Be sure to read this Clover Connection to find club work schedules, judging schedules and much more VERY IMPORTANT information to help you get prepared for the Clayton County Fair. Make sure you say THANK YOU to all of the volunteers, fair board members, club leaders and FFA advisors who are helping to make the Clayton County Fair a fun and memorable experience. Without the help of these individuals, this opportunity wouldn t be available. Also be sure to read the rules in the fair book before the fair to avoid being disappointed at the fair! If you have any questions, be sure to ask! 4-H Leaders & FFA Advisors will be picking up their fair packets at the annual pre-fair meeting on July 27. Be sure to ask them for your entry tags, stall cards, exhibitor number, coupons and much more! Thank you to everyone who helped with fairgrounds clean-up! Great job painting! See you at the fair! Tammy Muller County Youth Coordinator Thank you to everyone who did their fair entries on time! Overall the new online entry process went very well. There were a few glitches, but we worked through them. It was a learning process for everyone. We are now busy now processing over 3300 entries and discovering what the program can do. Please be patience with the Extension staff and volunteers as it is new to all of us. Special thanks to Alpine Communications for the Wi-Fi at county fair so we quickly process the records and reports. It should be a fun & exciting fair again this year. 2 FAIR CHAPERONES Overnight Chaperones at the Fair All adult volunteers who are staying overnight at the fairgrounds must have a background screening completed before the fair. Forms can be found on our webpage at volunteer. forms to tamuller@iastate.edu or drop off at the Extension Office. FLOWER POT CHALLENGE Flower Pot Challenge Again this year we are asking 4-H Clubs, organizations, or individuals to help brighten the Clayton County Fair Grounds. Each club is asked to bring one or more flowering pots to the Clayton County Fair to help decorate the grounds. Start making plans now. COUNTY COUNCIL New 4-H County Council Members Selected Clayton County Extension Youth & 4-H Youth Development Committee is pleased to announce the new members for the H County Council. 4-H members selected were Andrey Shirbroun, Farmersburg; Carson Wille, Strawberry Point; Cody Mueller, Strawberry Point; Julie Lenth, Luana; Kristi Eberhardt, Elkader; Levi Tuecke, Garnavillo; Mackenzie Vlazny, Farmersburg; Melanie Lane, Elkader and Tracy Curran, St. Olaf. These new members will join Morgan Fannon, Edgewood; Ted Hilgerson, Elkader; Nicole Wahls, Garnavillo; Molly Andersen, Guttenberg; Chloe Willie, Strawberry Point; Emma Kerns, Edgewood & WesLee Gould, Strawberry Point to lead and implement the Clayton County 4-H program this coming year. The notes do not have to be long, but should express your experiences and feelings. If you need a name or address for your thank you note, contact your club leaders or the Extension Office. LIVESTOCK AUCTION Livestock Auction Participants NEW: All market animals will be considered as selling on Monday unless exhibitor informs Extension Staff by Saturday, August 6 at 2:00 p.m. Livestock Sale time is 9:00 a.m. Sale order will be 1) Market Hogs 2) Market Lambs 3) Market Goats 4) Commercial Poultry & Meat Rabbits 5) Market Beeves All youth selling livestock in the sale should wear appropriate attire such as a 4-H or FFA shirt and blue jeans. Youth must wear closed toe shoes while in the sale arena no sandals or flip flops. Exhibitors are responsible to see that their animals are loaded for transport post sale. Checks for all livestock sold at the livestock auction and swine will be mailed as soon as possible. We need to wait until we receive all of the money from the buyers and the packer before we can issue checks to members. Please be patient while we work on this as it is a time consuming process. If you have any questions, please contact the Extension Office. All exhibitors are responsible to read and comply with Clayton County General Exhibit Rules, 4-H General Rules and Regulations, and all 4-H department exhibit class rules and regulations. Sunday, August 7 7:30 p.m. Non- livestock entries released 8:00 p.m. Livestock entries released (Dogs and horses leave immediately after their show) State Fair Selections: If you have a nonlivestock exhibit selected for the Iowa State Fair, you are responsible to tag and package your exhibit. Please report to the exhibit building at 6:30 pm on Sunday evening to get your exhibit ready for state fair. Arrangements for Food & Nutrition items can be made to pick up on Tuesday, August 9. SILENT AUCTION Silent Auction of State Fair Baked Goods to be Held Wednesday The Extension Youth Committee & 4-H Green Team will be holding a Silent Auction of the State Fair Food & Nutrition prepared foods exhibits. The auction will be held on Wednesday, August 3 from 5-7 near the 4-H Alumni tent. Prepared food items that qualify for the state fair and the alternates will be up for silent auction! The winning bids will be announced during the Share-the-Fun & Style Shows. Purchased items must be paid for and picked up that evening at the 4-H office. All proceeds will help fund 4-H activities EXHIBIT HALL MONITORING Each 4-H Club is expected to have a minimum of 5 neatly dressed members and at least 2 adults present during the entire monitoring time. Primary duties are to help people locate