1 Oregon State University/Crook County Extension Crook County 4-H Clover June 2018 Volume 34 Issue 1 Youth of the Month Tiffiney was nominated because Tiffiney makes every meeting and every other 4-H Event. She is very dedicated to 4-H and we couldn t do it without her!! I have been in 4-H for 5 years. My projects are market and dairy goat along with cooking. 4-H has been important to me because it has helped me learn life skills, like record taking and how to take care of my animals. 4-H supports the community by being involved and helping others through community service and educational opportunities. I love doing 4-H and meeting others who enjoy the same things as I do. Nominate a club, leader, youth and friend of 4-H in the office! 2 4-H Staffing update from our State 4-H Program Leader Pamela Rose Please read the copy of the below. We received this update earlier this week from the state. I would like to assure all of you that the immediate plan is for things to continue as thay have for the last six months. Thank you for all of you who gave your time and energy to be a part of the hiring process. Your dedication to this program is amazing and I look forward to seeing you all as we move through this busy but exciting Fair Season! Dear 4-H Faculty and Staff, Our Oregon 4-H program budget is experiencing a financial shortfall. In the current and past biennial budgets, the OSU Extension Service has not received funding at the continuing service level needed to keep up with cost increases. Personnel is the largest portion of our budget (90%), and most of the cost increases are due to cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) as well as mandatory salary increases. We need to make some adjustments immediately to begin addressing these budget challenges for fiscal year 2019, and beyond. The following positions (funded by state 4-H funds) are not being refilled at this time: Marion County 4-H position (vacant for almost a year) Crook County 4-H position (vacant since December 31 search cancelled) Wasco County 4-H position (vacant since December 31 search cancelled) Linn County 4-H positon (vacant since May 1) Grant County 4-H position (vacant since June 8) Deschutes County 4-H EPA position (planned vacancy for August) As you all know we are also looking at ways to increase funds, such as increasing our State 4-H Fees (including collecting these fees from 4-H Cloverbuds) and looking at new sponsors and partnerships. I will continue to keep you up-to-date as things change. We hope for better news during the next fiscal year budget cycle. This will be a difficult journey and I fully appreciate the challenges that these vacancies mean for each county. I hope it also gives us a chance to be very intentional about how we continue to work together to keep our program Growing and Thriving! Shannon is a College Student at Texas Tech University and studying Agriculture Education. She grew up in Bend, OR and was active in 4-H and FFA. This summer she will help Kim and I in the office and with planning and organizing fair. Please welcome Shannon when you get the chance to meet her!

There is also a team presnentaion. Last year Crook County sent two youth and a coach to the National FCS Competition in Denver, CO. The intermediate and senior youth who earned a blue ribbon or higher qualify to comete at the state contest for a chance to attend the national contest nextyear! Record Book Level 1 Advancements must be complete Reminder: Entry Forms, Consent forms and Stall Fees are Due July 5th Please fill out forms and turn them into your leaders. Then leaders will turn them all in together. Leaders and parents have to sign off for youth to participate in Gaming, Cow Working and Roping. Leaders must have seen the youth participate in these activities on the horse they have declared for fair. This count will be compared to fair enrollments and discrepancies may cause your club not to get the correct number of stalls/pens. Every attempt will be made to allow one tack area per ten exhibitors. Members may be required to share stalls/pens depending on space. per person per project. For example, one youth with ONLY a sheep project will pay. A youth with a sheep project AND a goat project will pay $18. You are not paying by the pen, but by the project.
