6 bulletinboard Mark Haygood Wins Award in NJHA Fed Steer Shootout Contest Mark Haygood of Canadian, Texas, consigned the Champion Commercial Individual S teer, group two, in the 2018 NJHA Fed Steer Shootout. Pictured (l to r) are: Austin Matheny, 2018 NJHA Chairman; Ashley Fitzsimmons, BioZyme Inc.; Mark Haygood; Jessie Judge, BioZyme Inc.; Abbygail Pitstick, 2018 National Hereford Queen; and Trey Befort, AHA director of commercial programs. In its second year, the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) Fed Steer Shootout presented 19 awards to 15 Hereford youth. We are excited to award these Hereford youth who participated in the 2018 NJHA Fed Steer Shootout, says Trey Befort, AHA director of commercial programs. The program doubled in size in its second year, and we expect the program to continue to grow and give junior members an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Growing involvement in programs such as the Fed Steer Shootout is a great testament to the energy around the Hereford breed in the commercial industry, as well as the investment being made to advance youth programs. This year, 37 youth from 13 states entered 149 steers in the Fed Steer Shootout program. Contestants have the opportunity to collect actual feed yard performance and carcass merit data during the contest, ultimately learning about the importance of ultrasound technology, genetics and health. All steers were fed at Gregory Feedlots in Tabor, Iowa in partnership with David Trowbridge and the Gregory Feedlots. BioZyme Inc. and the Hereford Re- 4 TEXAS HEREFORD January 2019 search Foundation sponsored $10,000 in cash awards and Anderson Bean Boot Company provided handcrafted boots for the winners. 8 tailgatetalk By Jack Chastain, Editor Here we are at the start of another year for Texas Hereford Association. It is amazing how fast the years seem to fly by proved to be a good year for Texas Hereford Association. Cattle prices were off from the record prices of 2015 but still held steady for most breeders. Our Hereford cattle continue to gain acceptability as more and more cattlemen realize what our breed has to offer. The Hereford cow is our rock of strength. We must build from this. Our bulls continue to make an impact with the number of calves they can sire as well as the pounds and quality they breed. As we strive to use sires with more muscle, REA and IMF EPD s; we will continue to increase market share of the bull trade. We must get more aggressive and effective in promoting our breed and our product. We must do a better job Offering Horn and Poll Hereford Bulls Jordan Cattle Auction Bull Consignment Sale Sale starts at 10 a.m. (CST) 1310 W. I would like to congratulate Mark Haygood of Indian Mound Ranch of Canadian for winning Champion Individual Steer in group 2 of the 2018 NJHA Fed Steer Shootout with a home raised steer. I encourage more Texas juniors to participate in this program. I thank BioZyme, Inc. for their sponsorship. This issue is full of activities and opportunities for Hereford breeders and enthusiasts. Your staff and executive committee have planned a few new activities for the upcoming year. We will be back at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden for our annual meeting. Our fiftieth annual whiteface replacement female sale and Cowtown Invitational sale have excellent offerings. We plan to provide scholarships for four youth who are selected as high placing juniors at the National show in Fort Worth and will provide scholarships in San Antonio to the top three placing juniors at their open show. We need your presence and participation for these events to be successful. Our executive committee solicits your input on activities that would make you more proud to be a member of this organization. If you want to contribute time and ideas, contact myself, President Curtis Younts, president-elect Terri Barber, any member of the executive committee, or this years nominating committee. Your help, ideas and contributions are most appreciated. We need more participation from more members. Specifically, we need your attendance at Hereford events. Success is generally measured by size of the crowd. Next, we need more participation in advertising in our publication. More ads allow us more editorial and both will enhance a Hereford presence in Texas. We put our magazine on our website when we send it to the printer. Our goal is to provide you as members an affordable means to promote your cattle. Our For Sale section has proven to be very successful in helping members sell cattle as well as buyers find cattle. We have been posting announcements and results on Facebook. We have ALMOST 4000 persons following us on Facebook and have reached over 10,000 contacts with our postings. I extend a plea to all members who do not have a business card ad in the magacontinued on page 32 6 TEXAS HEREFORD January 2019

