Speech Categories: 4-H Pledge (recited by Clovers and first-year members with no judging) 30-second Radio Spot Prepared Speech Extemporaneous Interpretation (Dramatic, Poetry, or Humorous) Rules are available at the Extension Office or online at: Register by calling the 4-H Office at or jparrish@umd.edu by March 5. An emcee and host/hostess are also needed. Please call if interested. ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT DINNER SUNDAY, APRIL 27 AT 3:00 P.M. FAIRGROUNDS All 4-H families and supporters are invited to attend a dinner to recognize 4-H members and volunteers. Chicken and beverages will be provided. We are asking each family to bring a covered dish and dessert. Older Youth will be needed to set up starting at 2:00 p.m. and families are being asked to help with clean up after the dinner. Please make reservations by calling or jparrish@umd.edu with the number attending and the dishes you can provide by April 24. 2 Officer Training Training for club officers will be held Tuesday March 4, 6:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. Learn the duties of the various 4-H club officers. Help is needed from older youth and adult volunteers. To register, call or by February 28, New UME Volunteer Training Volunteer training for new UME volunteers is scheduled for April 29, 6:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. Light refreshments will be served. To register, call the office or by April 28. Member Fees are due May 1. Club leaders will receive a current club list from our office to calculate your fees. Treasurer s Books with your Annual Financial Report and Club Inventory Report for July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 are due to this office by September 1, \ 2014 Fair Book Design Contest 4-H/FFA members 8 years old or older as of January 1, 2014 can submit designs for the 2014 Fair Book. All qualified entries will be judged and prizes will be awarded for the top 3 entries. The winning design will be the cover for of the 2014 fair book. All entries will be on display in the Exhibit Hall during fair week. They may be picked up after fair during exhibit take out on Sunday, July H and FFA logos can be used; however if using either logo, you must include both. Logos cannot be duplicated. (You must use official logos which are available at the Extension Office.) For complete rules and an entry form, call the 4-H Office at or visit: Entries due March 15. Late entries will not be judged. EASTER EGG HUNT The annual Cumberland Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Friday, April 18 at the Constitution Park. Each year Allegany County 4-H members assist with this community event. If you plan to participate that day, please call or jparrish@umd.edu. 4-H SCHOLARSHIPS Applications for the 2014/2015 academic year are now being accepted. 4-H members planning to continue their education after high school and returning students are encouraged to apply. Public Speaking A workshop for youth & adults from beginner to experienced skill levels will be held at the Howard County Fairgrounds, March 22, 2014 from 8:30a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration fee is $15 which includes lunch, sample notebook, and all materials. Workshop will include seam finishes, fitting, tailoring, pressing & ironing, closures, design and creativity, hems, plaids, facings & waistbands, interfacing, finishing details, advanced seam finishes & bound buttonholes. RABBIT WORKSHOP The Rabbit Workshop planned for Saturday, April 26, 2014, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Garrett County College Room 201, 202, 203, & 204 is a hands-on learning experience for youth and their rabbits. This workshop is open to any youth wanting to know more about rabbits and those taking 4-H rabbit projects. Workshop topics will include Rabbit Ethics, Health Checks, Showmanship, Basic Handling, and Rabbit Nutrition. A Rabbit Raffle table and Rabbit Breed contest will be offered for fun. Refreshments will be sold. All participants should bring their rabbits in a carrying cage. Area rabbit breeders will have bunnies for sale! For additional information crafts4ewe@hotmail.com or CAMP ALGAWA Its not too early to start thinking about 4-H Camp. This year s Camp Algawa will be June 29 to July 3 at the Western Maryland 4-H Education Center in Garrett County. Exciting things are being planned for the week, including classes in marksmanship, environmental studies, canoeing, archery, and crafts, recreation, campfires, food, fund and new friends. 