Youth learned facts about penguins and then put their creative skills to the test as they built their very own penguin to take home. The second session made two penguins. The extra penguins were taken to Rosewood Nursing Home to decorate and spread some winter cheer to the residents. Their Happy Feet brought Happy Hearts. 8 SCHOLARSHIPS ILLINOIS 4-H FOUNDATION provides two scholarships for active 4-H members who are seniors in high school or freshmen in college. $1,000 Illinois 4-H Livestock Scholarship is available to 1 or 2 members who have demonstrated mastery in the livestock area and plan to continue their education in the area of agriculture. Members must have been involved in the livestock project a minimum of three years. You must have been a 4-H member for at least 5 years and attending either a 4-year university, community college, or trade school. Applications are due March 1. Download the go.illinois.edu/4hscholarships. Eight $1,000 Legacy of Leadership Scholarships are offered to members who have demonstrated overall mastery and leadership in the 4-H program. You must have been a member for at least 5 years and attending either a 4-year university, community college, or trade school. Applications are due March 1. Download the go.illinois.edu/4hscholarships. Finalists must submit a video of your 4-H accomplishments. Additional scholarships are provided by partner organizations. See if you qualify for one of these scholarships. CROP SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS College students entering their junior year who are studying a crop science or related field can apply for a $4,000 scholarship. Up to five scholarships sponsored by the Illinois Soybean Association. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1. Student must attend Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Western Illinois University, or University of Illinois. Winners may reapply for an additional year. Apply iaafoundation.org/scholarships or call Angel Terrell at EXTENSION TO ACES SCHOLARSHIP Incoming freshmen and transfer students to University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences may apply for a NEW $2,500 scholarship. This year, 54 scholarships (two per each of Extension s 27 units) will be awarded. To learn academics.aces.illinois.edu/scholarships/newstudents. FARM CREDIT ILLINOIS SCHOLARSHIPS High school seniors planning careers in agriculture may apply for a $2,000 scholarship. Farm Credit Illinois will provide 30 scholarships to youth who live or farm in one of the 60 counties in their service area. The first $1,000 will be distributed for the Fall 2018 semester, and the second $1,000 will be applied during the Fall 2020 semester. Apply online at farmcreditil.com before February 28. Are going to University of Illinois College of ACES? The college is MATCHING this scholarship, dollar for dollar! Double your money while getting a great ag education! 8

The certification must be done if you are enrolled in one of the following projects: beef, dairy, cats, dogs, goats, horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine. Members who don t complete the certification before the show will be removed from the project and not be allowed to show. Anyone who has already taken the certification does not need to retake the test. The local office has a list of those already certified. The website is located online at: web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/. This rule applies to 4-H members who exhibit live animals AND poster exhibits. Meat Goats Does Owned by May 15, 2018 Final year for market heifer division at state fair junior show Illinois State Fair Junior Livestock officials have announced this is the final year for the market heifer division at the state fair junior beef show. Market heifers will show at the 2018 Illinois State Fair. Poultry YOU MUST FOLLOW your county 4-H Showbook requirements or call your local Extension office for advice. All birds must be hatched after January 1, 2018 except for Adult/Mature breeding trio which must be hatched before January 1, Rabbits Please refer to your county 4-H showbook as the age range of the Buck and Doe as well as Fryer Pens and Single Fryers. Last year s showbook is online at: Please choose the appropriate county 4-H page to find the age and weight requirements. CAMPING AT ILLINOIS STATE FAIR GUIDELINES March 30: Camping applications will be available online or in person at the Emmerson Building. April 8AM: NEW DATE: Camping applications accepted. There is a possibility these will be accepted online. Check the ISF website for more information. Camping assignment is on a first come, first served basis, with priority given to vendors/concessionaires and livestock exhibitors staying 6 nights or longer. Campsite preference is not guaranteed. All campsites will be assigned at the discretion of the Credentials Office. 10

Level Participate in at least one 4-H activity or event outside my county JOANN FABRICS Partners with 4-H Illinois 4-H and JOANN Fabrics stores want to see more kids learning by doing, creating and making. Here are two ways to get involved. During February, anyone shopping at one of the 865 JOANN stores across the U.S. can show their love for 4-H by purchasing either a $1 or $4 Paper Clover. The donations will funnel back to the national and local 4-H programs. The Paper Clovers have a craft instruction on the back for customers to take home and try. Anyone donating a $4 Paper Clover will receive a $4 off coupon to use at JOANN on a return visit. Governor s Volunteer Service Awards Serve Illinois is now accepting applications for the Governor's Volunteer Service Awards. There are separate divisions for youth, adult, senior, AmeriCorps, and Senior Corps volunteers. Winners will receive their awards in April in