30 honorarymembers George Wilson Scaling II of Henrietta, Texas, is the owner of Scaling & Co. and operates the Scaling Ranch in Clay County, the ranch was started by Wilson s great, great grandfather, Samuel Scaling. Samuel Scaling migrated from England in 1850 and with two partners established the first packing plant west of the Mississippi River, in St. Louis. Samuel also established an operated commission companies in St. Louis and Kansas City and he founded the Livestock Exchange and served as its president. Samuel Scaling began traveling to Texas in search of land and cattle and bought his first ranch in Hill County, Texas, near Hubbard City. That ranch was managed by Samuel and his son, George A. Scaling, Wilson s great grandfather. In 1891, Samuel Scaling bought his first land in Clay County, north of Bellevue, Texas. He moved his herd of Durham cattle to the Clay County ranch and established the Scaling Ranch brand, Lazy B [ ]. Samuel purchased Hereford bulls to breed his herd of Durham cows and the Scaling Ranch has been using Hereford bulls ever since. The ranch was later operated by Wilson s grandfather George W. Scaling and then Wilson s dad, Harry Scaling and his uncle, Burford. Wilson lives on the ranch, with his wife Ann, in the home where he grew up. Over the years the Scaling Family bought Hereford bulls from Dudley Brothers, Lee Hudgins, Indian Mound Ranch, Bryant Edwards, Jim White, Lone Star Ranch, Ryan Bullinger, and earlier at the local Clay County Hereford Bull sale then held annually in the old WPA built rock barn in Henrietta. Wilson has spent his life working in and promoting agriculture. During the Regan Administration he served as Chief of the Soil Conservation Service. Later he served 16 years as a County Commissioner in his home county of Clay. He has been a director of J-A-C Electric Cooperative, Little Wichita Soil and Water Conservation District, The Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (currently an Honorary Director), North Texas Rehabilitation Center Board, and its foundation, as Chairman and member of the Clay County Pioneer Association Nine- Man Board (twice), and as President of the Clay County Pioneer Association in He currently serves as a director of the Red River Authority of Texas during which time he also represented agriculture on the Texas Water Conservation Advisory Council and he is Director of the Region B Water Planning Group. Wilson is also a di- B rector of the Kirk Edwards Foundation. Wilson attended and graduated from Henrietta High School and Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University). He is a member of the Henrietta Trinity Episcopal Church. In 2012 Wilson was named a Texas Trailblazer by the Original Wilson Scaling II Texas Ranch Roundup in Wichita Falls as An outstanding Rancher, who over a lifetime has shown in word and deed that he has earned the respect of the Cattle Industry. In 2014 he was named Individual of the Year by the Clay County Chamber of Commerce and in 2017, he was recognized with the President s Award for Outstanding contributions and continuous support by the Texas Soil and water Conservation Districts. Ask Wilson where he s from and he will say Clay County. Cattle Company is located in the Texas panhandle in Miami. B&C Eighty miles northeast of Amarillo, Miami is the county seat and the only town in Roberts County. In 1955 when Bill was a freshman in high school, he purchased two registered Hereford heifers from John B. Talley, a local registered Hereford breeder, with the money he received from selling a 4-H show steer. These heifers were of Blanchard Return by Anxiety Fourth breeding and are the basis for the cow herd that exists today. After Bill finished high school, Texas A&M University Veterinary College and the U.S. Army, Dr. Jim Bill Caldwell, a brother to Bill s mother Mildred, bought half-interest in Bill s herd and a new name of Breeding and Caldwell was introduced to the Hereford business. In the fall of 1970 a Hereford bull Mill Iron Silver B36 of Bridwell Hereford Ranch breeding, was purchased from Clark Mathers, a reputation commercial Hereford breeder 28 TEXAS HEREFORD January 2019

In 1974, B36 was one of the very first bulls in the breed to be named a Feed Lot and Carcass Register of Merit Sire and in 1975 was recognized as a Show Ring Register of Merit Sire, making him one of the very first bulls in the breed to accomplish both of these feats. HH Advance C316 (1963) Bill Breeding was the first L1 bull that Breeding and Caldwell used and Les Holden told Bill that 316 s gain index of 156 was the highest in Montana for a Hereford bull. In 1976, Dale Barber of Channing and Bill went to see Jim Fiedler of Stanford, Montana, a long-time customer of Les Holden and L1 cattle, and came home with three bulls, an 8-year-old HH Advance 803; a 10-year-old WCR L1 Domino 6313 (Clown) and the most famous a 9-yearold HH Advance C756 (Hatchet). In early 1965, while Bill was still in the Army, stationed in the Chicago area, he met Edie McFadden from Harvard, IL and married her in August They have two children, Chad of Miami, Texas and Christie who now lives in Hereford, Texas. Chad has five children, Austin, Blayke, Lillian, Wyatt and Blair. Christie and husband Steve Sims also have two children, Clara and Will. In 1977, Dr. Caldwell sold his half of the cows back to Bill and the name was changed to B&C Cattle Company (Bill and Chad Cattle Co., Chad was 7 years old at that time). Today Bill and Chad run 200 registered Hereford cows and 125 commercial cows on 8,700 acres of owned and leased native grass (no irrigation). They sell registered Hereford bulls and 70 registered Hereford females annually by private treaty and a few select consignment sales. Although we show cattle each year and do it very competitively, 95% of the cattle we sell are pasture raised and fed very little supplement. They are cattle that can turn grass into beef! Some of our best customers have commented that our bulls are tough country bulls ready to work bred and raised for beef. J.D. Schmidt of Hondo, Texas was born May 14, He is a third generation Hereford breeder currently running 160 head of registered horned Hereford cows. J.D. attended Biry school for 8 years. He graduated from Devine High school in He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Education from Southwest Texas State University in J.D. married Linda Haynes from Round