5 WINTER FLY FISHING The Bighorn National Forest boasts an abundance of wildlife, both on land and in the water. Rainbow, brown, brook, and native cutthroat trout are a few of the finned creatures found in pristine mountain lakes and rivers. The verdant valleys around Sheridan and the forests of the Bighorns are home to trophy mule and whitetail deer, pronghorn, elk, moose, and wild turkey. Sightings of black bear, mountain lion, bobcats and coyote are rare but possible. FISHING, HUNTING, & ATV RIDING Throughout the Bighorn National Forest, more than 1,000 miles of two-track roads remain open and managed for ATV adventures. Used in conjunction with camping and hiking trips, ATVs can be an exciting way to access the outdoors. Trail maps are available from the visitor s center and the Forest Service. 11 The Historic Sheridan Inn was once the stomping grounds of William F. Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West Show. Black Mountain Fire Lookout, constructed in the 1930s, is one of two fire lookouts remaining in the Bighorns. The lookout is no longer in use, but at 9,500 feet, the tower remains a popular hiking destination with an unrivaled view over the timberline. The Bighorns have played host to polo since the 1890s, when a pair of Scottish brothers introduced the game to their cowhands. After a rush of friends visiting from the East, they realized folks can stay as long as they like. Thus, the family dude ranch business was born.