Springfield. Nominations are due February 15. Don't miss your chance to thank a person who makes a difference every day! 12 What: Speaking for Illinois Training When: Saturday, February 10 Where: Jackson County Extension Office in Murphysboro Registration is open go.illinois.edu/4hsfil4h. Registration will close January 31 or when filled. The day-long training, provided by the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team, gives you the chance to explore your own 4-H history and why you are involved, put that story into words, and learn the best ways to approach donors, civic groups, elected officials, and others to talk about 4-H. Learn why 4-H believes in Positive Youth Development and how we emphasize the essential elements of Belonging, Independence, Generosity and Mastery. All of this and more is a part of Speaking for Illinois 4-H! Once you re trained, you ll receive an invitation to be a part of our Legislative Connection events at the State Capitol this spring. ALL AGES are welcome to join us for a variety of activities on Friday, March 9th. Project Learning Individual Participated in an individual apprenticeship, job shadow experience or other career exploration activity related to my project area. OR Project Learning Multi, State Went on a 4-H fieldtrip or tour related to my 4-H project area beyond my county related to my project Intern Opportunity for College Students With 4-H Experience College students can put their 4-H experience to work while they develop their professional skills in youth development, group facilitation, critical thinking, and program management as a Project Youth Extension Service (YES!) intern. Project YES! Interns provide educational activities for youth of military families. This is a 12- month internship with effective dates of June 2018 May Selected interns must participate in the 2018 Project YES intern orientation to be held May 18-26, 2018 at NC State University. Applications deadline is March 1. More Information and application materials can be found at Women Changing the Face of Agriculture Conference Registration for the 2018 Women Changing the Face of Agriculture Conference is now open! womenchangingthefaceofagriculture.com. Registration fee for students is only $15. The conference will be March 9 at the Activities and Recreation Center at University of Illinois in Champaign. 13 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest Saturday, February 24, 2018 ~ Embassy Suites Hotel Peoria, IL Held in conjunction with the Illinois Jr. Holstein Association Spring Thing workshop. The contest is open to all 4-H members, and you do not have to be enrolled in dairy or own dairy cattle. Teams of four can compete, or individuals can be added to other teams. The State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl team will be selected from the eligible 4-H members participating at this state contest. Registration will be handled through the county offices in January. Winners of the regional contests advance to the state competitions which will be held April 21 & 22 on the U of I campus. Registration begins soon for Hippology and Horse Bowl Contests. You do not need to own a horse to participate in these educational and fun events. State 4-H Horse Speaking Contest April 21 during the state 4-H Equine Contest. Our health is directly tied to the health of our planet. So, this year s State 4-H Robotics Competition is all about environmental health! Get all the go.illinois.edu/4hrobotics. Your Envirobot will illuminate the many environmental challenges we face as we try to heal our planet. NEW this year (replacing the teamwork challenge): Each team will identify one environmental health issue and propose a potential solution or product to help mitigate the negative effect of the issue. Fifty $400 Community Improvement Grants are available. Clubs must be located in one of the 60 central and southern Illinois counties served by Farm Credit Illinois. 14 National 4-H Day of Service April 28, H clubs across the nation will be using their hands to larger service as part of the National 4-H Day of Service during April. 4-H ers can work on projects at any time during the month of April, however April 28 as been identified as the date to celebrate the culmination of service outreach. The goal of National 4-H Day of Service is to encourage 4-H members in every county to make a positive difference. National 4-H Day of Service is open to everyone in the community, such as 4-H members, families, volunteers and community partners. Service projects can be done by individuals or as an entire county 4-H program. No matter what the project, this will be a day to make a difference. Community Service Club Club Participate in a group service activity organized by my 4-H club OR Community Service Individual Participate in individual service activity using project specific skills or knowledge from 4-H OR Club Planned a group service activity for my 4-H club Quilt Contest Where in Zootopia is a 4-Leaf Clover The Decatur Quilters Guild is sponsoring a youth quilt contest, and Illinois 4-H members are encouraged to participate. Amazing prizes are available to youth in four age divisions. Learn more at Icanquiltnsew.com. The theme of the contest is Where in Zootopia is a 4-leaf clover. Quilts can be no larger than 50 x50 and no smaller than 24 x24. Registration opens April 15 and closes May 15. Each contestant must submit a 200-word initial report by May 31. This Progress Report Essay must be written by the contestant and explain their quilt construction plans and include a picture of them working on their quilt with their adult mentor, parent, or leader. Contestants will submit a 200 word Final Report Essay and photo of them holding their finished quilt no later than June 15, 2018 by to ICanQuiltnSew-IL@sewverysmooth.com.
