WELCO ME To Steppler Farms Seventh Annual Bull Sale Welcome to Steppler Farms Charolais Bull Sale March 11th, We are proud to offer more bulls than ever before with 80 outstanding yearlings and 15 two-year olds. Videos will be available on all the bulls on our website stepplerfarms.com. DLMS will again live stream the bull sale. This year s sale on March 11th offers the largest selection of Sparrow Braxton 519C herd bulls and showcases Braxton s progeny. Braxton s first calf crop has more than exceeded our expectations and we believe Braxton represents the future of the Charolais breed! Braxton calves are born consistently and easily with the highest level of vigour, traits we value since we calve the majority of our 450 PB cows in January. As we watched these calves develop on pasture and in the feedlot, we were impressed with their ability to grow and consistently perform. Braxton has also passed down his calm and easy nature as well as his sound feet and hair. Make sure to inspect this exciting new sire group and see Braxton himself on display. He is an awesome herd bull. As our herd genetics continue to grow, customer service is always top of mind. Steppler Farms continues to offer our two programs Steppler Farms Breeding Warranty and Steppler Farms Herd Bull Guarantee. Steppler Farms Breeding Warranty is designed to protect your investment in a Steppler bull. All bulls sold through the March 11, 2018, bull sale are covered for injury and/or death for six months after the bull sale date with ZERO premium. If your 2018 sale bull gets injured or dies within this time period, simply phone and we will supply a bull to breed your cows. Steppler Farms Herd Bull Guarantee is a program developed to make sure the sale bull you purchase meets your requirements. Not all bulls work out as hoped and this program enables us to provide better customer service. Thank you to everyone for supporting our program. Every year we focus on genetic advancement and consistency and we select bulls for calving ease, vigour, growth/performance, and conformation. We feed our bulls for longevity as well, so we develop them on a high forage based ration. This year s bull pen offering fits the bill with bulls to meet your needs. The bull pen is always available for viewing prior to the bull sale. We are never too busy to show you our operation. Please accept this as your invitation to attend our 7th Annual bull sale on March 11th, ~ Andre Welcome to the 7th Annual Steppler Farms Bull Sale. The quality from top to bottom in the bull pen this year is very strong as you would expect when you are taking the top of the crop from their over 400 mother cows. This year we did the catalogue in sire groups to make it easier to see the consistency of type. This also allows those that want to put some ½ and ¾ brothers together for consistency in their calf crop, an easier way to do it. There are calving ease bulls that would work on any heifers to high performance bulls that will add big pay weight to any set of commercial calves. If you are a purebred breeder, you will also find bulls that will work in any program with some nice variations in proven pedigrees and a great set of calves by great breeding Sparrows Braxton. They have sourced the best bulls available to complement their cowherd and spared no expense in purchasing them. If you need two-year old bulls, the quality here is also strong. These aren t leftover bulls, but were held and developed slowly since weaning to be bulls that will go out, work and last. With over 40 years in the Charolais industry, they have worked hard as a family to build a great cowherd and a great reputation for supplying a quality product that they stand behind. They have been here for years and will be here for years to come, so they want to make you a satisfied customer with the most extensive guarantee in the business. The sale will be broadcast on DLMS for those of you from a distance and can t make it to the sale. They will work with you to get your bulls delivered to you as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you a bull that is right for your program. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By By Livestock cell

CALVING EASE RANK The majority of cattlemen s programs have changed in the past decade; with larger cattle herds and more calves born on grass, calving assists must be minimal. Calving ease has always been an important consideration in our breeding program, so we have included a calving ease score to help you select your next herd sires. We provide in the catalogue actual birthweights, and birthweight and calving ease EPDs. Before selecting your next sire, first evaluate your cow herd and breeding program and know the type of bulls that work for you. All bulls should sire calves with high levels of vigour at birth with the majority being born unassisted as long as the bulls are used on the recommended cow type. I should note that we run several different types and ages of females, so we have used bulls on all 4 levels of our calving ease score. By using our calving ease score, you get my best evaluation of a bull s calving ability, so we have included a calving ease ranking to help you select your next herd sires. Ask these questions when you evaluate your cow herd: What are my calving ease expectations and program goals? What does my cow herd look like? Breed, cow size, age of female, female genetics What are my management factors? Nutrition, exercise, time and interval of calving What are the outside influences? Weather My criteria when I determine a bull s calving ease score: Phenotype How the bull is made. Structural soundness for calving ease. Smooth shouldered, smaller head, degree of bone, balance. Gestation Days between conception and birth date. Maternal calving ease Pedigree How predictable and consistent has the pedigree been for calving. Ex. Inconsistency can come from a larger birthweight grandmother. Actual Birthweight and Calving Ease Each calf is weighed and a calving ease score given at time of birth. Environment Weather and nutrition of dam in the last 30 days of gestation. Calves birthweights and calving ease can be substantially different when comparing calves born the 1st of January to those born the 1st of March. Outside factors affecting the calf s actual data (Twin, placenta issues, dam injury etc.) CCA EPD Data CE Rank Scale 1 Recommended for heifers and cows 2 Recommended for second time calves and mature cows. 3 Recommended for smaller framed and larger mature cows. 4 Recommended for mature cows. 5 Bulls taken out None provided Calf born on grass, sired by a Steppler bull at E & G Farms, Miami, Manitoba Steppler Farms Ltd. 5 Seventh Annual Bull Sale

