5 Volume 2, Issue 2 The CTLA has a great way to evaluate yearling heifers. Breeders were invited to enter their yearling heifers in a jack pot and see how they measured up to animals from other herds. This year we had two classes and the winners of each class competed to represent the CTLA in the TLBAA Affiliate Princess competition. Judges this year were Ron Walker, President of the AT- LA and Paul Phillips a former Longhorn breeder from Nanton, Ab. We certainly thank them for their time and appreciate their help in selecting our representative for the TLBAA competition. Congratulations to our Winners of the 2014 Heifer Futurity Allemand Ranches Bob & Sharon Allemand Special Thank you to our Judges: Ron Walker & Paul Phillips

7 Volume 2, Issue 2 TLBAA Year End Awards The TLBAA will again be asking for written nominations for the year end awards. All the current information will be in the August and September TRAILS. As I am part of the year end award committee, I wanted to ensure that Canadian members know that we are part of the association and if you have a member in mind that fits the criteria for any of the awards, then please take the time to recognize them for the things they do. So often I hear members say, we don't have a chance with all the members in the U.S. but what's different is, that each nomination if they do fulfill the criteria, will be featured in the TRAILS magazine for other members to notice.. Last year both Canada and Australia had members recognized in the awards. Our members in Canada do alot to promote the breed and the TLBAA, take a minute and think about someone you feel deserves to be recognized for the work they do. This year, one of the changes to the Oct 3rd & 4th, 2014 Mark your calendar & start your selections... In the past we accepted name only, that will not be the case this year. Take the time to read the TRAILS, review the criteria for each award and think about someone you have known or worked with that fits the criteria. Let's make sure that the TLBAA knows that members outside of the U.S.also play a big part in promoting the breed and our association. 11 Volume 2, Issue 2 Trail Blazer The Voice of the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association Volume 2 Issue 2 Canadian Nationals Red Deer Westerner Show By: Deb Lesyk Whatever the name, the show at Red Deer is the only registered show in Canada. During July, breeders gathered at this year's Canadian National to showcase Texas Longhorn cattle during Westerner Days at Red Deer. Both registries were invited and the judge this year was Gary Don Taylor of Okarche, Oklahoma, the current Vice President of the ITLA. There was an added award this year as the Australian affiliate of the TLBAA sponsored the first perpetual trophy for the CTLA. The class selected to win the trophy was the Mature Female Class and the award was designed and made by TLA President, John Bastardi. As John helped the judge evaluate the cattle throughout the show he was in the ring as the judge walked through the eight entries, with calves at side, in the Mature Female Class. With ongoing discussion as they sorted through a variety of entries, the cow selected was Good Knight Plum Coco a seven year old cow with heifer calf at side owned by the Double D Arena at Outlook, Sask. By: Gary Don Taylor As the show continued breeders were delighted with the location of the ring, the crowd that enjoyed the show, and the many positive comments about the breed presented in the classes. It's hard to not be positive about Red Deer, the location is good, the parking is easy, the show venue comfortable and the pay outs quite good compared to other livestock shows. The CTLA would like to thank all our sponsors, the judge, our announcer, Gordon Musgrove and our barn bosses Mark and Tina Stewart who keep doing a great job year after year. We also want to thank John and Jan Bastardi for attending the show and presenting the new award for It will be a great addition to future shows. If you have never shown cattle at Red Deer, we invite you to put it on your calendar for next year, if you have been part of the show, we encourage you to return as it is Canada's only show where we as breeders can promote, and showcase our great cattle. They're putting the "International" in our Texas Longhorn Association Join me in giving a big shout out to the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association (CTLA), another ITLA affiliate. This is ITLA's first International Dual Affiliate in Canada. Mark Stewart, who serves on our board directors for region 1 (Canada and other Countries) is doing a great job working with Gordon Musgrove, president of the CTLA. He is bringing Longhorn enthusiast from all over Canada together for the Westerner Days Celebration in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. What a great time it was and a huge attraction for people visiting the big fair. It was a privilege to be asked to judge their cattle. Our Canadian friends from the North know how to raise quality Longhorns and put on a top-notch show for their members. Let me also add to that shout out, John and Jan Bastardi. They are wonderful people and great breeders from down under. John and Jan are breeders from Austria. John serves as the Texas Longhorns Australia (TLA) President and his wife Jan helps in every way, from cooking for members at their membership meetings to whatever capacity where help is needed. John worked beside me in Canada while I evaluated the cattle. Check them out on their web site; and like them on Facebook. Pictured: Gary Don Taylor, ITLA Vice President; Gordon Musgrove, CTLA President; and John Bastardi, TLA President. It was awesome to listen to John share how they began their herds. Daryl Dickinson, Dickinson Cattle Company, has been one of their primary sources for semen used to grow and develop their herds. They are six generations deep now by using outside sources like Dickinson Cattle Co. and Semkin Longhorns of Oklahoma, among others, to advance their breeding program. Success stories like the CTLA and TLA are great to hear and also experience in person. Success is best achieved when we work together for the betterment of the breed we all love and admire. Let's keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing all of you this fall at our Championship Show in Oklahoma City. August 2014 Edition

