4 Located in the hills of southwest Iowa Judy Loonan Dick Loonan Rick Thompson, Herdsman Phone: (641) Holly Avenue Corning, IA Fax: (641) Welcome to the start of our 36th Annual Production Sale season. That s a long time when one considers that the average life of a seedstock operation is believed to be ve to seven years! One of the factors in our longevity is in the fact that we learned early on to listen to the suggestions of the buyers. At that rst sale in 1974, Charles Lundquist bought two halfblood Simmental bulls sired by the A.I. bull, Lacombe Banditt. The next spring, Charles called and said, You better come look at my calves. They are good but these Banditt-sired calves are so fast that if you don t tag them before they dry off, you can t catch them! That was our last crop of calves from Banditt as we listened to Charles. At that rst sale, Charles son David was 10 years old and sat alone, high in the bleachers at the old Corning Sale Barn. David did his own bidding to Charles surprise and bought a $300 heifer calf. Charles and David now have a spring and a fall herd and still use Loonan bulls. And, if you do the math, I guess that makes David 46 years old this year. Our program is based on a long, time-proven business model, i.e. Determine a product that the buyer wants and needs, then work backwards to develop a plan to deliver that product. We were commercial producers who couldn t nd the genetics we needed for the times. Realizing that many were having the same problem, we set out to ll the need. The Loonan sale offers the buyers a distinct advantage over buying at a consignment sale or a co-mingled sale with cooperator herds where there is no de ned program or predictable results. For those not familiar with the Loonan program, the past 36 years we have developed a simple, consistent plan based on buyer recommendations and it applies to all three sire groups. Calving Ease: We have a goal of unassisted births with aboveaverage calving-ease EPDs and lighter-than-breed-average birth weight in all three sire lines because many of our buyers can t be there full-time during calving. Growth: As much growth as possible without calving problems. With today s data, this is possible. Judy Loonan Dick Loonan Rick Thompson 2 Quality: Listen to the buyer and what he wants. Loonan cattle have a reputation for extra length and thickness. When it comes to sire selection and replacement heifer selection, Rick and Judy are the experts. Rick had a 4-H background and years of cattle feeding, plus sale barn experience as an auctioneer, ring man and order buyer in Nebraska prior to coming here 16 years ago. Judy grew up in the business, plus has 25 years in the center ring with the judges as the of cial clerk of the Iowa State Fair 4-H beef show. Carcass: Genetics based on today s market economics. Disposition: Always!! Loonan cattle have a long-standing docile reputation. We want to give credit to the many long-time friends who started out as customers and are now our best friends and who have helped us develop today s Loonan Genetics program. This 2011 sale really puts it all together with the goals of the past 36 years. Today, data is so helpful, it is possible to pretty much hit the desired target. But the target keeps moving and we need a moderate, middle-of-the-road program that can adjust to change in either direction and avoid extremes. The bottom line the success of Loonan Stock Farm can only be measured through the success of our customers. Welcome to our 36th Annual Sale and we thank you for this opportunity to share our genetic program with you. Please let us know if you have any questions or how we may help you. Judy, Rick and Dick

5 Care and Management of Yearling Bulls We occasionally receive questions regarding the proper care and management of yearling bulls. The following suggestions came from other seedstock producers and extension beef specialists: 1. Yearling bulls coming off test need to be in good condition in order to withstand the expected lbs. weight loss during breeding season. Between the test period and start of breeding season, 8-13 lbs. of grain plus good quality hay or pasture is suggested. 2. During breeding season, young bulls are still growing in addition to their breeding duties. Semen production takes 60 days and poor pasture or inadequate nutrition can severely affect libido, semen quality and quantity. 3. A maximum 60-day breeding season is suggested for yearling bulls, or rotation, to allow them time to rest. 4. Following the 60-day breeding season, proper nutrition can pay big dividends in future development and usefulness of the young bull. This is a very critical age as they start losing their teeth at months of age and cannot utilize roughage as well as with permanent teeth. Research indicates that a bull s usefulness as a two-yearold can be retarded if not properly reconditioned after use as a yearling. Feeding lbs. of grain (depending on condition) until the bull is two years old, will help recover the lost weight and provide the nutrition needed for continued growth. 5. Annual deworming and treating for lice when needed helps reduce stress and improves feed ef ciency. These guidelines were developed by beef specialist to help maximize the bene ts of superior genetics. Health Bulls and heifers were vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian as calves, including 7-Way, Blackleg, Hemophilus, BRSV, IBR, BVD, pasteurella and dewormed. Heifers were calfhood vaccinated for brucellosis. Registration On registered females, please give your name, address and association number to the clerk and the seller will transfer at no cost to the buyer. Unregistered females were priced without papers to keep the cost down for the buyer. If registration is desired on unregistered animals that are eligible for registry, seller will handle the paper work with the buyer to pay $20 per head. On bulls, seller will pay this cost if you desire registration papers. Please notify the clerk. Sale Procedure All cattle are priced in the catalog at affordable prices. No cattle are sold or reserved prior to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 5, Selling Procedure Cattle are ready for inspection now. All are affordably priced in the catalog. Please register as you arrive February 5th. Sale order will be determined by the buyer in order of registration.