Mountain, TX in They took residence in Hondo where J.D. ranched and taught Agriculture. Linda and J.D. celebrated the birth of their first son, Robert, in 1970 and their second son, Larry, in In 1980, J.D. began work for a crop insurance company as an adjuster and supervisor across South Texas and the Coastal Bend. All the J.D. Schmidt while, he continued farming, raising registered Hereford cattle, and planting improved grasses for ranchers in Medina and surrounding counties. J.D. and his father, O.K. Schmidt, Sr., bought their first registered cows in 1957, and over the years strived to raise quality registered stock that were acclimated to the south Texas environment. A good portion of the original seedstock and bloodlines came from Hill Country breeders like Harold Henke and Jack Ebeling. Today, all of the female cattle are bred and raised on the ranch and can be traced back 30 and 40 years to original Hill Country bloodlines. Herd bulls over the years have all come from reputable in-state breeders, private treaty purchases or production sales like the Greater Hill Country Hereford sale in Fredericksburg. Over the years, cattle have been sold to breeders in Mexico, local cattlemen in the Medina and surrounding counties, and for the past 22 years, through the South Texas Hereford Association Sale in Beeville. He resides in Hondo with his son, Robert, who after 20 years in the crop insurance business, keeps the ranch running smoothly. Larry, his wife Jana and 12-yearold son Barret, reside at Linda s former homestead and ranch in Round Mountain. Larry teaches school in the Hill Country and assists with ranch operations between school hours. Throughout his career in the registered Hereford business, J.D. has made countless friends. He is a member of the American Hereford Association, Texas Hereford Association and the South Texas Hereford Association. He has enjoyed sharing quality time with family, including vacation excursions, stock shows, church, community gatherings, and fishing and hunting on the Schmidt Hereford Ranch. J.D. believes that Herefords can be added to any program to improve the quality and grades of cattle to meet the current and future demands of the beef industry. boosterofthe YEAR When my daughters, Brandi Murphree, Roxi Pinkerton, and myself were introduced to the Hereford organization some 30 odd years ago I knew I d want to always be a part of the Hereford family. I grew up on a working ranch in SE Oklahoma where we raised cattle, grain, hay, rice, and pecans. I was involved in 4H as well as church and community projects. I attended Texarkana Jr College, now part of Texas A&M and was Miss Texarkana College. I am an author of The Texas Ranger Cookbook (lawmen) and others. Currently, my brother Dennis, wife Glenda and myself are heavily involved in the pecan industry. My Dad showed Hereford s in high school and my grandmother, a school teacher, raised Hereford s that much to her chagrin occasionally got mixed up with my grandfathers registered black cattle, so she also had a few Baldies every year. She would have been proud that I served at one time as your Texas Auxiliary President. My mother Pauline, who will be 81 years old very soon still runs 350 head of mother cows and can work circles around most cowhands. Hereford bulls are an integral part of her breeding program which has been a great success. I have 4 young grandchildren Zeb and Jace Murphree and Kara and Reese Pinkerton Cheryl Harris friendoftha whom I hope will grow to love this wholesome organization as much as I do. Educating our children is very important to me. I m involved in several organizations that provide scholarships to our young people. I believe in giving back to the community and I am truly blessed with the opportunities I have been given. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful organization and for this honor. Gary and Kathy Buchholz, GKB Cattle Family roots run deep at GKB Cattle in Waxahachie, Texas. Everyone is treated like family when they drive down the lane. Cow families are also important. Gary and Kathy Buchholz both have a cattle background and feel that it is important to honor the cow families that have built their herd through the years. We truly believe in cow families here and probably have more 10- to 12-year-old cows in our embryo program than we do younger cows, Gary says. If they can do their job at that age, they are worth having around. When the Buchholzes select replacements in the Hereford herd, longevity is very important. Heifers are selected on individual phenotype, but genotype plays a big part in making sure they are the keeping kind also. The Buchholzes run about 180 cows on their ranch just south of Dallas. That consists of 115 Registered Herefords, 60 recipient cows carrying embryos from their elite cows, and a handful of Shorthorn cows they have left after selling most of the rest of that breed. Gary s beginning in the cattle business was when he was in high school. While he wanted to buy a show heifer, his dad thought it would be a better idea for him to get a bank loan to purchase 25 Angus cows. While it wasn t what I wanted to do at the time, I now realize it was the right thing because I learned so much about raising cattle from that experience, he says. Gary s family moved to Texas from Illinois when he was 2 years old, as business brought them to the area. His father managed a grain elevator at the time. His family continues to have a grain elevator and feed business, along with some farm January 2019 TEXAS HEREFORD 31

