete. 8) If clubs wish to display their group projects at the fair for premiums, they must (a) make a fair entry for the project on each individual s entry form and (b) have an individual or group exhibit of some type not just a list of names on a poster. Ohio State Fair 4-H Handbook The 2016 handbook with 4-H non livestock information is posted on the web. The handbook has 4-H exhibit information for Family & Consumer Science (FCS), Ag Products, Still-Life, Public Speaking, and others. Visit for the handbook. OHIO STATE FAIR JR. LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS The premium book is available on-line for all exhibitor information at: To enter the 2016 Ohio State Fair, go to the website and download the information and entry forms you are interested in. Fill out the entry form(s) and mail to the Ohio State Fair Entry Department, postmarked NO LATER than June 20 or simply complete your entry online if available for your species. Members exhibiting through 4-H MUST HAVE an Extension employee s signature on their entry. Those exhibiting through FFA need to have their Vo-Ag Teacher s signature. Ohio State Fair Dog Show and Agility Entry Deadline is July 1, 2015 (postmark) Registration forms are found online at the bottom of the page at:

Our Junior Leaders have consented to build the bicycles and are challenging each 4-H club to raise or donate enough money to purchase at least one bike (approximate cost $65.00). If each of our 4-H clubs raised or donated enough money to purchase one bike, we would have 45. Some clubs may want to do two or three bikes, which would provide even more! Please start talking about this opportunity with your clubs! Each LINK from now to the end of the year will have information and updates on clubs that are giving/raising funds. Money can be given at any time of the year, but MUST be turned in to the Extension office by September 30th. Please discuss with your club how many bikes they might want to donate for Christmas. Let us know about your club s progress or plans! ALL HANDS ON DECK! September 20th will be a fun way to give back to our community and our fair! The 4-H Advisory Committee is sponsoring a 4-H Back to School drive to help support our communities. Wayne County 4-H clubs are encouraged to participate in this by collecting school supplies (markers, compasses, colored pencils, wide rule loose leaf paper, crayons, glue, etc.) at their summer club meetings.
