Page 7 4-H Mall Kickoff Page Project Book Changes...Page 7 Veterinary Feed Directive Meeting The OSU Extension, Miami County office will hold an informational meeting on January 10, at 6:30 p.m., on the new Veterinary Feed Directive. Starting January 1, 2017, veterinarians will need to write a feed directive or prescription for medically important drugs to be used in livestock feed and for specific health concerns. Veterinarian Tim McDermott, DVM, representatives from a local feed supply store, and OSU Extension will be on-hand to answer questions and explain how this will impact local producers. Livestock producers, 4-H and FFA parents are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be held at the Miami County Courthouse in the Extension Meeting room. 2 Page 2 GENERAL INFORMATION 2017 Quality Assurance Information 2017 Quality Assurance Schedule All market and lactating animal exhibitors must attend a Quality Assurance Session within the State of Ohio in order to exhibit an animal at the Miami County Fair. Exhibitors of swine must also receive PQA certification with the required Quality Assurance. The session must be conducted by a qualified instructor. Exhibitors ages have the option to take a test given by a qualified instructor to test out of Quality Assurance. TEST OUT OPTION There are two separate tests. One for year olds and one for year olds (Age as of January 1st). If you test out when you are 12, 13, or 14, you will have to test again when you turn 15. The test is 50 multiple choice questions and you must score at least a 70% (35 out of 50). The test is given in two categories - large (sheep, beef, swine, goats, and dairy) and small (poultry and rabbits) animals. If you exhibit in both, you can choose which test to take. The testing will be held at the Fairgrounds in the Secretary s Office on two dates: February 25th from 3:00 pm 5:00 pm *Preregister by February 20th February 27th from 6:30 pm 8:30 pm *Preregister by February 20th Please call the Extension office at to register. You only get one chance to pass the test each year. If you do not pass, then you must attend a regular Quality Assurance session. QUALITY ASSURANCE SESSIONS The regular Quality Assurance sessions will be held in the Duke Lundgard Building on: Monday, April 24, 6:30 pm Saturday, May 6, 10:00 am & 2:00 pm Sunday, May 7, 3:00 pm Monday, May 8, 6:30 pm Saturday, May 13, 10:00 am & 2:00 pm There is no pre-registration required for the regular Q.A. sessions. 3 Page 3 January/February 2017 Mandatory 4-H Advisor Trainings & Updates All Ohio 4-H volunteers are required to participate annually in Policy 1.50 Training: Activities and Programs with Minor Participants. The training will be held at the beginning of each 4-H Advisor Update and New 4-H Volunteer Orientation. All sessions will be conducted at the Extension Office. Below is a list of meeting dates. Policy 1.50 Training and Advisor Updates: 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 20 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 9 12:00 p.m., Monday, February 20 6:30 p.m., Monday, February 20 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 23 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 2 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 21 4-H Trip Information Attention 4-H members, ages 14-18, as of Jan. 1, applications for state and national trips are now available! Trip applicants need only submit a resume and interview. The resume format and trip descriptions will be available on the O.S.U. Extension, Miami County website, miami.osu.edu the first week of January. Resumes are due January 23. Interviews are 6:30 pm, Thursday, January 26th in the Extension Meeting Room. Food & Fashion Board The 2017 Food & Fashion Board application will be available on our website, miami.osu.edu, the first week of January. Members who are at least age 12 (as of Jan. 1) or older, have been enrolled in 4-H for at least two consecutive years, and have previously completed (or will be enrolled in 2017) at least one FCS project, are eligible to apply. Applications are due February 24. Volunteer Orientations New 4-H Volunteer Orientation is one of the most important parts of the volunteer application process. Potential volunteers will receive an overview of the organization, review our philosophy, policies, and procedures, have an opportunity to ask questions, meet their peers, and gain knowledge about the 4-H Youth Development program. Cloverbud 4-H members (youth age 5 and in Kindergarten as of January 1 through second grade) may only enroll in clubs that have a volunteer who has completed Cloverbud Volunteer Orientation. If not already an existing advisor, and seeking to become a Cloverbud volunteer, you must attend Policy 1.50 Training, New 4-H Volunteer Orientation and Cloverbud Volunteer Orientation. Veterinary Feed Directive: Update from State 4-H Office Starting January 1, 2017, the owners of food-producing animals must have a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) to be able to purchase feeds containing certain types of antibiotics per FDA regulations. Recall that a VFD is a written statement issued by a licensed veterinarian to a client. To obtain a VFD, the owner of food-producing animals must have a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). In a VCPR, the client is defined as either the owner or primary caretaker of the animals and is the person responsible for their on-going feeding and care. (**See link below for more info.) We ve become aware that incorrect information may be spreading throughout the state about the possibility of 4-H advisors being able to get a VFD for all of their club members. This is not a permissible practice. Each 4-H member (family) is responsible for establishing a VCPR to be able to get a VFD if needed. The 4-H members should be the ones responsible for their animals feeding and care the majority of the time, even if their animals are housed on someone else s property. While you may hear from producers, feed distributors, and clientele that 4-H advisors can obtain one VFD for their club, the accurate information is the 4-H member (parent/guardian) are the owner/caretaker of their livestock projects and will need to obtain any VFD they might need to properly care for their food-producing animals. To write a VFD, veterinarians must personally see the 4-H members animals, become acquainted with their care, and have done so recently enough (within the last six months) that they can make medical judgements. Veterinarians should not write a VFD for an entire club. To be clear: 4-H advisors may not get a VFD for their club members. **For other information about the VFD refer to the Veterinary Feed Directive Fact Sheet for 4-H Youth Livestock Producers and Families posted at News from the Fair Office Market Steer/Market Heifer Information Market Steer/Market Heifer forms along with a DNA envelope are due Monday, January 2nd by 5:00 p.m. The drop box will be checked promptly at 5:00 p.m. The mandatory weigh-in for the market steers and market heifers is on Saturday, January 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the goat barn. Swine Committee There will be a Swine Committee Meeting on Thursday, January 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Secretary s Office at the Miami County Fairgrounds. Everyone is Welcome - parents, 4-H club advisors. Bring ideas and comments. OSF Market Beef Identification DNA hair samples required. All market beef must have Electronic Identification (EID) tags provided by the Ohio State Fair. The deadline to submit DNA samples in kits provided is January 15. Youth still must enter market beef by June 20 (postmark). Bi-State Youth Poultry Clinic The Bi-State Youth Poultry Clinic will be held on Saturday, March 25, at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster.
