If your attempt is not successful, DO NOT contact the IRS. Print the confirmation, denial or error message and send a copy to our office. 4-H organizations that are authorized by the University of Maryland Extension to use the 4-H name and clover emblem are exempt from federal income tax. 4-H organizations which earned $50,000 or less are required to file an annual electronic notice an e- Postcard. GEN H Clubs & Affiliated 4-H Organizations earning more than $50,000 per year must continue to file 990 or 990EZ annually. April 27 Maryland Day and 4-H State Public Speaking May 1-Due to 4-H Office: Livestock Forms Includes all Market & Breeding Animals, Horse, Chickens and Rabbits Bred & Owned; County Bred Forms Breeding Animals/Horse leases 4-H Camp Algawa July 14 to 21 SEWING CLASS FOR BEGINNNERS January 7 to February 11, 2013 Sewing classes will be held each Monday from 4 to 6:00 p.m. in the Activities Building at the Constitution Park. There is a $5.00 registration fee to cover basic supplies. Instruction will include: Sewing machine basics Sewing supplies and tools Fabric types Measurements and cutting Supplies for the first project, a fleece scarf will be supplied. The remaining projects participants need to supply their own fabric, thread and notions. A supply list will be provided at the first class. Supplies to purchase will be minimal. FRIEND OF 4-H AWARD UPCOMING EVENTS The following events are scheduled at the Allegany County Fairgrounds: March 15 Public Speaking April 20 Achievement Night May 10 Fashion Revue Due to limited availability of the fairgrounds, Spring Tagging (8 a.m. to 12 Noon) and Achievement Night will both be held on April 20 (5:30 p.m.). We apologize for any inconvenience. The Friend of 4-H award is designed to recognize individuals, groups, businesses, governmental bodies and other institutions in the community who have worked hard to support the 4-H program and are not enrolled in 4-H. Please encourage your club to discuss this, vote, and submit a nomination of a friend that has helped 4-H throughout the year. All nominations are to be submitted no later than March 1, 2013 to the Extension Office. Applications are available at the office. 3 4-H RECORD BOOK FORMS Summary Record: Complete only one Summary Record for your current year in 4-H. Be sure to sign where indicated as 4-H Member. Your primary Club Leader needs to sign the summary record after reviewing the completeness and accuracy of the information included. Project Records: Each project must go on a separate project record. (See requirements to the right for livestock records.) To be classified as complete, each project record must be filled out completely: personal information, goals, communications/exhibits (2 are required), learning experiences (4 are required), financial records, life skills, and reflection. Records must be signed by the member and the primary club leader after reviewing for completeness and accuracy. If you choose to use plastic page covers, please do not use them for pages requiring signatures. Forms can be found here: LIVESTOCK PROJECT FORMS All market animals should be on the market animal project record. This includes market steers, feeder steers, market sheep, market goats, market hogs, market rabbits, and market chickens. Each species should be on a separate market animal project sheet, i.e. all market sheep should be on one market animal project record, all market steers should be on one market animal project record, etc. All breeding animals should be on the breeding animal project record. This includes breeding beef cattle, breeding dairy cattle, breeding sheep, breeding meat goats, breeding dairy goats, breeding hogs, and breeding rabbits. Each species should be on a separate breeding animal project sheet. However, if you have more than one breeding animal of the same species, they can go on the same record. Horses and fancy chickens will go on the regular 4-H Project Record. You can add the additional Vet/Farrier record to the horse project if you choose. You can find it here: HorseProjSheet.pdf PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Record Books, Awards, and Fair Eligibility: To receive a ribbon and certificate/seal: members must complete a record book with at least one completed project record inside. To receive project pins: projects must be complete and inside a complete record book. To meet fair eligibility to show livestock, members must complete a project record on each project exhibited at the 2012 fair to show at the 2013 fair. Records must be submitted in a folder with your name and primary club printed on the front.

4 MARYLAND 4-H HORSE ART CONTEST The seventh annual Maryland 4-H Horse Art Contest will take place this year during Maryland Horse World Expo on January 18-20, 2013 in Timonium, MD Entries must be received by no later than Wednesday, January 9, Entries will be judged before the first day of the expo and will be displayed throughout the expo. Members may also visit the Maryland 4-H Horse website at for contest information and rules. MARYLAND 4-H ANIMAL SCIENCE VOLUNTEER WEBINAR SERIES All new series of monthly webinars will be held January through May for Animal Science Project Leaders/Volunteers Dates and Topics are: January 29 Animal Science Program Updates February 26 Preparing for Competitive Events March 25 Animal Science Project Records April 30 Risk Management for Animal Projects/Activities May 28 Sportsmanship in Animal Projects Volunteers are requested to register for each session at: MID-ATLANTIC SMALL FLOCK POULTRY EXPO The 2013 Mid-Atlantic Small Flock Poultry Expo will be held on February 2, 2013 in Carroll County. The event is free to all 4-H youth and volunteers; however, they must preregister and show their 4-H membership card at the door. A local 4-H poultry club is providing food to purchase on site. It is full of information for everyone, even 4-H members! There are links to information and fact sheets from University of Maryland as well as other universities on various topics like dewormer resistance or mineral nutrition. There are recordings of trainings and webinars you can watch and learn at any time on topics like nutrition for pregnant ewes/does or foot health management. There are quick reference tables comparing information like antibiotics or internal parasites. AND there is a whole page with information and links devoted to 4-H/FFA youth with activities, online quizzes and games and more. There is also a great quarterly newsletter you can sign up to receive, Wild and Wooly; which covers everything from research study results, disease identification and treatment, upcoming events, recipes for sheep/goat meat, and so much other interesting information. 6 CANINE GOOD CITIZENS Members of the Paws N Pals 4-H club received the Canine Good Citizens Award. The event required participants to complete and pass 20 task tests with their dogs. It was held at the Frostburg Dog Park during Canine Good Citizen Days. 7 CLAY POT SNOWMAN CRAFT You will need: 2-inch Terra Cotta Clay Pot 1 1/2-inch Wooden Ball Head Orange Chenille Stem Small Buttons Twigs Paint Clear Acrylic Spray Craft Glue or Hot Glue Gun Paint Brush Scissors Instructions: Wipe down your terra cotta clay pot with a damp cloth and let dry completely. Paint the clay pot and the wooden ball head white. Put them aside to dry. Once the paint is dry, set your painted clay pot upside down on your work surface and glue the wooden ball onto the bottom of the clay pot. Paint a face on the wooden ball. Once all your paint is dry, spray it with the clear acrylic sealer. Cut off about 1/2 inch from the orange chenille stem and glue it on for the snowman's nose. Glue the two buttons onto the clay pot. For the arms, find two small twigs and glue them in place. Your snow person is now complete. Source: Chocolate Candy Hearts Ingredients: Source: Plastic heart-shaped candy mold Red, white and cocoa colored candy melts Sandwich bags (zipper, not pleated) Scissors Spoon Wax paper Plate Wooden skewer or clean craft paint brush Directions: 1. Put a handful of candy melts into an open zipper sandwich bag. 2. Microwave candy in bag for seconds or until melted. 3. Cut one corner of the bag with scissors to squeeze melted candy through. Caution: Bag may be hot, so use paper towel or a pot holder to handle it. 4. Gently squeeze chocolate out of bag and into the molds. 5. Tap the side of the mold tray to knock out any air bubbles and flatten chocolate. 6. Place in refrigerator until set. 7. Pop candy of molds and serve.
