If there is no school or early dismissal from school in Allegany County due to inclement weather, all county sponsored 4-H events that day/evening will be cancelled. Contact your club leader or our office to determine if club activities are cancelled. MARYLAND 4-H LEGISLATIVE DAY FEBRUARY 20, 2017 Calling all Maryland 4-H'ers across the state! As in past years, 4-Hers and families are invited to take advantage of a group rate. Applications due January 10. Conferences take place fall Lacie can help you prepare these if you have questions or need assistance. SCHOLARSHIPS County Scholarships Scholarships are available year round for active 4-H members and 4-H volunteers to attend workshops, camps and other 4-H activities. Note: Applications must be submitted before the registration deadline for the event. Academic Scholarships Applications for the 2017/2018 academic year will be accepted beginning February 1. 4-H members who are planning to continue their education after high school and returning students are encouraged to apply. 3 MARYLAND FRIEND OF 4-H AWARD The Maryland Friend of 4-H Award is designed to recognize an individual that has provided extensive service, leadership, resources or financial support to the 4-H program, at the local, county, state or national level. The recognition can be for leadership and service to project areas, a specific activity or program, or to 4-H resource development. This award is designed to recognize their support regardless of the length of time, therefore, a nominee may have only one year of support, but that support would be substantial and/or vital to one or more 4-H programs. This award does not apply to any UME Volunteer or Professional. For Volunteer Association By- Laws and meeting dates, visit: volunteers RECORD BOOKS ARE DUE FEBRUARY 1 TO THE 4-H OFFICE. (NO EXCEPTIONS) Your record book must contain the following items to be considered complete: 1. Sturdy Cover - A 4-H record book cover, other notebook or report cover with fasteners. Please put your name on the front of the book. 2. Title page Name, recent photo, 4-H age and club name(s). 3. Table of Contents List items in your book. 4. Maryland 4-H Summary Record - Submit only one for the current year H Story - Include information about your year in 4-H such as projects and activities H Project Record - Complete one for each project area. If a 4-H project workbook was used, put it behind that project sheet. Livestock Fair Eligibility: To meet fair eligibility to show livestock, members must submit a complete record book with a completed project sheet for each livestock project exhibited at the 2016 fair in order to show at the 2017 fair. For a Record Book Guide which gives the order of the record book and what not to put in your record book, jparrish@umd.edu or visit: -h-forms Don t forget to have your leader review and sign the book before you turn it in on February 1. DIAMOND CLOVER Are you working towards achieving levels 1 through 5 of the Diamond Clover Awards? They are due to the 4-H Office by February 1, 2017 with your record book!. There will be two Maryland 4-H Healthy Living Summits: February 11 at the Montgomery County Extension Office and February 25 at the Queen Anne's County 4-H Park from 10am to 2pm. The same agenda will be offered at each location -- workshops, food stations, games and lunch. Each 4-Her will go home with an assortment of healthy living messages to share at their local 4-H meetings and at county events as appropriate. Registration is FREE - but we ask you to sign up so that we are prepared with enough materials for each participant. YOUNG ALUMNI LIAISON The Maryland 4-H Volunteers Association is currently accepting applications to fill the Young Alumni Liaison position and would love to have many wonderful graduates of the 4-H program apply! The Young Alumni Liaison (one appointed every odd year and one appointed every even year) will be chosen through an application and interview process to serve a two-year term. He/She will be tasked with welcoming new volunteers ages and helping to ease the transition from that of 4-H member to volunteer. The individuals will also serve as appointed members of the Executive Committee and chairpersons of the Young Alumni Committee. All applications and supplemental materials are due at 11:59pm on Friday, January 13. All applicants should be between the age of and be an official UME certified volunteer or be signed up for an upcoming training within the next 6 months. If you are interested in serving in this position, or know someone who may be interested in applying, please share the link below as needed. 5 ANIMAL SCIENCE RECORD KEEPING FORMS BEEF TAGGING Over 30 beef were tagged on Saturday, November 19 for steer tagging. Thank to the volunteers who assisted: Howard Cessna, JoAnn Flinn, Danielle Flinn, Eric Flinn, Bill McKenzie, Eddie Ott, and Chad Cessna and all other gate and trailer helpers. Also thank you to the Cessna family for allowing 4- H to use their facility for the tagging. Livestock Dates: February 6, 13, 20 and 27 Livestock Skillathon Practice, 6:30 p.m. (Call Lacie if interested) May 1 Due to our office: ALL Livestock Registrations, County Bred Entry Cards, Bred & Owned Entry Cards, Horse, Chicken, Rabbit Registrations, Breeding/ Performance Leases for all animals exhibiting at fair both breeding and market! 