4 WELCOME TO THE 8th ANNUAL ULRICH HEREFORD RANCH BULL SALE! Peter Ulrich Cell: Hans & Annette Ulrich PH: Once again, February has rolled around and it s time to invite you to join us at Balog Auction in Lethbridge on Tuesday, February 25th! Join us for lunch and check out the bulls before the sale. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. in plenty of time before our 8th annual Bull & Female Sale gets underway at 1:00 p.m. MST. Spring 2013 was a cool one here, which meant the grass was slow in coming and there was less hay to bale, but the farmers around had bumper crops so congratulations to them! We can t complain as the cattle prices were very strong and we hope they continue for years to come. We are also pleased to be able to participate in the Canadian Hereford Association s Feed Efficiency trial in which they are testing 900 bulls over the course of 3 years at Olds College, Olds AB and Cattleland at Strathmore, AB. The goal is to determine the amount of feed actually consumed using GrowSafe bunks and compare with the gain to determine those that can gain the most on the least amount of feed. The results are only preliminary but our cattle are looking very promising and it s exciting to be involved. The end goal is an EPD that can be used to select more feed efficient cattle, thus enabling all cattlemen to reduce feed costs. This year s sale has 10 hand-picked bred heifers for sale. They are products of our Specializing in Light Birthweights with Great Performance, plus Remarkable Cows program, and we are confident they will continue to work well in your herd also. 39 two-year-olds and 6 excellent long yearlings will take to the sale ring on Feb 25th. They grow up the natural way here on milk & grass! Our genetics speak for themselves without the use of creep feeders. The yearlings spend all summer on grass, and then in fall the bulls are fed a high roughage diet consisting of hay, barley silage and Landmark Feed s Bull s Eye backgrounding pellets, designed for growing animals. We have chosen to follow a non-medicated program so that what you see on sale day are solid genetic traits coming through in their growth. These youngsters are just grown out, not pushed, to ensure they re ready to work in the spring. All bulls are semen tested and those results along with scrotal measurements will be available on sale day. We faithfully report performance data and ultrasound scan at yearling and are pleased to be rated a 5- Star breeder by the CHA. Unfortunately, it seems that EPDs unfairly punish our use of some outstanding older sires. By crossing these working bulls from the old days with the improved genetics of today, we remain vigilant in our goals of producing quality animals. We certainly do appreciate the support & friendship of the buyers who have been coming over the years. We look forward to seeing you Sale Day! Sincerely, Peter Ulrich Hans & Annette Ulrich TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at Lethbridge, AB, on Sale Day. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are genetic predictions producers can use when making selection decisions. These values are available on performance animals from breed associations. It is important to understand you cannot compare EPDs between breeds, only within a breed. A buyer is always advised to use more than just the EPDs regardless of accuracy when making purchase decisions. An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the genetic merit of an animal using relevant performance and pedigree information. EPDs are expressed in the units of measure. For example, birth weight is expressed in pounds, and rib-eye area is expressed in square inches. EPDs come from performance data. Producers submit data on their cattle. From this data, researchers look at the differences between animals raised in the same environment (contemporary groups) and ascertain the portion of that difference that is due to genetics (heritability). Also included in this is how the different traits relate to each other and interact together (correlations). They can then directly compare genetic differences among animals using the pedigree information contained in the CHA and AHA registries. The result is a value that can be directly compared between animals and across environments, an EPD. EPD S USED IN THIS CATALOGUE Calving Ease EPD (CE) - calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted. Birth Weight EPD (BW) - is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birth weight EPDs usually indicates more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) - reflects progeny growth differences up to 205-days Yearling Weight EPD (YW) - reflects progeny growth differences through to 365-days. Milk EPD (Milk) - indicates the ability of a sire s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning. Total Maternal EPD (TM) - also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the Weaning Weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205-Days and combines the genetics for preweaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter s progeny. Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE) - represents the ease with which a sire s daughters will calve as first calf heifers, when compared to daughters of other sires. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing daughters with a higher probability of unassisted calving. Hereford Breed Averages EPDs for Spring 2014 CE BW WW YW MCE Milk TM (important to understand is that zero is not average ) COMPARABILITY OF EPDS EPDs from Hereford animals are directly comparable to other Herefords in North America and parts of South America, due to the inclusion of data from Canada, United States, Uruguay & Argentina. As well, it is important to remember that Hereford EPDs are NOT directly comparable to EPDs produced by different breeds, such as Angus or Simmental. Please Note!! Her 3 sons so far have averaged 81 lbs at birth and her daughter 78 lbs. 215Z himself had an 80 lb BW. WHY RAISE HEREFORDS? The data was analyzed by Dan Moser, associate professor of genetics at Kansas State University and Vern Pierce, professor of agricultural economics at University of Missouri. Here are the highlights: 600 Angus cows were randomly bred to 10 Hereford bulls. The resulting progeny was compared to the offspring from three proven Angus sires. The Hereford-sired calves were 3 lb. heavier than the Angus calves at birth. But averaging 72 lb., the weight was nearly ideal for commercial operations. At weaning, the Hereford-sired calves were 11.9 lb. heavier than the Angus-sired calves, despite the Angus sires ranking in the top 20% of their breed for weaning weight EPD. Heifer calves were bred with the baldies showing a 7% advantage in conception rates over the straight Angus heifers. Part of the steers were placed on feed efficiency test at a feedlot. The Hereford-sired calves outgained the Angus by.15 lb. per day. While both breed groups were similar for fat thickness (Angus = 0.52 vs. Hereford = 0.54), Hereford-sired steers had about 13 more lb. of carcass weight and about 3/4 of an inch more ribeye area. Pierce set up an economic model to measure the advantages of this data for a typical operation. He says the advantage of using Herefords will be multiplied over the 10-year model. In the model using Hereford bulls on Angus-based cows will add $514 net over 10 years or about $51 per year per cow. Economic models also predicted that if replacement females were retained over a period of 10 years, Hereford-sired females would generate a 20% advantage in herd size for the same relative cost versus the straight Angus commercial cows because of increased fertility and longevity. Pierce says, The bottom line is if a rancher with Angusbased cows uses Hereford bulls compared to using Angus bulls and gets the same response as we had in this study, he will have improved cash flow, increased herd size and more calves to sell over a 10-year period. 10