exhibits, to remind people not to handle or touch exhibits, and to keep the buildings free from litter. All monitors should wear a name badge while on duty. Individuals needing to change judging times due to conflicts will be allowed to do so. No clubs will be allowed to check-in before the first club on the list. All 4-H & FFA members MUST be checked in for judging no later that 3:30 pm. Parents and leaders should wait in the waiting areas and not be actively involved in the judging. Judges will begin selecting state fair exhibits as soon as they have completed judging all individual exhibits in their department. All 4-H ers, parents, and leaders except those listed helpers are asked to remain out of the judging area during state fair selections Conference Judging Tips Be sure to bring your exhibits, goal sheets/folders/etc., and entry tags with you. When you arrive stop at the check-in table to get a number, then wait in the assigned waiting areas. When it is your turn take your exhibit & entry form sheet with you to the appropriate judge. The judge will circle the ribbon placing. Take your exhibit and entry tag to the ribbon table when you are done with conference judging. Helpers will staple your ribbon to your entry tags. Take your food items to the Bake Sale area. Then place your exhibits in your club booth. (Exhibits being considered for State fair will be set aside until all judging is completed.) What do I wear for fair judging? 4-H ers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing representative of the 4-H Program during judging and hosting in the exhibit halls. Suggested 4-H attire consists of 4-H t-shirt, solid green or white blouse or shirt with 4-H chevron and white, green, or dark skirt, slacks, or pants. Shorts, skirts, and dresses should be fingertip length or longer. Clean jeans that are not torn, tattered, or ripped will be acceptable. Some livestock shows may require specific attire. 7 Market Livestock Auction Monday, August 8th at 9:00 AM Sale Order: Market Hogs, Market Lambs, Market Goats, Commercial Poultry and Meat Rabbits, Market Beef ***ALL MARKET ANIMALS WILL BE CONSIDERED AS SELLING ON MONDAY UNLESS EXHIBITOR INFORMS EXTENSION STAFF AT WEIGH IN OR BEFORE 2:00 PM on SATURDAY, AUGUST 6 TH. Exhibitors will also be asked how they would like their parents names listed on the Auction program at check in. Limitations per species do apply and are listed below. NEW this year we will be using bidding numbers at the auction. Numbers will be available during fair at the Barn A office and during the auction. Previous buyers will have preprinted numbers. A sale commission of 2% will be charged on all lots sold. NEW this year if there is enough interest we will have a truck available for beef unable to be sold at auction (exceeding the 2 head limit to sell) to be sold Grade and Yield. Please let Extension staff know at check in if you would like to put animals on the truck. Sale Information and Limitations: Market Swine Three head maximum per exhibitor. The market wethers/market does will be sold by the head (no weights will be used). The exhibitor should be attentive at the auction to know where the market wether/market doe should be tied or loaded following the sale. Poultry An exhibitor is limited to four birds (including special broiler class) being sold in no more than two sale lots. These birds must have been exhibited in the Commercial Birds class. Birds from the Egg Production, Breeding Poultry, or Miscellaneous Birds classes are NOT eligible for the auction. ALL MARKET ANIMALS WILL BE CONSIDERED AS SELLING ON MONDAY UNLESS EXHIBITOR IN- FORMS EXTENSION STAFF AT WEIGH IN OR BEFORE 2:00 PM on SATURDAY, AUGUST 6 TH. The sale order will be random. 9 Cowboy Up at the 2016 Clayton County Fair! Stick Horse Rodeo Sponsored by the Clayton County 4-H Foundation Saturday August 6th 5:00 PM Rodeo Arena on the Fairgrounds Bare-Back Bronco Riding-Ride your stick horse for 6 seconds just like the Cowboys do! Ride your horse as you jump, kick and buck. Wait for the dirt to settle and get your score from the judges! If the horse comes out from under your feetyou have bucked off. Calf Roping-Hop on the saddle a try your hand at roping a calf! Use your strength and skill to capture the calf! Pole Bending-Ride your horse through a series of poles weaving back a forth as you are being timed! The lowest time in each age and weight category wins! Barrel Racing- Test your skill and agility as you go once to the left and twice to the right racing around the barrels! Fastest time in each category wins! Stick Horse Rodeo Rules 1. No Contestant age limit. Contestants will compete against similar age participants. They will compete in timed events with other children. All contestants will be timed or judged. 2. Entry Fee $5/person. 3. Register at the rodeo arena from 4-5 PM. 4. A Parent or Guardian must sign a release form and must also be present during the Stick Horse Events. 5. Long sleeve shirts and boots are best worn clothing but not necessary. 6. Participants may bring their own stick horse or use one that is provided. AG OLYMPICS Ag Olympics is Coming! The County Council is busy planning the 12th annual Clayton County Ag Olympics. It will be held on Sunday, August 7 at 2:30 pm in the large livestock arena. Start recruiting your team members! Join in the FUN! Register your teams by noon on Sunday, August 7 in the 4-H Livestock Office in Barn A during the fair.
