4 This year was the 45th year 4-H members have rode from Maybee to East Lansing. Over 50 bikers and sag wagons made the 107 mile journey over the course of three days. The group celebrated their arrival on Tuesday, June 20th upon their arrival to Holmes Hall at the campus of Michigan State University. It was a great chance for 4- Hers to meet others from around the county as they prepared for the week ahead of them at Exploration Days. Exploration Days is an opportunity for the youths to stay in a dorm, take part in educational sessions around campus, serve as county delegates and meet new friends. About 2,500 youth between the ages of take part in the program, with Monroe County having the largest delegation attending. A total of 131 youth and adults from Monroe County spent three days on the gorgeous campus of MSU for 4-H Exploration Days!

5 2017 Monroe County Thursday, July 27 All projects except flowers, vegetables and livestock must be brought to fair. Freezing, canning, baking, microwave candy and specialty foods will be judged as you bring them to the fair on Thursday. Your crafts, etc. will be entered on Thursday and judged on Friday. If you are exhibiting in any of the food areas, plan to arrive between 2:00 and 6:00 pm to be judged. Livestock tack boxes that have been entered in the contest must be in place by 6:30pm on Thursday, and will be judged on Friday. All others will be allowed in Friday afternoon. Project tags must be completed and firmly attached to your article. Narrations and exhibit tags for modeling must be submitted on Thursday, as well as the presentations for group performances. Narrations should be 50 words or less. Small Animal Dressup narrations may be entered until noon on Saturday. TEAM INVENTIONS-This popular activity will begin at 7:00pm on Thursday. Members should report to the 4-H Activity Center. Sign-up with your team between 2:00 pm and 6:30pm in preparation for the contest. Bring your own markers, scissors, glue guns, glue sticks and tape. Everything else will be provided. Teams will not be chosen at the event. Communications All public speaking, including the Master Stockman Communication Contests must be scheduled on Thursday. Please sign-up at the 4-H Office. All contests will be held on Friday. Check Premium Catalog for entry time of all livestock, and for the exact time for entries into the Produce Building. FAIR PARADE-July 30, 2017 at 1:00 pm It will be leaving from Jones Street and North Monroe- arrive no later than 12:15pm! FAIR OPENS officially opens at 10:00am on Sunday, July 30, 2017.

7 Superintendents Meeting All Adult Superintendents are reminded that they must attend the Superintendents meeting scheduled for July 7pm at the 4-H Activity Center. It is very important that all Superintendents attend this meeting to learn about the 2017 fair and to pick up your materials. All materials, with the exception of the judging books will be available. Please plan on staying for the entire meeting. Opening Ceremonies for 2017 It has become a tradition for the 4-H Council to host a BBQ and have a small opening celebration on Sunday Afternoon of the. We would like to invite all 4-H Families, Community Sponsors, and other interested people to attend. Sunday July 4:30pm outside the 4-HActivity Center. Dedication of new benches and the inclusion of several new bricks will be a part of the program. At the conclusion of the program, the bell will ring to announce the start of the 2017! 8 8 Market Livestock If you have any questions, need help, or your animal loses a tag, please call your Superintendent immediately. Beef-Lee Chapman Sheep Mark Chapman Swine Ray Kuehnlein The market specie Superintendents will be doing random checks of beef, sheep and swine projects this year so make sure you animal is where it is supposed to be! BARN SET-UP Junior Livestock Association & Small Animal Association invites you to the Annual Barn Set-up Tuesday July 6pm Please come ready to work! Gloves, tools and extra help is appreciated! Food will be served after setup

10 4-H Dorms For those interested in staying in the 4-H Dorms. the sign up meeting is: July 13th at Activity Center. The $ fee will be payable at the meeting. We will also be requesting a $25.00 cash deposit. This will be returned unless something is damaged, broken, or the member goes over their food allowance. Registration papers must be notarized! A notary will be available at the meeting on the 13th. Members 10 and over will begin their stay on Sunday, July 30th and return home on Sunday morning, August 6th. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Again this year, volunteers will be collecting cardboard and pop cans during the fair. Everyone is welcome to assist one or more nights during the fair. These items are collected each evening after 11:00pm and stored in the large recycling bins behind the Animal Control building. This is a great community service activity for clubs and individuals. Please call the Extension Office to sign up. Barn VS Barn Teen Ambassadors is having a competition between the barns to see what barn can collect the MOST school supplies for local students in need. A list of items needed will be handed out at the Superintendent meeting on July 20th. Please see your Superintendent for a list of items needed. Drop off all donations at the Teen Ambassadors office during week: July 30th through August 5th. 11 4-H Royalty As we approach the 2017 Monroe County royalty nomination are upon us. You can be nominated through their local community clubs, county boards, committees, or special projects. The H Royalty Samantha Beaudrie, Joel Spotts, Jaren Schmidt and Stephen Wiesler have done an outstanding job and continue to represent us well. It is encouraged that you participate in the interview process which will be held on Tuesday, July 18th at 7:00pm at the 4-H Activity Center on the fairgrounds. Please dress appropriately for interview. To be eligible for being named county royalty, you MUST participate in an in-person interview. No Phone interviews will be allowed. As candidates, you are invited to ride on a float in the Parade on Sunday, July 30 at 1:00pm. Meet at the parade start site by 12:00pm if you wish to ride.

19 STATEWIDE NEWS AREA 2017 State 4-H Dog Show This event presented each August by Michigan State University ( Extension ( 4-H Youth Development ( allows participants to: Present dogs in the following classes: Leader Dog/Service-Dog Puppy Freestyle Junior Showmanship Obedience Rally Agility Brace Teams Cloverbud Display honesty, respect for others, good sportsmanship, understanding of the humane and ethical care and treatment of animals, and their ability to follow 4-H policies and procedures Participate in free Educational Posters and Photography Contests 19 Who Should Attend? Exhibitors must be Michigan 4-H'ers (but not necessarily enrolled in a 4-H dog project) aged 9 to 19 years, as of January 1, Cloverbud division youth must be 5 to 8 years old, as of January 1, H members can show up to two dogs (5 months or older) of any breed. Naturally, spectators are welcome! Date and Location of the Show: August 19, 2017, the MSU Pavilion ( What Is the Cost of the Show? The nonrefundable registration fees are $6 per dog and $10 per class. Camping is available at the MSU Pavilion for $30 per night (Friday and Saturday only) How Does Someone Register?