BULL MANAGEMENT Get your bull settled in Bulls can sometimes have difficulties settling into a new environment. Different feed, management practices and climate all contribute to new stressors for the bull. If you want your bull to reach his highest breeding potential, it is important to get him a few weeks prior to breeding to make this transition easier. If you don t have an extra pen or space, sometimes this just isn t a reality and a box stall in the old barn doesn t count as a pen for the bull. Evaluate breeding and re-evaluate his breeding soundness throughout the season With yearlings and virgin two-year olds, we need to make sure they can effectively breed a cow. Time and patience is essential! If your breeding season happens on grass, this evaluation becomes more difficult, but due diligence will aid in preventing lost time and open cows. Take the time to evaluate the bull throughout the breeding season. If you suspect an issue, contact me immediately. Back up bulls are always on hand. Pull your bull and provide proper nutrition accordingly The most important management practice for insuring your bulls next year service is to pull them from the cows. All bulls will perform better and recondition more efficiently if they are pulled and fed the proper nutrition to regain lost weight, grow and put on needed muscle for the following year. Work with your nutritionist to develop the right ration for your bulls. Having your younger bulls away from your mature bulls is also well worth the investment. Younger bulls can be built up more effectively and the mature bulls won t get over conditioned. Recheck semen and re-evaluate breeding soundness the following year Leading up to the next breeding season, it is important to recheck semen and the bull s ability to breed. Injuries and damage from our cold winters can greatly affect the bull s breeding potential. COPENHAGEN, our senior herdsire at Steppler Farms Steppler Farms Ltd. 6 Seventh Annual Bull Sale

REFERENCE SIRE SPARROWS BRAXTON 519C PMC SB 519C January CE 9.1 BW -3.9 WW 33 YW 80 M 30 TM 47 DBL PLD We bought Braxton because we believe he has the potential to take our cow herd to the next level. By teaming up with Beck Farms, Lang SK, we were able to purchase this breed leader who ended up as the highest selling bull in Canada that year. Braxton is the most impressive bull that we have ever had walking at Steppler Farms. Braxton is so fluid in his stride; he is quiet, deep chested, huge hipped, with perfect structure, and he comes from a tremendous cow. We calved over 100 females to Braxton in 2017 and will have that many again coming in The calving ease in this sire is second to none. The calves have a tremendous amount of vigour at birth and never look back. 1 TRUE BLOOD 249E PMC DSY 249E January BW 100 CE Rank 3 WW 817 /S CE 5.6 BW -.8 WW 47 YW 93 M 27 TM 50 Dam: MOYER S 27A SVY PILGRIM PLD 655S MOYER'S ASHLEY ANNE 27A GOLD-BAR SAVVY 226W(P) Steppler Farms Ltd. 7 Seventh Annual Bull Sale

We have a short, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred for efficiencies and calculated matings. We try to get 95% of the cows exposed in the first cycle with a 70-75% conception rate. Correct, accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heat detection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Once the cows go through the 28 day AI program, the herdbulls go to work. Since most of the cows have conceived already, the herdbulls finish the job. The mature bulls easily travel throughout the last 32 days of the breeding program. All females are pregnancy checked early in the summer and culls and opens are taken out. We maintain a high and rigorous herd health regime as outlined below. This enables us to have a successful breeding program and ensures potential buyers of the high health standards of these sale cattle.