17 Volume 2, Issue 2 By: Clinton Bezan In recent years we have seen the horn length on Texas Longhorn cattle increase to the point that bulls and cows are now measuring 90 inches or more tip to tip. The focus on horn length is at least partly driven by horn measuring contests and the resulting bragging rights and increased prices being paid for these cattle. The question I ask myself is: By selecting for increased horn length is there a possibility that other valuable traits may regress to the point where they are detrimental to the breed? In order to properly address this question, I think it is a good idea to first examine some basic principles of genetics. Genotype refers to genetic make up and cannot be influenced by environment or feed quality. Phenotype refers to traits we see and can measure and can greatly be influenced by environment. Genetic traits of an individual are determined when the sperm joins with the ovum at fertilization. The resulting chromosomes and how they are arranged is largely decided by chance therefore the frequency of chromosomes influencing certain traits can have a huge impact on which chromosomes are present in the arrangement within the newly created embryo. That is why when inbreeding is conducted there is a greater chance of the traits exhibited by the parents to also be present in their offspring. There is a higher frequency of chromosomes that effect these traits in the genetic pool to begin with. Some of the factors that influence genetic progress are heritability, genetic correlation, generation interval and the number of traits selected for. Heritability can be either low, medium or high. Fertility is of low heritability while growth traits are medium to high and carcass traits are of high heritability. Genetic correlation is when different traits are affected by the same genes. Weaning weight and yearling weight are genetically correlated. As well correlation can be positive or negative as in Multiple Trait Selection antagonistically correlated traits, such as birth weight and yearling weight. If traits are correlated, selection for one trait will also result in a change in the other trait. By rapidly turning over generations, such as always using yearling bulls and young cows, the frequency of desired traits can also be influenced thus speeding up genetic progress for specific traits. Single trait selection, or "tandem" is when only one trait is considered at a time. While rapid success can be achieved in that one category, other traits may suffer as a result therefore it can be counter productive. Selection for more than one trait at a time reduces the amount of progress achieved in a particular trait in each generation. The advantage of multiple trait selection is that consideration is given to several valuable traits and only those individuals that possess all are used in subsequent breeding. So if we go back to the question I started with, there is danger that by selecting for increased horn growth without giving consideration to other valuable traits at the same time, we can cause substantial damage to the breed we all love and want to enhance. I have witnessed this in other breeds in the past. In the 1980's the selection for increased frame size resulted in many cows that were too high maintenance for winter feeding, lacked enough milk to raise a healthy calf or did not rebreed every year. How do we apply what we have learned? We either identify through research, traits that are correlated to horn length and whether that correlation is positive or negative and avoid propagating individuals with these antagonistic traits. Or we can use multiple trait selection and mindful culling to maintain the attributes that have made Texas Longhorns what they are. Purebred breeders have significant influence on the quality of Texas Longhorns used by the industry. We also have a responsibility to ensure the cattle with which we are entrusted, remain functional and adaptable to the various environments in which they are raised. Farmer John once lived on a quiet rural highway but as time went by, the traffic slowly built up and eventually got so heavy and so fast that his free range chickens were being run over, at a rate of three to six a week. So Farmer John called the local police station to complain, "You've got to do something about all these people driving so fast and killing all my chickens," he said to the local police officer. "What do you want me to do?" asked the policeman. "I don't care, just do something about those crazy drivers! So the next day the policeman had the Council erect a sign that said: SCHOOL CROSSING Three days later Farmer John called the policeman and said, "You've still got to do something about these drivers. The school crossing' sign seems to make them go even faster!" So again, they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY. That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and said, "Your signs are no good. Can I put up my own sign?" In order to get Farmer John off his back said "Sure. Put up your own sign. The phone calls to the Police Station stopped, but curiosity got the better of the Officer, so he called Farmer John, How s the problem with the speeding drivers. did you put up your sign?" "Oh, I sure did and not one chicken has been killed. The policeman was really curious and thought he'd better go out and take a look at the sign. He also thought the sign might be something the Police could use elsewhere, to slow drivers down.. So he drove out to Farmer John's house. His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. 'NUDIST COLONY' 'Slow down and watch out for chicks!'