4-H Large Animal Market Project Record: Complete one per project type for market steers, feeder steers, market sheep, market goats, market swine. Example: Garfield took a market steer, a feeder steer, and a market sheep. Garfield should have three market project records completed. 4-H Large Animal Breeding Project Record: Complete one per species for breeding beef, breeding sheep, breeding meat goats, breeding dairy goats, breeding dairy cattle, breeding swine. Example: Garfield took a breeding sheep and a breeding beef. Garfield should have two breeding project records completed. 4-H Poultry Project Record: Complete one for all poultry market chickens, fancy chickens, layer chickens, etc. Example: Garfield took a pen of market chickens and a pen of fancy chickens. Garfield should have one poultry project record completed. 4-H Rabbit/Cavy Project Record: Complete one per category market rabbits, breeding rabbits. Example: Garfield took a pen of market rabbits and a pen of breeding rabbits. Garfield should have two rabbit project records completed. 4-H Horse Project Record: Complete one for all horses. Example: Garfield took a horse to the fair. Garfield should have one horse project records completed. Annie s Project February 21-April 11, 2017 Garrett College Northern Outreach Center Grantsville, MD Annie s Project is designed to empower farm women to manage information systems used in critical decision making processes and to build local networks throughout the state. The eight-week course will cover the five areas of risk management: production risk, market risk, financial risk, legal risk, and human risk. Annie's Project has also been approved as an official training program for Farm Service Agency (FSA) borrowers. Any person (male or female) is welcome to participate in Annie's Project. Public Speaking The 4-H Service Award is designed to reward a nominee who has performed numerous, unselfish acts of service to 4-H and others throughout their community and their state. This nominee will be one who performs acts of service from the most menial to the most important with a giving spirit both within the 4-H community and their world. The 4-H Citizenship Award should recognize an individual that exemplifies sterling citizenship characteristics. This individual should have a record of commitment to their club, community and country and should be a mentor to others providing inspiration and encouragement to others to do the same. The 4-H Leadership Award should recognize individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills on the local, county, state and possibly national level. These nominees leadership skills should show initiative, innovation, and a dedication to the 4-H program with the ability to make things happen. Honorary 4-H Club Members: The nominees must have volunteered for 3 or more years and were not 4-H members as a youth. They have become involved in the 4-H organization as adults. They have given outstanding leadership to 4-H with exemplary results. They help make a difference in the lives of youth and families. This award is a great way to recognize those involved in the military or after-school programs or for special interest leader recognition. The 4-H Alumni Award is designed to honor 4-H members who have continued their love and support of 4-H into their adult lives. Hard work and determination has led to exemplary personal success and the nominee attributes this success to the life skills learned as a 4-H member. This nominee s continuing dedication to and acknowledgement of the 4-H program should be the main criteria for this award. GOBBLE, GOBBLE During their November meeting, the Busy Bees 4-H Club made turkey crafts for the Thanksgiving holiday. Pictured: Ava Miler, Lacey Rivers, Emma Dudley and Evan Padovini COMMUNITY SERVICE The Paws N Pals 4-H Club was busy in 2016 with different community service projects. The club spent time raking leaves for the elderly and baking cookies for service men and women overseas. They also visited the Golden Living Nursing Home residents and shared some conversation and Christmas cards.

Glue or tape. Scissors A black permanent marker or crayon How To Do It: 1. Cut your sheet music or paper to the size of your oatmeal container. 2. With glue or tape, attach the sheet music to the container. 3. Cut a heart shape out of your scrapbook paper. 4. Write the phrase of your choice on the heart. 5. Attach the heart to the container with glue or tape. 6. Add embellishments such as a bow to the lid of the container. VALENTINE FRUIT KABOBS Use fruits that are firm enough to withstand having a hole dug into them, heart-shaped cookie cutters and bamboo skewers. Some of the fruits you can use include apples, pineapples or melons. Make heart fruits using a cookie cutter which will be fun for the kids to do. Have the fruit pieces threaded onto the skewers and the family can enjoy.