He helped grow the Agriculture Education Department and FFA Program. Kathy grew up in West Texas, where her father ran a Hereford ranch near Midland. She is a fourth generation Hereford breeder, growing up in 4-H and FFA programs, and holds a master s degree in Land Economics. Kathy s mother was also involved in the Hereford operation and is known as the first National Intercollegiate Rodeo All-Around Cowgirl Champion in While Kathy was growing up, her mother was very involved with Hereford activities as well. The two met while attending the Fort Worth Stock Show in the late 1970s and later married in They have served as advisors to several different youth groups and are always willing to help juniors with their projects and activities. Gary and Kathy currently serve as National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) advisors. We truly believe in the junior program. It teaches kids so much about values, work ethic and decision making, which is so important, says Kathy. Not only did Gary and Kathy both grow up in the junior programs, but they have watched their families go through the process as well. Their nieces and nephew have shown for several years and continue the family s success. Pasture management is important at GKB, as summers can often be dry. Therefore, they keep a watchful eye on their grass and what needs to be done to improve the pastures. Their winter pasture improvement includes the planting of endophyte-free fescue grass. It s a very hearty grass and withstands a lot of abuse, while still providing good nutrition for our cows, says Gary. Other grasses have been interseeded, as well, to extend longevity of the grasses in their pastures. These improvements have helped them go from the need of four acres per cow to the need of only one acre per cow. Hay ground provides all the hay GKB cattle uses each year for feeding cattle through the winter months. Most of the hay baled on their ground is fed each year. High cane grasses are planted in some hay fields. These grasses are high yielding up to 10 bales per acre and are very highly palatable. Besides being fed high-quality hay, cows are fed a 20% protein cube throughout the year. Kathy says by feeding cows once or twice per week, it makes them easier to move between pastures and easier to round up when working them. Cattle are provided with a 27% protein tub and high-quality minerals all year. About 60-70% of the heifers sold go to a junior exhibitor. These show heifer prospects are sold at various consignment sales and, last year, GKB hosted its first Internet heifer sale in April. It takes a lot of effort to do well in the showring, but if a junior is willing to make the commitment, they can become successful, says Gary. If a junior raises their cattle our way, then we will help them with management, including ensuring they calve unassisted the first time. The Buchholzes hope their guidance will help juniors be in the black within three years of purchasing their project. They allow customers to bring back progeny to be sold in their sales. Those animals carry the GKB prefix along with the kid s prefix. Exhibiting cattle at fairs and shows across the nation has been an excellent marketing tool for GKB. However, they realize that cattle must be able to perform outside the showring. A heifer can be a show heifer but, ultimately, they have to be a cow, says Gary. You can collect all the blue ribbons possible, but if an animal can t produce, they aren t worth having around. GKB-bred cattle have won at national, regional, state and county levels. The success has helped GKB continue to market high quality cattle to juniors across the country. Herd bulls, including the most recent herd bull, GKB Downtown, have been shown as well, but then are turned out on cows to prove themselves. Every cattleman wants a good dog, a good wife and a good bull. I have been fortunate to have all of those and more, says Gary. tailgatetalk continued from page 6 zine to place one this year. 38 auxiliarynews by Lauren Echols Decker Texas Hereford Auxiliary President Thank you for allowing me to serve in the role as President of the Texas Hereford Auxiliary. Many of my first memories are of the Texas Hereford Meetings in Fort Worth. From the Worthington Hotel escalators to Loyd Whitehead selling chips on the bull board, there are so many memories of family friends here in Cowtown. In the past, our auxiliary meeting has featured fashion shows and Western artists as well as entrepreneurs and award-winning chefs. It has been an honor to bring women with gumption in to speak with our group and I hope that as my daughter grows up, she ll cherish such memories as well. As I leave this post, there are things I wish I had gotten accomplished, but as I enter this new stage of life, I am learning to give myself some grace for the things I can t do and cherish the things I say yes to. I am leaving this organization with so much potential for the future and I know that it will continue to grow and flourish in this new era. Thank you to the ladies who served before me and the ones who will come after me. I am grateful to come from a long line of Hereford women and am proud to be raising one who will undoubtedly grow up with fond memories of this place and Texas Hereford Auxiliary 2019 Annual Meeting February 2, 2019 Redbud Hall of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden 1:00 p.m. Please join us for our annual meeting, membership drive and election of new officers. We will have a special program designed with the ladies in mind. Please bring a prospective new member or guest. the people who join us each year for the meetings in Fort Worth. Blessings to you all and thank you for this immense honor. I hope I did you proud! 36 TEXAS HEREFORD January 2019