4 ANIMAL SCIENCE QUALITY ASSURANCE OPENS MARCH 15 JUNIOR SHEEP & GOAT SKILLATHON The Junior Sheep & Wool Skillathon has been changed to the Junior Sheep & Goat Skillathon. It will be held Sunday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, Maryland. The skillathon is open to any youth between the ages of 8 and 18. Individuals and teams (of 3 or 4) from any county or state may compete. The preregistration deadline for individuals (requested) and teams (required) is April 28. Pre-register by sending names, ages, and team affiliations via to Susan Schoenian at sschoen@umd.edu (or via fax at (301) Online registration is possible at The site will be reopened on March 15, 2014 to certify exhibits for the 2014 fair/show season. If you are new to the system, be sure to create an account. If you are a returning user, you will need your login and password from last year. You only need to take the quality assurance training once per age division, instead of every other year. So each time you enter a new age division you will need to take QA or if you choose to show a new species since last time you completed it, you will also need to return to the online system and complete the section on that new species. All members needing QA must complete it online by July 1 to exhibit at the Allegany County Fair. If you do not have internet access, you can visit a local library or the Extension Office. Call for more details. The website is: A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTER FOR CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION: Are you interested in possibly pursuing an agriculture career? The Center for Career and Technical Education is currently seeking enrollments for students in grades The Center for Career and Technical Education offers a two-year completer program in CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education). The Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) is a program of study (POS) within the Environmental, Agricultural, and Natural Resources Career Cluster. The CASE Program of Study prepares students to be successful in numerous careers in the agricultural sciences as well as preparing them to further their education at the post-secondary level. This inquiry-based POS incorporates classroom learning, FFA leadership and career development, as well as outside of the classroom experiences through Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE) and other internship opportunities. 5 MORE ANIMAL SCIENCE! SPRING LIVESTOCK WEIGH-IN MD 4-H ANIMAL SCIENCE VOLUNTEER WEBINAR SERIES Maryland 4-H is offering a series of monthly webinars for Animal Science Project Leaders/ Volunteers. All webinars will be at 7:00 p.m. March 25 Liabilities Surrounding Animal Projects and Events April 29 Club Activities to Support Animal Projects May 27 Volunteer Roles in Clubs Junior National Hereford Expo The Junior National Hereford Expo will be in Harrisburg, PA this summer! Even if you do not have a registered Hereford to show, it is an amazing thing to see a national show! From July 6 to 12, this summer show provides an opportunity for competition between junior members and their cattle projects. A hands-on type of program for youth provides educational, leadership and motivational forums. During the event, youth can participate in 22 skill-based contests. For more information visit: jnhe Spring weigh-in is set for April 26 from 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. This will be for all market sheep, swine, goats, feeder steers, as well as any commercial breeding animals. Livestock forms are available at the office. Call or jparrish@umd.edu to get your forms ahead of time. All livestock forms are due May 1 to the 4-H Office. This includes: Registration forms, County Bred, Bred & Owned, and Breeding/Performance animal leases. Get your forms now to save time that day. However, forms will still be available at tagging. LIVESTOCK & MINIMUM WEIGHTS Purchasing your fair animals soon? Keep in mind the minimum required weights to exhibit at the 2014 fair when shopping for your project animals Fair: Market Swine 200 lb minimum, no top limit Market Sheep lb minimum, no top limit Market Goats 40 lb minimum, no top limit Feeder Steers must be under 700 lbs So what do they need to weigh at spring tagging on April 26? Take the time to evaluate how much your animal will need to gain from the time you purchase until fair weigh-in to be sure your animal gains enough weight to meet the show weight requirements. For example, if you would like your market swine to weigh 250 pounds at the fair; and we assume most hogs gain two pounds per day. Fair weigh-in is July 13, and our spring tagging is April 26- that equals 78 days. 78 days x 2 lbs/day = 156 lbs of gain from spring tagging until fair. So if you want a 250 lb pig at fair: 250 lb final weight minus 156 lb assumed gain from tagging to fair equals 94 lb ( =94). So your pig should weigh about 94 lbs at spring tagging. Perhaps assume average daily gain: Swine -2 lbs/day Sheep -.5 lb/day Goats.3 lb/day Feeder steers 1.5 lb/day Keep in mind these are only averages; daily gain can depend greatly on the animal s frame size and their feed. CRAFT CORNER LIGHT BULB LAMB Instructions: 1. Paint a standard light bulb white and let dry. 2. Add a face with pink paint, and then more facial features with black and white paint. 3. Wrap the metal screw top with white yarn to give the sheep a hat. 4. Glue on black pom-poms for the feet and finish with a bow. 5. Decorate lambs with other crafty embellishments, such as glitter or paint, if desired.
