Ashley Baker, the Colorado Youth Representative, has informed the state association that she is going to be heading for college the 1 st of August and will only be available for shows up to that time and the shows that are later she will attempt to attend if possible. If anyone or if anyone knows of a youth between the ages of that would like to be the youth representative, they should contact a state officer. The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo has again asked the Colorado Draft Horse Association to participate next year. If there is anyone that would like to participate by bringing horses please let a state officer know. HER ADDRESS IS 4620 COUNTY ROAD 100, FLORISSANT, CO CALL FOR DIRECTIONS Summer 2011 Draft Shows in Review This season was supposed to begin over Memorial Day week-end with Mardi Anson s show in Craig, but everyone knows, the Herpes scare was front page news and on every TV newscast and County Fair Boards were quarantining most facilities, throwing doubts on several upcoming shows. Most of the concern ebbed as the expansion of the outbreak was quickly stemmed by quick action by several groups. We will have more on Mardi s show as we report the shows in chronological order and possible have the placings on some shows, if space permits. The NE Show The Jne 19 th, NE Show moved to a new town and venue, third move in recent times from Brush to Akron and now to Sterling, at the Fair Grounds which, is certainly an excellent facility. Lots of traditional farm classes with good support but like other shows, short on large hitches, with Jack Taylor being the only Show Team. The venerable Don Carmichael handled the Arena. Staring with the Obstacle Course and what a course, the first entrant took fifteen minutes to navigate and the winner took nine minutes, with eleven teams, that makes for a long class. The teamster had to hitch and unhitch from a manure spreader pulled by a forecart without any assistance. It was a creative and challenging, put together by Steve Franks. Nice crowd, good show all the way round, the NE Chapter knows how to do it well. Sheila Grange served as Judge and Joanne Conter on the microphone. The Rifle Show July 2 nd, brought an old show with a new date. The Rifle Show has been historically held Labor Day w/e which, in recent years, has put it just one day after the State Fair in Pueblo, making it difficult for some to make both shows. We personally, were not able to attend but will rely on a brief note from Michele Somono on the
Page 3 of 8 FALL 2011 show and I will add the results in the Newsletter, again if space permits. Attached are the Rifle Show results if you need them. They are also posted on our webpage: We had a good turnout for a holiday weekend and considering the date change of our show. Exhibitors came from the front range, Montana, Grand Junction and Craig Some of the pictures are posted on Megan Hamilton Photography facebook page. Barry Costangnazo (ck sp) was the Judge for the Show organized by Kim Murchison and the Western Driving Chapter. Many will remember Megan as a CDHA Youth Rep several years ago. The Arapahoe Show Anytime you schedule a show for late July, you know it is going to be hot and the 24 th was no exception for the Southern Chapter Show at the Arapahoe County Fair in Aurora. But hot beats rain and there was none of that to mar the event. Entries were down a little, particularly the Show Teams, thank heavens for Jack Taylor and his Percheron show team, his presence was appreciated. The Farm Team classes went well with Bud Walsh serving as a Judge, and the previously mentioned Mr. Carmichael serving as Ring Man, a responsibility handed him right before the show. Also Cody Kuehl a last minute fill in on the microphone just six days before his wedding. Because of lack of Hitch entries, we were able to pay each team appearance money in addition to the prize monies, so everyone came away with something. The Weld County Show Jack Taylor was organizer and contestant in this show with the help of Audrey Stockton taking care of the administrative side of the event. If you thought the previous show was hot, it was nothing compared the heat in Greeley, July 31 st. Angela Walsh served as Judge, her first time for draft horses, but she had judged mule shows before. Dad watched from the veranda of announcers stand with a big, proud smile on his face. Tommy Ferriter repeating as Ring Stewart kept the show moving smoothly and outstanding announcer, Paul Gingerich kept the crowd informed.. A few more Show Teams than earlier shows and the only front range show that includes a four abreast class. Lots of support from members of the Northern Chapter in the volunteer corps, always a hallmark of that chapter s shows. Larimer County Show How can you not like a Draft Show that is held in an air conditioned arena, with good seating, unless you re a photographer shooting in available light which isn t very available in that building, but that is a personal problem. It is also not the most spacious arena for some Farm Team timed events, in fact, it is probably the smallest of all the summer shows, but remember the A/C, that makes up a myriad of shortcomings. Audrey Stockton chaired this event with her usual flair for good organization. Matt Carmichael, it runs in the family, handled the arena with Dad getting entries from the parking lot/harnessing area to show area, which since a very busy street has to be crossed, is not easy. This show got the best turn out of Hitches with Speichers and Messengers bringing their Percheron six ups along with a couple
Page 4 of 8 FALL 2011 additional four ups adding to the Performance side of the show. Also there was a good turn out for the cart classes. Shellie Manning from Washington State, who along with her husband, raise Clydes. Bud Walsh, who s voice is three octives lower than everyone elses, kept the audience, which was good sized, well informed. Many in attendance got to visit with Dennis Speicher who dropped by for a rare visist. Most of you know Dennis has faced some health issues of late that have restricted his horse activities but he was able to watch much of the show and see his Son, Doug and Granddaughter Heather do their stuff. The Moffat County Show Mardi Anson sent a review of the August 7 th, Show, which you may remember was postponed from Memorial Day w/e. Paul, Our Draft Horse show was on Sunday Aug 7th. We had some truck trouble so there were 2 teams from Rifle that didn't show up. But we had 7 teams there. 2 from Rifle, 1 from Collbran and the rest from Moffat County, Craig. area. Vern Anderson was our judge again this year and did a Great Job! We did a lot of youth and novice events and a youth feed team race because of being in conjunction to the Moffat County Fair. I think we drew a bigger crowd this year because there was a open horse show the day before and the 4H horse show the day after. Along with the youth and novice events we had a special class of antique horse drawn equipment. We had a old manure spreader, a grader, and a old 4 person cart. The Manure spreader was donated by our own Wyman Museum. I think it went well and everyone had a great time. I will send pictures when I get them down loaded this week. Let me know if you need them ASAP. We are planning to have our regular scheduled Draft horse show next year Memorial day weekend. I will send you information as it gets closer. Mardi Anson O-Ya, We have a name now! "Moffat County Horse Power Draft Horse and Mule show" The Estes Park Show In just two years, Ginny Hutchison has built the Estes Park Draft Horse Show into one of the finest, if not the best, of all of our State Shows. By assembling some good people like Bud Walsh, Gary Dunning, Don Carmichael, Tommy Feririter, Paul Gingerich from the CDHA and a goodly number of local volunteers and with community support, she has put together a fine production. Add to that, a great facility, spectacular scenery and a good spectator turn out, all the ingredients necessary for a successful show. The weather was a little threatening, few lightening strikes in the distance, but sunshine prevailed for most of the day. Walter Shaefer, Sr., of S. Dakota, and by the way, brother of Phil Shaefer, Southern Chapter member currently living
Page 5 of 8 FALL 2011 in Wasila, Alaska. Mr. Shaefer was a frequent exhibitor at the NWSS. Again, traditional Farm and Performance classes with order of the day, two sixups, Dennis Kuehl and Doug Speicher, with the latter taking the honors. Ten farms teams were involved in those classes with Greg Kearns of Elizabeth, garnering the most blue ribbons. Good to see Jeff Sparks back out again in the arena, he had a bad year losing two horses this past season. One factor in the success of this show is the strong community interest in horses in general, horse activities of all kinds. The Stanley Park hosts horse events like rodeos, hunters & jumpers, dressage, reining, all kinds of horse disciplines, and the addition of a Draft Show, a long time dream of Ginny, just reinforces the importance of horses in the Estes Park area. As a side bar, Tess Junkins, celebrated her 17 th birthday during the show. Anyone who has been around the show circuit, has watched this very talented and beautiful young lady grow up. She has been a frequent winner in Showmanship and driving classes for Juniors, up to and including the NWSS. The Colorado State Fair The State Fair Draft Show wraps up the season for most, if not all area shows, unless you are willing to travel to Montana, Idaho or attend a show in Arizona in November. It is always good for the State Fair Show when it doesn t storm in the afternoon and this year it got cloudy and, yes, it was record setting heat, but not showers were not to be had. The entire show is under cover which makes the arena a very comfortable setting. It was good to see Mike Gustafson from Blanco, NM, bring his Belgian Mare Hitch to the show after facing serious health issues this summer that included an induced coma for 30 days. He had two youngsters handle the hitches in the arena since he was not quite up to driving yet. The Farm Team Classes were down a couple of entries this year but were still represented very well with most of the regulars, Greg Kearns, winning his 3 rd All Round Award for farm teams, closely followed by Gary Reiber, Jeff Sparks and even Dennis Marsh made it down from Ft. Collins. The hitches included the Flintstone Gravel with Ted Pratt and family, Todd Horning from Alamosa, and Mike Gustafson, still seems hard to get large hitches to come to this show. Years ago, 5 or 6 hitches made this show, but that is ground we have covered before. Lindsay Wadhams has done a marvelous job building in the entire Horse Show back up after years of neglect. The judge was Corey Robinson, late of the Budweiser Clyde program, he opted not to go to New Hampshire with the training cadry. Don Carmichael ran the show with yours truly on the PA. The Drafts did alternate with the Mule classes and the mules did participate in the Feed Team
Page 6 of 8 FALL 2011 Race and shared the Obstacle and Log Skidding courses with the Drafts. We have mentioned before, without pontificating, the lack of good stalling and parking arrangements at the Fair that influences some exhibitors and it is not a situation that looks solvable in the near future, since, like the NWSS, there is little room for expansion of the existing facility. Kudos to Janet Rhatigan for bringing CDHA sales items to each show.
